Figma AI Review Australia 2026: The designer's AI — but check the training toggle first

The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.
Skip to the verdictPricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).
Verdict (TL;DR): Figma AI is the most useful AI a working product designer can have, for one simple reason — it lives inside the tool the work already happens in. Rename a hundred layers in one click, fill mockups with realistic copy instead of lorem ipsum, generate and edit images with Google's Gemini 3.0 Pro and OpenAI's GPT Image 1, and prompt a whole working prototype into being with Figma Make. For a designer or product team already paying for Figma, the AI is a genuine time-saver, and from USD$16 per seat a month it is fairly priced. The Australian picture improved in 2026: local data hosting in Australia is now generally available — but only on the Enterprise plan, and there is still no IRAP and no AUD billing, so regulated buyers should confirm the scope. And the data posture has a sting: AI content training is ON by default on the Starter and Professional plans most Australian small businesses will be on. An admin has to switch it off. Recommend for AU designers and product teams already on Figma — just find that toggle on day one.

Who this is for (and who it isn't)
Most reviews on this site are written for a busy Australian who wants AI to do more with less. Figma AI needs a different framing up front, because it is not a general assistant and it is not a standalone app you sign up for.
Figma AI is for you if you are a product designer, a UX designer, a design-minded founder, or part of a product team that already opens Figma every day. The AI features are woven into Figma Design, FigJam and Figma Slides, plus the prompt-to-prototype surface called Figma Make. For that person, the AI removes the boring parts of the job.
Figma AI is not for you if you want a general image generator to make social posts, or an AI to draft emails and summarise documents. That is a different job. For everyday AI help, our ChatGPT and Claude reviews are the right starting point. For building an app by describing it without touching a design canvas, read our Lovable review. Buying a Figma seat just to make a logo is the wrong tool for the task.
With that settled: for the people Figma is built for, its AI is the strongest in the category. Here is why, and where the Australian caveats bite.
What Figma AI actually is
Figma is the browser-and-desktop design platform that most of the world's product teams use to design interfaces and prototypes. Figma AI is not a separate product — it is a layer of AI features built into that platform, which became generally available on 24 July 2025 after a long beta (Figma — Building Figma AI).
There are two halves to it. The first is a set of in-canvas helpers inside Figma Design, FigJam and Figma Slides. You can auto-rename and organise every layer in a file with one click, generate and replace placeholder text with realistic copy, generate and edit images, remove an image background in a single step, and rewrite or translate copy to adjust its tone and length (Figma — AI features). The image features are powered by Google's Gemini 3.0 Pro and OpenAI's GPT Image 1, named directly on Figma's own AI page. FigJam adds generate, sort and summarise; Slides adds tone adjustment and draft presenter notes.
The second half is Figma Make — a prompt-to-prototype, prompt-to-code surface. You describe what you want, or hand it an existing design, and it produces a functional high-fidelity prototype. You can pull in styling context from your Figma library so the output matches your design system, edit the result directly, and even connect a Supabase backend to ship a working web app with user authentication and stored data — no coding required (Figma — Figma Make). It is the feature that puts Figma in the same conversation as the new wave of "build by describing it" tools, but anchored to a real design system.
What it costs in Australia
Figma prices in US dollars. The pricing page literally states "Prices in USD," and there is no AUD billing, so the figures below are estimates at US$1 ≈ A$1.40 with around 10% GST assumed at checkout for Australian accounts. Figma sells by seat — Full, Dev and Collab — and each seat type carries its own monthly allocation of AI credits.
| Plan / seat | Price (USD) | Price (AUD est., ex-GST) | AI credits/month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter (free) | $0 | $0 | 500/mo (capped at 150/day) |
| Professional — Full | USD$16/seat/mo | ~AUD$22/seat/mo | 3,000 |
| Professional — Dev | USD$12/seat/mo | ~AUD$17/seat/mo | 500 |
| Professional — Collab | USD$3/seat/mo | ~AUD$4/seat/mo | 500 |
| Organization — Full | USD$55/seat/mo (annual) | ~AUD$77/seat/mo | 3,500 |
| Organization — Dev | USD$25/seat/mo (annual) | ~AUD$35/seat/mo | 500 |
| Enterprise — Full | USD$90/seat/mo (annual) | ~AUD$126/seat/mo | 4,250 |
| Enterprise — Dev | USD$35/seat/mo (annual) | ~AUD$49/seat/mo | 500 |
Pricing as of 2 June 2026. Source: figma.com/pricing and Figma — Manage AI credits. Collab seats are USD$5/mo on Organization and Enterprise. Organization and Enterprise are billed annually. AUD figures are estimates at FX 1.40 with ~10% GST assumed — Figma publishes no AU-specific GST guidance, so confirm the GST line and the vendor's ABN on your first tax invoice.
The wrinkle is AI credits. AI usage across every feature draws from a shared credit pool tied to your seat; credits reset monthly and do not roll over. When a seat runs out, an admin can buy more through an ongoing subscription or pay-as-you-go billing, charged at USD$0.03 per credit (Manage AI credits). Pay-as-you-go has been live on Organization and Enterprise; Figma states it is coming to the Professional plan in June 2026. The practical effect: light AI users sit comfortably inside their seat allocation, but a designer leaning hard on image generation and Figma Make can burn through 3,000 credits and either wait for the reset or start paying per credit.
Value verdict: For a designer already on a Professional Full seat at roughly AUD$22/month, the AI is effectively a free upgrade to a tool you already need — strong value. As a reason to buy Figma purely for the AI, it makes far less sense; you are paying for a design platform, and the AI is the bonus.
How it works in practice
The features that earn their keep are the unglamorous ones. Auto-renaming layers sounds trivial until you inherit a file with 300 layers called "Rectangle 47" and Figma tidies them in one pass — the kind of chore that quietly eats an afternoon. Replacing lorem ipsum with realistic, context-aware copy makes a mockup feel like a real product in a client review rather than a wireframe. Remove-background in one step kills a task that used to mean manual lassoing.
The image generation, on Gemini 3.0 Pro and GPT Image 1, is competent for in-context design work — placeholder photography, concept imagery, quick variations — though it is not a reason to abandon a dedicated tool if image generation is your whole job. Rewrite-and-translate is genuinely handy for an Australian team localising an interface or trimming copy to fit a button.
Figma Make is the headline. Describe a screen, or point it at an existing frame, and it returns a working prototype you can interact with and refine. Tie in your Figma library and the output respects your design system. Connect Supabase and you can stand up a small web app with real data. It is impressive, and it is the clearest signal of where Figma is heading. It is also the feature most likely to eat your AI credits, so treat it as a tool for exploration and early builds rather than something to run all day without watching the meter.
What it does well
- It lives where the work is. No new app, no context-switch. The AI is in the canvas you already use, which is the single biggest reason it gets used rather than admired.
- The boring chores are genuinely automated. One-click layer renaming, realistic placeholder copy, and one-step background removal each remove a real, repeated time-sink from a designer's day.
- Figma Make turns a prompt into a working prototype. Pull in your design system for consistency, edit the output directly, and connect a Supabase backend to ship a real web app without writing code (Figma — Figma Make).
- Strong, named image models. Image generation and editing run on Gemini 3.0 Pro and OpenAI's GPT Image 1, named on Figma's own AI page rather than left vague.
- A serious compliance stack. SOC 2 Type 2, SOC 3, the ISO 27001:2022 family (27017, 27018, 27701), EU Cloud Code of Conduct, C5, TISAX and FedRAMP Authorized (Figma — Security). Few design tools come close.
- Third parties can't train on your content. Figma states its third-party model providers, including OpenAI, are not permitted to use customer content uploaded to Figma to train their own models (Building Figma AI).
Watch out for
- AI content training is ON by default on Starter and Professional. This is the one to know. Figma sets content training to "on" by default for Starter and Professional plans — the plans most Australian freelancers and small studios will be on — and an admin must opt out. It is "off" by default only for Organization and Enterprise (Building Figma AI). Find the setting before you put client work through it.
- USD-only pricing. No AUD displayed anywhere. You are billed in US dollars at your bank's FX rate, with GST added at checkout, so the landed cost runs higher than the headline figure.
- AU data residency, but Enterprise-only — and no IRAP. This is the part of the AU story that changed in 2026: Figma's localized file hosting now lists Australia as an available region (generally available since Q1 2026), alongside the EU and India. The catch is that it's an Enterprise-plan feature — the Starter, Professional and Organization plans most Australian small businesses use don't get it — and there is still no IRAP assessment. For work under APRA, the Privacy Act or government procurement, Enterprise plus the AU region is the path; everyone else stores data offshore (Figma — Enable localized file hosting; Figma — Security).
- AI credits can run out mid-task. Heavy use of image generation and Figma Make depletes your monthly credit pool, after which you wait for the reset or pay USD$0.03 per credit. Pay-as-you-go only reaches the Professional plan in June 2026.
- No local support. Help Center, a support request form and a community forum. No AU office hours or phone line are named on Figma's public pages.
Australian fit
- Available in Australia: Yes — no geographic restriction. Browser and desktop apps and self-serve signup work globally (figma.com/pricing).
- Pricing in AUD: No. USD only. Expect roughly AUD$22/seat/month landed on a Professional Full seat after FX, ex-GST.
- GST: Not stated on the pricing page. Expect 10% added at checkout under Australia's imported-digital-services rules — confirm on your first invoice and check it is a compliant tax invoice for your accountant.
- Data residency: AU region available, but Enterprise-only. Figma's localized file hosting lists Australia (ap-southeast-2 / ap-southeast-4) as an available region from Q1 2026 — but it's an Enterprise-plan feature, with no IRAP. Starter, Professional and Organization plans store data offshore. Confirm scope with Figma sales for regulated workloads.
- Compliance: SOC 2 Type 2, SOC 3, ISO 27001:2022/27017/27018/27701, EU Cloud Code of Conduct, C5, TISAX, FedRAMP Authorized and CSA CAIQ — but no IRAP and no AU-specific certification (figma.com/security).
- AI data-training: ON by default for Starter and Professional (team-level admin opt-out); OFF by default for Organization and Enterprise (org-level). No data from Education or Government accounts is used for training. Third-party providers are not permitted to train on customer content (figma.com/ai/our-approach).
- Local AU support: None advertised. Help Center, support form and forum; Enterprise adds more.

Bottom line
If you already design in Figma, its AI is an easy yes. The layer-renaming, realistic-copy and background-removal tools quietly give you time back every week; Figma Make is a real step forward for prototyping and early builds; and the image models are competent for in-context work. At roughly AUD$22 a month for a Professional Full seat, the AI rides along with a tool you already need, which is the best kind of value.
The reasons it scores 18 rather than higher are mostly Australian and partly about the data default. The AU posture is mixed — local data residency is now available, but only on Enterprise, and the rest is thin: USD-only pricing, no AUD billing, no IRAP, no local support hours. And the content-training default on Starter and Professional is a genuine trap for unwary small businesses: it is on until an admin turns it off. The global compliance stack and the promise that third parties won't train on your content are real points in Figma's favour, but the default still puts the onus on you.
So: if you are an Australian product designer or part of a product team already on Figma, use the AI — it is the best in its class for your job. Before you put any client or proprietary work through it, open your admin settings and switch content training off if you are on Starter or Professional. And don't buy a Figma seat as a general AI tool; that is not what it is.
We would expect to refresh this review inside six months — Figma ships AI features quickly, the credit model and pay-as-you-go rollout are still settling, and AU billing and data residency are the areas most likely to change. We will flag any material movement in the monitor.

Frequently asked questions
Is Figma AI available in Australia?
Yes — no geographic restriction. Browser and desktop apps and self-serve signup work globally. Figma AI isn't a standalone product; it's a layer of features inside Figma Design, FigJam, Slides and the Figma Make prompt-to-prototype surface.
Does Figma charge in AUD?
No. The pricing page states prices are in USD, with no AUD billing. A Professional Full seat is US$16/mo (~A$22 inc. estimated GST). Expect ~10% GST added at checkout under the imported-digital-services rules — confirm on your first tax invoice.
Is there a free plan?
Yes. The Starter tier is free and includes 500 AI credits a month (capped at 150/day). AI usage draws from a credit pool that resets monthly and doesn't roll over — heavy image generation or Figma Make use can exhaust it, after which you wait for the reset or pay US$0.03/credit.
Is my design data stored in Australia?
Only on Enterprise. Figma's localized file hosting now lists Australia as a region (GA since Q1 2026), but it's an Enterprise-plan feature with no IRAP — Starter, Professional and Organization plans store data offshore. Confirm scope with Figma sales for regulated workloads.
Does Figma train AI on my content?
By default, yes — on Starter and Professional, AI content training is ON and an admin must switch it off. It's OFF by default only on Organization and Enterprise. Find that toggle on day one before putting client work through it. Third-party model providers aren't permitted to train on your content.
