Napkin AI Review (2026): Text-to-Diagram Tool, Tested for Australia
- From
- A$13/mo · ex-GST · billed in USD (US$9)
The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.
Skip to the verdictPricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).
The verdict: Napkin AI does one thing, and does it unusually well: you paste a paragraph, click the spark icon, and it turns your words into a clean, editable diagram — a flowchart, a timeline, a process map, a comparison. There is no blank canvas, no drawing, no template-hunting. For anyone who writes more than they design — consultants, founders, marketers, teachers — that is a real time-saver, and the free plan is generous enough to live on. The limits are honest ones. Pricing is in US dollars with no AUD line, hosting is United States only with no Australian region, and the tool still does not let you create on a phone. It is also narrow by design: it makes diagrams from text, not presentations, images or full designs. Within that lane it is one of the best tools going. Score: 18/25 — Very Good.
What it is
Napkin AI is a text-to-visual tool. You give it writing — a paragraph, a list, a set of steps — and it generates a diagram or infographic from it automatically: flowcharts, mind maps, timelines, process diagrams, comparisons, funnels, org charts and data charts among them. The pitch on its own site is "the visual AI for business storytelling," and the workflow matches: you write or paste text, highlight the part you want to illustrate, click the spark icon, and Napkin offers several visual interpretations to choose from. You then refine the result — swapping icons, colours, connectors and fonts — rather than building it from scratch.
The company behind it is Second Layer, Inc., a US firm based in Los Altos, California. The product runs entirely in the browser at app.napkin.ai — there is no software to download. It has been free and widely used through an extended beta, and it is still positioned as a focused single-purpose tool rather than an all-in-one design suite.
The thing to hold onto from the start: Napkin is not Canva and not Gamma. It does not build you a slide deck or a poster or generate photographic images. It turns text into diagrams. Judge it on that, and it scores well. Expect a design suite, and you will be disappointed.
What it costs in Australia
Napkin bills in US dollars on a credit model, where one credit is charged for roughly each word you select for generation. The plans (USD; the pricing page also offers a 25% saving if you pay annually):
| Plan | USD/mo | Approx AUD/mo (ex-GST, ~1.40) | AI credits | Key adds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 500 per week | Unlimited editing; PNG & PDF export; file import; Napkin branding on visuals |
| Plus | US$9/person | ~A$13 | 10,000/month | PPT & SVG export, 3 brand styles, remove Napkin branding, team billing |
| Pro | US$22/person | ~A$31 | 30,000/month | Exclusive designs, unlimited custom branding, upload your own fonts, optional credit top-ups |
| Enterprise | Custom | — | Custom | Contact sales |
A few Australian-specific notes. The AUD figures above are our conversions, not quoted prices — Napkin publishes no AUD and states no GST line of its own, so treat the local cost as the USD rate plus exchange-rate movement plus any GST applied at checkout. The weak Australian dollar adds about 40% over the sticker at 1.4045 (Frankfurter/ECB, 18 September 2026) before GST. Payment is by major credit and debit card, processed through Stripe.
The free plan is the headline, and it is unusually generous: 500 AI credits every week, refreshing each Monday, with unlimited editing and unlimited PNG and PDF export. At about one credit per word, that covers several solid diagrams a week without paying anything — enough that many individual users never need to upgrade. You pay mainly to remove the Napkin watermark, unlock PowerPoint and SVG export, and add custom branding. Credits do not roll over week to week or month to month; the free allowance simply resets.
How it works / features
You write; Napkin draws. What is included:
- Text-to-diagram generation. Highlight text, click the spark, and Napkin proposes several diagram options — flowcharts, timelines, mind maps, process maps, comparisons, funnels, Venn diagrams, org charts and data charts. You pick the one that fits.
- Editable output, not flat images. Generated visuals are fully editable: you can change icons, decorators, connectors, colours and fonts rather than regenerating from scratch.
- Export formats. PNG (at 1x, 2x or 3x) and PDF on every plan, including free; PowerPoint (PPT) and SVG export are paid (Plus and up). You can toggle light or dark mode and remove the background for transparent exports.
- File import on every plan. Bring in existing content as PPT, DOC, PDF, HTML or Markdown and generate visuals from it.
- Branding controls. A Brand Studio lets you set brand colours and fonts; paid tiers add multiple brand styles, unlimited custom branding and the ability to upload your own fonts.
- Collaboration. Teamspaces for inviting and managing members, with real-time editing so several people can work on the same Napkin at once. Paid plans are billed per person who accepts a teamspace invite.
- Sharing. Share visuals or whole Napkins via links; recipients can view the shared content.
On the AI engine, Napkin's own privacy policy names OpenAI and Gemini as the generation subprocessors it uses — so the diagrams are produced by third-party large language models under contract, not a model Napkin trains itself.
What it does well
The core trick genuinely works. Most visual tools start you at a blank canvas, which is exactly where non-designers freeze. Napkin starts from your words and hands you something to refine. For turning a written process, framework or set of steps into a clean diagram, it is faster than anything that makes you draw — often a matter of seconds.
The free plan is one of the most generous in the category. 500 credits a week, refreshing automatically, with unlimited editing and unlimited PNG and PDF export, means a sole operator can do real work without ever paying. That is rare, and it is the right call for a tool people use occasionally.
Output is editable and exports clean. Because results are editable objects rather than flat pictures, you can fix the one wrong label instead of regenerating. SVG and transparent-background export (on paid plans) mean the diagrams drop neatly into slides, docs and websites without a white box around them.
It plays nicely with what you already use. Import from PowerPoint, Word, PDF, HTML or Markdown, and export back out to those formats, makes Napkin a step in an existing workflow rather than another place you have to live.
A clear, honest data position on training. Napkin states it will not use your content to train its own models, holds contractual terms with its AI subprocessors barring them from training on your data, and offers an opt-out of data sharing. For a free tool, that is a more grown-up stance than most.
Where it falls short
It only makes diagrams from text. This is the defining limit. Napkin will not build you a presentation, a social graphic, a logo or a photographic image. If your job needs a finished deck or a designed asset, Napkin is one tool in the chain, not the whole chain — you will still reach for Gamma, Canva or similar to assemble the final piece.
No phone creation. You can view existing Napkins on mobile, but you cannot create or edit on a phone — it is desktop-browser only. That was true when we tested in June 2026, but the help-centre article it was sourced to has since been taken down and Napkin’s rebuilt help centre says nothing about mobile at all, so treat it as unconfirmed until we retest — see Update history, 22 September 2026. For a tool aimed at busy operators, not being able to knock up a diagram on the train is a real gap.
USD pricing and no Australian anything. Prices are in US dollars with no AUD shown and no GST line stated. There is no Australian entity, no local support and nothing in the product tuned to Australian users. It works perfectly well here, but "works here" is not the same as "built for here."
US-only hosting. Napkin's data is hosted on cloud infrastructure in the United States, and your content is transferred to and processed there. There is no Australian or even regional data-residency option. For most marketing diagrams that is a non-issue; for anything drawn from sensitive or regulated material, it is a point to clear before you paste it in.
Credits reset, they do not bank. The free weekly allowance and the paid monthly allowances both reset and do not carry over. Heavy generation sessions can burn through credits faster than you expect, since the charge scales with the amount of text you select. Pro adds optional top-ups, but the lower tiers do not.
Still effectively a beta-era product. Napkin has run free and open for an extended period and only relatively recently layered paid tiers on top. It is stable and widely used, but it is a young, narrow product from a small company — worth weighing if you want to standardise a whole team on it.
Australian fit
Pricing: US dollars, no AUD shown, no GST line stated — confirm the final charge at checkout and budget for the exchange rate. Data residency: United States only; content is processed in the US, with no Australian or regional option, which matters for sensitive material. Support: no Australian entity, presence or local-time support. Availability: fully accessible from Australia, free to sign up, browser-based with no download — but there is nothing Australia-specific in the product, and no phone creation. It is a globally useful tool that Australians can use freely, not an Australian-aware one. Australian Fit: 2/5.
Score
| Criterion | Score | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Value for Money | 4/5 | One of the most generous free plans in the category, and paid tiers are cheap by AI-tool standards — held back only by USD billing and non-rolling credits. |
| Ease of Use | 5/5 | Paste text, click, pick a diagram. There is no faster path from writing to a clean visual for a non-designer. |
| Feature Depth | 3/5 | Excellent at its one job, with editable output, broad import/export and branding controls — but deliberately narrow: no decks, images or full designs, and no phone creation. |
| Australian Fit | 2/5 | No AUD, GST unstated, US-only hosting with no AU residency, no AU support, no local product tuning. |
| Reliability & Support | 4/5 | Stable, browser-based, encrypted in transit and at rest, with a clear no-training data stance — offset by a small vendor, US-only support and a young product. |
| Total | 18/25 |
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good (16–20).
Australian Fit is 2/5, below the 4/5 threshold in our methodology, so Napkin cannot be named a category Top Pick regardless of its score — the raw 18/25 still earns an honest four stars.
Bottom line
If you write more than you design, Napkin is close to essential and costs nothing to try. Turning a written process or framework into a clean, editable diagram is exactly what it is for, and the free plan is generous enough that you can answer the "is this useful to me" question without paying.
If you need finished decks, graphics or images, Napkin is a contributor, not the destination. It makes the diagram; you still assemble the rest in Gamma, Canva or a presentation tool. Treat it as a fast diagram engine that feeds your real design workflow, and it earns its place.
If your diagrams will draw on sensitive or regulated Australian material, the US-only hosting is the point to settle first. For everyday marketing and internal visuals it does not matter; for anything privacy-sensitive, decide whether US processing is acceptable before you paste the source text in.
If you are choosing between Napkin and a presentation tool like Gamma, they are not really rivals — Napkin makes the diagrams, Gamma makes the deck. The honest answer for most people is both: Napkin for the visual, Gamma or Canva to frame it.
Update history
- 22 Sep 2026 — ⚠️ the offline citation was re-pointed; the mobile claim beside it no longer has a live source. Napkin rebuilt its help centre and renumbered every article. The offline answer survives intact at a new ID and is re-pointed. The old article was cited here for "offline/mobile limits", and Napkin’s current help centre contains no article about mobile at all — checked against its full sitemap on 22 September 2026, not just searched. So "you can view existing Napkins on mobile, but you cannot create or edit on a phone", which appears in the limitations section and again in the FAQ and the FAQ schema, currently rests on no live primary source. Not deleted and not quietly softened: the claim is marked in place and named here. It needs a hands-on check on a phone, or a vendor confirmation, before the next publish. The only archive of the dead article predates our check date (15 April 2026) and is context, not evidence. No score moved.
- 21 Sep 2026 — No first-party Napkin AI app on the Australian App Store. Nothing published under napkin.ai. The apps a search returns — Napkin AI - Image Generator, Napkin AI Presentations, Napkin Al Generator Slides (note the capital i standing in for the l) — are published by individuals, one of them declaring a Google Docs link as its website. None is the vendor and none is cited here. USD pricing stands unqualified. Searched Apple's own Australian storefront endpoint (
itunes.apple.com/search?country=au&entity=software) and matched each result on its declaredsellerUrlrather than its publisher name — the method that resolved Msty (CloudStack, LLC → msty.ai) and Bluedot (Twiso Inc. → bluedothq.com) the same day, both of which the 21 September pass had recorded as untraceable. Checked 21 September 2026 by the app-store apply pass,Audits/app-store-apply-2026-09-21.md. Re-check if the vendor announces a mobile app. - 21 Sep 2026 🇦🇺 Currency verified by browser — still USD, and the ladder is unchanged. Read live on an Australian connection at

Every figure and credit allowance in the table above is correct. The page's structured data declarespriceCurrency: USD, and the stringsAUDandA$appear nowhere in the markup — there is no currency selector and no Australian price.aud_native: falseconfirmed. No score change. Source: https://www.napkin.ai/pricing/ · Wayback: capture pending (archive.org unavailable 21 Sep 2026). - 21 Sep 2026 — Corrected a leftover from the retired exchange-rate basis. This review's prose told the reader to expect the Australian dollar to add “roughly 55% over the sticker”, which is the fixed ~1.55 rate our AUD pricing rule retired on 5 September 2026. The figures in the pricing table were re-cut to the live rate by the FX sweep at the time; the sentence describing them was not, so the review has been contradicting its own footnote ever since — one line saying the A$ column was converted at 1.4045, another telling the reader to budget as though it were 1.55. At 1.4045 the uplift is 40.45%, so the sentence now says about 40% and cites the rate and its date inline, as our AUD pricing rule requires. No price, figure or score changes — the table was already correct; only the sentence a reader budgets from was wrong.

Frequently asked questions
What does Napkin AI actually do?
It turns text into editable diagrams and infographics. You paste or write text, highlight a section, click the spark icon, and Napkin generates flowcharts, timelines, mind maps, process maps, comparisons and similar visuals for you to refine. It does not build presentations or generate photographic images.
Is Napkin AI free?
Yes, and the free plan is generous: 500 AI credits per week (refreshing every Monday), unlimited editing, and unlimited PNG and PDF export, with Napkin branding on visuals. Paid plans are Plus at US$9 per person a month and Pro at US$22 per person a month, mainly adding PowerPoint and SVG export, custom branding and the removal of the watermark.
Is Napkin AI's pricing in Australian dollars?
No. Pricing is in US dollars on a credit model (roughly one credit per word generated). Napkin publishes no AUD price and states no GST line of its own — confirm the final charge at checkout and budget for the exchange rate. Our AUD figures are conversions, not quoted prices.
What formats can I export from Napkin AI?
PNG (at 1x, 2x or 3x) and PDF on every plan, including free. PowerPoint (PPT) and SVG export require a paid plan. You can also export with a transparent background and toggle light or dark mode.
Is my data stored in Australia with Napkin AI?
No. Napkin is hosted on US cloud infrastructure, and your content is transferred to and processed in the United States. There is no Australian or regional data-residency option. Napkin states it will not use your content to train its own models, and contractually bars its AI subprocessors from training on it.
Can I use Napkin AI on my phone?
Only to view. You can look at existing Napkins on a mobile device, but creating and editing visuals is desktop-browser only. There is no full mobile app for building diagrams.
