ChatGPT vs Perplexity for Australian researchers — general assistant or research engine?
Our pick: Perplexity AI. The verdict below says who should buy the other.
Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).
Editor's note (16 May 2026): Every pricing, feature, and model claim below is anchored to the verified 14 May 2026 ChatGPT and Perplexity dossiers (status: VERIFIED — SOURCE OF TRUTH), themselves anchored to primary vendor pages. AUD figures use the editorial standard exchange rate of AUD ≈ 1.40, ex-GST — both vendors bill in USD.
Both tools score 21/25 on our framework. Both are USD-priced. Both have free tiers worth using. Beyond that, they're not really comparable. ChatGPT is built as a general-purpose assistant — write, code, generate images, talk, summarise — that can also do research. Perplexity is built as a research engine that happens to be conversational. For Australian readers asking "which one should I pay for?" the answer collapses almost entirely on what kind of work you actually do.
If you spend your week analysing markets, screening companies, doing due diligence, summarising regulatory updates, tracking competitors, or producing cited briefings, this comparison is genuinely about which tool gets your money. If you write more than you research, the comparison is the wrong one — pair Perplexity Pro with Claude Pro instead, and treat ChatGPT as the all-rounder it actually is.
Here's the honest head-to-head for the research case.
TL;DR
- For source-led research — every claim cited, low hallucination, trustable for due diligence — Perplexity wins decisively. The cited-source model is the feature.
- For breadth across one subscription — research, writing, image generation, voice, coding, Custom GPTs — ChatGPT wins. Nothing matches the range.
- For cheapest premium AU price — Perplexity Pro on annual billing at ~A$29/month with GST. ChatGPT Plus is ~A$34/month.
- For the new agentic research workflows — Perplexity has the edge. Model Council (cross-checks Claude, GPT, Gemini in one query) and Perplexity Computer (multi-hour autonomous research) are unique in the category as of May 2026.
- For Australian data residency on a consumer plan — neither. ChatGPT Enterprise offers AU residency; Perplexity offers none on any tier. For regulated AU research, Microsoft Copilot at IRAP PROTECTED is the answer instead.
For most Australian researchers and analysts: Perplexity Pro on annual billing for the research workhorse, ChatGPT Plus on monthly billing only if you also need images, voice, or broad creative work. Many serious operators run both; the all-in is roughly A$63/month with GST.

The pricing takeaway. At the casual-use entry tier, ChatGPT Go at A$13/month is the cheaper sample — but it carries ads in Australia and strips out advanced reasoning, so it's the wrong call for research work. At the serious-use tier, Perplexity Pro on annual billing at ~A$23.33/month ex-GST is the cheapest premium AI in the category — about A$5/month less than ChatGPT Plus. For a researcher or analyst who lives in this tool, annual Pro is the value play.
One detail the international reviews miss: ChatGPT has ads on Free and Go in Australia since 26 March 2026 (source). Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu remain ad-free. Perplexity has no ads on any tier.
Feature differences — where each one is genuinely better
This is the section that should decide the call.
What ChatGPT does better:
- Breadth of capability. Writing, coding (Codex), image generation (gpt-image-2 since 21 April 2026), voice mode, Custom GPTs, Deep Research, web browse — all under one subscription. Nothing in the category matches the range.
- Custom GPTs and the GPT Store. A meaningful library of pre-built workflows for specific tasks (legal research, financial modelling, market analysis). Perplexity has Skills but the ecosystem is smaller.
- Voice mode. Advanced Voice on Plus and above is conversational and low-latency; unlimited on the Pro $200 tier. Perplexity doesn't really compete here.
- Image and video adjacency. ChatGPT still generates images, but Sora video is gone. OpenAI closed the Sora app on 26 April 2026 and closes its API on 24 September 2026. Perplexity has no image or video generation.
- Familiar interface and broad ecosystem. ChatGPT is the AI most Australians already know — onboarding cost is essentially zero.
- Australian Enterprise data residency. The only one of the two that offers Australia as a data-residency region today, on Enterprise / Edu / Healthcare / API plans (source).
What Perplexity does better:
- Every answer is cited. This is the entire value proposition and it genuinely delivers. You can see exactly where each piece of information came from and verify it yourself. For legal research, due diligence, investment analysis, journalism, or any work where accuracy is the deliverable — this is the feature.
- Hallucination rate is the lowest in the category. The source-first model dramatically reduces fabrication. ChatGPT can still confidently invent a citation; Perplexity rarely does, because the citation is the answer.
- Deep Research runs an Anthropic Opus model. Perplexity moved it to Opus 4.6 on 13 February 2026 and its help centre still names Opus 4.6 for Max and Opus 4.5 for Pro (last modified 15 September 2026) — though its own model roster now lists Opus 5 and no 4.6, so read the exact version with caution. The result is structured multi-source research reports that would take a junior analyst hours.
- Model Council — unique in the category. Launched on the Max tier on 5 February 2026. Runs your query through three frontier models in parallel — Perplexity documents the default as one each from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google, swappable from a picker (help centre, read 21 September 2026) — then a synthesiser reconciles the outputs. Nothing else does this. For high-stakes questions where you'd otherwise check the same answer against three different chatbots, it's a one-step shortcut.
- Perplexity Computer — agentic research. Launched on the Max tier on 25 February 2026. Creates and executes research workflows that can run for hours. Personal Computer on Mac landed 17 April 2026.
- Comet browser puts the agent inside every page. Comet is Perplexity's browser — Mac, Windows, iOS, Android — with Comet Agent running inside. Comet has its own model selector and Perplexity no longer publishes which model is the default on which tier, so we no longer name one.
- No ads on any tier. ChatGPT Free and Go now carry ads in Australia. Perplexity doesn't.
The summary: ChatGPT is a wider tool. Perplexity is a sharper one. For research work specifically, sharper wins.
Australian fit — the part the international reviews miss
Neither tool is particularly AU-tailored on consumer plans. Both bill in USD with GST at checkout. Both store consumer data on US infrastructure. Neither offers native AUD pricing the way Gemini and Microsoft Copilot do.
Where ChatGPT pulls ahead:
- Australian data residency on business plans. Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare and API customers can select Australia as a residency region (source). Perplexity offers no AU residency on any tier as of 16 May 2026.
- Global compliance certifications. ISO 27001:2022, ISO 27701:2019, SOC 2 Type II (trust.openai.com). Perplexity advertises no equivalent on its enterprise pages reviewed during the verification pass.
Where Perplexity pulls ahead:
- No ads in Australia. ChatGPT Free and Go now show sponsored prompts in Australia. Perplexity doesn't on any tier — which matters if you're a researcher who'd recommend a tool to a client or colleague.
For regulated Australian research work — legal, financial, health, government, defence — neither is the right answer. Microsoft Copilot at IRAP PROTECTED is the only AI in this category at the highest AU public-cloud classification. Read the Gemini vs Copilot comparison for the regulated-work decision instead.
Who should pick what
The right answer depends on the shape of the work.
If you're an investment analyst, due diligence professional, or fund manager — go with Perplexity Pro on annual billing. The Deep Research mode, running an Anthropic Opus model, produces structured, cited reports faster than any other tool in the category. Step up to Max if you do this daily and want Model Council in the kit.
If you're a journalist, researcher, or academic — Perplexity Pro. Citation quality is non-negotiable; Perplexity's source-first model is the feature. ChatGPT's web browse is fine for casual fact-checking but not for research that needs to stand up.
If you're a management consultant or strategy professional — Perplexity Pro for the research workhorse, plus Claude Pro for the writing. Combined cost ~A$58/month with GST. ChatGPT is the wrong default here — its breadth doesn't outweigh Claude's writing quality or Perplexity's citation discipline.
If you're a marketer, content creator, or solo business owner who occasionally researches — ChatGPT Plus. The breadth is the value: writing, image generation, voice, Custom GPTs. Add Perplexity's free tier for the occasional cited search.
If you're a developer or technical operator — ChatGPT Plus (Codex). Perplexity is the wrong tool for code; pair it with Claude Pro if you research while you code.
If you do regulated AU research — neither. Microsoft Copilot at IRAP PROTECTED is the answer. Talk to a Microsoft reseller about Copilot Business or Enterprise.
If you're casual about AI and just want one tool to try — start with ChatGPT's free tier and Perplexity's free tier in parallel. Both are useful within a week. Pay for whichever you reach for more often after a fortnight.
Our verdict
For Australian researchers, analysts, and consultants — the audience this comparison is built for — Perplexity Pro on annual billing is the better tool and the better value in 2026. The cited-source model is the feature you can't replicate in ChatGPT no matter how good the underlying model is. Deep Research on an Anthropic Opus model, Model Council, and Perplexity Computer have moved this from "a clever search wrapper" into "a multi-product research platform" — and the Pro plan at ~A$29/month with GST is the cheapest premium AI in the category. ChatGPT remains the better generalist and the right pick if your work isn't research-shaped; for breadth, image and voice work, and Custom GPTs, it's still the broadest single subscription on the market.
The most common pattern for serious operators is to run both: Perplexity Pro as the research workhorse (~A$29/month annual), ChatGPT Plus as the all-rounder (~A$34/month monthly). All-in roughly A$63/month with GST. Fewer Australian professionals regret that pairing than regret picking only one and trying to make it cover everything.
One thing worth knowing: if your work is mostly writing rather than research, this comparison is the wrong one. Pair Perplexity with Claude Pro instead of ChatGPT, and the result is better on both axes — Claude writes more carefully, Perplexity researches more honestly, and the bill comes to ~A$58/month with GST on Pro-annual + Pro-annual.

Update history
- 25 Sep 2026 — ChatGPT's column was still a May conversion; OpenAI has shown Australians native AUD since before 2 September. Go "~A$11.20" (US$8 × 1.4) is A$13, Plus "~A$28.00" is A$30, Pro "~A$280" is from A$155, all as displayed on chatgpt.com/pricing and matched to the cent by the Australian App Store (see the ChatGPT review, 21 Sep). The gap to Perplexity Pro annual (~A$23.33) therefore widens from "about A$5" to about A$7 a month; the winner and the reasoning do not change. Perplexity's own figures stay as USD conversions until it prices in AUD. Caught by the cross-file price sentry. No score change. Source
- 21 Sep 2026 — Perplexity model claims re-verified against the vendor's own help centre and corrected. Model Council no longer runs a fixed Opus 4.6 / GPT-5.5 / Gemini 3.1 Pro trio — Perplexity now documents the default line-up only as "one frontier model each from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google", user-swappable from a picker (help centre); the old claim was wrong and has been rewritten. Deep Research is still documented as Opus 4.6 Thinking for Max and Opus 4.5 Thinking for Pro (help centre, last modified 15 September 2026), but the same help centre's model roster lists Claude Opus 5 and Sonnet 5 and no 4.6 at all (roster), so the version is stated generically here. Comet Agent per-tier defaults are no longer published by Perplexity and have been dropped rather than left stale. No score change. Full sweep:

Frequently asked questions
Which is cheaper for an Australian user?
Perplexity Pro on annual billing at ~A$23.33/month is the cheapest premium AI in the category — about A$7/month less than ChatGPT Plus at A$30. ChatGPT Go at A$13/month is cheaper than either, but it carries ads in Australia and strips out advanced reasoning, so it's not a serious-research substitute. Both vendors' free tiers are genuinely useful.
Should I run both?
If you do regular research and also need image generation, voice, or Custom GPTs — yes, and many serious operators do. All-in roughly A$63/month with GST. For research-only work, Perplexity Pro alone is enough.
Will my data train the model?
Default settings differ. ChatGPT consumer plans allow training on conversations unless you turn it off in Settings → Data Controls. Perplexity's consumer plans don't advertise training-on-conversations as a default behaviour, though their data-handling specifics aren't documented as clearly as ChatGPT's. For sensitive research, use ChatGPT Business or Enterprise (no training on data by default), or wait for Perplexity Enterprise Pro / Enterprise Max for stronger controls.
Which is better at Deep Research?
Both vendors call their long-form research mode "Deep Research." Perplexity's Deep Research has run an Anthropic Opus model since 13 February 2026 (source) and produces cited, structured reports. ChatGPT's Deep Research uses OpenAI's GPT-class models and produces strong but uncited reports. For research where citation is part of the deliverable, Perplexity wins.
What's "Model Council" and is it worth Max?
Model Council runs your query through three frontier models in parallel — one each from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google by default, and you can swap them — then synthesises the outputs (source). It's Max-tier only on Perplexity, with no equivalent on ChatGPT. For high-stakes questions where the cost of being wrong is high, it's a genuine differentiator. Most readers will be fine on Pro and don't need Max.
Can I claim either as a business expense in Australia?
For tools used in producing assessable income, generally yes — but both bill in USD with GST at checkout. Check your tax invoice for the supplier's identifier and the GST line. Talk to your accountant before treating it as deductible. This is general commentary, not tax advice.
How often will this comparison be updated?
Quarterly at minimum, and immediately on any material change to either tool's pricing, model lineup, or Australian availability. The "last reviewed" date at the top of the page is the source of truth.
What we changed our minds about
When we ran the original 9 May reviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity scored 21/25 and 20/25 respectively. Perplexity's Q1 2026 product cycle — Model Council, Deep Research on an Anthropic Opus model, Perplexity Computer, Comet across all platforms, Enterprise Max single-seat unlock — moved Feature Depth from 3/5 to 4/5 on the 16 May refresh. Total moved to 21/25, putting it level with ChatGPT on our framework. That makes this comparison closer than it looked in May; the right answer now depends almost entirely on the shape of your work, not the score table.
We'll update when either tool ships a material change.
