LM Studio Review Australia 2026: Run AI Privately on Your PC
- From
- Free · desktop app and local models free forever · optional cloud tiers US$20 (Bionic+) / US$100 (Pro) per month, billed in USD
The gate: Australian Fit 5/5 clears it, so five stars are permitted.
Skip to the verdictVerdict (TL;DR): LM Studio is the easiest way to run AI models entirely on your own computer — in its local mode there's no cloud, no subscription, and no data leaving the building (the optional cloud credits added mid-2026 are exactly that: optional, and off by default). For Australian businesses with privacy or data-sovereignty concerns, that's the whole point. It's free, has a proper interface, and is our Top Pick for local AI. The trade-offs: you need a capable PC, and local models trail the frontier cloud ones.

What LM Studio is
LM Studio is a desktop application that lets you download and run open large language models — Llama, Mistral, Qwen and many others — directly on your own Windows, Mac or Linux machine. When you run models locally, nothing goes to the cloud: the model runs on your hardware, your prompts stay on your device, and you can use it with no internet connection at all. Since mid-2026 the app also offers optional cloud services — a hosted agent called Bionic that can call larger frontier open models on LM Studio's US-based servers — but those are opt-in and pay-as-you-go; the local path this review recommends never touches them.
What sets LM Studio apart from the more technical tools in this category is the interface. It has a built-in model browser that shows you, before you download anything, whether a given model will fit in your computer's memory — which removes the main source of frustration for newcomers. It also exposes a one-click local server, so developers can point other applications at the model running on their own machine.
For an Australian business, the appeal is simple and serious: AI capability where the data never leaves your control.
What it costs in Australia
The desktop app is free, and everything local — running models on your own machine — stays free with no subscription and no per-use charge. LM Studio now also sells two optional cloud subscriptions, which you can ignore entirely.
| Plan | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| LM Studio (Free) | Free | Local models and offline voice transcription on your own machine; licensed for personal and internal business use (per lmstudio.ai/terms, updated 23 Aug 2026) |
| Bionic+ | US$20/month (≈A$28 ex-GST) | Optional US-hosted open models — Kimi K3, GLM 5.3, DeepSeek V4 Flash and more — plus discounted bulk tokens, web search and page extraction; billed in USD |
| Pro | US$100/month (≈A$140 ex-GST) | Everything in Bionic+ with 5× usage limits and early access to new features |
| Cloud credits | No published rate | The page states only that credits cover usage beyond your plan's allowance; the ~US$0.13 per million input tokens we recorded in September is no longer shown |
| Teams | Centralised billing | The pricing page points teams to "create an organization" for shared inference billing and says team subscription plans are coming soon |
For the local use case this review is about, the only "cost" is hardware: running capable models needs a reasonably modern computer, ideally with plenty of RAM and a decent GPU. There's no currency or GST question unless you opt into cloud credits, which are billed in USD (GST treatment not stated — check your invoice). If you buy a more powerful machine to run larger models, that's a capital cost worth factoring in. The current terms licence the software for personal and internal business use, so it can still be deployed across a business at no licence cost — the one carve-out is that you can't resell it as a hosted service (no service-bureau or SaaS use).
How it works in practice
You install LM Studio, open the model browser, pick a model sized to your hardware (it tells you what will fit), download it, and start chatting — much like using ChatGPT, except entirely offline. The interface is familiar enough that a non-technical user can be productive in minutes, which is rare in this category.
The local-server feature is where it earns its keep for businesses with developers: flip it on and LM Studio behaves like a private, in-house version of a cloud AI API, so internal tools can use AI without sending a single byte to an external provider. For a firm handling sensitive client data — legal, accounting, health — that architecture is the difference between "we can't use AI for this" and "we can."
The honest limitation: an open model running on a laptop won't match the latest frontier cloud model on the hardest reasoning or coding tasks. For drafting, summarising, classifying and Q&A over your own documents, it's more than capable; for the bleeding edge, the cloud still wins.
What it does well
- Genuinely easy. The best interface and onboarding in local AI; the model browser prevents the classic "won't fit" frustration.
- Completely private (in local mode). Run local models and data never leaves your device — the core value for sovereignty-conscious Australians. Cloud features exist but are strictly opt-in.
- Free, including commercial use. LM Studio's terms licence the app for personal and internal business use at no charge.
- Local server. Run a private AI API in-house for internal tools.
- Offline. Works with no internet at all.
What it doesn't do well
- Needs capable hardware. Larger models demand RAM and a GPU; underpowered PCs struggle.
- Closed source. Unlike Jan, Ollama or GPT4All, LM Studio is not open source, so the code can't be independently audited — a consideration for the most privacy-driven buyers, even though the app itself ships with no telemetry.
- Trails frontier cloud models. Local open models aren't as capable as the latest cloud AI on the hardest tasks.
- No vendor support SLA. Community-supported; no paid help line.
Australian fit
This is where local AI inverts the usual Australian-fit problem. Most AI tools in this directory lose points because they store data offshore. Used the way this review recommends — local models on your own hardware — LM Studio stores nothing offshore; it stores nothing anywhere but your own computer. For an Australian business worried about the Privacy Act, APP 8 (cross-border disclosure), or simply keeping client data in the building, that's as strong as Australian fit gets.
One new caveat since mid-2026: the optional Bionic cloud services run on US-based servers. LM Studio advertises a Zero Data Retention policy for them, but if you opt in, your prompts do leave the country — so an APP 8-sensitive business should keep those features switched off and stay on local models. The default local mode is unaffected. That caveat now has a price on it: the paid Bionic+ and Pro tiers are the off-device path, and buying one is the moment an Australian buyer should re-read their cross-border disclosure obligations.
The one nuance is that LM Studio is closed source: its own privacy policy states the app ships with no telemetry or user tracking, but unlike Jan, Ollama or GPT4All you can't independently audit the code to verify that. Privacy purists who want a provable, open-source guarantee may prefer Jan for that reason. There's no AUD pricing question because it's free, and no data-residency question because the data simply doesn't travel. For sensitive Australian use cases, that architecture is the selling point.
Alternatives
- Ollama — consider this if you're a developer who prefers a command-line tool and wants the fastest, leanest backend.
- Jan — consider this if you want fully open-source (Apache 2.0) with analytics off by default and auditable code.
- AnythingLLM — consider this if your main goal is private Q&A over your own documents (it can run on top of LM Studio).
Bottom line
For an Australian business that wants AI but can't or won't send data to the cloud, LM Studio is the place to start. It's free, it's the easiest tool in the category by a clear margin, and its entire architecture keeps your data on your own hardware — which is exactly what privacy-sensitive sectors need. The Top Pick is earned on the combination of approachability and zero data exposure.
Be realistic about two things: you need a decent computer, and the models won't match the latest cloud AI on the hardest problems. For everyday drafting, summarising and private document work, neither is a dealbreaker. If you're a developer wanting something leaner, look at Ollama; if you want fully open-source with no telemetry, look at Jan. But as the default on-ramp to private, on-device AI in Australia, LM Studio is the one to install first.

Frequently asked questions
Is LM Studio available in Australia?
Yes. It's a desktop app for Windows, Mac or Linux with no geographic restriction — you download it and run models on your own machine, anywhere.
Does LM Studio charge in AUD?
The desktop app and local models are free, so for local use there's no currency or GST question — the only cost is capable hardware. The optional cloud tiers are billed in USD — Bionic+ at US$20/month and Pro at US$100/month, roughly A$28 and A$140 ex-GST at 1.4045 (18 September 2026) — and GST treatment isn't stated.
Is LM Studio really free for business use?
Yes. LM Studio's terms (updated August 2026) licence the app for personal and internal business use at no charge, so you can deploy it across a business at no licence cost. The one restriction: you can't resell it as a hosted service.
Does LM Studio keep my data in Australia?
In its default local mode, it keeps your data on your own device — nothing goes offshore or to the cloud at all. For Privacy Act and APP 8 cross-border concerns, that's as strong as Australian fit gets. The optional Bionic cloud features run on US-based servers with a Zero Data Retention policy — leave them switched off if data must stay onshore.
LM Studio or Ollama?
Choose LM Studio for the easiest interface and best onboarding in local AI. Pick Ollama if you're a developer who prefers a leaner command-line backend, or Jan if you want fully open-source code.
