n8n review (2026): the automation tool that can keep your data in Australia
- From
- Free · self-hosted Community Edition free forever · n8n Cloud from EUR 20/mo billed annually, billed in euros
The gate: Australian Fit 4/5 clears it, so five stars are permitted.
Skip to the verdictVerdict (TL;DR): n8n's free, self-hostable Community Edition plus per-execution Cloud pricing from ~A$31/mo (EUR 20, billed annually) makes it the best-value automation tool in the category for multi-step work. Buy it if you have some technical capability and need your data to stay onshore — self-host it in an Australian region and you get something Zapier and Make can't offer. Skip it if you're a non-technical solo operator who just wants click-to-connect simplicity with AUD billing.
Verdict: n8n is the most capable, best-value workflow automation tool we've reviewed for Australian businesses — if you have someone technical in the building. The headline reason to care, more than the price, is data sovereignty: n8n is the rare mainstream automation platform you can run on your own infrastructure, including in an Australian cloud region, so your customer and financial data never leaves the country. That single capability is something Zapier and Make structurally cannot match. The trade-off is honesty about who it's for. This is a node-and-connection builder aimed at technical operators, not a 35-year-old non-technical business owner who wants to click two logos together. Cloud plans are billed in euros with no AUD option and unclear GST handling, and the free self-hosted edition hands you the running of it — security, backups, uptime. Get past that, and n8n is excellent.
What it is and who owns it
n8n (pronounced "n-eight-n", short for "nodemation") is a workflow automation platform. You build automations visually by dragging "nodes" onto a canvas and wiring them together: a trigger fires (a new Xero invoice, an inbound webhook, a schedule), data flows through transformation and logic nodes, and actions happen at the end (create a HubSpot deal, send a Slack message, call an API). In plain terms, it does the same job as Zapier or Make — moving data between your apps without you writing glue code — but it exposes far more of the machinery, which is both its strength and its learning curve.
It's built by n8n GmbH, a company based in Berlin, Germany. That EU origin matters for two reasons we'll return to: billing is in euros, and the Cloud product's data sits in the European Union, not Australia.
A point of confusion worth clearing up early: n8n is source-available, not open-source. It's released under the Sustainable Use License — n8n's own "fair-code" model — which lets you self-host and use it freely for internal business purposes but restricts certain commercial uses (you can't, for example, repackage it as a competing hosted service). It is not OSI-approved open-source. For most Australian SMBs this distinction is academic — you can run it free, forever, on your own server — but if your use case involves reselling automation-as-a-service, read the licence first.
Pricing in AUD (and the metering trap)
There are two ways to get n8n, and they're priced completely differently.
The free path — Community Edition (self-hosted). This is the headline. n8n's Community Edition is free forever, source-available, and you install it yourself via Docker or npm on infrastructure you control. There is no per-execution charge at all — you can run unlimited workflows, paying only for the server you're running it on. For a business with a technical person and a cheap cloud VM, this is genuinely the best value in the category.
The paid path — Cloud and licensed self-host. All paid pricing is in euros (n8n is an EU vendor), so an Australian buyer pays FX on top. Converted at EUR→AUD 1.6095 (Frankfurter/ECB reference rate, 18 September 2026):
| Plan | Price | Approx AUD |
|---|---|---|
| Community Edition (self-hosted) | Free (Sustainable Use Licence) | $0 |
| Starter (Cloud) | EUR 20/mo, billed annually | ~A$32/mo |
| Pro (Cloud) | EUR 50/mo, billed annually | ~A$80/mo |
| Business (self-hosted, licensed) | EUR 667/mo, billed annually | ~A$1,074/mo |
| Enterprise | Contact Sales | Custom |
A few AU-buyer caveats. The EUR 20 (Starter) and EUR 50 (Pro) figures are the monthly-equivalent of annual billing; month-to-month is about 17% dearer (Starter around EUR 24/mo). Either way it's euros, with no AUD option.
The metering trap — and why n8n mostly wins it. This is where n8n's pricing model genuinely beats the competition. n8n charges per workflow execution, not per step or per operation. In its own words: "An execution is a single run of your entire workflow. It doesn't matter how many steps are in the workflow... it's still a single execution." So a 30-step automation costs the same single execution as a 2-step one. Compare that to Zapier (per-task — every step is a billable task) and Make (per-operation), where a multi-step workflow multiplies your cost. For anyone doing real, multi-step automation, this is materially cheaper.
But the trap is real, so be specific about it. On Cloud, the allowances are tight: Starter gives you only 2,500 executions/month, Pro 10,000, Business 40,000. High-frequency polling triggers (checking an inbox every minute), looping workflows, or per-record fan-out (one run per row in a 500-row spreadsheet) can burn through 2,500 executions faster than you'd think. Worse, overage is sold in blunt buckets — Business overage is EUR 4,000 for an extra 300,000 executions, so there's no smooth scaling; you either fit under the cap or buy a huge block. And here's the subtle bit: each sub-workflow call and each failed or retried run can count as its own execution, inflating your count beyond what "one run = one execution" implies. We'll flag that the exact sub-workflow and retry counting rules are not clearly documented — the relevant n8n docs page returned a 404 at the time of research, so confirm on current docs before you build a high-volume architecture around the headline rule.
The clean escape from all of this: self-host on Community Edition. No per-execution metering exists at all. Your only cost is the server.
Ease of use
Be honest with yourself here. n8n is more technical than Zapier or Make. The node-graph canvas is powerful and, for someone who thinks in data flows, genuinely pleasant — you can see exactly what data is moving and transform it mid-flight. But for the non-technical operator this directory is usually written for, it's a real step up. You'll meet JSON, expressions, and the occasional need to read API docs. The native AI assistance softens the curve, but it doesn't erase it.
Self-hosting raises the bar again — now you're also responsible for Docker, updates, and keeping the thing running. If "deploy via Docker" made your eyes glaze, the Cloud version (or a tool with a gentler UI) is the honest recommendation. This is why ease of use scores a middling 3/5: approachable for technical users, a meaningful hurdle for everyone else.
Features and AI capability
On raw capability, n8n is a 5/5. There are 1,000+ app integrations, plus a generic HTTP Request node that lets you wire up essentially anything with an API — so even apps without a dedicated node are reachable. There are code nodes for custom logic when the visual builder runs out of room.
The AI layer is where n8n quietly outclasses most of the category. It ships dedicated AI / LangChain cluster nodes: proper AI Agent nodes (Tools Agent, Conversational, ReAct, Plan-and-Execute, OpenAI Functions, SQL Agent), a Basic LLM Chain, a Q&A (RAG) chain, summarisation, text classifiers, a Chat Trigger for building conversational or webhook chat apps, and a LangChain Code node for custom logic. Model access is broad and provider-agnostic — OpenAI, Anthropic (Claude), Google Gemini, Azure OpenAI, Mistral, Groq, Perplexity, Cohere, HuggingFace — and, crucially, local models via Ollama. That last point is the one to underline: the Ollama-plus-self-host combination means an Australian business can run AI agents entirely onshore, with no data leaving the country. Among mainstream automation tools, that's rare.
Australian fit — the part that matters most
This is the category's editorial moat, and it's where n8n earns its keep.
Data residency. This is n8n's strongest and weakest angle at once, depending on how you deploy.
- Cloud: n8n states its physical hardware and stored data are "currently hosted in the European Union" on Microsoft Azure (Frankfurt). There is no Australian region, and no Azure-Australia region, for n8n Cloud. So if you sign up for the Cloud product, your execution data sits in the EU — onshore residency is not available this way. We'd also flag that whether n8n offers any non-EU (e.g. US) Cloud region is undocumented; only EU/Frankfurt is confirmed.
- Self-host: the decisive option. Both the free Community Edition and the licensed Business/Enterprise self-host run entirely on infrastructure you control. Deploy in Azure Australia East, AWS Sydney, or on-prem, and every execution, credential and byte of customer data stays onshore. This is the capability Zapier and Make cannot offer, and it's the single best reason an Australian business with compliance or sovereignty requirements would choose n8n.
Compliance posture. n8n states it "aligns its security program to SOC 2" with continuous evaluation and annual independent audits, publishes a downloadable SOC 3 report (full SOC 2 available to enterprise customers), and runs a public Trust Center (SafeBase). GDPR is addressed in its privacy docs. Two cautions: ISO 27001 and HIPAA are — n8n does not assert these on its own security page, so don't treat them as held certifications. And for self-hosting, n8n notes that encrypting data at rest beyond credentials is your responsibility — sovereignty is yours to configure, not a default.
AUD billing and ABN. No AUD billing — Cloud is euro-priced, with FX cost and the unresolved GST/ABN-tax-invoice question covered above. This is the main drag on the Australian Fit score.
Connecting the AU stack. Partial coverage of the core trio. - Xero: native built-in node (focused on Contacts and Invoices; the broader Xero API is reachable via the HTTP Request node). - HubSpot: native built-in node, well-supported across multiple objects. - MYOB: no official node. You're relying on a community-built npm package (e.g. n8n-nodes-myob) installed via Settings > Community Nodes, the generic HTTP Request node against the MYOB Business API, or a third-party CData connector. Workable, but unsupported by the vendor.
Net: two-thirds of the core AU SMB stack is natively covered, MYOB needs a workaround, and the HTTP node fills almost any remaining gap. Combined with onshore self-host, that's strong enough for a 4/5 — losing a point only for the no-AU-Cloud-region, no-AUD-billing, and MYOB gaps.
Limitations
- More technical than Zapier/Make — the node-graph builder is aimed at technical operators, not a non-technical solo owner.
- No AUD billing — Cloud is euro-priced, so AU buyers carry FX cost; GST/ABN tax-invoice handling isn't documented on n8n's pages.
- n8n Cloud has no Australian region — Cloud data sits in the EU; onshore residency requires self-hosting (and the DevOps to run it).
- Self-hosting shifts security, encryption-at-rest, backups, updates and uptime onto you.
- No native MYOB node — community package or HTTP/API workarounds only.
- Cloud execution allowances are modest (Starter 2,500/mo) and overage comes in blunt buckets. Only production executions count toward the quota; manual and sub-workflow runs don't (per n8n's docs) — but failed/retried production runs aren't documented as exempt, so budget conservatively.
- No ISO 27001 or HIPAA — n8n's own security page lists SOC 2 (with a downloadable SOC 3 report) and GDPR only; don't assume the rest. Support runs Berlin and New-York business hours, with no Australian presence.
- Sustainable Use Licence is "fair-code", not OSI open-source — commercial-use restrictions apply.
How it scores
| Criterion | Score | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Value for Money | 5/5 | Free, self-hostable Community Edition plus per-execution Cloud from ~A$31/mo — the best value in the category |
| Ease of Use | 3/5 | Exposes far more power than Zapier or Make, but needs some technical capability; execution counting has subtleties |
| Feature Depth | 5/5 | The most capable workflow tool here — self-host in an AU region and run AI agents on local (Ollama) or API models |
| Australian Fit | 4/5 | Self-hosted in an Australian region keeps data fully onshore; n8n Cloud has no AU region and bills in euros |
| Reliability & Support | 4/5 | Self-hosting shifts security, backups and uptime onto you; no native MYOB node |
| Total | 21/25 | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent |
Verdict
n8n is the best-value, most capable automation tool in this category for Australian businesses with some technical capability — an in-house developer, a technical ops lead, or an automation consultant on retainer. The standout use case is unambiguous: a self-hosted deployment in an Australian cloud region, running AI agents on local (Ollama) or API models, keeping every byte of customer and financial data onshore. That combination of power, value and data sovereignty is something Zapier and Make simply cannot offer, and it's why n8n scores 21/25 here.
It is not the right pick for a non-technical solo operator who wants click-to-connect simplicity, AUD billing on the card, and a vendor support line. That buyer is better served by a friendlier SaaS tool — and we'd say so plainly. But if you can clear the technical bar, n8n is the one to beat.
Update history
- 21 Sep 2026 (2) — The AUD column was converting euros at the US dollar rate, so every figure was about 15% low. n8n is an EU vendor and prices in euros — EUR 20 / 50 / 667 a month billed annually, confirmed by browser today. This review converted them “at roughly 1.40 EUR-to-AUD”. 1.40 is the USD→AUD rate, and that is how it got here: the September FX rebase swept one rate across the corpus, and this is the review whose vendor does not take dollars. At the euro rate on the same reference date the corpus already cites, EUR→AUD 1.6095 (Frankfurter/ECB, 18 Sep 2026): EUR 20 = A$32.19 (published ~A$31), EUR 50 = A$80.48 (published ~A$78), EUR 667 = A$1,073.54 (published ~A$1,034). Every figure made the product look cheaper than it is, which is the direction that costs a reader money. Corrected throughout and the basis is now stated with its currency pair and date, as our AUD pricing rule requires. No score change — Value for Money rests mainly on the free, self-hostable Community Edition, which is untouched, and this was our arithmetic rather than a vendor change.
billed_in: EURandaud_native: falsewere already set correctly. - 21 Sep 2026 🇦🇺 Currency verified by browser — still euros, confirmed.
n8n.io/pricingrenders 20€ / 50€ / 667€ per month billed annually. No dollar figure of any kind, no currency control, and no GST, VAT or tax wording anywhere on the page. Plan names, figures and execution allowances all match this review. One thing to fix on the next pass: the AUD column here converts at "roughly 1.40 EUR-to-AUD", which is the USD→AUD rate, not the euro one — so the A$31 / A$78 / A$1,074 figures are built on the wrong pair. Left unchanged rather than guessed at, because our AUD pricing rule requires a rate verified at time of write.aud_native: false,billed_in: EURset explicitly. No score change. - 2 Sep 2026 — Pricing re-verified against n8n's live pricing page: unchanged. Starter EUR 20/mo and Pro EUR 50/mo (billed annually), Business EUR 667/mo, execution allowances 2,500 / 10,000 / 40,000 per month, Business overage EUR 4,000 per 300,000 executions, self-hosted Community Edition still free. Frequently asked questions
Is n8n available in Australia?
Yes. You can sign up for n8n Cloud or self-host the free Community Edition from anywhere, including Australia. It is built by n8n GmbH in Berlin, with support running Berlin and New-York business hours and no Australian presence.
Does n8n charge in AUD?
No. All paid pricing is in euros, so an Australian buyer pays FX on top, and GST/ABN tax-invoice handling is not documented on n8n's pages. At EUR→AUD 1.6095 (Frankfurter/ECB, 18 September 2026), the Starter Cloud plan works out around A$32/month billed annually.
Is there a free plan?
Yes — and it is the headline. The Community Edition is free forever, source-available, and self-hosted via Docker or npm with no per-execution charge at all. You pay only for the server you run it on.
Can n8n keep my data in Australia?
Yes, but only if you self-host. n8n Cloud has no Australian region — its data sits in the EU (Azure Frankfurt). Self-host the Community or licensed edition in Azure Australia East, AWS Sydney or on-prem and every byte stays onshore. That is something Zapier and Make cannot offer.
Who is n8n for?
Australian businesses with technical capability — an in-house developer, technical ops lead, or automation consultant. It is more technical than Zapier or Make. A non-technical solo operator wanting click-to-connect simplicity and AUD billing is better served elsewhere.
