Canva Magic Studio vs Figma AI for Australians in 2026: Business Owner or Designer?

By Adam · 12 Jun 2026 · 8 min read
Head-to-head verdict

Our pick: Canva Magic Studio. The verdict below says who should buy the other.

Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).

Compared: 12 June 2026

Winner: Canva Magic Studio for most Australians making marketing assets. It scores 19/25 in our review, bills natively in AUD, and carries Australian Fit of 4/5. Figma AI wins for product designers — it scores 18/25 and automates design chores Canva can't touch. Don't buy a Figma seat to make social posts. Don't expect Canva to design your app.

What both tools actually do

This looks like a close match — one point apart on our scoreboard, both ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good, both "AI design tools." It isn't. These two products answer different questions, and which one you need depends on who you are, not which is better.

Canva Magic Studio is the AI layer inside Canva, the design editor built in Sydney that most Australian small businesses already use. Magic Design drafts presentations, videos and social posts from a prompt. Magic Write drafts and rewords copy. Magic Media generates images and short video (the video side is powered by Runway). An editing suite — Background Remover, Magic Edit, Magic Expand, Magic Eraser — handles the cleanup. The output is a finished marketing asset you can publish the same afternoon.

Figma AI is the AI layer inside Figma, the platform product teams use to design software interfaces. It went generally available on 24 July 2025. In the canvas, it renames hundreds of layers in one click, replaces lorem ipsum with realistic copy, generates and edits images on Google's Gemini 3.0 Pro and OpenAI's GPT Image 1, and rewrites or translates interface text. Then there is Figma Make: describe a screen and it returns a working high-fidelity prototype, which can pull styling from your design library and even connect a Supabase backend to ship a small working web app. The output is software design — not a flyer.

So the real question isn't "which AI is smarter." It's "are you making marketing assets, or making a product?"

Pricing in Australia

The pricing gap between these two is really a currency gap, and it matters more than the headline numbers suggest.

Canva prices natively in AUD, GST-inclusive. The Free plan costs nothing and lets you trial every Magic tool. Pro is A$20/month inc GST for an individual; Business is A$28/month inc GST. Both carry a 7-day free trial. There is no exchange-rate margin and no surprise on your card statement — the AUD price is the price. The catch is metering: Magic Write caps at 25 uses on Free and 250 per month on Pro, and image and video generation draw on pooled AI credits that vary by plan. Heavy generators can hit the ceiling mid-month.

Figma prices in US dollars only — the pricing page states "Prices in USD," and there is no AUD billing. A Professional Full seat is USD$16/month, roughly A$22/month ex-GST added at checkout (estimated at an exchange rate of 1.40, with ~10% GST assumed — confirm the GST line on your first invoice). Organization Full runs USD$55/seat/month, about A$77 ex-GST added at checkout, billed annually. Enterprise Full is USD$90/seat/month, about A$126 ex-GST added at checkout, also annual. The Starter plan is free with 500 AI credits a month, capped at 150 a day.

Figma's AI runs on those seat-based credit pools — 3,000 a month on a Professional Full seat. Run dry and an admin can buy more at USD$0.03 per credit (billed in USD, GST added at checkout), with pay-as-you-go reaching the Professional plan in June 2026. Figma Make is the feature most likely to drain the pool.

The value verdict cuts both ways. For a business owner, Canva Pro at A$20/month inc GST is the cheaper, simpler, AUD-billed buy. For a designer already paying for a Figma seat, the AI is effectively a free upgrade to a tool they need anyway. Neither tool is worth buying purely for the AI alone.

Where Canva Magic Studio wins

  • Native AUD billing, GST included. No FX margin, no USD-plus-GST landed-cost arithmetic. In this matchup, only Canva offers that.
  • The easiest on-ramp in the category. We scored Ease of Use 5/5 — a non-technical Australian gets value in minutes, inside an editor most people already know. Figma assumes you can already drive a design tool.
  • It makes the whole asset. Copy, imagery, video, layout and reformatting in one subscription. Figma's AI makes interface design faster; it does not produce your Instagram tile.
  • The safer AI-training posture. Canva trains on your private content only if you opt in, and training is off — and can't be enabled — for business-plan content. Figma's training is ON by default on the Starter and Professional plans most small businesses would use.
  • It's an Australian company. Sydney HQ, AU-first market focus since 2013, and a A$0 free tier that lets you test every Magic tool before paying.

Where Figma AI wins

  • It lives where product work happens. One-click layer renaming, realistic placeholder copy and one-step background removal each kill a real, repeated time-sink in a designer's day.
  • Figma Make is in a different league for prototyping. Prompt to working prototype, design-system-aware, with an optional Supabase backend for a functioning web app. Canva has nothing comparable for product work.
  • Named frontier image models. Image generation and editing run on Gemini 3.0 Pro and GPT Image 1, named on Figma's own AI page. Canva's Magic Media is capable but generalist — we scored Canva's Feature Depth 3/5 against Figma's 4/5.
  • Australian data residency exists — on Enterprise. Figma's localised hosting now lists Australia as a generally available region, Enterprise plan only. Canva offers no AU region at all, on any plan. Neither tool has IRAP, so genuinely regulated work needs care either way.
  • A deeper compliance stack. SOC 2 Type 2, SOC 3, the ISO 27001:2022 family, FedRAMP Authorized and more — beyond Canva's SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001.

Which to pick — decision framework

  • You run a small business, a sole-trader brand or a marketing function, and need socials, decks and flyers: pick Canva Pro at A$20/month inc GST. This is most readers.
  • You're a product designer, UX designer or design-minded founder already working in Figma: use Figma AI — and switch content training off in admin settings on day one if you're on Starter or Professional.
  • You're a founder who needs both marketing assets and an app prototype: run both free tiers. Canva Free for marketing, Figma Starter's 500 monthly credits for product exploration. Pay only where you hit the ceiling.
  • You're in government, health or APRA-regulated work needing AU data residency: Figma Enterprise with the AU region is the only path here — Canva has no AU region. Neither has IRAP, so confirm scope with the vendor first.
  • You want commercially defensible generated imagery at scale: that's a different contest — read our Canva vs Adobe Firefly comparison.

The verdict

Winner: Canva Magic Studio — for the Australian business owner this publication is written for. It does the job most readers actually have: finished marketing assets, fast, in one tool. It bills in Australian dollars, GST included, with no exchange-rate surprise. Its AI-training posture protects you by default. And it clears our Australian Fit gate at 4/5, which Figma at 3/5 does not. Under our methodology, a tool below 4/5 on Australian Fit can't be crowned the pick for Australians.

But Figma AI is not the loser — it's the winner of a different contest. If you design products for a living, Figma's AI is the best in its class for your job. The chore automation is real, and Figma Make is genuinely ahead of anything Canva offers product teams. Just fix the two Australian catches first. Budget for USD billing with GST added at checkout, roughly A$22 a month landed on a Professional Full seat. And turn content training off before client work goes through it.

Choose by who you are. Business owner making marketing: Canva. Designer building products: Figma. If you're unsure which one you are, you're a Canva customer.

Frequently asked questions

Is Canva Magic Studio or Figma AI better for Australian businesses?

Canva Magic Studio, for most. It scores 19/25 with Australian Fit 4/5, bills natively in AUD with GST included, and turns out finished marketing assets fast. Figma AI scores 18/25 and wins only for product designers building software interfaces. If you're unsure which one you are, you're a Canva customer.

How do Canva and Figma AI prices compare in Australia?

Canva prices natively in AUD, GST included — Pro is A$20/month, Business A$28/month. Figma bills in USD only: a Professional Full seat is USD$16/month, roughly A$22/month ex-GST added at checkout. For a business owner, Canva is the cheaper, simpler buy with no exchange-rate surprise on your card statement.

Does Canva or Figma AI store data in Australia?

Only Figma, and only on Enterprise. Figma's localised hosting lists Australia as a generally available region, Enterprise plan only. Canva offers US/EU regions on Enterprise plans and no Australian region at all. Neither tool has IRAP, so genuinely regulated Australian work needs care either way.

Can Figma AI build a working app prototype?

Yes. Figma Make turns a prompt into a working high-fidelity prototype, can pull styling from your design library, and can connect a Supabase backend to ship a small working web app. Canva has nothing comparable for product work — its Magic tools make marketing assets, not software.

Why does Canva win when the scores are only one point apart?

Because of our Australian Fit gate. A tool needs Australian Fit of at least 4/5 to be crowned the pick for Australians. Canva clears it at 4/5; Figma AI sits at 3/5 and does not. Canva also bills in AUD, GST included, and trains on your content only if you opt in.
