The gate: Australian Fit 5/5 clears it, so five stars are permitted.
Skip to the verdictUPDATED — 15 May 2026. Our 9 May 2026 review missed three material facts: (1) Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat is free for eligible M365 customers — the review implied no free tier; (2) Microsoft's Australian regions are IRAP certified at PROTECTED level, the highest classification for AU public-cloud workloads — the review understated this as "Australian data centre option"; (3) Following the 9 March 2026 Wave 3 announcement, Copilot now offers Claude as a model choice alongside OpenAI's. AU Fit lifts from 4/5 to 5/5, Value for Money from 3/5 to 4/5, and overall score from 19/25 to 21/25. Original review preserved in archive.
Microsoft Copilot is AI built directly into Microsoft 365 — Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. It's not a standalone chatbot you switch to; it's an assistant that works inside the tools Australian businesses already use every day. Summarise a long email thread in Outlook, generate a first draft in Word, analyse a spreadsheet in Excel, or recap a Teams meeting you missed — Copilot handles all of it without leaving your existing workflow. Eligible M365 customers also get Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat free, which is the part most reviews miss. The paid product on top — Microsoft 365 Copilot — is what brings the AI inside the apps themselves.
What it does well
Best-in-class M365 integration. If your business runs on Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams, Copilot is the most natural AI fit available — it works where you already work, not in a separate tab.
Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat is free for eligible M365 customers. This is the part most coverage misses. If you're on a qualifying M365 plan, you already have Copilot Chat available at no additional cost. The paid Copilot subscription is what unlocks the assistant inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams — but the chat-based assistant is on the free side of the line.
IRAP PROTECTED data residency. Microsoft's Australian regions are IRAP certified at PROTECTED level, the highest classification for Australian public-cloud workloads. No other AI assistant in this category clears that bar. For regulated industries, government work, or any business with serious data-sovereignty requirements, Copilot is currently the only practical option.
Choice of underlying model. After Microsoft's 9 March 2026 Wave 3 announcement, Copilot lets users pick Claude as a model option in addition to OpenAI's models. Useful for the way Claude handles long documents and nuanced writing — and rare among the major AI suites.
Meeting intelligence in Teams is excellent. Copilot in Teams can recap missed meetings, summarise discussions, identify action items, and answer questions about what was said. Genuinely time-saving for Australian teams managing busy calendars.
Excel Copilot removes a real barrier. Generating formulas, analysing data, and creating charts via plain English instructions makes Excel far more accessible for non-technical users — high practical value for SMEs.
Australian pricing in AUD. Microsoft prices M365 Copilot in AUD for Australian customers, currently AU$26.91/user/month (promotional rate; discount window runs to 31 December 2026).
Watch out for
The paid product requires an underlying M365 subscription. Microsoft 365 Copilot (the in-app assistant) is an add-on to M365 Business or Enterprise. Free Copilot Chat doesn't have this constraint for eligible customers, but the in-app experience does.
Per-user pricing adds up fast. At AU$26.91/user/month on top of existing M365 costs, Copilot is significantly more expensive than any standalone AI assistant. For a 10-person team that's AU$269+/month for Copilot alone, before base M365 licences.
⚠️ Promo pricing is a discount window, not the sticker price. The AU$26.91 rate was originally due to end 30 June 2026; Microsoft instead re-ran the discount for 1 July–31 December 2026. When it lapses, annual billing reverts to AU$31.40/user/month (or AU$37.68/user/month billed monthly) — budget on the standard rate. Source
Slower to evolve than specialist AI tools. Microsoft moves at enterprise pace. ChatGPT and Claude ship new capabilities considerably faster.
Output quality varies by application. Copilot in Teams and Outlook is strong. Copilot in Word and PowerPoint can produce generic first drafts that need significant editing.

Value verdict: For eligible M365 customers, free Copilot Chat is genuine value before you even consider the paid Copilot. The paid tier is expensive on a per-user basis, but the value calculation is different from standalone AI tools. For mid-market businesses on M365 where integrations genuinely save an hour per person per week, the ROI is real. If you're considering it, move before the promotional pricing expires on 30 June 2026.
Australian notes
- Available in Australia: Yes — full availability with AU-specific pricing and support
- Pricing in AUD: Yes — Microsoft prices in AUD for Australian customers, GST included
- GST: Included in all AUD pricing shown
- Data residency: Microsoft has Australian data centres in Sydney and Melbourne. M365 Copilot data can be configured to reside in Australia. IRAP certified at PROTECTED level — the highest classification for AU public-cloud workloads. No other AI assistant in this category clears that bar
- Local support: Yes — Microsoft has dedicated Australian enterprise support, local partners, and a large domestic reseller network
- Local relevance: Strong. Deep presence in Australian enterprise; M365 licensing aligns with Australian market conventions
- Fair Work matters: From 20 October 2026, if you use Microsoft Copilot to prepare an application, submission or witness statement for a Fair Work Commission case, you must disclose that use, verify every fact and authority yourself, and say in the document that you did (fwc.gov.au/genai). The Commission names Microsoft Copilot as an example of GenAI and says it is not a substitute for legal advice — see our explainer.
- Fair Work matters — update 20 September 2026: We have now read the Guidance Note itself. Paid plans are covered. The Commission's definition of "public GenAI" includes "both free and paid or subscription versions of ChatGPT, Claude, CoPilot and Gemini". A person must do the checking (para 31). You cannot ask Copilot, or any other AI tool, to verify what Copilot drafted. Using it only to check spelling or grammar, or to format a document, is out of scope (para 7). Guidance Note PDF
Best for
- Businesses already running on Microsoft 365 — Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams users get the most value
- Mid-market teams where meeting summarisation, email management, and document creation at scale justify the per-user cost
- Organisations with data governance requirements — IRAP PROTECTED is a genuine differentiator
- Any M365 customer who hasn't yet tried free Copilot Chat — it's already in your subscription
Not great for
- Sole traders and small teams where per-user cost is hard to absorb on top of existing M365 subscriptions (try free Copilot Chat instead)
- Businesses not on M365 — the platform prerequisite is a real barrier for the in-app product
- Creative or content-heavy work — Copilot's standalone writing outputs are functional but generic
Alternatives worth considering
| App | Why you might prefer it |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Much cheaper, broader features, no platform dependency — better for most individuals |
| Claude | Stronger standalone writing and document analysis; Anthropic now has a Sydney office |
| Google Gemini | Better option for Google Workspace users at a lower per-user cost — A$7.99/month inc GST entry |
Our verdict
Microsoft Copilot is the most serious AI proposition for Australian businesses with data-sovereignty requirements or material investment in M365 — and it's the only assistant on this list with IRAP PROTECTED data residency. The free Copilot Chat tier for eligible M365 customers is the under-discussed entry point: if your business is already on M365, you already have Copilot Chat. For the in-app experience, the paid tier is expensive per seat but pays off for mid-market teams that genuinely use Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams every day. If you're considering it, move before the promotional AU$26.91/user pricing expires on 30 June 2026.

- 20 Sep 2026 🇦🇺 — Australia's app-store age checks became enforceable on 9 September 2026 and do not reach Copilot. The store gate covers only apps rated R18+. Worth knowing as a parent: nothing at the App Store or Google Play will stop a minor installing this one. The companion-chatbot half of eSafety's Age-Restricted Material Codes does not apply either. - 1 Sep 2026 🇦🇺 — Re-verified against the AU pricing page: the scheduled 30 June promo end did not eventuate — Microsoft re-ran the discount. AU$26.91/user/month (annual) stands under a new 1 July–31 December 2026 window; standard rate AU$31.40 (AU$37.68 monthly). The page states prices exclude GST, so we also corrected this review's earlier "GST included" line. Source
