Pricing figures updated 20 September 2026. Anthropic now quotes Australian visitors in Australian dollars, and its pricing page states "Prices include 10% GST". The figures below are the vendor’s own GST-inclusive prices, not our conversions. Enterprise seats and API per-token rates are the exceptions and stay in US dollars (Methodology).

UPDATED — 15 May 2026. Our 9 May 2026 review didn't reflect Anthropic's 10 March 2026 announcement of a Sydney office, the AU Government MOU on AI safety, the named AU enterprise customers, or the fact that Australia is fourth globally on Claude.ai per-capita usage. AU Fit lifts from 3/5 to 4/5 and overall score from 20/25 to 21/25. Pricing structure also refreshed to reflect the current Pro annual/monthly split and the Team Standard/Premium tiers. Original review preserved in archive.

Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant — and the one most likely to surprise you if you've only ever used ChatGPT. It's built with a strong emphasis on nuanced reasoning, careful responses, and handling long, complex documents. Where ChatGPT prioritises breadth and a slick product experience, Claude tends to go deeper. It's particularly strong for reading and analysing lengthy contracts, reports, or research — tasks that trip up most other AI tools. A free tier is available, and paid plans now carry native AUD prices with GST included. As of March 2026, Anthropic has an office in Sydney, a GM for Australia and New Zealand, and an MOU with the Australian Government on AI safety — the strongest local commitment of any pure-play AI assistant.

What it does well

Outstanding with long documents. Claude handles large context windows exceptionally well — paste in an entire contract, annual report, or policy document and it actually reads it properly, rather than summarising the first few pages.

Writes with more nuance than most competitors. The output tends to be less generic and more considered. For professional writing — proposals, reports, client-facing communications — Claude frequently produces stronger first drafts.

Honest about what it doesn't know. Claude is noticeably less prone to confidently stating incorrect information. It will flag uncertainty rather than bluffing through it — a meaningful advantage for any high-stakes task.

Genuine Australian presence. Anthropic opened a Sydney office on 10 March 2026 with a dedicated GM for ANZ (Theo Hourmouzis), signed an MOU with the Australian Government on AI safety in the same announcement, and counts Canva, Commonwealth Bank, and Quantium among its named local customers. Australia sits fourth globally on Claude.ai per-capita usage. That's not data residency — but it's a meaningfully more serious local posture than most of its competitors.

Strong coding and technical reasoning. Claude Opus 5 — the current Opus since 24 July 2026 — consistently ranks at or near the top for software development tasks, and Anthropic positions it as the default for "complex agentic coding and enterprise work" (model overview, checked 10 September 2026). Claude Code is included in Pro and above, which is a real benefit for technical users.

Watch out for

No image generation. Unlike ChatGPT, Claude can't create images. It's a text-first tool — strong for reading and writing, limited for visual content creation.

Smaller third-party ecosystem. ChatGPT has the GPT Store and thousands of integrations. Claude's plugin and connector ecosystem is growing — Google Workspace and Slack integrations have landed — but it's not yet at ChatGPT's scale.

The AUD price is dearer than the USD conversion it replaced. Pro read as roughly A$24 a month on our converted figure. Anthropic’s own AUD price is A$28 on annual billing, because it is GST-inclusive and sits above the spot rate. The guesswork is gone, but the number you pay went up.

Data residency is still US-based on standard plans. Despite the Sydney office, customer data is stored on US infrastructure on consumer Pro/Max plans. Enterprise plans offer data-residency options worth talking to Anthropic about if you handle regulated material.

Max tier is genuinely expensive. Max starts at A$170.01 a month, GST included. There’s a noticeable gap between Pro and Max that some users will feel — and most Australian individuals won’t need Max.

The top of Anthropic's range comes with strings. Claude Fable 5.1 (1 September 2026) is available to all customers on the Claude API, AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry — but it and Mythos 5.1 "carry 30-day data retention and aren't available under zero data retention unless expressly authorized by Anthropic" (Anthropic). If you are in finance, legal, health or government, that retention rule is the thing to check against your own Privacy Act obligations before routing client work through it. Claude Mythos 5.1 you cannot get at all: it is offered only to Project Glasswing participants, and Anthropic states it is "only able to make it available to a set of US organizations" (Claude Mythos). None of this touches a Pro or Max subscription, which runs on Anthropic's standard models (claude.com/pricing).

Pricing

Plan Price (AUD, GST included) What you get
Free A$0 Claude Sonnet access, limited daily usage
Pro (annual) A$28/month (A$340 billed up front) Full Pro features, lower annual rate
Pro (monthly) A$34/month 5× free usage, priority access, extended context, Claude Code
Max From A$170.01/month 5× or 20× Pro capacity
Team Standard A$34/seat/month billed annually (A$43 monthly) Shared workspace, admin controls, no training on data
Team Premium A$170/seat/month billed annually (A$213 monthly) Team Standard + higher usage caps
Enterprise US$20/seat/month billed annually, plus usage at API rates Compliance, data residency options, SSO

Anthropic quotes these prices GST-inclusive. Its pricing page carries the line "Prices include 10% GST" on both the Individual and the Team & Enterprise tab, so there is no 10% to add at checkout. That is the vendor’s statement, not our conversion. Enterprise is the one tier still quoted in US dollars, and API per-token rates stay in USD. Max renders as a single "from" figure, so the 20× tier is not shown as a separate price. Source: claude.com/pricing as rendered to Australian visitors, read 19 September 2026.

Value verdict: Pro on annual billing at A$28/month is the best entry point for any individual using Claude regularly. That figure includes GST, so it still undercuts ChatGPT Plus at A$30/month before OpenAI adds GST at checkout. The Team tiers split clearly along usage needs. Max remains heavy-commercial territory most readers won’t need.

Australian notes

  • Available in Australia: Yes — full access. Anthropic has a Sydney office and a GM for ANZ as of March 2026
  • Pricing in AUD: Yes — Anthropic displays native AUD prices to Australian visitors on Pro, Max and Team. Enterprise seats are still quoted in US dollars
  • GST: Included in the AUD price. The pricing page states "Prices include 10% GST", so there is nothing to add at checkout on the AUD plans
  • Data residency: US-based servers by default on consumer plans. Enterprise offers data-residency options
  • Local support: No general consumer support phone line, but Anthropic now has on-the-ground ANZ presence for enterprise customers
  • Local relevance: AU Government MOU on AI safety; named AU customers including Canva, CBA, and Quantium; Australia fourth globally on Claude.ai per-capita usage
  • Fair Work matters: From 20 October 2026, if you use Claude to prepare an application, submission or witness statement for a Fair Work Commission case, you must disclose that use, verify every fact and authority yourself, and say in the document that you did (fwc.gov.au/genai). The Commission names Claude as an example of GenAI and says it is not a substitute for legal advice — see our explainer.
  • Fair Work matters — update 20 September 2026: We have now read the Guidance Note itself. Paid plans are covered. The Commission's definition of "public GenAI" includes "both free and paid or subscription versions of ChatGPT, Claude, CoPilot and Gemini". A person must do the checking (para 31). You cannot ask Claude, or any other AI tool, to verify what Claude drafted. Using it only to check spelling or grammar, or to format a document, is out of scope (para 7). Guidance Note PDF

Best for

  • Professionals handling long or complex documents — legal, finance, consulting, property
  • Anyone writing proposals, reports, or client communications where quality and nuance matter
  • Developers and technical teams who want a coding assistant with strong reasoning ability (Claude Code is now included with Pro)
  • AU enterprises wanting an AI partner with local presence and government engagement

Not great for

  • Creative visual work — no image generation
  • Users who want one tool for everything — the narrower feature set means you'll likely still need something else alongside it
  • Quick web research with cited sources — Perplexity is a better fit for that use case

Alternatives worth considering

App Why you might prefer it
ChatGPT Broader features including image gen, voice, GPT Store, and more integrations
Perplexity Better for source-cited research and real-time information
Google Gemini Better Google Workspace integration with native AUD pricing from A$7.99/month inc GST

Our verdict

Claude is the thinking person's AI assistant — less flashy than ChatGPT, better at the things that matter for serious professional work. If your main use cases are reading long documents, writing polished professional content, or reasoning through complex problems, it regularly outperforms the competition. With a Sydney office, an AU Government MOU on AI safety, and named local enterprise customers, Anthropic is now the most locally engaged of the pure-play AI assistants — which matters more than it used to. Start with the free tier. If you find yourself reaching for Claude weekly, the annual Pro plan at A$28/month is the right move.

Criterion Score
Value for Money 4/5
Ease of Use 4/5
Feature Depth 4/5
Australian Fit 4/5
Reliability & Support 5/5

Australian Fit was lifted from 3/5 to 4/5 on 15 May 2026 (Sydney office, AU Government MOU, named AU customers). It was re-scored on 20 September 2026 when native AUD billing landed, and held at 4/5 — see below.

Why we scored it this way

Value for Money — 4/5. Claude has a genuinely usable free tier on Sonnet, and Pro on annual billing is A$28/month with GST already inside the price. That still undercuts ChatGPT Plus, which shows A$30/month before OpenAI adds GST at checkout, and Pro bundles Claude Code, Cowork, Design, Science and unlimited projects rather than charging for them separately. We hold it at four rather than five for two reasons. The AUD price is dearer than the USD conversion it replaced, so what an Australian actually pays went up. And the jump from Pro to Max at A$170.01/month is steep with nothing in between.

Ease of Use — 4/5. The interface is clean and the learning curve is short — paste a document, ask a question, get a considered answer. A non-technical Australian can get real value in the first session without reading any documentation. It loses a point on breadth of entry points rather than usability itself: there's no image generation to fall back on, and the connector setup (Slack, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365) is more involved than ChatGPT's one-click plugin experience for non-technical users.

Feature Depth — 4/5. This is where Claude earns its place. The large context window genuinely reads long contracts, annual reports, and policy documents end to end rather than summarising the opening pages, and Claude Opus 5 ranks at or near the top for coding and technical reasoning. Claude Code, Cowork, Design, and Science are now included from Pro up — though Anthropic is retiring the Cowork name, and a banner on the pricing page reads "Claude Cowork is now just Claude". The capped score reflects honest limitations: no native image generation, and a third-party ecosystem still smaller than ChatGPT's GPT Store, despite Google Workspace and Slack integrations landing.

Australian Fit — 4/5 (re-scored 20 September 2026, held). Anthropic opened a Sydney office on 10 March 2026 with a dedicated GM for ANZ, signed an MOU with the Australian Government on AI safety, and counts Canva, Commonwealth Bank, and Quantium among named local customers; Australia sits fourth globally on Claude.ai per-capita usage. Native AUD billing has now landed. Anthropic quotes Australian visitors in Australian dollars with GST included, which removes the exchange-rate drift and the GST guesswork this review has flagged since May. That is half of what this criterion was waiting for, and it is a real improvement. It is not the other half. The ceiling this review set was four "until AUD billing and consumer data residency land", and consumer Pro and Max data still sits on US infrastructure, with residency offered only on enterprise plans. One condition of two is not a lift, so the score holds at 4/5 — the ceiling now has a single named blocker instead of two, and the next AUD-priced pass should re-read it. Ratified under our scoring process, 20 Sep 2026; Adam may overturn. We considered whether the restrictions on the top of the range should pull it lower and decided they should not: Mythos 5.1 is unavailable to Australian organisations, and Fable 5.1 carries mandatory 30-day retention with no zero-data-retention option — but both govern frontier API access, not the Pro or Max subscription this review is scored on. They belong in your due diligence if you are building on the API; they do not change what an Australian buys here. Under our Australian Fit gate (Methodology, the Australian Fit gate), 4/5 clears the gate, so the five-star band stands.

Reliability & Support — 5/5. Claude is consistently dependable in day-to-day use, and its tendency to flag uncertainty rather than bluff makes it the safer choice for high-stakes professional work where a confident wrong answer is costly. Anthropic now has on-the-ground ANZ presence for enterprise accounts and the AI safety MOU signals a serious institutional commitment. The one gap — no consumer support phone line — is standard across this category and does not pull the score down on its own.

  • 21 Sep 2026 — correction — The Fable 5 / Mythos 5 export-control suspension was lifted on 1 July 2026. This review said it was still in force. That was wrong. Anthropic's Claude Fable page carries a notice dated 1 Jul 2026: “Access to Claude Fable 5 has been restored.” Its Claude Mythos page, same date, says “Claude Mythos 5 export controls have been lifted”. Access was restored “for a set of US organizations, following the US government's approval”. The two notices differ. The Fable restoration is unqualified; the Mythos one is limited to US organisations, so Australians did not get Mythos 5 back. The 10 Sep, 2 Sep, 28 Jun, 12 Jun and 9 Jun entries below are annotated and left standing. No score change. The suspension governed frontier API models, not the Pro or Max subscription this review scores. last_reviewed, verified and both datelines deliberately not bumped. • 20 Sep 2026 🇦🇺 — Claude now bills Australians in AUD, GST included. claude.com/pricing, as rendered to Australian visitors, carries the line "Prices include 10% GST" on both tabs. Pro is now A$28/mo on annual billing (A$340 billed up front) and A$34/mo monthly, was ~A$24 and ~A$28 as USD$17 / USD$20 conversions. Max is now from A$170.01/mo, was ~A$140 (USD$100), with the 20× tier previously shown at ~A$280 (USD$200). Team Standard is now A$34/seat/mo annual and A$43 monthly, was ~A$28/seat (USD$20 annual, USD$25 monthly). Team Premium is now A$170/seat/mo annual and A$213 monthly, was ~A$140/seat (USD$100 annual, USD$125 monthly). Enterprise is unchanged at US$20/seat/month billed annually plus usage at API rates — the one tier Anthropic still quotes in US dollars. API per-token rates are unchanged and stay in USD. • 10 Sep 2026 — Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1 released 1 September 2026. Fable 5.1 is available to "all customers" on the Claude API, plus AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry — an affirmative availability statement that supersedes the June position for this model. Both carry 30-day data retention and are not available under zero data retention unless Anthropic expressly authorises it, and both are Covered Models. Mythos 5.1 is Project Glasswing participants only, and Anthropic states it is "only able to make it available to a set of US organizations." The 12 June export-control suspension concerned Fable 5 and Mythos 5 and has not been withdrawn on its own page (superseded — it was lifted on 1 July 2026; see the 21 Sep entry); it is not evidence about 5.1 either way. A note on the pricing source. The AUD prices above were read on 19 September 2026 in a real browser with Australian egress. curl from the same machine still returns the USD page, because Anthropic serves the AUD render client-side by geolocation. The Wayback Machine cannot capture a geolocated render — any archive.org snapshot of claude.com/pricing shows the US version. The snapshot below is therefore cited for page structure, not for the Australian figures, which rest on the dated live read.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude available in Australia?

Yes — full access. As of March 2026 Anthropic has a Sydney office, a GM for ANZ, and an MOU with the Australian Government on AI safety. It's the most locally engaged pure-play AI assistant.

Does Claude charge in AUD?

Yes, since September 2026. Anthropic shows Australian visitors A$28/month for Pro on annual billing (A$340 up front), or A$34/month billed monthly, and Max from A$170.01/month. The pricing page states "Prices include 10% GST", so GST is already inside those figures. Enterprise seats are the exception and are still quoted in US dollars.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. The free tier gives Claude Sonnet access with limited daily usage. If you find yourself reaching for Claude weekly, the annual Pro plan at A$28/month is the right move.

Is my Claude data stored in Australia?

Not on standard plans. Despite the Sydney office, consumer Pro and Max data sits on US infrastructure. Data-residency options are offered only on Enterprise plans — worth discussing with Anthropic if you handle regulated material.

Is Claude better than ChatGPT for Australians?

For long documents, professional writing and careful reasoning, yes — Claude goes deeper and bluffs less. But it has no image generation and a smaller integration ecosystem, so ChatGPT wins on breadth.
