The weak point.

The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.

The verdict: ServiceM8 is an Australian-made job manager built for trades — electricians, plumbers, HVAC, cleaners. Its AI genuinely earns its place: Auto-Quote and Auto-Invoice draft real documents from your job cards in seconds. The catch is they need roughly 100 completed jobs before they're any good, so new accounts wait for the payoff. Pricing is honest — AUD, GST inclusive, with a usable free plan. If you run a small AU trade business on an iPhone, it's an easy shortlist. Score: 19/25 — Very Good.

ServiceM8 has been a fixture in Australian trade businesses for years. It handles the unglamorous middle of a job: scheduling, quoting, on-site photos and notes, digital signatures, online bookings, and invoicing. What's new — and what brings it into our Business, CRM & Sales AI category — is that the AI is no longer a bolt-on. It now drafts your quotes, writes your invoices, suggests scheduling, and even answers your phone. For a busy sparky or plumber doing the books at 9pm, that's the part worth paying attention to. This review looks at whether the AI does real work, what it costs an Australian business in AUD, and where ServiceM8 falls short.

What it does well

The AI does actual paperwork, not party tricks. Auto-Quote reads the job card — descriptions, notes, checklists, items added, time tracked, transcribed videos, and email and SMS correspondence — plus your past jobs, and drafts a professional quote in seconds. Auto-Invoice pulls completed work and billable items off the card and drafts the invoice (Source). The vendor states 30% of Auto-Invoice drafts are accepted as-is (Source). That's a specific, believable number: roughly one invoice in three needs no edits. For a tradie who hates billing, that's hours back each month.

The AI Writing Assistant cleans up your words. It drafts and refines emails, texts, and quote or invoice descriptions — lengthen, shorten, fix grammar and clarity. Useful when you're typing on a phone between jobs.

It goes further than most. There are AI email reply suggestions, AI invoice item suggestions, AI scheduling suggestions, AI report generation (the "Smart Report Helper"), and a voice-activated assistant (ServiceM8 Chat) you can talk to. An AI Phone Receptionist can answer business calls — handy for a one-person operation that can't pick up while on the tools (Source).

The core job management is mature. Online booking, electronic signatures, on-site photo/video/note capture, card payments including Tap to Pay on iPhone (available in Australia), and accounting integration with Xero, QuickBooks Online and MYOB (Source). The MYOB and Xero links matter here — they're the accounting tools Australian trades actually use.

Watch out for

The headline AI needs history before it's useful. As a general rule, the vendor says you'll need at least 100 completed jobs in the account before Auto-Quote and Auto-Invoice generate reasonable results (Source). A brand-new business gets little value from the very features ServiceM8 leads with. Plan to use it as a job manager first and let the AI earn its keep later.

The AI is reactive, not creative. It only works from what's already on the job card and similar past jobs. It can't invent detail you didn't capture, and the vendor confirms Auto-Quote and Auto-Invoice cannot add Bundles to generated quotes or invoices (Source). Garbage in, garbage out — if your job cards are thin, your drafts will be too.

It's an iPhone product. The full mobile experience is iPhone and iPad. Android users get a cut-down "ServiceM8 Lite" app for basic field work only. If your crew is on Android, this is a real limitation, not a footnote.

Data isn't stored Australia-only. ServiceM8 states it stores data in multiple locations around the world, including the United States, Australia, Ireland, Singapore and Tokyo, on AWS, and that "ServiceM8 in Australia administers data access and service delivery" (Source). Australia is one of the locations, but the vendor publishes no guaranteed Australian-only data residency and no customer-selectable AU-only storage option. For most trades that's fine; if you handle sensitive client data and need local residency, ask before you commit.

No published security certifications. The vendor's security page lists general controls — SSL encryption issued by Amazon, five-minutely backups, and a 99.99% uptime claim — but does not list formal certifications such as ISO 27001 or SOC 2 (Source). That's worth knowing if compliance sign-off matters to your clients.

Pricing

All plans are quoted in AUD on ServiceM8's Australian pricing page, and prices are GST inclusive — no need to add 10% on top (Source).

Plan Price (AUD, inc. GST) Jobs/month AI uses
Free A$0/month 30 jobs, 1 user 10 AI uses/day
Starter A$29/month 50 jobs, unlimited users Unlimited
Growing A$79/month 150 jobs Unlimited
Premium A$149/month 500 jobs Unlimited
Premium Plus A$349/month 1,500+ jobs Unlimited

The free plan is genuinely usable for a side hustle — 30 jobs a month, one user — but it caps AI at 10 uses a day and gives you self-serve support only. Paid plans lift AI to unlimited and add 24/7 support (Source). The pricing scales on job volume, not seats, which suits a growing crew. Included monthly SMS rises with the plan — 100 on Starter, 300 on Growing, 1,000 on Premium and 3,000 on Premium Plus, with extra messages at 10c each (Source). The separate ServiceM8 Phone add-on carries its own monthly fee plus call and usage charges; we found no single consistent figure published across ServiceM8's pages, so check the live pricing page before budgeting for it.

Australian fit

This is where ServiceM8 is strong, and it's the criterion that matters most to us.

  • AUD pricing: Yes. Every plan is quoted in Australian dollars on the AU pricing page (Source).
  • GST: Inclusive. The AU pricing displays GST-inclusive AUD prices — what you see is what you pay (Source).
  • Australian-made: Yes. The vendor's about page describes ServiceM8 as a private Australian company founded in 2009, with the first product released in 2010 (Source). It doesn't change the verdict either way.
  • Support: Self-serve on the free plan, 24/7 support on paid plans per the AU pricing page (Source).
  • Data residency: The weak point. Data is spread across several global regions — the US, Australia, Ireland, Singapore and Tokyo — with Australia among them but not guaranteed as the sole location (Source). For a trades business this is usually acceptable; flag it if your clients demand local-only storage.

On balance, this is one of the better-fitting tools in the category for an Australian trade business — local pricing, local GST handling, local support, local company. The residency gap is the only thing keeping its Australian Fit short of full marks.

ServiceM8 handles invoicing, payments and accounting integrations, so it touches your business finances. It is a tool, not advice — it doesn't replace a qualified accountant or bookkeeper, especially for BAS, GST and tax decisions.

Scoring

Criterion Score Why
Value for Money 4/5 Usable free plan, AUD GST-inclusive tiers, priced on jobs not seats; only docked because the headline AI needs ~100 jobs before it pays off.
Ease of Use 4/5 Built for non-technical tradies and fast to run day-to-day; held back by iOS-centric design and reactive AI.
Feature Depth 4/5 Mature field-service core plus real AI quoting, invoicing, scheduling and a phone receptionist; can't add Bundles to AI drafts and leans on job history.
Australian Fit 4/5 Australian-made, AUD pricing, GST inclusive, AU support; no guaranteed AU-only data residency keeps it off 5.
Reliability & Support 3/5 24/7 paid support and a 99.99% uptime claim, but no published ISO 27001 or SOC 2 certifications and self-serve-only on free.

Frequently asked questions

Is ServiceM8 an Australian company? Yes. The vendor's about page describes ServiceM8 as a private Australian company founded in 2009 (Source), and its security page states ServiceM8 in Australia administers data access and service delivery (Source). Its pricing is in AUD and inclusive of GST.

Does the AI work on day one? Not really. The Writing Assistant and reply suggestions work straight away, but the headline features — Auto-Quote and Auto-Invoice — need at least 100 completed jobs in the account before they produce good drafts (Source). Treat the AI as a payoff you grow into.

Is my data stored in Australia? Partly. ServiceM8 stores data across several locations including Australia, the US, Ireland, Singapore and Tokyo, but its security page describes no guaranteed Australian-only residency or customer-selectable AU-only option (Source). If local-only storage is a hard requirement, ask ServiceM8 directly before signing up.

Can I use ServiceM8 on Android? Only partially. The full experience is on iPhone and iPad. Android gets a cut-down "ServiceM8 Lite" app for basic field work. If your team is Android-first, this is a genuine limitation.

Is the free plan good enough to start? For a sole trader or side hustle, yes — 30 jobs a month, one user, and 10 AI uses a day. You'll outgrow it quickly if you're booking more work or want unlimited AI and 24/7 support, at which point the A$29/month Starter plan is the next step.
