Lyrebird Health Review Australia 2026: The Melbourne-Built AI Scribe That Keeps Patient Data Onshore
- From
- A$80/mo per user · inc. GST · billed in AUD
The gate: Australian Fit 5/5 clears it, so five stars are permitted.
Skip to the verdictVerdict (TL;DR): Lyrebird Health is the AI medical scribe we would put in front of an Australian GP first. It is built in Melbourne, stores patient data onshore, runs natively inside Best Practice, and starts free. The score is held back only by the lack of a published independent security certification and thin public detail on support. For most Australian clinicians, it is the strongest local fit on the market.

What Lyrebird Health is
Lyrebird Health is an AI medical scribe. It listens to a consultation in the background, converts the conversation to text in real time, and drafts a clinical note in the clinician's own style. It also writes referrals, certificates, and care plans, and has a dictation mode for custom documents.
This is the first review in our new Healthcare & Medical AI category. The category covers ambient clinical documentation tools — software that drafts the note so the doctor can look at the patient instead of the keyboard.
Lyrebird was founded in early 2023 by Kai Van Lieshout and Linus Talacko, and is based in Melbourne. In mid-2025 it raised a A$12 million round led by Five V Capital and Octopus Ventures, with Startmate participating. The company says its platform is now used on around 30,000 consultations a day in Australia; its own announcement puts the figure at "over 28,000 patient consults a day". Reported clients include the Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service, which logged a 22% lift in patient throughput across its outpatient clinics after rolling Lyrebird out. The company is also expanding into the UK and a Dubai hospital partnership.
The headline pitch is plain: less paperwork, more time with the patient. The interesting part for Australians is where the data lives.
What it costs in Australia
Lyrebird publishes Australian pricing in AUD, and the figures below are taken from its own pricing page and help centre.
| Plan | Price (AUD) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Lyrebird Lite (Free) | $0 | 50 actions/month, no EMR integrations |
| Pro — Full-time (annual) | $160/user/month, billed $1,920/year | Unlimited actions; integrations included |
| Pro — Full-time (monthly) | $240/user/month | Rolling monthly |
| Pro — Part-time (annual) | $80/user/month, billed $960/year | Part-time discount, up to 50%, applied in-app at checkout |
| Teams | Custom | Multi-clinician practice discounts, scale by size |
GST: Prices are shown excluding GST. AUD prices shown ex GST attract 10% GST for Australian customers, so budget roughly $176/month for a full-time annual Pro seat including GST. A registered practice can generally claim that GST back.
Free tier and trial: There is a genuine free tier (Lyrebird Lite, 50 actions a month, no integrations) and a 14-day free trial of Pro.
Discounts: Part-time clinicians get up to 50% off, calculated in-app at checkout. Registrars are offered an 80% discount on Pro for the duration of their employment as a registrar. The registrar deal is unusually generous and worth flagging to anyone supervising trainees.
One pricing note: Lyrebird's main pricing page currently shows Pro at $200/month (annual) and $300/month (monthly), while its help-centre pricing article lists the Australian figures as $1,920/year (the equivalent of $160/month) and $240/month. We have used the help-centre AU figures above; confirm the exact price in-app at checkout before you commit.

How it works in practice
The workflow is short, which is the point.
- Open Lyrebird in the browser or the mobile app. No install is needed; it is web-based.
- Get the patient's consent to record, then start the session. The tool transcribes in real time on Australian servers and stores no audio.
- Consult as normal. Lyrebird listens in the background and is built to handle varied accents and multilingual consultations.
- End the session and a structured note appears, drafted in your style. Letters, referrals, and care plans can be generated from the same context.
- Review, edit, and push the note into the record. For Best Practice users it runs natively inside the software with patient context pre-loaded.
On time saved, the company points to throughput rather than per-note seconds: the Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service reported a 22% lift in patient throughput after rolling Lyrebird out across its outpatient clinics. Treat that as a vendor-supplied figure from one large client, not a guaranteed result for a two-doctor suburban practice. The realistic promise is finishing the note before the next patient sits down, instead of at 7pm.
The tool also learns from your edits, so the drafts should drift toward your phrasing over the first few weeks.
What it does well
- Onshore data, stated plainly. Patient data is processed and stored in Australia on AWS infrastructure, with real-time transcription on Sydney servers and no audio retained. For a clinical tool, this is the headline strength.
- Native Best Practice integration. It runs inside Best Practice with patient context pre-loaded and no extra cost on Pro. Best Practice is one of the most common GP systems in Australia, so this matters.
- Fast to start. Web-based, no install, "consult-ready in minutes" with no training. A non-technical clinician can be running in a single session.
- Real free tier and a registrar discount. Most rivals gate everything behind a paid plan. Lyrebird offers a free Lite tier and an 80% registrar discount.
- Documents beyond the note. Referrals, certificates, and care plans come from the same consult context, not a separate tool.
What it doesn't do well
- No published independent security certification. Lyrebird says it is approved by Medical Defence Organisations and is compliant with the Privacy Act 1988. But none of its three public privacy and security pages claims a current ISO 27001 or SOC 2 certification. As of 7 June 2026, there is no completed independent certification published. For hospital procurement, that gap can be a blocker.
- No native MedicalDirector, Cliniko, or Halaxy. Lyrebird's integrations page lists native links to Best Practice (Bp Premier), Gentu, Meditech, Cubiko, and Oracle Health (Cerner), with Genie marked "coming soon" and support for the FHIR and HL7 standards for everything else. MedicalDirector, Cliniko, and Halaxy are not listed as native integrations. Allied health practices on Cliniko or Halaxy should confirm the FHIR/HL7 route works for them before committing.
- Throughput claims come from one large client. The 22% Gold Coast figure is real reporting but from a single big health service; smaller practices should not assume the same lift.
- Pricing is per-user and not trivial. At $160/user/month annually (ex GST) for a full-time GP, a multi-GP clinic adds up quickly. The free Lite tier is capped at 50 actions, which a full-time clinician will exhaust in days.
- Support is chat and email, with no published SLA. Lyrebird offers a live-chat widget on its Help Centre "during business hours" and email at support@lyrebirdhealth.com. It publishes no response-time SLA and no dedicated AU phone line. A dedicated account manager comes only with the custom Teams plan.
Australian fit
This is where Lyrebird earns its score.
Data residency. All sensitive health information is processed and retained onshore in Australia: transcription runs in real time on the company's Sydney servers and language-model processing also sits in Sydney, with no audio stored. Sensitive information is not transferred offshore. Notes are kept for seven days by default, adjustable down to 24 hours or up to 28 days.
Privacy Act and APP. Lyrebird states full compliance with the Australian Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles, specifically referencing APP 3. It also states it does not use patient data to train AI.
My Health Record and Medicare/MBS. Lyrebird drafts the clinical note and supporting documents; it does not replace My Health Record uploads or MBS billing workflows, which remain in the clinician's practice software. Lyrebird's pages make no claim of direct My Health Record integration, so treat uploads as a separate step in your practice software.
AU clinical software. Native integrations include Best Practice (Bp Premier), Gentu, Meditech, Cubiko, and Oracle Health (Cerner), with Genie marked "coming soon" and FHIR and HL7 support for other systems. Best Practice is one of the most widely used GP systems in Australia, so a native link there is a meaningful local signal.
AUD, GST, support. Pricing is in AUD and shown ex GST; as AUD figures shown ex GST, they attract 10% GST for Australian customers, which a registered practice can generally claim back. The company is Melbourne-based, so support sits in Australian time zones, but it is delivered by business-hours live chat and email with no published SLA.
AHPRA and RACGP. Using an AI scribe does not change a clinician's professional obligations. Under AHPRA guidance, the treating clinician remains responsible for the accuracy of the medical record, and patient consent to recording is required. Lyrebird builds consent into the workflow, but the doctor must still read and correct every draft.
The caveat that matters. Lyrebird does not replace clinical judgement. It drafts; the treating clinician remains responsible for the medical record, the diagnosis, and the care. An AI draft is a starting point, never the final word.
Australian Fit score: 5/5.
Alternatives
- Heidi Health — the other major Australian-built ambient scribe and Lyrebird's closest local rival. Worth comparing head-to-head on integrations and pricing. (See our forthcoming Heidi Health review.)
- Microsoft Dragon Copilot — the enterprise option, strong for large health services already inside the Microsoft stack, heavier to deploy. (See our forthcoming Dragon Copilot review.)
- Nabla — a well-funded global scribe with a clinical focus; check Australian data residency carefully before adopting. (See our forthcoming Nabla review.)
For most Australian GPs and small practices, the real contest is Lyrebird versus Heidi. We will run that comparison directly.
Bottom line
If you are an Australian GP and you want one AI scribe to try first, make it Lyrebird. It keeps data onshore, it is built here, it runs inside Best Practice, and you can start free and add a registrar for almost nothing. The honest caveats are the missing published security certification and the thin support detail — both matter most for hospital procurement, less for a suburban practice. For everyday Australian clinical work, it is the strongest local fit we have reviewed, and it earns its five stars.
