Anthropic releases Claude Fable 5 — free for now, with a data-retention catch

On 9 June 2026, Anthropic released Claude Fable 5 — the most capable model it has ever made generally available, and the first public member of its "Mythos-class" tier. For Australian Claude subscribers, the headline is simple: you can use it free right now. The catch is what happens after 22 June, and a data-retention rule worth knowing before you feed it anything sensitive.

What changed

Fable 5 sits a tier above the Opus class. Anthropic calls it state-of-the-art on nearly every capability benchmark it tested, with particular strength in software engineering, knowledge work, vision and scientific research, and the ability to work autonomously for longer than any previous Claude. The supporting numbers it cites are concrete: Stripe used it to compress "months of engineering into days" on a 50-million-line Ruby migration; it posts the top score on Cognition's FrontierBench coding eval and the highest result on Hebbia's senior-level finance benchmark.

It's available immediately across the Claude API, the Claude apps, Amazon Bedrock and GitHub Copilot. Pricing is US$10 per million input tokens and US$50 per million output tokens — Mythos-class rates, several times higher than Opus.

There's a genuine safety wrinkle: requests flagged for cybersecurity, biology/chemistry, or model-distillation concerns don't get answered by Fable 5 at all — they're routed to Claude Opus 4.8 instead. Anthropic released Fable 5 days after warning publicly that frontier AI is getting dangerously capable, and the guardrails reflect that.

What it means for Australians

Free, but on a clock. Fable 5 is included at no extra cost on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans from 9 to 22 June. From 23 June it's removed from those plans and moves to usage credits until capacity allows. So Australian subscribers get a real two-week window to test the most powerful Claude on actual work before deciding whether it's worth metered spend.

The pricing is USD, and steep. At US$10/US$50 per million tokens, this is a premium tier. For Australian API users that's the usual load — USD billing, FX, and GST on top — so model your token volume before building it into anything. Most everyday users will get more than enough from Claude's standard models; Fable 5 earns its cost on hard, long-running engineering and research tasks, not chat.

The data-retention catch. Anthropic requires a 30-day data retention on all Mythos-class traffic — including Fable 5. That's a deliberate safety measure, but it matters for Australian businesses under the Privacy Act or handling client-confidential material: prompts and outputs are held for a month. If you're in finance, legal, health or government, factor that in before routing sensitive work through it, and check it against your own obligations.

Does it change our recommendation?

Not yet. Our Claude review stands — Claude remains one of the strongest assistants for Australian professionals, and Fable 5 makes the ceiling higher for anyone doing serious technical work. But the factors that set Claude's Australian Fit score — USD consumer pricing and data residency — are unchanged, and the 30-day Mythos retention rule is a new line in the data-handling column, not a win on it. We'll reflect Fable 5 in the Claude review once the post-22-June pricing settles. Frequently asked questions

Is Claude Fable 5 free for Australians?

For now, on a clock. Fable 5 is included at no extra cost on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans from 9 to 22 June 2026. From 23 June it's removed from those plans and moves to usage credits until capacity allows.

What does Fable 5 cost after the free window?

US$10 per million input tokens and US$50 per million output tokens — Mythos-class rates, several times higher than Opus. For Australian API users that's USD billing, FX and GST on top, so model your token volume first.

Is there a data-handling catch?

Does it change Claude's recommendation for Australia?

Not yet. Claude remains one of the strongest assistants for Australian professionals, and Fable 5 raises the ceiling for serious technical work. But USD consumer pricing and data residency are unchanged, and the 30-day retention rule is a new line in the data-handling column.
