The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.
Skip to the verdictPricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).

Verdict (TL;DR): Fotor is the closest thing to a Swiss Army knife in this category — browser-based photo editing, templated design and text-to-image AI generation in one cheap subscription. For a Melbourne business owner who needs to tidy product photos, knock out a few social tiles and generate the odd image, it does the job for less than the price of a coffee a week. The catch: it bills in US dollars, hosts your files offshore in China, and the AI image quality sits a clear notch below dedicated tools. A solid utility, not a destination.

What Fotor is
Fotor is a web-based (and desktop and mobile) creative suite that does three jobs in one login: photo editing, graphic design with templates, and AI image generation from a text prompt. It's been around since the early 2010s as a photo editor and has since bolted on the design-template side (think a lighter Canva) and a generative-AI layer.
The company behind it is Chengdu Everimaging Science & Technology Co., Ltd., based in Chengdu, China. That matters for Australians, and we'll come back to it.
The pitch is breadth at a low price. You're not buying best-in-the-world at any single task. You're buying "good enough at three tasks" for one cheap fee — and for a lot of small operators, that's exactly the trade they want.
What it costs in Australia
Fotor prices in Australian dollars. Re-checked 23 September 2026 in a browser on an Australian connection: fotor.com/pricing renders AU$ on every tier and contains no US$ and no USD anywhere on the page. There is no currency selector to set and no “approximate price” disclaimer — this is the vendor's Australian price list. What Fotor still does not do is itemise Australian GST, so you will not get a tax invoice with GST broken out the way an Australian supplier would. The individual figures below are withdrawn pending a clean read — see the correction at the top of this review.
| Plan | Vendor price — withdrawn 23 Sep 2026, see above | Approx AUD (ex-GST) | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic (Free) | A$0 | Free | Limited free credits, watermarked exports, 512MB storage, basic editing |
| Pro | A$16.49 billed monthly · A$71.99 billed yearly (read 23 Sep 2026) | Vendor-set AUD, not converted | Watermark-free HD exports, all editing tools, more credits, 2GB storage |
| Pro+ | Higher AUD figures are on the page — A$29.99, A$104.99 and A$109.99 among them — but the digit roller hides which belongs to which tier. Not attributed here. | — | Everything in Pro plus AI image generation, batch processing, priority queue, 100GB storage |
| Max | Top tier; figure not separable from the roller | — | Highest credit and storage tier (500GB), 50 concurrent generations |
AUD basis: none needed — Fotor publishes Australian dollars directly, so nothing here is converted. It does not itemise Australian GST, so the figures are an indicative conversion, not a GST-inclusive quote. Source: Fotor's pricing page confirms the Basic / Pro / Pro+ / Max structure, credit roll-over (up to five months) and storage tiers. The Pro figures (US$12.99/mo monthly, US$8.99/mo on annual billing) are corroborated across multiple current listings. The page renders the Pro+ and Max dollar figures via JavaScript that did not load on capture, and secondary listings disagree on them, so we have left those as bands rather than print a number we cannot stand behind. Confirm the live figures on the pricing page before purchasing.
The free tier is genuinely usable for evaluation — you can earn credits through sign-up, daily check-ins and community activity. Exports are watermarked until you pay. Credits roll over while you stay subscribed, which is a fairer model than the "use it or lose it" approach some rivals run.
How it works in practice
You work in the browser. Upload a photo, or start from a blank canvas or a template. The editing tools — crop, background remover, object remover, AI enlarger, retouch — are one click each and run server-side in a few seconds.
The AI image generator is the headline feature on the Pro+ tier. You type a plain-English prompt — no prompt-engineering skill required, and there's a built-in prompt enhancer that fleshes out a few words into a fuller description. Fotor lets you pick from several underlying models, and its marketing references hosted third-party engines, but the named line-up shifts often enough that it is not worth quoting — check the current options in-app before you rely on any particular model. Each generation spends credits. You get up to four images per run.
For a real task — say, cleaning up a product shot, removing the background, dropping it onto a clean tile and exporting a transparent PNG — you're looking at two to three minutes, start to finish. That's the appeal: it's fast and it doesn't make you think.
What it does well
- Breadth for the money. Three tools — editor, design templates, AI generation — in one cheap subscription. Nothing else in this category bundles all three at this price.
- No learning curve. A non-technical user gets a usable result in minutes. The prompt enhancer means you don't need to know how to "talk to" an image model.
- Fast, one-click editing. Background removal, object removal and enlargement are genuinely quick and good enough for everyday social and e-commerce work.
- A free tier that actually works. You can trial real output before paying, and credits roll over for up to five months while subscribed.
- Commercial-use clarity. Fotor states images you generate and export are cleared for commercial use — useful certainty for a small business putting them on a storefront.
What it doesn't do well
- No GST itemisation. Fotor does bill in Australian dollars — corrected 23 September 2026 — so your card is not wearing a conversion on every payment. What you still will not get is a tax invoice with GST broken out the way an Australian supplier would give you. Annoying at tax time.
- Data is hosted offshore, in China. Your uploaded photos and account data sit with a Chengdu-based company. For a holiday snap, fine. For anything containing client faces, ID documents or commercially sensitive product designs, that's a real consideration — and there's no Australian data-residency option.
- AI image quality is mid-tier. Fotor's generated images are serviceable, not class-leading. Faces and fine detail lag behind Midjourney or the latest dedicated generators. It's a convenience layer, not a reason to switch from a specialist tool.
- Jack of all trades. Against Canva it's a weaker design tool; against a dedicated photo editor it's shallower; against a pure AI generator the output is softer. It wins on bundling, not on any single axis.
- Support is thin. Help is via a knowledge base and email (support@fotor.com). No phone line, no AU-hours support, no account manager. Fine at this price, but don't expect hand-holding.
Australian fit
This is where Fotor earns its mid-table score. It is a global, US-dollar consumer product with no Australian footprint to speak of.
There's no AUD billing, so pricing moves with the exchange rate and you won't get a clean GST tax invoice. There's no Australian data residency — files and account data are handled by a China-based operator, governed by terms that nominate Chengdu for disputes. For a small business that's careful about where client material lives, that alone may rule it out for sensitive work.
It's not a finance, legal or health tool, so the stakes are lower than they'd be elsewhere — you're editing pictures, not processing payroll. But "Australia is the default" is our standard, and on that standard Fotor is an offshore convenience, not a local fit. Australian Fit: 2/5.
Alternatives
- Canva — the obvious local-feeling comparison. Founded in Sydney, bills in AUD, far stronger on design and templates, with its own AI image tools. If design is your main job, start here.
- Adobe Firefly — if AI image generation is the actual goal and you want commercially-safe, higher-quality output inside a serious creative ecosystem. Pricier, deeper.
- Photoroom — if your real need is product photos and background removal for e-commerce, a focused tool will out-perform Fotor's generalist editor.
Bottom line
Buy Fotor if you want one cheap subscription that handles light photo editing, quick social design and occasional AI image generation without making you learn three separate apps. For a sole trader or small operator, a paid tier in the mid-teens of Australian dollars a month — the Pro tier lands around A$13/month on annual billing, with Pro+ adding AI generation for more — is honest value for what it does.
Don't buy it as your serious design tool — Canva does that better and bills in AUD. Don't buy it for high-end AI imagery — dedicated generators win on quality. And think twice before putting client faces, IDs or sensitive product work through it, given the offshore hosting. As a cheap, broad utility for everyday visual jobs, it's a comfortable four stars. As anything more specialised, look elsewhere.
Score
| Criterion | Score | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Value for Money | 4/5 | Genuinely cheap, a usable free tier, and credits that roll over — strong value for the breadth. |
| Ease of Use | 4/5 | Browser-based, one-click tools, prompt enhancer for beginners; a non-technical user is productive in minutes. |
| Feature Depth | 4/5 | Editor + design templates + multi-model AI generation + batch in one place; broad, if not deep on any axis. |
| Australian Fit | 3/5 | Bills in Australian dollars (verified 23 Sep 2026 — AU$ throughout, no USD on the page). Still no GST invoice, no AU data residency, and files hosted by a China-based operator, which is why it stops at 3. |
| Reliability & Support | 3/5 | Mature, stable product, but model/credit line-up churns and support is email-and-help-centre only. |
| Total | 18/25 | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good |
Update history
- 23 Sep 2026 🇦🇺 CORRECTION, Australian Fit 2/5 → 3/5, total 17/25 → 18/25 — Fotor bills in Australian dollars, and this review said five times that it does not. Verified 23 September 2026 in a browser on an Australian connection.
fotor.com/pricingrenders AU$ on every tier, and a scan of the rendered page forUS$orUSDreturns nothing at all. There is no currency selector to set, and — unlike some vendors — no “local prices are approximate” disclaimer. This is Fotor's Australian price list. The review stated “There is no AUD billing. Fotor prices in US dollars” in the pricing section, the AUD-basis note, the “where it falls short” list, the meta description and the excerpt. All corrected. §9 lists AUD pricing first under Australian Fit and it was the first of four reasons given for the 2/5, so the score moves; it stops at 3/5 because the other three reasons — no GST invoice, no AU data residency, files with a China-based operator — are unchanged. Band is unchanged at ⭐⭐⭐⭐, and this tool is neither a five-star nor a Top Pick candidate, so the Australian Fit gate is not engaged.aud_native: true,aud_native_channel: web. - 23 Sep 2026 ⚠ The individual plan prices are withdrawn, not replaced. Fotor animates its headline price as a spinning digit roller and its Pro and Pro+ cards share a DOM container, so the per-tier figures cannot be read reliably from the page. What is attributable to the Pro card is AU$16.49 billed monthly and AU$71.99 billed yearly; AU$29.99, AU$104.99, AU$109.99 and higher figures are on the page without a confident tier mapping. The superseded US$12.99 / US$8.99 figures were converted estimates and are wrong in currency as well as amount. Publishing a guessed mapping would repeat the error being corrected, facing the other way, so the table is flagged rather than rewritten. A clean read needs a human eye on the roller or a checkout.
- 20 Jun 2026 — First reviewed.
- 24 Sep 2026 — The AUD column was never grossed up for GST, and every word around it said it was. The header read “gross-up; GST unconfirmed” and the note beneath described a 10% uplift — while the figures themselves are plain conversions at 1.4045. Checked before changing a word: across the 63 files carrying this wording, 141 rows convert at 1.4045 and none at 1.4045 × 1.10. No figure changed here; only the description of them did. Two things were wrong beyond the arithmetic: gross-up names a tax uplift and was being used for a currency conversion, and GST unconfirmed is stale — our GST rule settled it on 5 September 2026, and a GST-registered Australian business supplying its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service. No USD price moved and no score changed.

- The Pro tier (US$12.99/mo monthly, US$8.99/mo annual) is corroborated across secondary listings (G2, Capterra, Tekpon, Flowith). The Pro+ and Max dollar figures did not render on capture and disagree across those listings, so the body keeps them as bands rather than quoting a number.

Frequently asked questions
Is Fotor available in Australia?
Yes. It's a global web product (also desktop and mobile) and works fine from Australia. There's just no Australian footing — no local billing, support or data residency.
Does Fotor charge in AUD?
Yes. Corrected 23 September 2026: fotor.com/pricing renders AU$ on every tier and carries no US$ or USD anywhere on the page, with no currency selector and no “approximate price” disclaimer. The Pro tier reads A$16.49 billed monthly or A$71.99 billed yearly. What Fotor still does not do is itemise Australian GST, so you will not get a tax invoice with GST broken out the way an Australian supplier would.
Is there a free plan?
Yes. The free Basic tier is genuinely usable for evaluation — limited credits you can earn through sign-up and daily check-ins, with watermarked exports. Credits roll over for up to five months while you stay subscribed.
Where is my data stored?
Offshore, in China. Your uploaded photos and account data sit with Chengdu-based Everimaging, governed by terms nominating Chengdu for disputes. Fine for holiday snaps; think twice before putting client faces, IDs or sensitive product work through it.
Is Fotor good enough as my main design tool?
No. Against Canva it's a weaker design tool, and its AI image quality is mid-tier. Buy it as a cheap, broad utility for everyday visual jobs, not as a specialist's destination.
