The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.
Skip to the verdictPricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).

Verdict (TL;DR): HeyGen is the avatar engine the rest of the "faceless content" world copies. Feed it a single photo and a script and it returns a talking-head video — no camera, no studio, no on-screen presence. The Creator plan at USD$29/mo (~AUD$41/mo before GST, ~AUD$45 landed) is the right entry point for a solo operator who wants weekly explainers or social clips. But it bills in USD on the web (the iPhone app charges A$49.00/month with GST included and an Apple tax invoice, at the same landed cost), holds your data offshore, and the avatars — Avatar V included — still carry a faint stiffness that careful viewers notice. Buy it if you produce video regularly and the time saved beats the subscription. Skip it if you film yourself happily already, or if you only need a clip a month.

Who this is for (and who it isn't)
Get HeyGen if you're a solo consultant, course creator, coach or small-business owner who needs to ship talking-head video on a schedule — weekly LinkedIn clips, course modules, product explainers, multilingual versions of one script — and you'd rather not set up a camera, light yourself and re-record every fluffed line.
Skip HeyGen if you already film comfortably and enjoy it, only need one video a month (the cost-per-video gets silly), or your brand lives or dies on warmth and on-camera authenticity. Avatars are good. They are not you on a good day.
HeyGen is the anchor of the faceless content stack: pair it with an AI voice tool like ElevenLabs for the audio, a script from any LLM, and you can produce a finished explainer without ever appearing on camera or speaking aloud.
What HeyGen is
HeyGen is an AI video platform that generates talking-head videos from avatars. You type a script (or upload audio), pick an avatar — a stock one, a photo avatar, or a "digital twin" trained on you — and it renders a video of that avatar speaking your words with lip-sync, facial expression and hand gestures.
Two avatar engines matter in 2026:
- Avatar IV (released May 2025) turns a single photo plus a script into a lifelike talking video, including hyper-realistic, anime and even animal styles (HeyGen — Avatar IV).
- Avatar V (released April 2026) is the newer flagship. You record a 15-second video of yourself so it learns your gestures and mannerisms, then applies that motion to any base photo — different outfit, setting or angle, but the movement is unmistakably yours (HeyGen — Avatar V). HeyGen positions Avatar V for real human twins and Avatar IV for virtual or non-human characters.
It also does translation/dubbing into 175+ languages on paid plans, voice cloning, and a stock library of 500+ avatars.
What it costs in Australia
HeyGen prices in USD only on the web. There is no AUD price list on the site, even on the .com page served to Australian visitors (HeyGen — Pricing), so the conversions below use AUD ≈ 1.40 × USD. (Corrected 21 Sep 2026 — this line previously said HeyGen prices in USD only, full stop. The iPhone app prices in Australian dollars at effectively the same landed cost; see below.)
| Plan | USD/mo | ~AUD/mo (ex-GST) | Credits/mo | Key limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | — | 3 videos/mo, 1 min each, watermark, 1 digital twin |
| Creator | $29 | ~$41 | 600 | Up to 30-min videos, no watermark, 175+ languages, voice cloning |
| Pro | $49 | ~$69 | 1,000 | Customisable usage, 4K export, faster processing |
| Business | $149 + $20/seat | ~$209 + ~$28/seat | 1,500 | Up to 60-min videos, 5 digital twins, SAML/SSO |
| Enterprise | Contact sales | — | Flexible | No duration cap, dedicated success manager |
All figures from HeyGen — Pricing, accessed 3 June 2026. Annual billing is offered at a discount on each paid tier.
In the app, the same plans are priced in Australian dollars — at the same landed cost, with a tax invoice. The Australian App Store listing declares "priceCurrency":"AUD" with HeyGen Technology Inc as seller of record. Read 21 September 2026:
| In-app purchase | Price | Against the web |
|---|---|---|
| Creator — monthly | A$49.00 | Our own landed figure for Creator is ~A$50 — a wash |
| Creator — annual | A$449.00 | Roughly A$37.40/month, below the monthly rate either way |
| Starter — monthly | A$15.00 | No direct web equivalent — compare inclusions |
| Pro (1,000 credits) — monthly | A$79.00 | Our landed figure for Pro is ~A$75 — a wash |
| Premium credit packs | A$7.99 (60) · A$14.99 (150) · A$22.99 (250) | Top-ups, no published web equivalent |
The prices match, so the reason to buy in the app is the paperwork: GST is already in the number and Apple's receipt is a valid Australian tax invoice with an ABN, which the web checkout does not give you. If you run this as a business, that is the door to use.
The credit catch. Credits are the real currency. Standard avatars burn roughly 1 credit per minute, but the premium Avatar V/IV engines consume materially more, and HeyGen doesn't publish a clear per-minute credit rate for them. The practical effect: a plan's headline "30-minute videos" can translate to far fewer minutes once you're generating with the premium avatars. Read the credit allowance, not the minutes line — and test on the free tier before you commit.
GST. Most international SaaS displays an ex-GST USD price, then bills ~10% GST on top at an AUD-converted checkout under Australia's imported-digital-services rules. HeyGen makes no GST statement on its pricing page, so on the web assume the landed cost is ~10% above the AUD conversion, that your card is billed in USD with a foreign-currency conversion fee on top, and confirm at checkout. In the app it is settled: Apple bills Australians through its Australian entity, GST is in the A$ figure, and the receipt is a claimable tax invoice. (Corrected 21 Sep 2026.)
Value verdict: Creator at a real-world ~AUD$41/mo landed is fair if you ship video weekly — that's a few dollars per finished clip versus hours of filming. Below roughly one video a week, the per-video cost climbs and the free tier (watermarked, 1-minute) is too thin to lean on commercially.
How it works in practice
First value is fast. Sign up, pick a stock avatar, paste a script, choose a voice, hit generate — you can have a 30-second clip in under two minutes. No editing software, no rendering rig.
The digital-twin path takes longer. For Avatar V you record a 15-second consent-and-motion video and select a clear base photo; training and the consent check add a wait before your twin is usable. Translation is genuinely useful: one English script, dubbed into 175+ languages with matched lip movement, is the feature most Australian operators will actually return to.
What it does well
- Single-photo to talking video. Avatar IV produces a lip-synced, gesturing talking head from one still image plus a script — no footage required (HeyGen — Avatar IV).
- Genuinely fast first output. A short stock-avatar clip renders in roughly two minutes; iterating on a script is just re-typing and re-generating, not re-filming.
- Multilingual dubbing that lip-matches. 175+ languages and dialects on paid plans (HeyGen — Pricing) — write once, localise for migrant-market or export audiences.
- Avatar V keeps your real mannerisms. Trained from a 15-second clip, it carries your gestures across outfits, backgrounds and camera angles (HeyGen — Avatar V).
- Serious consent controls. A recorded consent video with a spoken four-letter code, plus automatic celebrity-face flagging for human review (HeyGen — Content Moderation Policy). Better safeguards than most rivals.
What it doesn't do well
- The avatars still read slightly off. Even Avatar V carries a faint uncanny-valley stiffness — micro-timing on blinks and gestures that attentive viewers clock as "not quite human". Fine for explainers; risky for high-trust, face-of-the-brand content.
- USD-only billing on the web. No AUD price there, so you wear currency conversion and likely a card forex fee on every charge (HeyGen — Pricing). The iPhone app bills in Australian dollars at the same landed cost. (Corrected 21 Sep 2026.)
- Credits obscure the true cost. Premium-avatar minutes drain credits far faster than the plan's headline video-length suggests, and HeyGen doesn't publish the per-minute Avatar V rate clearly.
- Free tier is commercially thin. Three 1-minute, watermarked videos a month (HeyGen — Pricing) — enough to test, not to run a channel.
- No Australian presence. No AU data residency, no AU-hours support line, no ABN tax invoice (see below).
Australian fit
- Available in AU: Yes — fully accessible, no geo-blocking.
- Pricing in AUD: In the app, yes; on the web, no. The Australian App Store charges A$49.00/month or A$449.00/year for Creator with GST included; heygen.com is USD only, converted at checkout (HeyGen — Pricing). (Corrected 21 Sep 2026 — this line previously read "No. USD only.")
- GST: Not stated on the pricing page. Assume ~10% GST is applied at an AUD checkout under imported-digital-services rules; confirm whether a compliant tax invoice showing an ABN is issued — HeyGen publishes nothing to confirm one is.
- Data residency: No Australian data residency offered or claimed. Your scripts, photos and trained likeness are processed offshore (US-based company). Material if you handle client faces or sensitive content.
- Compliance / consent: Strong consent framework — recorded verification with a spoken code, celebrity-face detection, and an Actor's right to request removal at any time (HeyGen — Content Moderation Policy). Under Australian law you remain responsible for consent and for not producing misleading content.
- Local support: No AU-hours support and no local entity. Support is online, US-timezone-weighted.
Australian Fit is the weak leg here — USD billing, no AU data residency, no confirmed ABN invoice. That caps the overall rating regardless of how good the product is (see Score).
Alternatives
| Tool | One-line reason to consider it |
|---|---|
| Synthesia | The other avatar heavyweight — more enterprise/training-focused, also USD-billed; compare on stock-avatar polish. |
| ElevenLabs | Not an avatar tool — the AI voice half of the faceless stack. Pair it with HeyGen for the audio. |
| Descript | If you'll happily film yourself, edit video by editing text instead — avoids avatars entirely. |
| Filming on your phone + CapCut | The honest zero-subscription option if authenticity matters more than scale. |
Bottom line
HeyGen is the best avatar engine an Australian solo operator can buy in 2026, and the Creator plan at ~AUD$41/mo landed is the right place to start — if you ship video on a schedule. The maths works when the hours you save filming and re-recording outweigh the subscription; it doesn't when you only need the occasional clip, in which case stay on free or just film yourself. Go in clear-eyed on three things: you'll be billed in USD with no ABN tax invoice, your data leaves the country, and even the new Avatar V isn't quite indistinguishable from the real you. Within those limits, it's a genuinely useful tool — not a replacement for being on camera when being human is the point.
Score
| Criterion | Score | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Value for Money (AUD) | 4/5 | ~AUD$41/mo Creator is fair for regular video; credit system obscures true premium-avatar cost. |
| Ease of Use | 5/5 | Stock-avatar clip in under two minutes; no editing skills needed. |
| Feature Depth | 5/5 | Avatar IV/V, 175+ language dubbing, voice cloning, digital twins — deep and current. |
| Australian Fit | 2/5 | No AU data residency and no AU-hours support — the two that decide a procurement conversation, both unchanged. Gains a mark because the Australian App Store bills Creator at A$49.00/month with GST included on an Apple tax invoice carrying an ABN, at the same landed cost as the USD web path. (Was 1/5; corrected 21 Sep 2026 — see Update history.) |
| Reliability & Support | 2/5 | Capable platform and strong consent controls, but US-weighted support and no local entity. |
| Total | 18/25 | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good |
Australian Fit Gate: raw total 18/25 already sits in the four-star band, so no cap applies. Note that with AU Fit at 2/5, HeyGen cannot be a five-star Excellent rating or a category Top Pick regardless of product quality.
Update history
- 22 Sep 2026 — the May credits post is gone, and HeyGen has changed plan model again since.
heygen.com/blog/heygen-premium-features-updatereturns HTTP 404. The May 2026 rename is still documented, in HeyGen’s live help centre rather than its blog, and the citation is re-pointed there. Reading the replacement turned up a change this review does not cover: HeyGen now describes the unlimited plans as legacy, and sells “newer credit-based plans” in their place, warning that a legacy customer who cancels or switches cannot go back. The currentheygen.com/pricingpage no longer uses the words “Premium Credits” or “Generative Credits” at all. Not re-priced or re-scored here — flagged to the monitor and toaid-score-sync, because a plan-model change is a pricing pass, not a citation fix. Wayback: capture pending. - 21 Sep 2026 — Australian Fit corrected 1/5 → 2/5. Total 17/25 → 18/25. The band does not change: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good. The bullet above is right about heygen.com and was looking at the wrong surface. HeyGen's Australian App Store listing declares
"priceCurrency":"AUD", names HeyGen Technology Inc as seller and sells in Australian dollars with GST included, on an Apple tax invoice: Creator A$49.00/month or A$449.00/year, Starter A$15.00/month, Pro (1,000 credits) A$79.00/month, plus premium-credit packs at A$7.99, A$14.99 and A$22.99. The price is a wash, which is what makes the correction count. This review already published Creator as "~AUD$41/mo ex-GST, ~AUD$50 landed with GST". The App Store charges A$49.00 including GST — within a dollar of our own landed figure — and Pro at A$79.00 against our ~A$75 landed. So an Australian pays the same and gets, in exchange, a price quoted in their own currency and a tax invoice with an ABN on it. That invoice is the point. This review's Australian Fit row named four failures — "USD-only, no AU data residency, no confirmed ABN tax invoice, no AU-hours support" — and two of them are answered by Apple being the merchant of record in Australia. The two that remain are the ones that decide a procurement conversation: no AU data residency and no AU-hours support. 1/5 → 2/5, no further. Value for Money holds at 4/5: the cost is unchanged, only the currency it is quoted in. Was 17/25, was Australian Fit 1/5. Found by the app-store pricing pass,Audits/app-store-pricing-2026-09-21.md. - 24 Sep 2026 — The grossed-up AUD column removed from the pricing table. The table carried a second Australian column adding 10% GST to every converted figure, so each plan had two Australian prices and the higher one asserted a tax most of our readers do not pay: a GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service. The ex-GST column is unchanged and is the price. Removed, and kept visible here per our price-history rule — the column headed “~AUD landed (inc. ~10% GST)”: Free $0; Creator ~$50; Pro ~$75; Business ~$229 + ~$31/seat.

Frequently asked questions
Is HeyGen available in Australia?
Yes — fully accessible with no geo-blocking. But there's no Australian presence: no AU data residency, no AU-hours support line and no local entity. Your scripts, photos and trained likeness are processed offshore by a US-based company.
Does HeyGen charge in AUD?
It depends where you buy. On heygen.com, no — prices are USD only even on the page served to Australian visitors, the Creator plan is USD$29/month (about A$41 ex-GST, ~A$50 landed), and expect a foreign-currency conversion fee on your card. In the iPhone app, yes: the Australian App Store charges A$49.00/month or A$449.00/year for Creator and A$79.00/month for Pro, GST included, on an Apple tax invoice. The landed cost is the same; the app is the one that gives you a claimable invoice.
Is there a free plan?
Yes, but it's thin. The free tier gives 3 watermarked videos a month, 1 minute each, and one digital twin — enough to test, not to run a channel commercially.
Is GST charged, and will I get an ABN tax invoice?
GST isn't stated on the pricing page. Assume about 10% is applied at an AUD checkout under imported-digital-services rules. HeyGen publishes nothing confirming it issues a compliant tax invoice showing an ABN — confirm at checkout.
Who should buy HeyGen?
Solo consultants, course creators and small-business owners shipping talking-head video on a schedule — the Creator plan at about A$41/month landed is the entry point. Skip it if you film yourself happily, only need a clip a month, or your brand lives on on-camera authenticity.
