Archived edition: our verdict as at 24 Oct 2026. Kept unchanged as the record of what we said then. Read the current edition: The Best AI Tools in Australia 2026: Every Category's Top Pick, Scored for Australians ยท Why we keep every edition
This page names the best AI tool in each of the 30 categories we review, for an Australian buyer, as at 24 October 2026. Each pick tops its category out of 25 and scores at least 4 of 5 for Australian Fit (AUD billing, GST, data residency, local support). Twenty-five categories have a winner; five have none, because nothing in them serves Australians well enough, and we show the gap rather than fill it.
Prices below are the ones recorded in our directory on the date above. Where a vendor bills Australians in Australian dollars, that is the vendor's figure. Where it bills in US dollars or euros, we say so. Each tool links to its full review, which carries the date that price was last verified, and each category links to the roundup that ranks every tool we have reviewed in it.
Quick picks: the top tool in every category
Sorted by category. Score is out of 25. Australian Fit (AU Fit) is out of 5, and a tool needs 4 or more to be named a winner. "No winner" means the category's top scorer failed that bar.

Two things to notice in that table. The highest score on the site, Hnry at 24/25, belongs to an Australian tax tool, not to a chatbot. And the five empty rows are not obscure corners. Presentations, voice, writing, marketing and coding are the categories most Australians search for first, and they are also the ones where every strong tool keeps your data offshore or will not say where it keeps it.
The five categories with no winner
A category winner must score at least 4 out of 5 for Australian Fit. That rule is the Australian Fit gate, and these five categories show it doing its job.
- AI Presentation & Slide Tools. Gamma leads on raw score at 20/25, but its Australian Fit is 3/5 and so is every other tool's. Not one slide generator we have reviewed bills in AUD or offers an Australian region. Roundup.
- Audio, Voice & Podcasting. ElevenLabs leads at 19/25 with Australian Fit 2/5. The best Australian Fit in the whole category is 3/5. Voice AI is a US-dollar, US-infrastructure business, and the reviews say so one after another. Roundup.
- Writing & Content AI. DeepL leads at 18/25 with Australian Fit 2/5. The tools most Australians have heard of in this category score 2/5 for local fit. Roundup.
- Marketing & SEO. This one is different. Two tools reach 20/25 at Australian Fit 4/5. One is a marketing-video tool in a category scoped to SEO and content work, and the other, HubSpot AI Search Grader, is a single free diagnostic rather than a platform anyone runs a marketing function on. The category roundup names a best available pick and declines to crown a Top Pick, and the directory matches it. Roundup.
- Coding & Development (from 24 October 2026). Claude Code held this badge at 20/25 until we re-checked where it keeps your code. Anthropic stores it in the United States on every plan, so under our residency standard Claude Code is now 19/25 at Australian Fit 3/5, level with GitHub Copilot and the rest of the leaders. The only coding tools at 4/5 are self-hosted niche tools scoring 15/25 or less, which the roundup does not cover, so the category has no winner. Roundup.
If you work in one of these five, the honest advice is short. Pick on capability and price, and go in knowing you are buying a US product with a US-dollar invoice and offshore data. The roundups still name the best option for a given job. They just will not pretend it is a good Australian fit.
If you run a small business
Start where the money leaks: tax, sales admin and customer enquiries. All three picks here bill in Australian dollars and clear the Australian Fit gate at 5/5.
- Hnry, 24/25. The highest score on the site. It takes tax, GST and lodgments off a sole trader's plate for 1% of income, capped at A$1,500 a year plus GST. If you are a sole trader, start here.
- Xero, 21/25. From A$37 a month, GST included, billed in AUD. The accounting platform most Australian small businesses already trust, and the one your bookkeeper already knows.
- Zoho CRM with Zia AI, 21/25. A$22 per user a month on annual billing, GST included. Zoho runs data centres in Sydney and Melbourne, and an Australian account is hosted in the local region.
For enquiries that have outgrown the inbox, Zoho Desk Zia AI (20/25) starts at A$10.86 per agent a month on annual billing. For the accounting decision most owners eventually face, read Xero vs MYOB.
If you are a professional in law, health or property
Price is rarely your constraint. The questions are whether the tool understands Australian law, Australian regulators and Australian clients or patients, and whether it survives a question about where the data sits. All three picks here are Australian-built.
- Smokeball, 22/25. Practice management for law firms at A$59 per user a month plus GST, billed in AUD. The Legal, Compliance & HR winner. If your business has no lawyer and needs documents rather than a practice system, Lawpath (21/25, Australian Fit 5/5) is the pick for you.
- Heidi Health, 22/25. A Melbourne-built medical scribe at A$85 a month for the Clinician plan on annual billing, ex-GST, with a free tier. It is the Healthcare & Medical AI winner. If your requirement is that processing itself happens onshore, read Heidi vs Lyrebird before you choose.
- Archistar, 22/25. Sydney-built. It pulls more than 200 planning datasets per site and generates compliant 3D designs in minutes, from A$95 a month, GST included, billed in AUD. The Real Estate & Property AI winner.
Treat these reviews as a shortlist, not as advice. No AI tool replaces qualified legal, medical or financial advice, and every review in those categories says so.
If you are a founder or building something
You are choosing tooling, not software. What matters is cost at scale, whether you can self-host, and whether the billing currency is one your accountant recognises.
- Claude Code, 19/25. Anthropic bills Australians in AUD with GST included, at A$28 a month, and stores your code in the United States. Still the most capable coding agent we have reviewed, but no coding tool clears the gate, so the category has no winner.
- n8n, 21/25. The self-hosted Community Edition is free, which means you can run it in an Australian cloud region and keep every workflow onshore. n8n Cloud starts at EUR 20 a month billed annually, in euros. The AI Automation & Integration winner.
- Relevance AI, 20/25. A Sydney-founded agent builder at A$27 a month ex-GST, billed in USD. The AI Agent Builders winner.
The build-versus-buy automation decision is priced out in n8n vs Make.
If you are just getting started
You do not need a stack. You need one assistant that works, costs little, and never asks you to think about exchange rates. Start on a free tier and pay only once something annoys you enough to fix.
- Google Gemini, 20/25. Free tier, then A$7.99 a month for AI Plus, billed in AUD. The cheapest way in, though Google does not say where the consumer app keeps your data. If your business runs on Microsoft 365, Microsoft Copilot (20/25) is the AI Assistants & Chatbots winner: Microsoft publishes that an Australian tenant's Copilot data is stored in Australia.
- Gemini Notebook, formerly NotebookLM, 22/25. Free. It answers only from documents you give it, which makes it the right first tool for anyone who distrusts chatbots. The Productivity & Workflow winner.
- Frollo, 22/25. Free, Australian-built, and it stores your data primarily in Australia. The Personal Finance & Budgeting winner, if the first thing you want help with is your own money.
If you are weighing the two assistants everyone talks about, read ChatGPT vs Claude for Australian business. Neither wins its category here, and the FAQ below says why.
Editor's Choice: the 25 tools that clear the gate
As at 24 October 2026, 25 tools hold Editor's Choice. Each is the top scorer in its category and scores at least 4 out of 5 for Australian Fit. Sorted by score, highest first, then alphabetically. The full page, with the history of every badge change, is at Editor's Choice.

Score order makes the gate visible. Several 19s and 20s sit in this list because a higher-scoring rival failed on Australian Fit. Three categories are ties on points. In Business, CRM & Sales AI, Pipedrive matches Zoho CRM at 21/25 and clears the gate too; the badge sits with Zoho because the category roundup names it as Top Pick, and we do not let a mechanical tiebreak overrule a written judgement. In AI Agent Builders, Microsoft Copilot Studio matches Relevance AI at 20/25; the roundup's winner is Relevance AI. In AI Automation & Integration, the roundup names n8n and Microsoft Power Automate as co-picks at 21/25; the badge sits with n8n, the one you can keep entirely onshore. The runners-up are named, with reasons, in each roundup.
How we score
Every review scores five criteria out of five, for 25 in total: Value for Money, Ease of Use, Feature Depth, Australian Fit, and Reliability & Support. Australian Fit is scored on its own and it decides two things the maths alone cannot. Five stars require at least 4 out of 5 there, and so does a category Top Pick. The framework, the star bands and the gate are set out in full on our Methodology page. Every reviewed tool's Australian Fit score, billing currency and data location sit in one sortable table on the Australian Fit Index, and the tools that state an Australian region or keep data on your own hardware are listed, with the caveats, on our data residency page.
Most of our reviews are desk-researched from the vendor's own pricing pages, documentation and release notes. Some are hands-on. Each review says which. No vendor has paid to be reviewed or to influence a score, and we hold no active affiliate relationships; see the Affiliate Disclosure.
Frequently asked questions
Which AI tools store data in Australia?
As at 20 September 2026, 29 of the tools we have reviewed state an Australian storage region or keep processing on hardware you control. Seven run on your own machine or infrastructure, including LM Studio and Ollama, so nothing leaves the country. The other 22 are cloud products whose vendors publish an Australian region, among them Microsoft Copilot, Zoho CRM, Culture Amp, Heidi Health, Frollo and Lawpath. Almost all of that second group means storage, not processing. Among the cloud tools we have checked, only Lyrebird Health states that the AI processing itself runs in Australia. Google Gemini was on this list until 24 October 2026, when we found no Google page to support it. The full list, with each vendor's exact wording, is on our data residency page.
Do AI tool prices include GST?
It depends on who is billing you, and we print the price the way the vendor states it. Where a vendor bills Australians in Australian dollars, we publish its figure, including its own "inc. GST" or "+GST" wording. Where a vendor bills only in US dollars or euros, we convert at the exchange rate on the day of the review and show the result ex-GST, because a GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service. If you are not registered for GST, allow roughly 10% on top of any converted figure. The rule, and the rate we used, are on every review and on the Methodology page.
What is the best free AI tool for a small business?
Google Gemini, if price is the test. Its free tier is genuinely useful, and AI Plus is A$7.99 a month, billed in AUD. It scores 20/25 with Australian Fit 3/5, because Google does not say where the consumer app keeps your data. Two free tools clear the gate at 21/25 or better: Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) for working from your own documents, and Looker Studio, whose free tier reports on your business data at A$0. For your own money rather than the business's, Frollo (22/25) is free and Australian-built.
Is ChatGPT the best AI assistant for Australians?
Not by our scoring. ChatGPT scores 21/25, level with Perplexity for the highest total in the category, but its Australian Fit is 3/5, which rules it out as a category winner under the gate. It bills in AUD at A$13 a month, GST included, but consumer-plan data is stored in the US. The category winner is Microsoft Copilot at 20/25 with Australian Fit 4/5 (AU$26.91 per user a month on the promo, ex-GST), the one assistant whose vendor publishes that an Australian tenant's data is stored in Australia. Google Gemini (the value pick at A$7.99 a month) and Claude both score 20/25 at Australian Fit 3/5. The full ranking is in our AI assistants roundup.
Why do some categories have no winner?
Because a category winner must score at least 4 out of 5 for Australian Fit, and in five categories nothing does, or the roundup declines to crown the tool that does. Presentations, voice, and writing are led by US products with US-dollar billing and no Australian region. Coding is led by tools that store your code offshore; the only ones at the bar are niche self-hosted tools well down the scores. Marketing & SEO has two tools at the bar, but one is a video tool in the wrong category and the other is a free diagnostic, so the roundup names a best available pick instead. A badge that everything wins is decoration. The empty categories are the clearest evidence we can offer that Australian Fit is doing real work.
