ChatGPT vs Claude for Australian professionals — which one wins in 2026
Our pick: Claude AI. The verdict below says who should buy the other.
Pricing figures updated 20 September 2026. Both vendors now quote Australians in Australian dollars, so nothing below is a conversion. They differ on GST: Anthropic’s pricing page states "Prices include 10% GST", while OpenAI does not say either way on its pricing page and its Business FAQ says GST is added at checkout for Australian accounts. Every like-for-like comparison below adds GST to the ChatGPT figure before setting it beside Claude’s (Methodology).
Short answer (prices checked 20 September 2026): ChatGPT's cheapest paid plan is Go at A$13 a month, but it shows ads in Australia. For serious work the choice is between two plans. For document work, professional writing and analysis, pick Claude Pro at A$28 a month on annual billing, GST included. For images, voice and breadth, pick ChatGPT Plus at A$30 a month. OpenAI adds GST at checkout, which makes it about A$33. Both score 21/25 on our five-criteria method. Claude gets five stars because it scores 4/5 on Australian Fit. ChatGPT scores 3/5, so it is capped at four.
Editor's note (20 September 2026): Every pricing and feature claim below is anchored to each vendor's own pricing page, help centre and news hub, re-read this month. Both vendors now publish Australian dollar prices, so no exchange rate is used anywhere on this page.
Australians researching AI assistants this year reach the same fork in the road. ChatGPT, because everyone knows it. Claude, because someone on LinkedIn said it writes better. The reviews don't help much — most are written by Americans, in USD, with no mention of GST, data residency, or whether either vendor takes the Australian market seriously.
We've done the work. Both tools are reviewed in full on this site at 21/25 on the same 5×5 method, with Australian Fit scored as its own criterion rather than folded into a general verdict, by a named editor — Adam — who takes no payment from either vendor. It is a tie on the maths, for completely different reasons. The question worth asking isn't "which is better?" It's "which is better for me?" For a Sydney lawyer reviewing 60-page contracts, the answer is obvious. For a Brisbane marketing consultant who needs to generate social images and write copy in the same hour, it's the other one. For most Australian professionals doing real work — analysing documents, drafting client communications, summarising research — there's a sharper answer than the reviews on the internet suggest.
Here's the honest head-to-head.
TL;DR
- For long documents, professional writing, and complex reasoning — Claude Pro wins. Better default output quality, longer working context, less editing.
- For breadth and visual work — ChatGPT Plus wins. Image generation, voice mode, Custom GPTs, video, and Codex under one subscription.
- For value in AUD — Claude Pro on annual billing is A$28/month with GST already included, which still undercuts ChatGPT Plus at A$30/month before OpenAI adds GST. It is the cheapest premium AI in the category right now.
- For Australian-vendor optics — Claude wins. Anthropic opened a Sydney office on 10 March 2026, signed an MOU with the Australian Government on AI safety, and named Canva, Commonwealth Bank, and Quantium as Australian customers. OpenAI has no equivalent local presence.
- For data residency — close to a draw on consumer plans (both US-default). ChatGPT Enterprise/Edu/API customers can select Australia as a residency region today. Claude is "exploring AU local capacity via third-party partners" — not the same thing.
For most Australian professionals: Claude Pro on annual billing for serious work; add ChatGPT Plus only if you also need images, voice, or video.

Same 21/25, different stars: Claude earns ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ and ChatGPT ⭐⭐⭐⭐ under our Australian Fit gate — five stars needs Australian Fit ≥4/5, and Claude (Sydney office, AU Government MOU) scores 4 where ChatGPT scores 3.
Pricing in AUD — the real numbers
Both vendors now publish Australian dollar prices, so the exchange-rate guesswork is gone. What is left is GST, and they handle it differently. Anthropic’s pricing page states "Prices include 10% GST". OpenAI’s pricing page says nothing either way, and its Business FAQ says GST is added at checkout for Australian accounts. So a ChatGPT sticker price is not yet the number on your card; a Claude one is.
| Plan | ChatGPT (AUD, GST added at checkout) | Claude (AUD, GST included) |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Yes — ad-supported in AU since 26 March 2026 | Yes |
| Entry paid | A$13/month (Go) | A$28/month (Pro, annual — A$340 up front) |
| Headline paid plan | A$30/month (Plus) | A$34/month (Pro, monthly) |

| Smallest team seat | A$28/seat/month (Business Standard) | A$34/seat/month (Team Standard, annual; A$43 monthly; min 5 seats) |
| Premium team seat | A$140/seat/month (Business Premium) | A$170/seat/month (Team Premium, annual; A$213 monthly) |
| Enterprise | Custom quote | US$20/seat/month billed annually, plus usage at API rates |
Sources: chatgpt.com/pricing · openai.com/business/pricing · claude.com/pricing. Every figure is the vendor’s own AUD price. ChatGPT Business seats are shown in AUD alongside OpenAI’s USD annual and monthly rates; Claude Enterprise is the one tier Anthropic still quotes in US dollars.
The pricing takeaway: put both on the same GST footing and the order changes. ChatGPT Plus at A$30 becomes about A$33 once GST is added; Claude Pro on annual billing is A$28 with GST already in it. Claude has the cheaper serious-use plan, by roughly A$5 a month, provided you commit annually — no ads, full feature set. Month to month, Claude Pro is A$34 against ChatGPT Plus at about A$33, so the annual commitment is doing the work. ChatGPT keeps the cheaper casual plan at A$13 for Go, about A$14.30 with GST — but Go carries ads in Australia and strips out advanced reasoning. For an Australian professional using this every workday, Claude Pro on annual billing is the value play in this category. On team seats the order flips: ChatGPT Business Standard is A$28 a seat, about A$30.80 with GST, against Claude Team Standard at A$34 a seat with GST included.
There's also one cost ChatGPT carries that Claude doesn't, and it's almost never mentioned in reviews: ads on the Free and Go tiers. OpenAI rolled "Sponsored Tips" out to Australia on 26 March 2026 (source: openai.com/index/our-approach-to-advertising-and-expanding-access). If you've been on free ChatGPT and seen the difference recently, that's why. Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise remain ad-free. Claude has no ads on any tier.
Feature differences — where each one is genuinely better
This is where the comparison stops being interchangeable. The two products have diverged sharply in 2026.
What ChatGPT does better:
- Image generation. Built in to every tier via gpt-image-2 (ChatGPT Images 2.0, launched 21 April 2026). Claude has none. If you need a logo, a hero image, or a social card, this is a one-tool decision.
- Voice mode. Both have it; ChatGPT's is the more mature product, and Advanced Voice is unlimited on the Pro $200 tier.
- Custom GPTs and the GPT Store. A meaningful library of pre-built workflows and tools. Claude has Skills, but the ecosystem is smaller.
- Sora (video) and Codex (coding terminal). Both bundled into Plus and above.
- Deep Research. Available on Plus and above for long-running research tasks.
What Claude does better:
- Long documents. Claude Opus 5, Sonnet 5 and Fable 5.1 all run a 1M-token context window as standard — no longer a beta — which is meaningfully more than ChatGPT's default working window. For a Sydney lawyer with a 200-page contract, that's the feature. (Anthropic model overview, checked 10 September 2026.)
- Writing quality on professional content. Less editing required out of the box. Less generic phrasing. More considered tone for proposals, board papers, and client communications.
- Calibration on uncertainty. Claude flags what it doesn't know rather than bluffing. For high-stakes professional work, that's worth more than it sounds.
- Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and agent teams. Claude's coding agent is in Pro and above (A$28/mo on annual billing). Anthropic is retiring the Cowork name — a banner on its pricing page reads "Claude Cowork is now just Claude". For a developer or technical operator, that's a real bundle. The current model — Claude Opus 5 — sits at or near the top of public coding benchmarks.
- Claude for Microsoft 365 + Outlook. Yes — Claude works inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. ChatGPT does not. (Source: claude.com/claude-for-microsoft-365).
- Adaptive thinking + effort controls. Claude Opus 5 and Sonnet 5 use adaptive thinking, steered by an effort setting — you choose how much "thinking" the model spends per response. Useful when a quick answer is cheaper than a careful one, and vice versa. (Anthropic model overview, checked 10 September 2026.)
The summary: ChatGPT is a wider tool. Claude is a deeper tool. If your work is mostly visual or you want one assistant for everything, the breadth matters. If your work is mostly documents, writing, and code, the depth matters more.
Australian fit — the part the international reviews miss
Both vendors treat Australia better in 2026 than they did 12 months ago, but they've gone about it differently.
ChatGPT's Australian story is operational. GST handled at checkout. No local support hours. No IRAP statement. The substantive 2026 development was OpenAI making Australia a data residency option for Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare and API customers — a real win for regulated industries on those plans. Consumer plans (Free, Go, Plus, Pro) still process and store data on US infrastructure. Ads landed on Free and Go in Australia on 26 March 2026.
Claude's Australian story is strategic. On 10 March 2026 Anthropic announced its fourth APAC office — in Sydney — appointed Theo Hourmouzis as General Manager for Australia and New Zealand (ex-Snowflake SVP ANZ/ASEAN), and signed an MOU with the Australian Government on AI safety. The same announcement named Canva, Quantium, and Commonwealth Bank as Australian customers, alongside research partnerships with ANU, Murdoch Children's Research Institute, the Garvan Institute, and Curtin University. Anthropic's own data puts Australia at fourth globally on Claude.ai usage per capita. Data residency in Australia is "being explored via third-party compute partners" — not available today, but signalled.
What this means in practice: ChatGPT is the better choice if you need Australian data residency right now on a paid business plan that won't break the bank. Claude is the better choice if you care about which vendor is investing in the country long-term, or if you handle work where vendor commitment matters (government-adjacent, regulated, or research).
For solo professionals on consumer plans, neither tool currently offers Australian data residency. Both store conversations on US infrastructure by default. If that's a hard requirement, the answer in this category is Microsoft Copilot — not these two.
Who should pick what
The right answer depends on the work, not the brand.
If you're a lawyer, consultant, accountant, or financial adviser working with long documents, structured analysis, and high-stakes writing — go with Claude Pro on annual billing. The output quality on document work is the feature. A$28 a month with GST already included undercuts ChatGPT Plus, which is A$30 before OpenAI adds GST, and you get Claude Code and Cowork in the bundle for free.
If you're a marketing professional, content creator, or solo operator who needs a Swiss-army tool — go with ChatGPT Plus. Image generation alone is worth the price difference. Voice mode, Custom GPTs, and Deep Research close the case.
If you're a developer or technical operator — slight edge to Claude Pro on current coding benchmarks (Claude Opus 5, which Anthropic positions for "complex agentic coding and enterprise work"), plus Claude Code is included in Pro. ChatGPT's Codex is the alternative on Plus and above. Either way, this is the one comparison where both are genuinely competitive.
If you’re a small business owner buying for a team — this one is now a genuine trade-off, and it moved this month. ChatGPT Business Standard is the cheaper seat, at A$28 a seat before GST, roughly A$30.80 with it. Claude Team Standard is A$34 a seat on annual billing with GST included, five-seat minimum, or A$43 month to month. You are paying about A$3 a seat a month more for stronger data controls, no model training by default, and better default output on document work. If your team leans on image generation or Custom GPTs, take ChatGPT Business and the saving. If it lives in documents, Claude is still worth the difference.
If you're in regulated work (legal, health, finance) needing AU data residency today — neither is the right answer on consumer plans. ChatGPT Enterprise clears that bar; Microsoft Copilot clears it at PROTECTED level. Read those reviews instead.
If you're new to AI and want one tool to learn on — ChatGPT Plus. Broader ecosystem, more public learning resources, better-known interface.
Our verdict
This isn't a tie. Both tools score 21/25 on our framework, but they're not the same product solving the same problem. For the central use case this publication serves — Australian professionals doing serious writing, document work, and analysis — Claude Pro on annual billing is the better tool and the better value in 2026. A$28 a month with GST already included, no ads, default output that needs less editing, longer working context, and a vendor that has visibly invested in Australia. The only reasons to choose ChatGPT instead are images, voice, and breadth — all real, all valid, but none of them the central job.
If your work depends on writing well or reading carefully, get Claude. If it depends on doing many things in many media, get ChatGPT. If you can afford both — many serious operators run both — Claude is your daily driver and ChatGPT is your visual and voice toolbox. That is A$28 for Claude Pro on annual billing plus A$30 for ChatGPT Plus — about A$61 a month once GST is counted on both. Fewer Australian businesses will regret that combination than will regret picking the wrong one and trying to make it work.

Frequently asked questions
Which is cheaper for an Australian user?
At the entry tier, ChatGPT — Go is A$13/month, about A$14.30 with GST. At the serious-use tier, Claude Pro on annual billing at A$28/month, GST included, is the cheapest premium AI in the category — about A$5/month less than ChatGPT Plus, which is A$30 before OpenAI adds GST at checkout.
Can I use both?
Yes — and many professional users do. Claude as the writing and reading workhorse; ChatGPT for images, voice, and tasks Claude doesn’t cover. That is A$28 for Claude Pro on annual billing plus A$30 for ChatGPT Plus — about A$61 a month once GST is counted on both. Disable model training in both apps’ settings if you handle sensitive client material.
Will my data train the model?
ChatGPT consumer plans train on conversations by default — turn it off in Settings → Data Controls. Claude consumer plans do not train on conversations by default. Claude Team and Enterprise plans, and ChatGPT Business and Enterprise plans, do not train on your business data (claude.com/pricing · openai.com/business/chatgpt-pricing).
Do either of them charge in Australian dollars?
Both do, as of September 2026. Anthropic shows Australian visitors A$28/month for Claude Pro on annual billing, A$34 monthly, and Max from A$170.01, with the page stating "Prices include 10% GST". OpenAI shows Go at A$13, Plus at A$30 and Pro from A$155, and adds GST at checkout. Claude Enterprise seats are the one tier still quoted in US dollars.
Which has Australian data residency?
ChatGPT today, on Enterprise / Edu / Healthcare / API customer plans only (openai.com/index/expanding-data-residency-access-to-business-customers-worldwide). Claude is "exploring AU local capacity via third-party partners" but not offering AU residency on any plan today (anthropic.com/news/sydney-fourth-office-asia-pacific). For data residency at IRAP PROTECTED level, the answer in this category is Microsoft Copilot.
Is Claude really better at writing?
In our four-week testing window, yes — measurably less editing required on professional writing tasks (proposals, board papers, client communications). The gap is smaller than it was 12 months ago because ChatGPT's GPT-5 reasoning has improved, but Claude still produces stronger first drafts on document-centric work. For social copy, marketing taglines, or playful writing, ChatGPT is competitive.
Can I claim either as a business expense in Australia?
For tools used in producing assessable income, generally yes — and both now bill in Australian dollars. Anthropic states its prices include 10% GST; OpenAI adds GST at checkout for Australian accounts. Check the tax invoice for the supplier’s identifier and the GST line either way. Talk to your accountant before treating it as deductible. This is general commentary, not tax advice.
How often will this comparison be updated?
Quarterly at minimum, and immediately on any material change to pricing, model lineup, or Australian availability for either tool. The "last reviewed" date at the top of the page is the source of truth.
What we changed our minds about
When we ran the original five-review pack in May 2026, we had ChatGPT at 21/25 and Claude at 20/25 — Claude scored lower on Australian Fit because Anthropic had no visible local presence. The 10 March 2026 Sydney office announcement, the AU Government MOU, the named local customers, and the publicly stated intent to add Australian compute capacity changed that materially. Claude's AU Fit lifted from 3/5 to 4/5; the overall score lifted to 21/25 and the gap closed. In September 2026 Anthropic went further and began billing Australians in Australian dollars, GST included — half of what its Australian Fit score was waiting for. We re-scored that criterion and held it at 4/5, because consumer data residency is the other half and has not landed. If Anthropic adds Australian data residency on a consumer plan in the next 12 months, the gap closes further — and Claude takes the category outright.
We'll update when that happens.
