Category verdict

No single Top Pick. The right tool depends on the job; our picks by need are below.

The short version. We have reviewed 48 AI tools built by Australian companies, from Melbourne medical scribes to a Canberra records engine. Most are vertical. They do one job for one Australian industry: award rates, state tenancy rules, exam syllabuses. But "Australian-built" is not the same as "Australian data". 28 of the 48 do not publish a commitment to host Australian data in Australia. Twenty say nothing either way. Eight host offshore by default or offer no Australia-only option, Canva and Smokeball among them. Seven bill only in US dollars.

Last reviewed: 28 October 2026 by Adam. Every score below comes from our full review of that tool, linked from its name.

Our pick in each category

Each pick tops its category among the Australian-built tools we have reviewed. Every pick scores at least 4/5 for Australian Fit, which is our rule for naming a winner. "From" is the cheapest real entry plan in the review, in the currency you are charged.

Category Our pick Score Australian Fit From Billed in Data hosted in Australia?
HR and people analytics Culture Amp 23/25 5/5 Quote only Not published Yes, if you opt in at contract
HR and payroll for SMEs Employment Hero 22/25 4/5 A$10 per employee/mo AUD Yes
Rostering Deputy 21/25 4/5 A$6.75 per user/mo +GST (annual) AUD Not published
Medical scribes Heidi Health 22/25 4/5 Free; A$85/mo (annual) AUD Partly: core data yes, some optional features no
Law firms Smokeball 22/25 5/5 A$59 per user/mo +GST (no AI); AI add-ons need Boost, A$129 AUD No Australia-only option (AWS, several regions)
Records and compliance Castlepoint 21/25 5/5 Quote only Not published Yes
Property managers PropertyMe 22/25 5/5 A$149/mo per 100 properties inc. GST AUD Partly: yes, but email runs through a US provider
Development feasibility Archistar 22/25 5/5 Free; Basic A$95/mo inc. GST AUD Yes
Accommodation SiteMinder 22/25 5/5 A$135/mo +GST AUD Not published
Senior school study Atomi 21/25 4/5 A$470/yr (7 subjects) or A$59.99/mo AUD No
Farming AgriWebb 21/25 5/5 Priced by herd size (calculator on its site) AUD Yes
Personal finance WeMoney 21/25 5/5 Free; Pro A$9.99/mo AUD Not published
Accounting practices XBert 19/25 5/5 A$29 per user/mo ex-GST (annual) AUD Yes
Image generation Leonardo AI 21/25 4/5 Free; US$12/mo on the web (~A$16.80 ex-GST) USD on the web, AUD in the app No
AI agents Relevance AI 20/25 4/5 US$19/mo annual (~A$27 ex-GST) USD Yes, if you choose the Australian region at signup
Bot defence Kasada 19/25 4/5 Quote only Not published Not published

Converted figures use 1 USD ≈ A$1.40, our current basis. GST-registered businesses quoting an ABN are not charged GST on imported digital services; other buyers add about 10%.

The finding: Australian-built is not Australian data

We sorted all 48 tools into three buckets for hosting and three for billing. We counted only what each vendor publishes, as recorded in our review. A vendor that says nothing is counted as "not published", never as offshore. Where our review notes a hosting claim the vendor has not confirmed in writing (Humanforce, Zeller), we count it as not published.

Where your data is hosted

Bucket Tools What it means
Australian hosting published 20 The vendor states Australian customer data is stored in Australia, or offers an Australian region you can choose. Some send part of the processing offshore (below).
Offshore by default, or no Australia-only option 8 Atomi, Billroo, Canva, Choppity, Leonardo AI and Isaacus (US by default; Australia only if you self-host). ServiceM8 and Smokeball store data across several countries or AWS regions, Australia included, with no Australia-only option.
Not published 20 The vendor does not say where Australian data lives.

How you are billed

Bucket Tools
AUD price published 25
USD only 7 (Atlassian Rovo, Choppity, Isaacus, Lorikeet, Mixo, NightCafe, Relevance AI)
Not published (quote-only or unstated) 16

Three things stand out.

The biggest names are the least local. Canva is the best-known Australian software company. Its customer-selectable hosting covers only the US and the EU, and only on Enterprise, Campus and District plans. Canva's own Help Centre still said so when we checked on 28 October 2026. Leonardo AI, which Canva owns, has no advertised Australian region either. Atlassian Rovo does offer Australian data residency, but Atlassian re-domiciled to Delaware in 2022 and bills in US dollars.

"Onshore" sometimes stops at storage. Rex Software stores Australian customer data in Australian data centres. Its AI Assist prompts are processed offshore by Anthropic, OpenAI and Google. Stile Education keeps student data in Australia, but says AI-assisted features may run outside it. Heidi Health keeps core consult data onshore, and reserves the right to process some optional features elsewhere. These are fair, published positions. They are not "your data never leaves Australia".

Silence is the most common answer. Twenty tools, including SiteMinder and Deputy, publish no hosting location at all. Several probably host here. But a clinic, a law firm or a council cannot rely on "probably". If it matters to you, ask in writing before you sign.

Medical scribes and health

Three of the AI medical scribes we rate most highly are Australian.

Top pick: Heidi Health, 22/25. Heidi is Melbourne-built and listens to a consult. It then writes the clinical note, referral letters and a patient summary, and files them into Australian clinical software. The free tier is genuinely usable. Clinician costs A$85 a month on annual billing (A$120 monthly); Heidi's page does not state the GST treatment. Core consult data stays in Australia. The catch: a few optional features may be processed offshore, so read the privacy policy if your practice has strict rules.

Lyrebird Health, 21/25. The Melbourne scribe to try alongside Heidi. It integrates with Best Practice, keeps data onshore and starts free. Part-time Pro works out at A$80 a month on annual billing. It publishes no independent security certification such as ISO 27001.

Coviu, 21/25. A CSIRO Data61 spinout, and the most credentialled Australian telehealth platform: AWS Sydney hosting, ISO 27001 and an integrated AI scribe. It is provider infrastructure, so there's no patient booking and no Medicare billing.

Harrison.ai, formerly Annalise.ai, 20/25. TGA-cleared radiology AI that flags findings on chest X-rays and CT scans. It is for hospitals and radiology networks, not GPs. Annalise.ai now redirects to harrison.ai, and the products carry the Harrison.ai name; our review's October edition records the rename. The review also records the 2024 I-MED data-consent matter, which the OAIC closed in 2025.

Law, compliance and records

These tools don't replace qualified professional advice.

Top pick for law firms: Smokeball, 22/25. Practice management from Sydney. The entry Bill plan, A$59 per user a month plus GST, has no AI. Archie AI and AutoTime are paid add-ons, so Boost at A$129 per user a month plus GST is the realistic entry. Contracts run 36 months. Data sits on AWS across several regions, with no Australia-only commitment.

Top pick for records and compliance: Castlepoint, 21/25. A Canberra company founded in 2012. It classifies and governs records across an organisation's systems without moving them. It is for government and regulated organisations. Pricing is quote-only and there is no self-serve trial.

For small businesses without a lawyer: Lawpath, 21/25. Contracts, company registration and legal admin from A$45 a month on an annual plan, with data in Australia. Access to a real lawyer sits on the A$155 and A$175 tiers.

Also worth knowing: Immediation (20/25), an online dispute resolution platform for mediators and arbitrators. Josef (19/25) builds no-code legal tools for in-house teams. Checkbox (18/25) triages business requests for corporate legal teams. Isaacus (17/25) sells legal-specialist models to developers. Its default cloud runs in the US; Australian processing needs a self-hosted deployment.

HR, payroll and rostering

Our largest group of Australian-built tools. The payroll and rostering tools here are built around Modern Awards. These tools don't replace qualified professional advice.

Top pick for people analytics: Culture Amp, 23/25. The highest-scoring Australian-built tool we have reviewed. Engagement surveys, performance reviews and AI summaries of open-text comments, benchmarked against Culture Amp's own survey data. Australian hosting is available, but you opt in when you contract. Pricing is quote-only, and it is poor value under about 50 staff.

Top pick for SME HR and payroll: Employment Hero, 22/25. Fair Work-aware HR and payroll from Sydney, from A$10 per employee a month with a ten-user minimum. Human HR advisory is available. Its Help Centre says data is stored in Australia on AWS.

Top pick for rostering: Deputy, 21/25. AI rostering for shift businesses, from A$6.75 per user a month plus GST on annual billing (A$7.50 monthly). Payroll and HR add-ons lift the real price. Deputy does not publish where Australian data is hosted.

Also strong: Tanda (20/25) has the most thorough award interpretation, with a thin AI layer. Humanforce (19/25) is the enterprise workforce option and now includes the former intelliHR. Sapia.ai (19/25) runs AI interviews for volume hiring. Roubler (17/25) has a genuine AI roster but publishes no pricing.

Property

PropertyMe and Archistar tie on 22/25 and 5/5 for Australian Fit. They serve different buyers, so each is the pick for its own.

Top pick for property managers: PropertyMe, 22/25. The clear choice for Australian property managers. AiMe drafts tenant messages, AiMe Comply answers state-specific compliance questions, and Bills AI reads invoices. The AI features need the Advanced plan, A$215 a month per 100 properties including GST. Data is stored in Australia; email runs through a US provider.

Top pick for developers and architects: Archistar, 22/25. Sydney-built development feasibility against Australian planning rules. There is a free tier; Basic is A$95 a month including GST. Its outputs still need professional sign-off.

Microburbs, 19/25. The most data-dense suburb research tool in the country, from A$77 a month. It publishes no server location, which holds its Australian Fit to 3/5.

Rex Software, 20/25. A Brisbane real estate CRM whose AI Assist turns a voice debrief into notes, contact updates and follow-ups. Pricing is quote-only.

Accommodation

Top pick: SiteMinder, 22/25. Sydney-built, ASX-listed and first to put Australian hotels into AI booking channels. From A$135 a month plus GST for a five-room property. Larger properties get a quote.

Little Hotelier, 21/25. SiteMinder's all-in-one for B&Bs and motels under about 20 rooms, from A$49 a month. The cheapest tier adds a 1% booking fee.

Money and accounting

These tools don't replace qualified professional advice.

Top pick for households: WeMoney, 21/25. The best Australian app for improving your credit score, with the most genuine AI coach in personal finance. Free, or A$9.99 a month for Pro. It is credit-first rather than a budgeting app, and the region of its AI processing is not published.

Top pick for accounting practices: XBert, 19/25. Continuous ledger checks for bookkeepers and accountants, with data in Australia. A$29 per user a month ex-GST on annual billing, plus a per-client data charge. It flags errors; it doesn't fix them.

Also reviewed: Tyro Accounting (19/25), formerly Thriday, an admin autopilot for sole traders. Zeller (18/25), Melbourne payments and business banking with a young AI assistant. ServiceM8 (19/25), job management for tradies on iPhone. There is a free plan; Starter is A$29 a month including GST. Its AI quoting needs about 100 completed jobs first.

Education

Top pick: Atomi, 21/25. The first choice for Year 11 and 12 students preparing for HSC, VCE, QCE, WACE, SACE or TQA exams. A$470 a year for up to seven subjects, or A$59.99 a month for up to 13. The catch for schools: Atomi says it processes personal information on servers in many countries, with no Australian commitment.

Stile Education, 20/25. Secondary science with Australian Curriculum mapping and AI-assisted marking. Melbourne-founded, now owned by the US nonprofit Curriculum Associates. Student data is stored in Australia.

Cluey, 18/25. Human online tutoring with AI working behind the scenes. Per-session prices are not published.

Farming

Top pick: AgriWebb, 21/25. The livestock platform most Australian graziers should trial first. Plans are priced by herd size, and AgriWebb's calculator now shows the price up front. Grazing Planning is a A$300-a-year add-on on Performance plans. Data is hosted in Australia. Treat the AI forecasting as upside still to come: its headline AI is in beta.

Creative tools

Leonardo AI and NightCafe tie on 21/25. NightCafe scores higher for Australian Fit (5/5 against 4/5) and keeps personal information in Australia. Leonardo is our pick because it does more: it trains its own image and video models and is built for designers and marketers. If where your data sits matters more than features, choose NightCafe.

Top pick: Leonardo AI, 21/25. A serious image and video generator, built in Sydney and owned by Canva. Subscribe on the web: Essential is US$12 a month there (about A$16.80 ex-GST), against A$24.99 in the app. There is no Australian data region.

Pick if data location matters: NightCafe, 21/25. A Queensland company that puts many image models in one credits-based account. Personal information is stored in Australia, though payment and analytics providers may hold data elsewhere. Credits are priced in US dollars.

Canva Magic Studio, 19/25. The easiest AI design recommendation for a small business, at A$20 a month for Pro. No Australian hosting on any plan.

Also reviewed: Relume (18/25) is a Sydney accelerator for Webflow and Figma designers, billed in USD. Mixo (17/25) builds a launch page fast, but it is not a business website. Mixo scores 3/5 for Australian Fit, so we cannot name it a pick.

AI agents, assistants and automation

Top pick: Relevance AI, 20/25. The strongest Australian-built platform for building AI agents that handle repeatable, high-volume work. You can choose an Australian data region at signup. Pro is US$19 a month on annual billing (about A$27 ex-GST). The free plan is retired and usage can be hard to predict.

Lorikeet, 20/25. AI customer support for fintech and health support teams. Pricing is mid-market and in US dollars, so it is overkill for a small business. It publishes no Australian hosting position.

Atlassian Rovo, 18/25. The most credible workspace AI for teams already on Jira and Confluence. Atlassian was founded in Sydney, keeps headquarters in Sydney and San Francisco, and is now incorporated in the US.

Tactiq, 18/25. A Sydney-founded meeting transcriber that needs no bot in the call. Free for 10 transcripts a month; paid plans from A$11.42 per user a month.

AgentAus, 17/25. A Canberra-made assistant aimed at sensitive and regulated data, hosted in Australia. Its underlying model is not disclosed, and paid pricing is on request.

Security

Kasada is the only Australian-built security tool on our list that passes the AI test, so it is the pick by default.

Top pick: Kasada, 19/25. Sydney-founded bot defence for mid-market and enterprise digital businesses. Enterprise pricing puts it out of reach for most small businesses.

Trans-Tasman, not Australian

Three tools Australians often assume are local come from New Zealand. We review them, but they are not in the 48:

  • Xero (21/25) is headquartered in Wellington.
  • Hnry (24/25) was founded in Wellington and works on both sides of the Tasman.
  • Halter (20/25) was built in Auckland.

How we chose

A tool is in this round-up if all four hold:

  1. Founded or headquartered in Australia. We say so where a company has since moved its headquarters or been bought from overseas: Atlassian, Haast and Stile Education.
  2. It ships a real AI feature. Our test: the review describes machine learning or generative AI doing real work in the product, not rules-based automation sold as AI. Eleven Australian-built tools we review fail it and are left out: Airlock Digital, AgriDigital, Cynch Security, FarmBot, Frollo, Pairtree, Parpera, Phriendly Phishing, Realtair, Spriggy and TradieBot. intelliHR is now part of Humanforce, so we count them once.
  3. Its full review is live, scored out of 25 on our methodology.
  4. The Australian Fit gate: a category pick needs at least 4/5 for Australian Fit.

The hosting and billing buckets come from each tool's review, read on 28 October 2026. Before publishing, we re-checked the live pricing pages of 12 tools whose reviews date from June to September. No headline price had moved. One product had changed its name: Annalise.ai now trades as Harrison.ai. Three showed small changes our reviews will pick up in their next editions: Deputy's A$6.75 is the annual-billing rate (A$7.50 monthly), WeMoney no longer shows its annual price, and AgriWebb no longer prices some add-ons separately.

Also reviewed: under 17/25

These tools are Australian-built and reviewed, but we don't recommend them for most readers today.

Tool Score Why it falls short
Billroo 16/25 A good budgeting app, but financial data is hosted in the US and the AI is a capped add-on
Choppity 16/25 Fair-value video clipping, but billed in USD with footage stored in the UK and US
Haast 14/25 An enterprise compliance engine, now New York-headquartered, with no public pricing
Maincode (Matilda) 14/25 An Australian-trained model on Melbourne GPUs; unpriced, and our review is due a refresh after its July open beta

FAQ

Which AI tools are Australian-founded? We have reviewed 48 AI tools founded or headquartered in Australia, listed in full above. The highest-scoring is Culture Amp (23/25), then Archistar, Employment Hero, Heidi Health, PropertyMe, SiteMinder and Smokeball (22/25 each). Xero, Hnry and Halter are from New Zealand.

Do Australian AI tools keep data in Australia? Not reliably. Of the 48, 20 publish Australian hosting, 8 host offshore by default or offer no Australia-only option, and 20 do not say. Canva and Leonardo AI have no Australian region. Some tools store data here but process AI requests offshore, so ask about both.

Which AI medical scribes are Australian-built? Heidi Health (22/25) and Lyrebird Health (21/25), both from Melbourne, plus the AI scribe inside Coviu's telehealth platform (21/25). All three keep core patient data in Australia, and Heidi and Lyrebird both have free tiers.

Do Australian-built AI tools charge in Australian dollars? Most do. 25 of the 48 publish an AUD price. Seven bill only in US dollars, including Relevance AI, Lorikeet and Atlassian Rovo. The other 16 are quote-only or don't say.

Which Australian-built AI tool is best for a small business? It depends on the job. For HR and payroll, Employment Hero, which stores data in Australia. For rostering, Deputy. For tradies, ServiceM8. For design, Canva. All four bill in AUD, but Deputy does not publish where data is hosted, and ServiceM8 and Canva offer no Australia-only hosting.
