Verdict in one line: Workplace video for people who will never open Premiere — now at the only price that matters for trying it.

What launched

In April 2026 Google opened Google Vids — its AI-powered video creation suite, previously a Workspace perk — to everyone: free for up to 10 videos a month with a Google account, available globally.

What it does

Vids is video-as-document: pick a template or prompt the AI with what you need ("a 60-second onboarding explainer for new staff"), and it drafts a storyboard, script, scenes, stock footage, voiceover and captions, all editable in a Docs-like interface. It's built for the unglamorous video that businesses actually produce — training clips, announcements, how-tos, simple promos — not cinema.

Pricing for Australians

Free: 10 videos/month. Beyond that, Vids comes with paid Workspace plans and Google AI subscriptions (see our Google AI Plus first look). For an Australian small business, ten videos a month is genuinely enough to run a basic content cadence without spending a dollar. AUD/GST applies normally if you upgrade via Google Australia.

Australian Fit

Global availability includes Australia from day one of the free tier; English-first product; AUD billing on paid tiers. Offshore processing, and the stock/voice libraries lean American — expect to swap in your own footage and watch the generated voiceover's pronunciation of Australian place names. 4/5.

Early read

Good: the storyboard-first workflow means you edit a plan, not a timeline — this is the right abstraction for non-editors; output is presentable enough for internal use immediately; free means the experiment costs only an afternoon. Not so good: ten videos vanish fast once a team adopts it (which is the point — it's an upsell funnel); creative control is shallow by design; and brand consistency takes manual effort every single time — check the free tier's export limits against your needs before you commit a workflow.

Early verdict

If your business "should do more video" and never does, the excuse expired in April. Start with the free tier for internal and social video; upgrade only when the monthly cap actually bites.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Google Vids free tier available in Australia?

Yes. The April 2026 free tier launched globally, so Australians had it from day one of the free release.

Does it cost anything?

The free tier is free: 10 videos a month with a Google account. Beyond that, Vids comes bundled with paid Workspace plans and Google AI subscriptions, with AUD billing and GST applied normally if you upgrade via Google Australia.

Is ten videos a month enough?

For an Australian small business running a basic content cadence — about one video a week — yes, genuinely. But ten vanish fast once a team adopts it, which is the point: it's an upsell funnel. Check the export limits before committing a workflow.

Who should try it?

Any business that "should do more video" and never does. Use it for internal and social video; upgrade only when the monthly cap actually bites. Note the stock and voice libraries lean American and processing is offshore.
