Verdict (TL;DR): If you already run a Shopify store, Shopify Magic is the AI you should reach for first — it's free, built in, and your store already speaks AUD. It won't replace a dedicated email or personalisation platform, but for product copy, store setup and customer replies it's the best-value AI in Australian e-commerce.

What Shopify Magic is

Shopify Magic is the set of AI features built directly into Shopify, the Canadian-headquartered commerce platform that powers a large share of Australian online stores. It isn't a separate product you buy — it's woven through the admin you already use. "Magic" covers the generative bits (product descriptions, email subject lines, blog drafts, image editing), while Sidekick is the conversational assistant that can answer questions about your store and take actions inside the admin.

Shopify has leaned hard into this. Its Winter 2026 Edition ("Renaissance") shipped more than 150 product updates, a large share of them AI-related, with Sidekick now able to generate theme edits, images, content and workflow automations from a single admin prompt.

For an Australian retailer, the important context is simpler than the feature list: this AI lives inside a platform that already bills you in Australian dollars, charges GST, and is used by enough local stores that every Shopify agency and freelancer in the country knows it. That changes the value equation completely.

What it costs in Australia

Shopify Magic is included free with every Shopify subscription — there is no separate "AI plan" and no per-message AI fee for the core generative features. You pay for Shopify; Magic comes with it.

Plan Monthly (AUD) What you get
Basic $56/mo (or $42/mo paid yearly) Core store + Shopify Magic + Sidekick
Grow $149/mo (or $114/mo paid yearly) Lower card rates, more staff
Advanced $575/mo (or $431/mo paid yearly) Advanced reporting, lowest rates
Plus from $3,700/mo Enterprise checkout, unlimited staff, B2B catalogues
Agentic $0/mo Catalogue listing in AI shopping channels; you pay only on a sale, card rates from 1.7% + 30c AUD online

Shopify publishes pricing in AUD on its Australian site. (Note: the mid-tier plan, previously "Shopify," is now branded "Grow.") The Agentic plan is the newest rung and the odd one out: there is no subscription at all, only transaction fees, and it buys your products a place in AI shopping channels rather than a storefront. If all you want is for an AI assistant to be able to find and sell your catalogue, that is now a zero-subscription proposition in Australian dollars. If you want a shop, you still start at Basic. The pricing page lists these figures exclusive of any tax line; GST treatment appears on your tax invoice, so check the invoice rather than the marketing page. The exact plan dollar figures change with promotions, so confirm them on the live AU pricing page before quoting a client. The point that matters: the AI carries no incremental cost on top of the plan you'd be paying for anyway.

How it works in practice

The most useful day-to-day feature is product description generation. Add a product, type a few keywords ("merino throw, charcoal, made in Tasmania"), and Magic drafts a description in a few seconds. The output still needs editing — treat it as a fast first draft, not finished copy.

Sidekick is the more interesting bet. You can ask it things like "show me my best-selling products in May" or "set up a 10% discount for new customers," and it answers or performs the action inside the admin. It's genuinely useful for the admin tasks people avoid because they can't remember where the setting lives.

Email subject lines, blog post drafts and the AI image editor (removing or replacing backgrounds on product shots) round it out. None of these is best-in-class on its own. Together, inside one platform, they remove a lot of small friction.

What it does well

  • Zero added cost. Every feature is included in your existing plan — unbeatable on value for a store already on Shopify.
  • AUD-native billing. No currency conversion and no foreign-transaction surprises; tax appears on your invoice.
  • Sidekick does, not just suggests. It can execute admin actions, not only generate text.
  • No integration work. It's already there. Nothing to install, connect or maintain.

What it doesn't do well

  • It's a generalist. For email and SMS automation, Klaviyo is deeper. For on-site personalisation, Nosto and Rebuy do more. Magic is broad, not deep.
  • Locked to Shopify. If you're on WooCommerce, BigCommerce or a custom stack, none of this is available to you.
  • Copy still needs editing. "Made in Tasmania" claims and specific product facts must be checked — it will write confidently around gaps.
  • Data isn't stored in Australia. Shopify runs on global cloud infrastructure; there's no Australian data-residency guarantee. For most retail use this is low-risk, but worth knowing.
  • Feature sprawl. With 150+ product updates in one edition, knowing what exists is itself a task.

Australian fit

This is where Shopify Magic pulls ahead of every standalone AI tool in the category. Pricing is shown and charged in AUD on the Australian site, so there's no conversion guesswork, and GST appears on your tax invoice. Support is available in Australian-friendly channels, and the local partner ecosystem — agencies, freelancers, Shopify Meetups — means help is easy to find.

The one caveat is data residency: store and customer data sits on Shopify's global infrastructure, not in Australia. Shopify is a Canadian company that processes data across borders, including the United States; its privacy policy routes Asia/Australia/New Zealand data through its Singapore entity, with no Australian data-residency commitment. Under the Privacy Act this is generally acceptable for retail data, but if you handle unusually sensitive customer information, factor it in. For the overwhelming majority of Australian online stores, the AUD billing and local ecosystem make this the path of least resistance.

Alternatives

  • Klaviyo — consider this if email and SMS marketing is your priority and you want deeper automation than Magic offers.
  • Rebuy — consider this if you want AI-driven upsells and cart personalisation specifically on Shopify.
  • Nosto — consider this if you're a larger store with the budget for enterprise on-site personalisation.

Bottom line

If you run a Shopify store in Australia, the question isn't whether to use Shopify Magic — it's already paid for — but whether you also need a specialist tool on top. For most small and mid-sized stores, Magic plus disciplined editing covers product copy, store admin and basic customer comms without spending another cent.

Bigger stores chasing every conversion point will still want Klaviyo for lifecycle marketing or Rebuy for upsells. But as the default, free, AUD-native AI layer for Australian e-commerce, nothing else comes close on value. It earns its Top Pick spot in this category not by being the deepest tool, but by being the one almost every local store already has.

  • 21 Sep 2026 🇦🇺 Currency verified by browser — native AUD, confirmed. shopify.com/au/pricing labels every figure AUD: Basic $42 AUD/mo yearly / $56 monthly, Grow $114 / $149, Advanced $431 / $575, Plus from $3,700 AUD/mo, Agentic $0, card rates "1.7% + 30¢ AUD". Every figure here matches. Note for future checks: the page does carry one bare-USD item beside all the AUD — "1% up to $99 USD/mo" — so never infer one currency for the whole page. aud_native: true set explicitly. Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify Magic available in Australia?

Yes. It's built into every Shopify subscription, and Shopify operates fully in Australia with an AU pricing site. If you're on Shopify here, you already have it.

Does Shopify Magic cost extra, and is it billed in AUD?

No extra cost — Magic is included free with every Shopify plan. Shopify publishes and charges AU pricing in AUD (Basic from $56/mo, Grow $149, Advanced $575), with GST shown on your tax invoice.

Is there a free version or trial?

There's no separate AI plan or AI trial — Magic comes free with whatever Shopify plan you pay for. You don't pay anything extra for the AI features themselves. Shopify also now sells an Agentic plan at $0 a month, but that lists your catalogue in AI shopping channels and charges on each sale; it is not a free Shopify store.

Is my store data stored in Australia?

No. Shopify runs on global cloud infrastructure with no Australian data-residency guarantee; AU/NZ data routes through its Singapore entity. Low-risk for most retail, but worth knowing if you handle sensitive customer data.

Is Shopify Magic the best AI for Australian e-commerce?

For stores already on Shopify, yes — it's our category Top Pick on value. It's a generalist, though: Klaviyo goes deeper on email/SMS and Rebuy on Shopify upsells.
