The gate: Australian Fit 4/5 clears it, so five stars are permitted.

Verdict (TL;DR): Employment Hero is the strongest local-fit HR and payroll pick for Australian SMEs — built and headquartered in Sydney, priced in AUD, and genuinely Fair Work and modern-award aware, with human HR advisory and AI-assisted recruitment included across plans. It scores 22/25. The catch: an explicit primary data-residency guarantee couldn't be verified, top tiers are quote-only, and per-employee minimums add up for micro teams. Treat its award calculations and AI HR answers as decision-support, not legal authority — Employment Hero does not replace qualified legal, HR or financial advice.

If you run a small or mid-sized Australian business and you've spent any time looking at HR software, you'll have run into Employment Hero. It is one of the few platforms in this category that was built here, is headquartered here, and prices itself in dollars you actually invoice in. For a 35-year-old Melbourne business owner juggling payroll, leave, onboarding and the nagging worry that you've classified someone against the wrong modern award, that local pedigree matters more than any feature list.

So does it deliver? Mostly, yes — and where it falls short, the gaps are about transparency and verification rather than capability. Here's our independent take.

What it is and who owns it

Employment Hero is a cloud HR, payroll and employment-management platform aimed squarely at Australian SMEs. It's operated by Employment Hero Pty Ltd, an Australian company headquartered in Sydney, NSW. This is its home market — not an offshore product that bolted on an AUD price list later.

The platform covers the full employment lifecycle: core HR (employee records, onboarding and offboarding, leave, document and policy management), payroll, time and attendance, rostering, performance, learning, and recruitment. Employees interact through the Swag app for self-service — payslips, leave requests, personal details. Layered on top are AI features: SmartMatch candidate-to-role matching, an AI recruitment agent that screens and shortlists, and "Hero AI for HR", an assistant that answers common HR questions and suggests next actions. There's also a human HR advisory service and Fair Work-aware award interpretation built in.

In short, it's trying to be the single tool an SME uses instead of stitching together five. For many businesses, that's exactly the appeal.

Pricing in AUD (and the GST question)

Employment Hero prices per employee, per month, in Australian dollars. The published tiers are:

  • HR Essentials — AUD $10 per employee/month, with a $100/month minimum
  • HR Engage — AUD $14 per employee/month, with a $140/month minimum
  • HR Elite — custom pricing (contact sales)
  • Employment Unlimited — custom pricing; bundles HR, payroll and benefits

There is no free-forever tier on the current pricing page — entry is HR Essentials at $10/employee/month with a $100/month minimum. (Employment Hero historically marketed "free HR"; that positioning is gone from the live pricing.)

On GST: Employment Hero's terms state fees are GST-exclusive (clause 13.5), so budget the extra 10% on top of the headline rate.

Two practical notes. First, the monthly minimums ($100 and $140) mean very small teams pay a floor regardless of headcount — a five-person shop on HR Essentials still pays the $100 minimum, effectively $20 per head, not $10. Second, some older sources cite different per-employee plans (around $20/$40/$60), so confirm the live quote before you commit. There's also a reported $0.30 per employee per batch fee for legacy integrated super (Beam) processing from 1 April 2026.

The headline pricing is genuinely competitive for what's included. The asterisks are the minimums, the ex-GST uplift, and the fact that the richest tiers are quote-only — which makes it hard to budget for a larger or more feature-hungry rollout without a sales conversation.

Ease of use

Employment Hero is well regarded for its employee-facing experience. The Swag app gives staff self-service for the everyday stuff — payslips, leave, details — which takes load off whoever runs HR. Onboarding is guided, and for a platform of this breadth that guidance matters.

The trade-off is the breadth itself. When a product spans HR, payroll, rostering, learning and recruitment, the initial setup carries real overhead — configuring awards, mapping pay rules, loading policies and getting modules talking to each other. A micro business will get going quickly; a 50-person operation moving off spreadsheets and a separate payroll bureau should budget proper implementation time. It's not a five-minute setup, and you shouldn't expect it to be.

Features

This is where Employment Hero is strongest, and it's why we've scored Feature Depth a full 5/5. Few competitors in the Australian SME bracket match the spread: HR, payroll, time and attendance, rostering, performance, learning, recruitment, and an employee benefits app, all under one roof. For an owner trying to cut tool sprawl, that consolidation is the headline benefit.

The AI layer is more than a sticker. SmartMatch ranks candidates against a role, the AI recruitment agent handles screening and shortlisting, and Hero AI for HR fields common HR questions and nudges next actions. Crucially, these features are positioned across plans rather than locked behind the top tier — a refreshing change from the usual "AI is enterprise-only" playbook.

A fair caveat: AI recruitment matching can carry bias and shouldn't be treated as a hiring decision-maker, and the HR assistant — like any such tool — can be confidently wrong. Use both as accelerants, with a human making the call.

Australian fit: the moat (AU-law awareness and data residency)

This is the criterion that decides the category, and it's where Employment Hero genuinely separates itself. We've scored it 5/5.

On AU employment-law awareness, this is the real thing, not a marketing veneer. The vendor's product page states it provides "Fair Work compliant modern award calculations" and "award interpretation", backed by human HR advisory support and employment-claims representation. For an owner whose biggest compliance fear is underpayment or misclassification under the Fair Work Act and the modern award system, that orientation is the entire point. It's built for Australian employment law, not adapted to it.

That said — and this is a red line we will not skip — accuracy is not independently verified here. Award interpretation engines can mis-classify, and AI HR answers can be wrong. Treat every award calculation and AI suggestion as decision-support, not gospel. Employment Hero does not replace qualified legal, HR or financial advice. Before you rely on its outputs for pay rates, terminations, redundancies or contract decisions, have a qualified HR or employment-law professional check them. The platform reduces your risk; it does not absorb your liability.

On data residency, the picture is solid but not fully nailed down. The platform is hosted on AWS and is ISO 27001:2013 certified (confirmed on the vendor's product page), with ISO 27017 (cloud security) and ISO 27018 (PII in cloud) certifications reported by secondary sources. Bank-grade encryption is claimed. AWS operates an Asia Pacific (Sydney) region capable of keeping data onshore. Employment Hero's Help Centre does state that customer data is stored on protected servers in Australia (on AWS) — a primary statement we were able to confirm. What we could not verify is the formal certification picture: the live Trust Centre is a JavaScript portal we could not machine-read, and SOC 2 Type II and IRAP status are not confirmed against a primary Employment Hero source. If data sovereignty is a hard requirement for you, confirm the storage region directly via the Trust Centre or the Data Processing Agreement before you sign — don't assume it.

On the rest: AUD pricing, ABN tax invoicing, a strong local support presence, and an Australian operating entity. On the dimensions that define Australian Fit — AU-law awareness, AUD/ABN billing, and local support — Employment Hero is about as good as it gets in this category. The only thing holding it back from a perfect score is that one unconfirmed residency statement — and the category context (ISO 27001, AWS, AU entity) keeps that from dragging the score down.

Limitations

A balanced read needs the downsides on the table:

  • Data residency: confirmed onshore. Employment Hero's Help Centre states data is stored on protected servers in Australia (on AWS). The polished Trust Centre is a JavaScript portal, but the onshore-hosting statement sits on a primary Help Centre page.
  • Top tiers are quote-only. HR Elite and Employment Unlimited have no transparent pricing, which complicates budgeting for larger or feature-rich needs.
  • Per-employee billing with monthly minimums ($100 / $140) can sting very small teams, and ex-GST adds 10%.
  • No free-forever HR tier on the current pricing page; entry is $10/employee/month with a $100/month minimum.
  • AI and award-interpretation accuracy is not independently verified. It's decision-support, not a substitute for qualified advice.
  • It's an HR/payroll platform, not a legal tool. If you want contract drafting or AU contract-law work, this isn't the fit — its strength is HR and employment compliance, not legal document production.

How it scores

Criterion Score Why
Value for Money 4/5 AUD-native pricing with HR advisory and AI recruitment across plans; budget for GST, minimums and quote-only top tiers
Ease of Use 4/5 An easy shortlist entry for compliance-conscious owners, but spanning HR/payroll/rostering means real setup overhead
Feature Depth 5/5 A broad suite — HR, payroll, rostering, learning and recruitment in one platform
Australian Fit 4/5 Sydney-built and headquartered, AUD-priced, genuinely Fair Work and modern-award aware; an explicit residency guarantee couldn't be confirmed
Reliability & Support 5/5 ISO 27001/27017/27018 on AWS, an AU entity and human HR advisory — only the unconfirmed residency holds it short of perfect
Total 22/25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent

Verdict

Employment Hero earns 22/25 and a clear recommendation for the right buyer. If you're an Australian SME — roughly 5 to 150 staff — wanting one AUD-priced platform that handles HR and payroll, understands Fair Work and modern awards, gives you human HR advisory backup, and throws in genuinely useful AI recruitment, this is the strongest local-fit pick we've assessed. The home-market advantage is real and hard for offshore competitors to replicate.

The honest caveats: budget past the headline rate for GST and minimums, get a real quote if you'll need the upper tiers, and — if data sovereignty matters — verify the storage region with the vendor before you rely on it. And keep the right mental model: Employment Hero is excellent decision-support that does not replace qualified legal, HR or financial advice. Its award calculations and AI answers should be checked by a qualified professional before you act on pay, termination or contract decisions. Use it to do the heavy lifting and reduce your compliance risk — then let a human make the final call. On that basis, it's an easy shortlist entry for compliance-conscious Australian owners.

Update history
  • 2 Sep 2026 — Pricing re-verified against the live AU pricing page: unchanged. HR Essentials AUD $10/employee/month and HR Engage AUD $14/employee/month, HR Elite and Employment Unlimited quote-only, no free HR tier. The vendor expresses the floor as a 10-user minimum ("billing is based on the higher of the two"), which equals the $100/$140 monthly minimums stated here. Source

Frequently asked questions

Is Employment Hero available in Australia?

Yes — this is its home market. Employment Hero Pty Ltd is built and headquartered in Sydney, with a strong local support presence and an Australian operating entity. It's genuinely Fair Work and modern-award aware, not an offshore product with an AUD price bolted on.

Does Employment Hero charge in AUD?

Yes. Pricing is per employee, per month, in Australian dollars — HR Essentials at $10/employee/month ($100/month minimum), HR Engage at $14 ($140 minimum), with HR Elite and Employment Unlimited quote-only. Fees are GST-exclusive (clause 13.5), so budget the extra 10%.

Is there a free plan?

No. There's no free-forever tier on the current pricing page — entry is HR Essentials at $10/employee/month with a $100/month minimum. (Employment Hero historically marketed "free HR"; that positioning is gone from the live pricing.)

Is my data stored in Australia?

Yes, per its Help Centre — data is stored on protected AWS servers in Australia, and the platform is ISO 27001 certified. The fuller certification picture (SOC 2 Type II, IRAP) couldn't be confirmed from a primary source, so if data sovereignty is a hard requirement, verify via the Trust Centre or DPA before signing.

Can I rely on its award calculations?

Treat them as decision-support, not legal authority. The award interpretation and AI HR answers are genuinely Fair Work-oriented, but accuracy isn't independently verified — Employment Hero does not replace qualified legal, HR or financial advice. Have a professional check pay, termination and contract decisions.
