The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.
Skip to the verdictPricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).
Verdict (TL;DR): Vidu is the AI video platform from Shengshu Technology, a Chinese AI company. The tool is fast, the output from the Vidu Q3 model is genuinely good, and the feature set — reference-to-video, image-to-video, text-to-video, lip sync, face swap, video remaker, and more — is broader than many competitors at comparable price points. Daily login credits and a bonus system make the free tier stretch further than most. But the analysis for Australian business buyers is the same as for Kling and Hailuo: Shengshu is a PRC entity, your uploads are subject to Chinese law, and the content and training licence is broad. No AUD pricing, no GST invoice, no Australian data residency. For creators making non-sensitive personal content, Vidu is an interesting platform. For anyone handling client footage, proprietary images, identifiable faces, or sensitive business assets, this is not a safe choice under Australian data governance expectations.

What Vidu is
Vidu (vidu.com) is an AI video generation platform developed by Shengshu Technology Co. Ltd (生数科技), a Chinese AI company. Shengshu was founded in 2023 and is headquartered in Beijing, China. The company is backed by Tsinghua University spinout technology and has attracted significant investment from Chinese venture capital. Vidu is its flagship consumer and B2B product for AI video generation.
The platform generates video from multiple input types: reference images (one or more, for character or style consistency), still images, text prompts, or combinations. The current generation model is Vidu Q3, which Shengshu positions as a multi-reference-consistent model — meaning you can define characters or visual styles from photos and maintain them across multiple generated clips without re-prompting from scratch each time.
Beyond core video generation, Vidu offers a notably broad tool suite:
- Reference to Video (R2V) — Vidu's signature feature: define characters or scenes from reference images, then generate video with consistent visual identity
- Image to Video (I2V) — animate a still image
- Text to Video (T2V) — generate from a text prompt alone
- Story Grid — storyboard-style multi-shot layout
- AI Video Cutter — in-platform editing
- AI Lip Sync — synchronise audio to video
- AI Face Swap — face replacement in video
- AI Video Remaker — transform existing video in new styles
- Video Enhancer — upscale and improve quality
- AI Sound Effect Generator — generate audio for clips
- Text to Speech — voiceover generation
This is a wide feature set for a single platform. The depth of post-generation tooling puts it closer to a production suite than a pure generation tool, though still behind LTX Studio in terms of workflow integration.
Vidu is available as a web application (vidu.com) and as a mobile app (iOS and Android). The platform claims users in "200+ countries."
What it costs in Australia
Vidu's plan cards did not render for the June read; on 9 October 2026 they did, in a browser on an Australian connection, in both the yearly and monthly views. Three paid tiers sit above a free plan, priced in US dollars (the page names USD six times in its markup and bills through Stripe), with a yearly toggle at "18% OFF" and a "first-time purchase" promotion on each card. As with Hailuo, the price is not the deciding factor; the data-jurisdiction question below is.
From the FAQ content confirmed from the vendor page: Vidu uses a credit system with three credit types — Subscription Credits (valid 30 days), Purchased Credits (valid 2 years), and Bonus Credits earned through events or the Artist Program (valid 2 years). New users receive sign-up trial credits. Daily login earns additional credits. Billing runs through Stripe for subscribers, with automatic monthly or annual renewal.
Vidu does not offer AUD pricing. There is no Australian billing entity, no ABN, and no GST-claimable tax invoice. GST treatment is for the buyer to self-assess.
| Plan | Monthly billing (USD/mo) | Yearly billing (USD/mo, billed yearly) | Approx. AUD/mo at the yearly rate (ex GST) | Credits/month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | USD $0 | USD $0 | A$0 | Trial and daily login credits; 10 references a month; 540p at 4 credits a second |
| Standard | USD $10 | USD $8.25 (USD $99 a year) | ~A$12 | 800 (about 200 videos, per Vidu) |
| Premium | USD $43 | USD $35.42 (USD $425 a year) | ~A$50 | 3,500, plus an off-peak quota of 20 videos a day |
| Ultimate | USD $230 | USD $191.67 (USD $2,300 a year) | ~A$268 | 10,000 or 20,000 on the card's selector (the page's own comparison table says 8,000), plus 200 off-peak videos a day |
Read 9 October 2026. Vidu quotes the effective credit price on each card (100 credits for USD $1.25 on Standard monthly, down to USD $0.96 on Ultimate yearly) and badges every paid card "first-time purchase: up to 17–18% off", so a first bill may be lower than the figures above. AUD conversions use ~1.40 USD:AUD (October 2026). Capture: Dossiers/captures/vidu-pricing-2026-10-09.txt.
The daily login bonus is worth noting: Vidu credits users for logging in each day, which can meaningfully extend the useful life of a free or low-tier subscription for active users. This is a generous mechanic not common in competing platforms.
How it works in practice
Vidu's strongest differentiator is the Reference to Video workflow. You upload one or more reference images — a photo of a person's face, a product, a location — and Vidu uses those references to anchor the visual identity of the generated clip. The character in the generated video looks like the person in your reference photo with reasonable fidelity. This is not perfect — faces can drift on longer or more complex motion prompts — but it is better than most at maintaining identity consistency without requiring prompt engineering gymnastics.
The template-based tools make it accessible for non-technical users. Like Hailuo's consumer tools, Vidu offers one-click template generators for common use cases: AI hug generator, AI kissing generator, trend effects, transformation videos. These are fun for personal content and demonstrate the underlying model's quality quickly.
The production toolset (AI Lip Sync, Face Swap, Video Remaker, Video Enhancer) means you can do more post-generation work inside the platform than with most comparable tools. The AI Video Cutter provides basic in-platform clip trimming. For short-form social content workflows, this reduces the number of external tools needed.
The Story Grid feature is a rudimentary storyboard tool — you can lay out multiple shots in a grid before generating, which is useful for planning but less developed than LTX Studio's full storyboard mode.
Generation times are fast, competitive with Hailuo AI, and the Vidu Q3 model produces output that holds up well for social-content use cases. Cinematic realism at the level of Kling or Runway is not quite there, but the multi-reference consistency feature closes a gap that those tools do not address as directly.
What it does well
Reference-to-video consistency. Vidu's R2V feature is its clearest competitive advantage. Character identity consistency from reference images, across multiple shots, without manual re-prompting is genuinely useful for anyone producing narrative content or branded video with recurring characters.
Broad tool suite. Lip sync, face swap, video remaker, sound effects, text to speech — more post-generation functionality in one platform than most competitors at this tier. Less switching between tools for basic production tasks.
Generous free tier mechanics. Daily login credits and sign-up bonuses make the free tier stretch further than it appears on paper. Active users can generate meaningfully before hitting a credit wall.
Fast generation. The Vidu Q3 model produces clips quickly on standard settings. Fast iteration is important for creative work, and Vidu competes well here.
Mobile app. Available on iOS and Android. Most AI video platforms are desktop/web only; Vidu's mobile app is a real point of difference for creators who want to manage projects on the go.
Story Grid. Basic storyboarding capability for multi-shot planning. Less developed than LTX Studio's storyboard mode but more structured than pure generation tools.
What it doesn't do well
No production-level camera controls. Unlike Runway's advanced camera movement tools or LTX Studio's keyframe controls, Vidu does not offer precise shot control over camera movement, focal length, or motion physics. You direct via prompt; you do not direct via a camera-control UI.
Opaque pricing. The subscription pricing details are not readily accessible without a logged-in session. This is a recurring issue with Chinese AI platforms and makes budget planning harder than it needs to be.
No AUD pricing or GST invoice. Standard offshore gap, but material for business buyers. USD-only billing from a Chinese company with no Australian entity.
Clip length limits. Generated clips run to approximately 4–8 seconds in standard mode. Longer productions require stitching clips in external editing software or using the in-platform cutter — which is basic.
No Australian data residency. All data processed offshore with no onshore Australian option.
Face swap and lip sync tools carry their own risk. These are powerful features and useful for legitimate production work. They also raise questions about responsible use — Vidu's terms must be checked for deepfake-adjacent content restrictions. (exact content policy terms — review before using face-related generation tools with real people's images.)
Australian fit — and the China data caution
Pricing: No AUD pricing. USD-only billing through Stripe. No Australian billing entity, no ABN, no GST-claimable tax invoice.
Data residency and Chinese law exposure: Shengshu Technology Co. Ltd (生数科技) is a Beijing-based PRC entity. Vidu's terms and privacy policy pages returned no rendered content during this review's research phase (specific policy terms). However, the corporate structure is confirmed: Shengshu is a Chinese company developing AI under Chinese law, as confirmed by its Beijing headquarters and the Chinese-language company name.
The same legal framework applies as for Kling AI and Hailuo AI. Under the PRC's National Intelligence Law (Article 7), PRC entities must support, assist, and cooperate with state intelligence work on request. The PRC's Cybersecurity Law and Data Security Law further require data compliance with Chinese state authorities. These obligations apply to Shengshu as a PRC entity regardless of where Vidu's servers are physically located.
The practical consequence for Australian businesses is identical to Kling and Hailuo: uploading footage of clients, branded content, identifiable employees or customers, unreleased products, proprietary creative assets, or anything commercially sensitive to a Shengshu-operated platform exposes that content to Chinese law obligations. This is not a theoretical risk and it is not mitigated by which data centre the bytes sit in.
Read our Kling AI review for the full legal framework — the analysis applies equally here.
Hard verdict: For Australian government, finance, health, legal, or any business handling client-confidential or proprietary material: do not use Vidu for that material. For personal social content from your own ideas: the risk profile is personal and more acceptable, but you should understand what you are opting into.
Support: No Australian support channel. Contact: support@vidu.com. No local business hours.
Australian Fit score: 1/5. Available in Australia, but no AUD pricing, no GST invoice, no AU data region, and a PRC parent with Chinese law exposure on all uploads.
Alternatives
Kling AI — The closest direct comparable among Chinese platforms. Better cinematic realism and stronger brand recognition, at broadly similar price points. Same China-jurisdiction analysis applies. Our full Kling review details the legal framework.
Runway — US-based, no China exposure. More precise camera controls and stronger cinematic quality. More expensive. The professional recommendation for business-critical video work.
LTX Studio — Israeli company, no China exposure. Better production workflow and multi-model integration than Vidu. Character consistency via Elements is comparable to Vidu's R2V approach. Worth comparing directly.
Bottom line
Vidu is a technically capable AI video platform with a stronger feature set than many of its peers at the same price tier. The Reference to Video consistency feature is genuinely differentiated. The broad post-generation tool suite — lip sync, face swap, video remaker, enhancer — makes it a useful production platform for social content creators who want one workspace.
For Australian business buyers, the conclusion is the same as for every PRC-parent AI platform we review: the Chinese law exposure from Shengshu's Beijing headquarters applies to everything you upload, regardless of server location. No AUD pricing, no GST invoice, no onshore data, and a corporate structure that makes data governance a real procurement risk for regulated industries or client-facing work.
For personal, non-sensitive creative work, Vidu is worth trying — the free tier's daily login credits make it genuinely accessible, and the output quality is competitive. Just know what the terms of the arrangement are before you put anything sensitive into it.
Score
| Criterion | Score | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Value for Money | 3/5 | Daily login credits and bonus system are generous. Paid tiers now verified: Standard at USD $8.25–$10 a month for 800 credits is cheap for light use; Premium at USD $35–$43 is where regular work starts. No AUD pricing, no GST invoice. |
| Ease of Use | 3/5 | Templates and mobile app help accessibility. R2V workflow has a learning curve. Generation is fast. |
| Feature Depth | 4/5 | Broadest post-generation toolset in this review: lip sync, face swap, video remaker, enhancer, sound effects, TTS, Story Grid. R2V consistency is strong. |
| Australian Fit | 1/5 | No AUD pricing, no GST invoice, no AU data region. PRC parent (Shengshu, Beijing) — Chinese law exposure on all uploads. |
| Reliability & Support | 1/5 | No AU support channel. Privacy/terms (unconfirmed). PRC jurisdiction risk ongoing. Pricing is no longer opaque, which was the least of the reasons for this score. |
| Total | 12/25 | ⭐⭐⭐ Good |

Frequently asked questions
Is Vidu AI safe for Australian business use?
Not for business-sensitive footage. Vidu is made by Shengshu Technology, a Beijing-based PRC company. Under China's National Intelligence Law (Article 7) and Cybersecurity Law, PRC entities must cooperate with Chinese state intelligence requests. Any footage, images, or proprietary content uploaded to Vidu is subject to these obligations regardless of server location. For government, finance, health, legal, or any business handling client or proprietary material, this is a hard no. Personal, non-sensitive social content carries a different risk profile, but you should understand what you are opting into.
What is Vidu's Reference to Video feature?
Reference to Video (R2V) is Vidu's signature feature. You upload one or more reference images — a person's face, a product, a location — and Vidu uses those references to maintain visual consistency across generated video clips. The character or object in your generated video looks like the reference image across multiple shots without needing to re-prompt the appearance each time. This is useful for branded video, narrative content, and anything requiring consistent characters.
Does Vidu charge in Australian dollars?
No. Vidu does not offer AUD pricing. Billing is USD-only through Stripe, with no Australian billing entity, no ABN, and no GST-claimable tax invoice. Australian subscribers should self-assess their GST treatment. The plans, read 9 October 2026, are Standard USD $10 a month (USD $8.25 billed yearly) for 800 credits, Premium USD $43 (USD $35.42 yearly) for 3,500 and Ultimate USD $230 (USD $191.67 yearly) for 10,000 to 20,000, above a free plan with daily login credits.
