Verdict in one line: A genuinely careful health chat space that Australians can use — but the headline feature, medical record integration, is US-only.

⚠️ STALENESS FLAG — 5 September 2026. This first look was published 9 January 2026 and is 239 days old. It has not been re-verified against the vendor since. AI products move fast: pricing, model versions, plan names and Australian availability may all have changed. Read the verdict below as a snapshot of January 2026, not as a current recommendation. (House rule: any review over six months old carries this flag until it is updated.)

What launched

On 7 January 2026 OpenAI announced ChatGPT Health, a dedicated space inside ChatGPT for health and wellness conversations, with optional connections to medical records and wellness apps. Early access rolled out to Free, Go, Plus and Pro users outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK — which put Australians in the first wave.

What it does

Health separates medical conversations from your general chat history and applies stricter handling to them. Connect-your-data is the pitch: US patient portals and wellness apps feed context so answers reflect your actual history, not a generic patient. Apple Health connection requires an iOS device.

Pricing for Australians

No separate fee — Health arrived across Free, Go, Plus (US$20/month, ~A$28) and Pro plans. The capability gap isn't paywalled; it's geographic.

Australian Fit

Here's the rub. The chat space works in Australia. The medical record integrations are US-only — they're built on US patient-portal plumbing, and there is no My Health Record connection. Add the obvious data question: health conversations processed offshore, under OpenAI's policies rather than the Australian Privacy Principles' health-record protections. That's a 2/5 Australian Fit at launch — usable, but the best parts are somewhere else.

Early read

Good: separating health chats from general history is the right design; availability across free tiers is generous; answers in our testing window were appropriately cautious. Not so good: without record integrations Australians get a well-mannered health chatbot, not a health platform; and "early access" meant inconsistent rollout timing.

Early verdict

Worth switching your existing health questions into — the privacy separation alone justifies that. Not worth choosing ChatGPT over a rival for, until the integrations story includes Australia.

  • 20 Sep 2026 — Staleness check: vendor page not reachable to the agent; no claims re-verified this pass. OpenAI's ChatGPT Health announcement, the help centre and the live pricing page all refused our requests or returned an empty shell. The Australian availability, plan and medical-record claims below therefore stand unchecked since January. last_reviewed deliberately not bumped. Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT Health available in Australia?

Yes. Early access rolled out on 7 January 2026 to Free, Go, Plus and Pro users outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK — putting Australians in the first wave. The chat space works here.

Does it cost extra for Australians?

No. There's no separate fee — Health arrived across the Free, Go, Plus (US$20/month, roughly A$28) and Pro plans. The capability gap for Australians is geographic, not paywalled.

Does this change our ChatGPT recommendation for Australians?

Not yet. The headline feature — medical record integration — is US-only, built on US patient portals with no My Health Record connection. It's worth switching health questions into, but not a reason to choose ChatGPT over a rival.

Is ChatGPT Health safe to rely on for medical decisions?

No. Nothing it says is a diagnosis, and health conversations are processed offshore under OpenAI's policies rather than the Australian Privacy Principles' health protections. It doesn't replace qualified professional advice — see your GP.
