Claude vs Perplexity for Australians 2026: Which AI Should You Pick?

By Adam · 18 Jun 2026 · 11 min read
Head-to-head verdict

Our pick: Claude AI. The verdict below says who should buy the other.

Pricing figures updated 20 September 2026. Anthropic now quotes Australian visitors in Australian dollars, and its pricing page states "Prices include 10% GST", so Claude figures below are the vendor’s own rather than our conversions. Prices for other vendors that bill in USD are still converted at the current rate and shown ex-GST (Methodology).

Winner: Claude for most Australian small-business owners — better at reading long documents, writing client-facing work, and reasoning through hard problems, with the strongest local posture of any pure-play AI assistant. Pick Perplexity when your core job is fast, cited, real-time research and you'll run it alongside something else.

This is the head-to-head a lot of Australian professionals are quietly running in their heads: I've got room for one AI subscription — do I pick the one that thinks, or the one that researches? Both Claude and Perplexity score 21/25 in our reviews, and both are genuinely good. Claude now bills Australians in Australian dollars; Perplexity still bills in US dollars. But they are not the same tool doing the same job. Claude is a reasoning and writing assistant. Perplexity is a cited-sources research engine. Get that distinction right and the choice mostly makes itself.

What both tools actually do

Both let you type a question in plain English and get a considered answer back. Both have a useful free tier and both are fully available in Australia. Claude prices its paid plans in AUD; Perplexity still prices in USD. From there they diverge hard.

Claude is built for depth. Paste in a 40-page contract, an annual report, or a policy document and it reads the whole thing rather than skimming the opening pages. It writes with more nuance than most competitors — proposals, reports, client emails come out as stronger first drafts. It's strong on coding and technical reasoning, and notably honest about what it doesn't know, flagging uncertainty rather than bluffing. What it can't do: generate images, and its third-party plugin ecosystem is smaller than ChatGPT's.

Perplexity is built for research. It's not really a chatbot — it searches the live web for every query, finds the best sources, synthesises an answer, and shows you exactly where each claim came from. Its Deep Research mode has run on Claude Opus 4.6 since 13 February 2026 and produces structured multi-source reports in minutes. Higher tiers add Model Council (one query run through three frontier models at once) and Perplexity Computer (an agent that runs whole workflows for hours). What it's not built for: long-form writing, image generation, or running long conversations. It's a complement to a reasoning assistant, not a replacement.

In short: Claude reads and writes; Perplexity finds and cites. Most serious professionals end up wanting both — but if you're buying one, the job you do most should decide it.

Pricing in Australia

Claude bills in Australian dollars with GST included, so its figures are exact. Perplexity still lands on your card in USD with the exchange rate and GST on top, so we convert at roughly 1.40 and show it ex-GST. Treat the Perplexity column as an estimate that moves with the exchange rate.

Claude runs a free Sonnet tier, then Pro at A$34/month — or A$28/month if you pay annually (A$340 up front), the best entry point for any regular individual user. Pro now bundles Claude Code, Cowork and Design rather than charging for them separately. The jump to Max is steep: it starts at A$170.01/month, with nothing in between. Team Standard is A$34/seat/month on annual billing (A$43 monthly) and Team Premium A$170/seat/month annual (A$213 monthly). Anthropic’s pricing page states "Prices include 10% GST", so nothing is added at checkout. Enterprise seats are the one tier still quoted in US dollars. We read these figures on Anthropic’s pricing page, as rendered to Australian visitors, on 19 September 2026.

Perplexity also runs a strong free tier (unlimited standard search plus five Pro Searches a day), then Pro at USD$20/month — about AUD$28 after FX, ex-GST — or USD$17/month billed annually, which comes down to roughly AUD$24/month. That annual rate is the value play and lands a touch below Claude's monthly Pro. The Max tier (Perplexity Computer, Model Council, unlimited Deep Research) is priced for power users — confirm the current rate on the Perplexity Max page before committing, as it's the one figure the vendor keeps behind its own page. Enterprise Pro is around AUD$56/seat/month (USD$40) and Enterprise Max around AUD$455/seat/month (USD$325), the latter now available single-seat. Perplexity doesn't document GST on its pricing pages — expect it applied at checkout and check your first invoice.

On annual Pro, the two are within a few dollars of each other: Claude ~AUD$24/month, Perplexity ~AUD$23/month. Price is not the deciding factor here — the job is.

Where Claude wins

  • Reading long, complex documents. This is the standout. Claude's large context window genuinely reads an entire contract or report end to end. For legal, finance, consulting and property work, nothing here matches it.
  • Professional writing. Proposals, reports, client communications — Claude's output is less generic and more considered, and usually a stronger first draft.
  • Honest about uncertainty. Claude flags what it doesn't know rather than confidently inventing an answer. For high-stakes work where a confident wrong answer is costly, that's a real edge — it scores a full 5/5 on Reliability & Support.
  • The strongest local posture. Anthropic opened a Sydney office in March 2026, has a GM for ANZ, signed an MOU with the Australian Government on AI safety, and counts Canva, Commonwealth Bank and Quantium among named local customers. Australia sits fourth globally on Claude.ai per-capita usage. It's the only pure-play assistant here with on-the-ground local presence — and the reason its Australian Fit is 4/5 to Perplexity's 3/5.
  • Coding and technical reasoning. Claude consistently ranks at or near the top for software development, and Claude Code is included from Pro up.

Where Perplexity wins

  • Cited, verifiable research. Every answer comes with its sources attached, so you can check each claim yourself. For lawyers, analysts, researchers and journalists, that's the whole point — it scores 5/5 on both Value for Money and Ease of Use.
  • Real-time web answers. Perplexity searches the live web on every query. For current information, competitor tracking, and market intelligence, that beats a model answering from training data.
  • Deep Research on Claude Opus 4.6 (Perplexity changelog, 13 February 2026; model confirmed by Anthropic — Verification Standard Rule 4). Structured multi-source reports that would take a junior analyst hours come back in minutes — for due diligence, investment or competitor work, this alone can return the subscription cost within weeks.
  • Genuinely novel power features. Model Council (three frontier models on one query) and Perplexity Computer (an agent running workflows for hours) are unique in the category. If you're a full-time researcher, they're defensible.
  • A best-in-class free tier. Five Pro Searches a day plus unlimited standard search is enough to be useful before you pay a cent.

Australian fit: 4/5 vs 3/5 — and why it decides the Top Pick

Neither tool bills in AUD, and both store consumer data on US infrastructure, so neither is a five-on-five for Australians. But there's a clear gap.

Claude scores 4/5. The Sydney office, the GM for ANZ, the AU Government MOU on AI safety, and named local enterprise customers add up to a serious local posture for a pure-play assistant. It stops at four — not five — because the fundamentals Australians ask about are still unmet: no AUD billing, and consumer data sits on US servers, with data residency offered only on Enterprise.

Perplexity scores 3/5. It's fully available here, including the Comet browser across Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, but there's no local presence, no AUD pricing, no advertised AU compliance, and — importantly — no Australian data residency option on any tier, including Enterprise Max. As of the review, no IRAP statement and no SOC 2 disclosure on the public enterprise pages.

This matters beyond the score. Under our Australian Fit gate, two things require an AU Fit of at least 4/5: a five-star rating, and being named a category Top Pick. Both tools total 21/25, but Claude (4/5) earns ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ and is eligible to be our Top Pick; Perplexity (3/5) is rated ⭐⭐⭐⭐ and, however strong it is for research, cannot be the category Top Pick until it adds local pricing or data residency. So even where Perplexity wins on capability — and for pure research, it does — it can't take the category crown on Australian fit alone.

For regulated work — health, finance, government — neither is the right home for sensitive data. Microsoft Copilot, with IRAP PROTECTED data residency, remains the Australian answer for that use case, not either tool here.

This comparison is general information, not professional advice. If you're handling regulated, legal or financial material, confirm data-handling and compliance requirements for your circumstances before committing.

Which to pick — decision framework

  • You write proposals, reports or client communications, or read long contracts → Claude. The reasoning and document handling are the best here, and the writing needs less cleanup.
  • Your core job is fast, cited, real-time research → Perplexity. The source-first model and Deep Research on Claude Opus 4.6 are unmatched for due diligence and competitive work. (Perplexity's own pricing and model pages have returned HTTP 403 to us since 18 May 2026, so this model attribution is current as at the vendor's 13 February 2026 changelog and has not been re-confirmed since.)
  • You want one AI for general business use → Claude. It's the more complete day-to-day assistant, and the stronger local posture is reassuring.
  • You already run ChatGPT or Claude and want a research sidekick → Perplexity on annual Pro at roughly AUD$23/month is the best-value second tool on the market.
  • You handle regulated or government-classified data → neither — look at Microsoft Copilot for IRAP PROTECTED residency.
  • You want the safest, most locally-engaged default → Claude. The Sydney office and AU Government MOU make it the most serious local bet of the two.

The verdict

Winner: Claude, for most Australian small-business owners. Both tools score 21/25, but Claude clears the Australian Fit gate at 4/5 where Perplexity sits at 3/5 — so Claude earns five stars and is our Top Pick, and Perplexity earns four. That's not a knock on Perplexity's quality; it's the local fit talking. For the everyday jobs a busy owner actually has — reading the contract, drafting the proposal, reasoning through the hard call — Claude is the more complete tool, and at ~AUD$24/month on annual Pro it's barely more than a coffee a week.

But Perplexity is the smarter buy for one specific, valuable job: cited, real-time research. If you spend your days on due diligence, market intelligence or competitor tracking, nothing here beats it — and at ~AUD$23/month on annual Pro it's outstanding value. The honest answer is that a lot of professionals will end up running both: Claude to think and write, Perplexity to find and verify. If you can only buy one, buy for the job you do most. For the broad Australian small business, that job is reasoning and writing — and that's Claude.

Update history
  • 22 Sep 2026 — Perplexity's two at-a-glance prices re-cut off the retired 1.55 basis, and its annual rate brought up to date: A$26 → A$24 and A$31 → A$28. The comparison table was quoting three different Australian prices for one plan — A$26/mo in the table, “roughly AUD$23/month” in the body two screens down, and “about A$24/month” in the FAQ — and the table's figures were the retired ones: A$26/US$16.67 and A$31/US$20 are both 1.55, the basis our AUD pricing rule killed on 5 September 2026. The 6 September FX sweep rebased pricing tables in reviews; this at-a-glance block is a comparison grid and it was missed. The table also carried a superseded USD figure. Perplexity's pages now show annual-billing rates only — Pro US$17/month “or equivalent, when billed annually”, not the flat US$200/year this page still quoted — read live on 20 September 2026 and recorded in Ghost-Ready/review-perplexity-2026-05-16.md; that verification is the source here, not a fresh vendor check. Both figures now match that review (Pro annual ~A$24, Pro monthly ~A$28) at USD→AUD 1.4045 (ECB reference rate, 18 September 2026), ex-GST per our GST rule. Claude's A$28 and A$34 are unchanged — Anthropic bills Australians in real AUD with GST included, so our AUD pricing rule says those are printed, not converted. No score change and no verdict change: Perplexity was already the cheaper of the two on both rows and is cheaper still, and both tools keep 21/25. Sentry 18 had filed this row under GST_GROSSUP rather than FX_RESIDUE, because the other column's honest “GST included” note sits in the same table row — the reason it was written off on 21 September as a correct conversion when it never was.
