Hnry Review 2026: Automated Tax for Australian Sole Traders

The gate: Australian Fit 5/5 clears it, so five stars are permitted.
Skip to the verdictThe verdict: If you're an Australian sole trader who dreads tax — the BAS, the income tax, the receipts shoved in a drawer — Hnry is the closest thing to making it disappear. Money lands in your Hnry account, tax and GST are deducted on the spot, the rest hits your bank in minutes, and a team of accountants files your returns. It costs 1% of your income plus GST, capped at $1,500 +GST a year. It is genuinely Australian-operated, bills in AUD, and runs on a licensed Australian payments platform. The catch: it's automation, not artificial intelligence, and it's built for sole traders only — companies and trusts need to look elsewhere. For its target user, it's one of the easiest yes-es we've scored. 24/25 — ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent.
What it is
Hnry is an automated tax and financial-admin service for sole traders and contractors. You give clients a Hnry bank account to pay into. The moment money arrives, Hnry calculates and sets aside your income tax, GST and Medicare levy, then forwards the rest to your personal bank account — usually within minutes. A team of accountants lodges your income tax return and BAS when they fall due. The same service handles your invoicing, chases unpaid invoices, logs your expenses, and claims your deductions as you go.
The pitch is blunt and accurate: never think about tax again. You stop being your own bookkeeper.
One thing to be clear-eyed about, because we score honestly: despite sitting in our Finance & Accounting AI category, Hnry is not an "AI" tool in the large-language-model sense. There's no chatbot, no generative model writing your return. It's rules-based automation plus real human accountants. We include it because it's the automation tool most likely to actually change a sole trader's financial life — but don't expect a ChatGPT-style assistant.
Hnry started in Wellington, New Zealand in 2017 and launched in Australia in 2020. It now serves tens of thousands of Australian sole traders.
What it costs in Australia (AUD + GST)
Hnry's pricing is refreshingly simple, and it's priced natively in Australian dollars.
- 1% +GST of every payment into your Hnry account.
- Capped at $1,500 +GST per year — once you've paid that, the rest of the year is free.
- No subscription. If you earn nothing in a month, you pay nothing.
- A minimum charge of $0.50 +GST applies to individual payments under $50.
So 1% +GST works out to 1.1% of each payment, GST included. On $80,000 of sole-trader income, that's roughly $880 inc. GST for the year — and Hnry claims its own fee back as a business deduction on your behalf, so the after-tax cost is lower again. Earn $200,000 and you still only pay the $1,500 +GST cap (about $1,650 inc. GST), making Hnry proportionally cheaper the more you earn.
For comparison, a standard sole-trader accountant might charge $300–$800 just to prepare one annual return, and that's before bookkeeping or BAS lodgments. Hnry rolls all of it — invoicing, expenses, every BAS, the annual return, and unlimited accountant access — into the one capped fee.
Hnry also states it has never raised its prices. We can't independently verify that history, but the published rate today is the rate above.
How it works / features (be specific)
The mechanics are the clever part. Here's the flow:
- You invoice through Hnry (or give clients your Hnry account details). Invoices are unlimited, and Hnry will chase late payers for you.
- A client pays into your Hnry account. Behind the scenes this is a virtual account number and PayID issued through Hnry's payments partner, Monoova.
- Hnry instantly calculates your tax. It works out income tax, GST and the Medicare levy on that payment, plus any student-loan repayments, and deducts them.
- The rest is forwarded to your personal bank account — typically within minutes — and you get an email confirming the split.
- Set-asides happen automatically. You can route slices of each payment to savings, super, or an investment account on the way through.
- Expenses are logged by photo. Snap a receipt; Hnry's accountants categorise it and apply the right tax relief as you go, rather than in a year-end scramble.
- Returns are lodged for you. Hnry's accounting team files your BAS and annual income tax return on time, included in the fee.
The standout design choice is that Hnry flexes your tax rate up and down through the year based on what you've actually earned and claimed, rather than withholding a flat percentage. The practical result: instead of a refund landing months after 30 June, your over-payments are returned to you across the year. That's a real cash-flow advantage for someone living off variable income.
What it does well
It removes a genuine source of dread. For a lot of sole traders, tax isn't hard because the maths is complex — it's hard because it's a year of deferred admin that lands all at once. Hnry converts that into a background process. That's worth a lot.
The pricing aligns with your income. You pay when you earn and nothing when you don't. The cap protects high earners, and the fee is tax-deductible. Few professional services price this fairly for someone whose income swings month to month.
Real accountants, not just software. Unlimited access to a team that specialises in sole traders means you can ask "can I claim this?" and get an answer from a person, included in the fee. That's the difference between Hnry and a DIY bookkeeping app.
The cash-flow handling is smart. Fluctuating the tax rate and returning over-payments through the year, rather than at year-end, is the kind of detail that shows the product was built by people who understand self-employed money.
Where it falls short
We don't publish a review until we've found the limits. Hnry has real ones.
It's sole traders only. If you operate through a company or a trust, Hnry isn't for you — it's built around the individual ABN. Growing businesses can outgrow it.
You give up direct control of your income flow. Every client payment routes through Hnry's account before reaching your bank. For most users that's the entire point, but if you want money landing directly in your own account and full hands-on control of your tax timing, this model will feel restrictive.
It is not a full accounting suite. There's no double-entry ledger, no inventory, no payroll for staff, limited deep reporting. It does sole-trader tax extremely well and deliberately doesn't try to be Xero or MYOB. If you need those, Hnry is the wrong tool.
The 1% can cost more than a basic accountant — at the right income. On modest income the capped 1% is excellent value. But a steady earner around the $40,000–$60,000 mark who only needs a once-a-year return prepared could pay an accountant a flat $400–$600 and come out ahead on raw cost. You're paying for the automation and the year-round service, not just the lodgment — decide whether you value those.
It's automation, not advice you'd bet a complex affair on. Hnry covers standard sole-trader tax well. Genuinely complicated situations — multiple income structures, large capital gains, intricate deductions — may still need a dedicated accountant. Hnry doesn't replace qualified, tailored professional advice for an unusual tax position.
Australian fit
This is where Hnry earns its keep for our readers.
Is it AU-operated? Yes, with an asterisk worth stating plainly. Hnry is New Zealand-founded (Wellington, 2017) and trans-Tasman, but it runs a genuine Australian operation: an Australian sole-trader product, an Australian accounting team that lodges directly with the ATO, and AUD-native billing.
Payments rails. The Hnry account is powered by Monoova, which operates under Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL) 421414 issued by ASIC. So the money movement sits on regulated, locally licensed infrastructure — not an offshore workaround.
AUD billing and GST. Pricing is set in Australian dollars, the 1% fee is quoted "+GST," and the fee is claimed back as a business deduction. No currency conversion, no guessing at GST treatment.
Data residency — the caveat. Hnry's privacy policy states it may store customer information "in New Zealand, Australia or overseas," and notes compliance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). It does not guarantee your data stays onshore in Australia. For most sole traders that's an acceptable trade-off, but if onshore-only data residency is a hard requirement for you, confirm specifics with Hnry before signing up. We've flagged this rather than smoothed over it.
On balance, Hnry is about as Australian-fit as a trans-Tasman service gets: AUD pricing, GST-aware, ATO lodgments, AFSL-licensed rails, local accountants. The one open question is data location.
Tax Practitioners Board guidance (final, 22 July 2026). If a registered tax or BAS agent runs Hnry's AI features on your file, the TPB's Guidance Statement TPB(GS) 55/2026 applies to the agent, not the software: they stay accountable for the accuracy of every output, must exercise their own judgement rather than rely on the AI, and must not put your information into an AI model without your permission and a clear answer on where the data is stored. Nothing here changes those obligations — and none of it replaces advice from a registered practitioner. Our explainer of the guidance.
Score
| Criterion | Score | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Value for Money | 5/5 | 1% capped at $1,500 +GST, pay-as-you-earn, fee is deductible. Rare fairness for variable income. |
| Ease of Use | 5/5 | Money in, tax out, rest forwarded in minutes. Removes the admin rather than reorganising it. |
| Feature Depth | 4/5 | Deep at its one job — tax, GST, invoicing, expenses, lodgments. Not a general accounting suite. |
| Australian Fit | 5/5 | AUD billing, GST-aware, ATO lodgments, Monoova AFSL rails, AU accountants. Data-location caveat noted. |
| Reliability & Support | 5/5 | Real accountant team included, licensed payments partner, established 2020 in AU. |
| Total | 24/25 | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent |
Australian Fit is 5/5, so this clears the Australian Fit gate for a five-star rating and a Top Pick.
Bottom line
If you're a sole trader or contractor who hates tax admin: this is close to a no-brainer. Hnry takes the part of self-employment you dread and makes it a background process, for a fee that scales with what you earn. Strongly recommended.
If you're a high earner on a variable income: the cap and the year-round tax-rate flexing work especially in your favour. The proportional cost falls as your income rises. Recommended.
If you run a company or trust, or need full accounting (payroll, inventory, deep reporting): Hnry isn't built for you. Look at Xero or MYOB with an accountant instead.
If you're a steady, low-complexity earner who just wants one annual return filed cheaply: do the maths. A flat-fee accountant might cost less in raw dollars. You're paying Hnry for automation and year-round service — decide if that's worth it for you.
For the right person, Hnry is one of the most genuinely useful tools we've reviewed for Australian sole traders. 24/25 — Excellent, and a Top Pick for sole-trader tax.
