ChatGPT Review Australia 2026: Is Plus Still Worth It?

The gate: Australian Fit 3/5 does not clear the gate, so the raw 21/25 wears four stars, not five.
Skip to the verdictShort answer (prices checked 20–21 September 2026): ChatGPT is still the best all-round AI assistant for most Australians, and Plus at A$30 a month is the plan to buy. OpenAI's pricing page does not say whether that includes GST. The Australian App Store sells Plus for A$29.99 with GST included, on a tax invoice you can claim. Go at A$13 is the cheapest paid plan, but it shows ads and lacks advanced reasoning. It scores 21/25 and gets four stars, not five. Consumer plans are still hosted in the US, so Australian Fit sits at 3/5.
CORRECTION POSTED — 16 May 2026. Our 9 May 2026 review missed four material facts: (1) ChatGPT "Team" was renamed to Business in August 2025 and dropped to USD$20/seat annual; (2) the Pro plan is now two tiers ($100/month and $200/month), not one; (3) OpenAI added Australian data residency for Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare and API customers — the 9 May review said no AU option existed; (4) ads landed on the Free and Go tiers in Australia on 26 March 2026 and weren't mentioned. This review has been fully rewritten using verified primary sources. The original is preserved in our archive. Score holds at 21/25 — AU Enterprise data residency is a real plus, ads on Free are a real minus, and the rest is calibration.
ChatGPT is the AI assistant most Australians try first — and in 2026, it's still the broadest tool in the category. Built by OpenAI, it does writing, coding, image generation, voice, web browsing, Custom GPTs, Deep Research, and code execution under one subscription. The free tier remains genuinely useful. The Plus plan at A$30/month is fair for most professional work. The bigger story in 2026 is that the lineup has changed shape — a cheaper Go entry tier, ads on the lower tiers in Australia, Pro split into two prices, and (finally) the option for Australian data residency on business plans. Here's the honest picture.
What it does well
Broadest capability set of any AI assistant. Writing, coding, image generation (gpt-image-2 since 21 April 2026), voice mode, web browsing, Custom GPTs, Deep Research, and Codex are all under one subscription. No competitor matches the sheer range under one bill.
Free tier is still useful. The free plan now carries unlimited everyday text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna (subject to abuse guardrails), which handles a real share of everyday work — though Australian Free and Go users now see ads (more below). Generous enough that many casual users won't ever need to pay.
Voice mode is the best in class. Advanced Voice on Plus and above is conversational, low-latency, and unlimited on the Pro $200 tier. Useful for hands-free work, drafting on the move, and quick brainstorming.
Custom GPTs and the GPT Store. Thousands of purpose-built workflows for specific tasks (legal, finance, marketing, HR). For a small business owner who wants an off-the-shelf specialist, this is meaningful productivity.
OpenAI ships faster than anyone. The tool you pay for today is meaningfully better than it was six months ago. The Q1 2026 cycle alone added the Go tier (16 January), Business price cuts and a Codex-only seat (2 April), ChatGPT Images 2.0 (21 April), and ads in Free/Go (26 March).
AU data residency now exists — on the right plans. OpenAI added Australia as a data residency region for Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare and API customers. Not consumer plans — but a real option for AU businesses with regulatory pressure that wasn't there twelve months ago.
Watch out for
Ads on Free and Go since 26 March 2026. OpenAI launched "Sponsored Tips" in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand on the Free and Go tiers (openai.com/index/our-approach-to-advertising-and-expanding-access). Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu remain ad-free. If you've been on free ChatGPT and noticed sponsored prompts, that's why. Worth knowing before you recommend it to a client.
AUD pricing has arrived — but confirm GST at checkout. OpenAI's pricing page now displays native AUD prices for Australian visitors: Plus A$30/month, Go A$13/month, Pro from A$155/month. That fixes the old USD-only opacity we flagged in May. The vendor doesn't state on the pricing page whether the displayed AUD figure includes GST, so check the line items at checkout before you budget it.
If you want that GST question settled, buy it in the app. The Australian App Store listing charges Plus A$29.99/month, Go A$13.00, Pro 5x A$154.99 and Pro 20x A$300.00 — within a cent of the web prices, with GST already in the number and an Apple tax invoice you can retrieve and claim. On most tools in this directory the app-store path is dearer, sometimes far dearer; on ChatGPT it is the same price and better paperwork. Read 21 September 2026. (Added 21 Sep 2026.)
Default consumer settings allow training on your conversations. Australians handling sensitive client data should turn training off in Settings → Data Controls, or use ChatGPT Business or Enterprise. Default-on is a real risk for professional users who don't realise.
Confident when it's wrong. Hallucinations are still a meaningful issue. Verify any factual claim, financial figure, or legal interpretation before relying on it — particularly under time pressure. Claude tends to flag uncertainty more honestly; Perplexity cites its sources.
No IRAP certification. ISO 27001:2022, ISO 27701:2019 and SOC 2 Type II are all in place (trust.openai.com), but there's no public IRAP statement for Australian government workloads as of 16 May 2026. For agencies and contractors, that matters.

| Go | A$13/month | Everything in Free plus more messages with tools, more uploads, more image creation, more voice chats, longer memory | Yes |
| Plus | A$30/month | Advanced reasoning with GPT-6 Astra and GPT-5.6, expanded messages and uploads, expanded deep research, projects and Custom GPTs, no ads | No |

Consumer plan prices and model names re-verified 20 September 2026 on an Australian render; Business and Enterprise seat prices are carried from the 2 September check. OpenAI displays native AUD pricing to Australian visitors on consumer plans; Business seat prices show AUD alongside USD annual/monthly rates. Confirm GST treatment at checkout.
Value verdict: Plus at A$30/month remains the right call for solo professionals — advanced GPT-6 Astra reasoning, no ads, the broadest single subscription on the market. Go at A$13/month is a useful entry point for casual users who hit the free limit, but the ads and the absence of advanced reasoning make it the wrong call for professional work. Business is meaningfully better value than the old "Team" plan: the Standard seat (A$28/seat/month; USD$20 annual) is competitive with Claude Team Standard and includes no-training-on-data by default. Pro from A$155/month is genuinely heavy-commercial territory; almost no individual reader needs it. Enterprise is now the only ChatGPT plan with AU data residency — relevant for regulated industries.

- Ads: Yes — on Free and Go tiers since 26 March 2026
- Fair Work matters: From 20 October 2026, if you use ChatGPT to prepare an application, submission or witness statement for a Fair Work Commission case, you must disclose that use, verify every fact and authority yourself, and say in the document that you did (fwc.gov.au/genai). The Commission names ChatGPT as an example of GenAI and says it is not a substitute for legal advice — see our explainer.
- Fair Work matters — update 20 September 2026: We have now read the Guidance Note itself. Paid plans are covered. The Commission's definition of "public GenAI" includes "both free and paid or subscription versions of ChatGPT, Claude, CoPilot and Gemini". A person must do the checking (para 31). You cannot ask ChatGPT, or any other AI tool, to verify what ChatGPT drafted. Using it only to check spelling or grammar, or to format a document, is out of scope (para 7). Guidance Note PDF
- Fair Work matters — the Commission's own numbers, added 25 September 2026: The Commission's research report on GenAI use in dismissal cases (final report dated 18 August 2026) surveyed 408 applicants and 211 respondents and interviewed 18 parties. About 40 per cent of surveyed applicants had used GenAI to prepare or manage their case. ChatGPT was the tool named by about 77 per cent of them, and about 60 per cent of those were on the free tier. Self-represented applicants now outnumber represented ones by more than two to one. In his 8 September speech, the President, Justice Hatcher, said the 40 per cent figure "fairly precisely correlates" with a 70 per cent rise in filings over three years, and that AI's "sycophantic" habit of telling people what they want to hear is producing weak claims, inflated expectations and resistance to settlement. One interviewee told the researchers they trusted ChatGPT over a lawyer and would check a lawyer's advice against it. Another, after losing, said ChatGPT "was giving inflated expectations that I would win". That is the honest limitation to carry into any workplace dispute: ChatGPT will tell you your case is strong whether or not it is. Get a lawyer, a union or a community legal centre to check before you file. Speech PDF · Wayback · Research report PDF · Wayback
Best for
- Anyone new to AI — the reference point most people already know; the easiest tool to start on
- Solo professionals and small business owners who want one Swiss-army subscription rather than three specialist ones
- Content creators and marketers who need writing, image generation, and Custom GPT workflows in a single bill
- AU businesses with regulatory pressure on a paid plan — Enterprise data residency is now a real option for the right buyer
Not great for
- Casual users who want an ad-free experience without paying — Free and Go now carry ads in Australia; you'll need Plus or higher
- Long-document, careful-writing work — Claude tends to need less editing on professional content
- Research where citations matter — Perplexity is more reliable for cited, source-first work
- AU government or PROTECTED-classification workloads — no IRAP; Microsoft Copilot is the AU answer
Alternatives worth considering
| App | Why you might prefer it |
|---|---|
| Claude | Better for long documents, professional writing, and complex reasoning. Sydney office, AU Government MOU |
| Google Gemini | Native AUD pricing, Sydney + Melbourne data centres, IRAP certified |
| Perplexity | Better for cited, real-time research with verifiable sources |
| Microsoft Copilot | Better if you run Microsoft 365 — and the only option in this lineup at IRAP PROTECTED |
Our verdict
ChatGPT is still the best default AI assistant for most Australians in 2026 — and still the right starting point for almost anyone new to AI. The free tier is genuinely useful, Plus at A$30/month covers most professional work, and no other tool matches the breadth of features under a single subscription. Three things have shifted since the original 9 May review that you should know: the cheaper Go tier at A$13/month is a real entry point but carries ads; Pro now starts from A$155/month with 5× and 20× usage tiers above Plus; and Enterprise customers can now keep their data resident in Australia. For most readers, the right move is Plus, with model training turned off in Settings. For a five-seat business, the new ChatGPT Business plan is cheaper than it was a year ago and worth a serious look. For anyone with regulated-data exposure, Enterprise is now genuinely viable — but get a quote and verify the residency region in your contract.

AU Fit holds at 3/5, on one remaining condition rather than two. Corrected 21 Sep 2026: this line read "consumer plans remain USD-priced", which contradicted the Australian notes above — OpenAI has displayed native AUD to Australian visitors since before our 2 September re-verify (Plus A$30, Go A$13, Pro from A$155). The condition that is still unmet is Australian data residency on consumer plans: Free, Go, Plus and Pro remain US-hosted, with Australia offered only on Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare and API. Ads on Free and Go, and the absence of an IRAP statement for government work, hold it there too. Meeting the residency condition would lift it to 4/5 — and at 21/25 that would clear the Australian Fit gate and take this review to five stars. See the 21 Sep note in the update history for the argument that it should already be 4/5.
Why four stars on a 21/25? Our Australian Fit gate reserves ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent for tools scoring at least 4/5 on Australian Fit. ChatGPT scores 3/5, so it's rated ⭐⭐⭐⭐ — a strong recommendation, just not "Excellent for Australians" until its local fit catches up. The 21/25 criteria total stands.

Update history
- 9 Oct 2026 — Housekeeping: replaced internal editing references in this history with plain wording. No fact, price or score changed.
- 25 Sep 2026 🇦🇺 — The Fair Work Commission has put numbers behind its Guidance Note, and they name this product. The Commission's GenAI research report (18 Aug 2026; 408 applicants and 211 respondents surveyed) found about 40 per cent of surveyed applicants used GenAI on their case, ChatGPT for about 77 per cent of them, most on the free tier. The President's 8 Sep speech ties the figure to a 70 per cent rise in filings and quotes litigants on ChatGPT's inflated confidence. Added as a dated bullet to the Australian notes, with the professional-advice caveat. Both PDFs read at primary and snapshotted today. No price or score change. Speech · Report
- 24 Sep 2026 — Added a short answer at the top of the page, drawn from the 20 and 21 September figures. Removed a duplicated update-history entry and a duplicated App Store paragraph. No claims re-verified. No price or score change.
- 21 Sep 2026 (3) — The Australian App Store agrees with the website, to the cent — which is rarer than it sounds and worth printing. The Australian App Store listing declares
"priceCurrency":"AUD", names OpenAI OpCo, LLC as seller and sells ChatGPT Plus at A$29.99/month, ChatGPT Go at A$13.00, ChatGPT Pro 5x at A$154.99 and Pro 20x at A$300.00, GST included, on an Apple tax invoice. Set against the web figures re-verified on 20 September — Plus A$30, Go A$13, Pro from A$155 — the two paths are within a cent of each other. Out of the 43 Australian listings with AUD tiers on the roster, this is one of only a handful where that is true: Leonardo AI charges 49% more in the app, Motion 2.6 times, Wordtune nearly three. It also settles the GST question the note above leaves open. OpenAI does not state on its pricing page whether the displayed A$30 includes GST; Apple bills Australians through its Australian entity, so the in-app A$29.99 certainly does, on a retrievable tax invoice. A GST-registered Australian business that wants a claimable invoice for ChatGPT Plus should buy it in the app, and pays a cent less for doing so. No price, claim or score changes. Found by the app-store pricing pass,Audits/app-store-pricing-2026-09-21.md. Wayback: capture pending (archive.org saving unavailable 21 Sep 2026). - 21 Sep 2026 (2) — Directory flag corrected:
aud_native: true. The generated directory carriedhas_aud: falsefor ChatGPT while this review says in four places that OpenAI displays native AUD to Australian visitors — Plus A$30, Go A$13, Pro from A$155 — verified on 2 September and again on 20 September. The manifest value was a heuristic guess, and the heuristic had it backwards. The flag is now set explicitly in frontmatter, which is authoritative. No price, claim or score changes. This does bear on the open Australian Fit question recorded in the note above: the directory was, until today, publicly agreeing with the stale half of that argument. - 21 Sep 2026 — Correction to the Australian Fit rationale, and an open question flagged for the editor. The score table's rationale said "consumer plans remain USD-priced". That is false and contradicted this review's own Australian notes forty lines above it, which say native AUD pricing arrived before our 2 September re-verify and cite the figures. The rationale was written in May and never revisited when the fact under it moved. The score does not change: the published bar for 4/5 was native AUD pricing and Australian data residency on consumer plans, and consumer plans are still US-hosted, so 3/5 holds on this review's own terms. The open question. Asana AI was raised 3/5 → 4/5 today on an identical profile — native AUD, clean GST, Australian residency gated to the enterprise tier, no local support, no AU-aware outputs. Consistency says ChatGPT should move too. It is flagged rather than applied because ChatGPT sits at 21/25, so 4/5 would clear the Australian Fit gate and put five stars and "Excellent for Australians" on the most-read review on the site, along with Editor's Choice eligibility. Two Australian-fit negatives have no Asana equivalent: ads served to Australians on Free and Go since 26 March 2026, and the Fair Work Commission disclosure obligation from 20 October 2026. Neither sits inside the five things this criterion measures, which is itself a question worth ruling on. No score, star count or Editor's Choice status changed today.
- 20 Sep 2026 🇦🇺 — Australia's app-store age checks became enforceable on 9 September 2026 and do not reach ChatGPT. The store gate covers only apps rated R18+. The plan comparison table lists GPT-6 Astra on Plus and expanded on Pro. Every Australian price is unchanged: Free A$0 · Go A$13 · Plus A$30 · Pro from A$155 per month, all displayed natively in AUD.
