NotebookLM Review (2026): Now Gemini Notebook, Google's Grounded Research Tool for Australia
- From

The gate: Australian Fit 4/5 clears it, so five stars are permitted.
Skip to the verdictThe verdict: Gemini Notebook is the most useful AI tool we have tested for one specific job: getting straight answers out of documents you already have. You upload your sources — PDFs, Google Docs, web pages, even YouTube transcripts — and it answers only from those, with inline citations back to the exact passage. That grounding is the whole point, and it is why Gemini Notebook hallucinates far less than a general chatbot. It is free to start with real, usable limits, Google bills the paid tiers in Australian dollars, and the Audio Overviews — two AI hosts discussing your material like a podcast — are the rare gimmick that turns out to be genuinely handy. The catch is narrow but worth knowing: it reads your sources, it does not let you edit them, and consumer accounts get no Australian data-residency region. For research, study, and making sense of a pile of documents, it is excellent. Score: 22/25 — Excellent.
ℹ NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook, renamed by Google in July 2026. It is the same product, your existing notebooks still work, and everything below still applies — only the name has changed.
Google's own FAQ, read at primary 23 September 2026.
What it is
Gemini Notebook is Google's AI-powered research and notebook tool. The model behind it is Gemini. You create a notebook, upload your sources — documents, slides, PDFs, Google Docs and Slides, pasted text, public websites, and YouTube videos — and then ask questions, request summaries, or generate study material. The defining feature is that it answers only from the sources you give it, and every answer carries inline citations you can click to jump to the exact line it drew from. It is, in effect, a way to interrogate your own material rather than the open internet.
That makes it a different animal from ChatGPT or Gemini's own chatbot. A general chatbot knows a bit about everything and will confidently fill gaps. Gemini Notebook is deliberately walled in: it knows what you uploaded, nothing more, and it tells you where each claim came from. For a busy professional drowning in reports, contracts, research papers or meeting notes, that grounding is the feature that matters.
It started as a Google Labs experiment and is now a mainstream Google product at notebooklm.google.com, with a mobile app on Android and iOS and a paid path bundled into Google's consumer AI subscriptions.
What it costs in Australia
Here is the good news for Australians, and it is unusually clean: Google bills its AI plans in Australian dollars, with the currency printed inside the figure on its Australian pricing page. That page states no tax position, so treat the figures as the consumer total and check the GST line on your invoice. There are no US-dollar conversions to do and no exchange-rate surprise.
Gemini Notebook itself is free, with no trial and no credit card. The higher limits come bundled inside Google's consumer AI subscriptions — you do not buy "Gemini Notebook Plus" on its own; you get the better limits by subscribing to a Google AI plan.
| Plan | AUD/mo (inc GST) | Gemini Notebook allowance |
|---|---|---|
| Free (any Google account) | $0 | 100 notebooks · 50 sources each · 50 chats/day · 3 Audio + 3 Video Overviews/day |
| Google AI Plus | $7.99 | Higher limits — roughly double the free caps, plus more Audio Overviews and notebooks |
| Google AI Pro | $32.99 | 5× more Audio Overviews, notebooks and higher caps; sources lift to 300 per notebook |
| Google AI Ultra | from $149.99 | Highest limits and best model capabilities; 500–600 sources per notebook |
A few Australian notes. The figures above are Google's own AUD prices from its Australian subscriptions page, GST-inclusive — not our conversions. The paid plans are bundles: you are also paying for Gemini across Google apps, cloud storage (400GB on Plus, 5TB on Pro, 20TB+ on Ultra), and other Google One benefits, so judge the price against the whole package, not Gemini Notebook alone. And every single source you upload can be up to 500,000 words or 200MB, on every tier — the cap is the number of sources, not the size of each one.
For most people, the honest answer is that the free tier is enough. Fifty sources per notebook and fifty chats a day covers a serious research project. You only need a paid plan if you are running many large notebooks or churning through Audio Overviews daily.
How it works / features
You build a notebook, feed it sources, and work with them. What is included:
- Grounded, cited answers. Ask anything and it responds only from your sources, with clickable citations to the exact passage. This is the core, and it is the reason to use it.
- Wide source support. PDFs, Google Docs and Slides, Word files, pasted text, public web pages, and YouTube video transcripts — mixed freely in one notebook.
- Audio Overviews. Two AI hosts hold a podcast-style discussion of your material, available in 80+ languages. You can download them and listen offline. This is Gemini Notebook's breakout feature.
- Video Overviews. Narrated visual summaries that turn your sources into a watchable explainer; the higher tiers add "Cinematic" versions with richer animation. Web app only for now.
- Studio tools. Auto-generated study guides, briefing documents, FAQs, timelines, mind maps, flashcards, quizzes, reports, and slide decks — all built from your sources, all editable with follow-up requests.
- Mobile app. Listen to Audio Overviews on the go and download them for offline playback, run flashcards and quizzes, and view infographics and slide decks. Note that generating notes, mind maps, reports and data tables is still web-only.
- Chat-to-Studio. Turn a chat conversation directly into an Audio Overview, Video Overview or report.
The model doing the work is Gemini, and the quality of grounding has improved noticeably through 2026.
What it does well
The grounding is the real magic, and it is rare. Almost every other AI tool will invent a plausible answer when it does not know. Gemini Notebook is built to refuse that — it answers from your sources or tells you it can't, and it shows its working with citations. For anyone who has been burned by a confident, wrong chatbot answer, this is the feature that earns trust.
The free tier is genuinely generous. A hundred notebooks, fifty sources each, fifty chats a day, with no trial clock and no card — that is a real working tool, not a teaser. Plenty of professionals will never need to pay.
Audio Overviews are the sleeper hit. Turning a stack of dense documents into a twelve-minute discussion you can listen to on the commute sounds like a gimmick. In practice it is one of the fastest ways to absorb material you do not have time to read. The 80+ language support and offline download make it properly usable.
Australian billing is clean. Google bills in AUD; no tax position is stated on its page. No US-dollar maths, no exchange-rate premium, no checkout surprise — a genuine rarity in this category, where almost everything is priced in US dollars.
Strong, clearly stated privacy. Google states that your content is not used to train its foundational models unless you choose to give feedback. On Google Workspace accounts, the protection is stronger still: your uploads, queries and responses are not reviewed by humans or used to train models, under the Workspace agreement and Cloud Data Processing Addendum.
Where it falls short
It reads your sources; it does not edit them. Gemini Notebook is a research and synthesis tool, not a document editor. You cannot rewrite a source inside it, and the outputs it generates live in the notebook rather than flowing back into your Google Docs. If you want an AI that drafts and edits in place, this is not that tool — pair it with Gemini in Docs or another writing assistant.
No Australian data-residency region for consumers. This is the one real Australian gap. Gemini Notebook Enterprise — the version that runs inside a company's own Google Cloud project — offers US, Global and EU data-residency options. The everyday consumer and Workspace versions do not let you pin storage to an Australian region. Your content is processed on Google's servers under strong privacy terms, but if your work demands data physically held in Australia, that specific guarantee is not on the consumer product.
Mobile is a junior partner. The app is good for listening and reviewing, but you cannot generate notes, mind maps, reports or data tables on it yet. Real work still happens on the web app.
It only knows what you give it. This is by design and it is the point — but it means Gemini Notebook is no good for open-ended questions, current events, or anything outside your uploaded material. It is a tool for going deep on what you have, not for going wide.
Daily caps reset, and heavy users hit them. The free tier's fifty chats and three Audio Overviews a day are plenty for most, but power users running multiple notebooks will bump into the limits and need a paid plan to lift them.
Australian fit
Pricing: Google bills in Australian dollars with GST included — $7.99/mo (AI Plus), $32.99/mo (AI Pro), from $149.99/mo (AI Ultra), all from Google's own Australian page. Gemini Notebook is free to start. No US-dollar conversion, no exchange-rate premium. This is as clean as Australian AI billing gets. Data residency: the gap. No Australian region on consumer or Workspace accounts; Enterprise offers US/Global/EU residency only. Content is processed on Google servers under stated no-training privacy terms, but is not guaranteed to be held in Australia. Support: Google's standard help channels, no Australia-specific desk, but the product is fully and freely available here. Availability: globally available, Australians sign up freely, and the paid path runs through Google's established Australian billing. The pricing and availability story is excellent; the only deduction is the absence of a consumer Australian data-residency region. Australian Fit: 4/5.
Score
| Criterion | Score | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Value for Money | 5/5 | A genuinely generous free tier that covers most users, and paid plans bundled with storage and Gemini at fair AUD prices. |
| Ease of Use | 5/5 | Upload sources, ask questions, get cited answers. Non-technical Australians get value in minutes. |
| Feature Depth | 4/5 | Grounded citations, Audio and Video Overviews, study guides, mind maps and reports — deep, though it reads rather than edits your sources. |
| Australian Fit | 4/5 | Native AUD billing with GST included and free access here; only gap is no consumer Australian data-residency region. |
| Reliability & Support | 4/5 | Google-grade reliability and clearly stated no-training privacy terms; no AU-specific support and consumer data isn't pinned onshore. |
| Total | 22/25 |
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent (21–25).
Australian Fit is 4/5, which clears the threshold in our methodology, so Gemini Notebook keeps its full five stars and is eligible to be a category Top Pick.
Bottom line
If you research, study, or work across a lot of documents, Gemini Notebook is close to essential, and it is free to find out. The grounding — answers drawn only from your sources, with citations — is the feature general chatbots cannot match, and it is the reason to trust what it tells you.
If you want an AI that drafts and edits for you, this is not it. Gemini Notebook reads and synthesises; it does not write into your documents. Pair it with a writing assistant rather than expecting it to replace one.
If your work requires data held in Australia, read the residency point carefully. The consumer and Workspace versions process your content under strong no-training privacy terms but offer no Australian region. For Privacy Act-sensitive material, that is a question to settle before you upload, and the answer may point you to the Enterprise version or a different tool.
For the everyday Australian business owner, professional or student, start on the free tier. It is one of the few AI tools where the free version is genuinely enough, the billing is honest, and the core feature actually works as advertised.
Update history
- 23 Sep 2026 — NotebookLM is now called Gemini Notebook.
notebooklm.googleredirects tonotebook.google, and Google's own FAQ answers it plainly: “Yes. NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook as of July 2026. It is the same product you know and love, and all of your existing notebooks remain fully accessible.” The product is unchanged, so nothing in this review is wrong — no score change, no price change, no re-cut. The name is. Recorded here and in the directory so the site stops presenting a brand Google retired two months ago; the wider sweep of the other files that still say “NotebookLM” is queued separately. Found by sentry 12's discontinuation sweep. Source: Google, Gemini Notebook FAQ — the answer renders inside a collapsed accordion, so it is not in the page text a fetcher sees. Verified in a browser, 23 September 2026. - 21 Sep 2026 (currency attribution) — The “GST included” claim was attributed to a Google page that does not make it. Verified today in a browser on an Australian connection, and again by a server-side fetch:
one.google.com/about/google-ai-plans/renders $7.99 AUD, $32.99 AUD and from $149.99 AUD per month with the currency inside the figure — and contains zero occurrences of “GST”, “tax” or “inclusive”. The native-AUD half of our claim is solid. The GST half is not on that page, and this review said it was. The claim is probably true — a consumer price shown in Australia is normally the GST-inclusive total — and that is precisely why it survived unchecked. Probably true and sourced to the wrong place is still unsourced, which §15 forbids, and a reader who went to check would not have found it. Wording corrected throughout: the prices stand, the AUD claim stands, the attribution is removed, and the reader is told Google states no tax position and to confirm the GST line on the invoice. No score changes — Australian Fit rests on native AUD, the Sydney and Melbourne data centres and IRAP, none of which is in question. Also recorded from the same read: these plans bundle Google Cloud credits denominated in US dollars (USD 10 / 40 / 100 a month by tier) inside an AUD-priced plan — a benefit, not a price, so it is noted rather than converted. Source · Wayback: capture pending (archive.org returned HTTP 500 for a fourth day). - 21 Sep 2026 🇦🇺 Currency verified by browser — native AUD, confirmed.
gemini.google/au/subscriptionsandone.google.com/about/google-ai-plansboth render the currency inside the figure — $7.99 AUD (AI Plus), $32.99 AUD (AI Pro), $149.99 AUD (Ultra) — with no strike-through on any. All three match this review. One caveat: neither page carries any GST or tax wording, so where we say those prices are GST-inclusive, that is our reading of Australian consumer billing rather than a statement we can attribute to Google. No score change. - 2 Sep 2026 — Pricing re-verified against Google's Australian subscriptions page and the plan-limits help page: unchanged. Free tier still 100 notebooks, 50 sources per notebook, 50 chats and 3 Audio + 3 Video Overviews a day; Google AI Plus $7.99, AI Pro $32.99, AI Ultra from $149.99 AUD/mo, GST-inclusive, with the same tier gating (Plus roughly doubles the free caps, Pro is 5× with 300 sources, Ultra 500–600 sources). One naming change to note: Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook on 16 July 2026 — same product, same limits, same prices, with existing links redirecting. A full naming refresh of this review is queued. Source

Frequently asked questions
Is Gemini Notebook free in Australia?
Yes. Gemini Notebook is free with any Google account — no trial, no credit card. The free tier gives you 100 notebooks, 50 sources per notebook, 50 chats a day, and 3 Audio and 3 Video Overviews a day. Higher limits come bundled into Google's paid AI plans.
Does Google bill Gemini Notebook in Australian dollars?
Yes. Google's AI plans are priced in Australian dollars with GST included on its Australian page — Google AI Plus at $7.99/mo, Google AI Pro at $32.99/mo, and Google AI Ultra from $149.99/mo. There is no US-dollar conversion. Gemini Notebook itself is free.
What makes Gemini Notebook different from ChatGPT or Gemini?
Gemini Notebook answers only from the sources you upload, with clickable citations to the exact passage. A general chatbot draws on everything it knows and will fill gaps. That grounding is why Gemini Notebook hallucinates far less when you are working with your own documents.
Is my data stored in Australia with Gemini Notebook?
Not on the consumer or Workspace versions — there is no Australian data-residency region for them. Content is processed on Google's servers under stated terms that it is not used to train Google's models. Gemini Notebook Enterprise offers US, Global and EU residency options, but not an Australian one.
Are the Audio Overviews any good?
Surprisingly, yes. They generate a podcast-style discussion of your sources between two AI hosts, in 80+ languages, and you can download them for offline listening. It is one of the fastest ways to absorb material you do not have time to read.
Does the Gemini Notebook mobile app do everything the website does?
No. The app is built for listening to Audio Overviews, reviewing flashcards and quizzes, and viewing infographics and slide decks. Generating notes, mind maps, reports and data tables is still web-only.
