The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.
Skip to the verdictPricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).
Verdict (TL;DR): Dify is the most capable open-source platform for building AI applications, RAG pipelines, and agentic workflows available right now. The self-hosted Community Edition is free, full-featured, and keeps your data onshore — a genuine win for data-conscious Australians. The cloud tier is USD-only and better suited to teams than solo operators. Not beginner-friendly, but technically impressive.

What Dify is
Dify is an open-source LLM application development platform. It combines a visual workflow builder, RAG pipeline tools, multi-agent orchestration, and production monitoring in one place. You build AI applications — chatbots, document analysis tools, agentic workflows, customer support systems — on a canvas, connect them to language models and data sources, and deploy them. The platform handles the infrastructure complexity so you focus on what your application actually does.
Behind Dify is LangGenius, Inc., a company founded in March 2023. In March 2026, Dify announced a USD $30 million Series Pre-A round at a USD $180 million valuation, led by HSG with participation from GL Ventures, 5Y Capital, and others. The platform claims to run on more than 1.4 million machines worldwide and counts Maersk, Novartis, and Anker Innovations among its enterprise customers. It is consistently ranked among GitHub's most-starred open-source repositories.
The open-source code is available at github.com/langgenius/dify under a modified Apache 2.0 licence. The key restrictions: you cannot run Dify as a multi-tenant SaaS product for others without a licence, and you cannot remove Dify's branding from hosted deployments without permission. For most Australian businesses using it internally, neither restriction applies.
What it costs in Australia
Dify has two deployment paths with different economics.
| Plan | USD/workspace/month | USD/workspace/year | Approx AUD/month (ex-GST) | Message credits/month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sandbox | US$0 | — | A$0 | Free tier — testing only |
| Self-hosted Community | US$0 | — | A$0 | Unlimited; you pay your own server and LLM API costs |
| Professional | US$59 | US$590 (saves ~17%) | ~A$83, or ~A$69 annually | 5,000 — 3 members, 50 apps, 500 documents |
| Team | US$159 | US$1,590 (saves ~17%) | ~A$223, or ~A$186 annually | 10,000 — 50 members, 200 apps, 1,000 documents |
| Enterprise | Custom — contact Dify | — | — | Custom |
Read from dify.ai/pricing in a browser on an Australian connection, 24 September 2026 — the monthly figures are unchanged since June; the annual prices and the ~17% saving are new to this review. Dify's page states: "Prices exclude applicable taxes, which may be added at checkout." Converted at US$1 = A$1.4045 (Frankfurter/ECB, 18 September 2026), ex-GST per our GST rule.
Self-hosted Community Edition: Free. Full features, no usage caps imposed by Dify itself. You pay only for your own server and your LLM API calls. A minimal self-host on a VPS (AWS, DigitalOcean, Vultr, etc.) runs roughly AUD $15–40/month depending on resources (estimate). Docker-compose deployment is documented.
Dify Cloud (managed): - Sandbox (free): 200 message credits, 1 team member, 5 apps, 50 documents - Professional: USD $59/month (approximately AUD $83/month ex-GST) — 5,000 message credits/month, 3 team members, 50 apps, 500 documents, 5GB knowledge storage, 20,000 trigger events/month - Team: USD $159/month (approximately AUD $223/month ex-GST) — 10,000 message credits/month, 50 team members, 200 apps, 1,000 documents, 20GB knowledge storage, unlimited trigger events, advanced analytics integrations - Enterprise: Custom pricing
Message credits cover Dify's hosted model usage. If you bring your own API keys (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.), those costs are separate.
All pricing is in USD. No AUD billing. GST applies on top for Australian businesses — the figures above are indicative; verify at dify.ai/pricing before purchasing. Exchange rate used: US$1 ≈ A$1.40 (September 2026).
The Professional plan's 5,000 message credits and 3-seat cap limits its value for teams. Most serious Australian deployments using the cloud product will need Team or Enterprise, which is a meaningful expense.
How it works in practice
Dify's core is a visual canvas where you assemble AI workflows. Drag in a language model node, connect it to a knowledge base (Dify ingests PDFs, Word documents, web pages, and more), add tool-calling nodes for web search or API calls, configure agent logic with conditional branching, and deploy. The platform generates an API, an embeddable chat widget, and access to conversation logs and performance analytics.
The RAG pipeline is Dify's standout feature. Upload a set of documents — a product manual, a legal contract, a collection of support tickets — and Dify handles extraction, chunking, embedding, and storage in its vector database. Query it conversationally and the system retrieves relevant chunks to inform the model's response. This is the core of document Q&A, knowledge base chatbots, and research tools.
Multi-agent workflows let you chain models together: one agent researches, another summarises, a third formats the output. Dify supports both LLM function-calling and ReAct-style agents. It integrates 50-plus built-in tools including web search, DALL-E, Stable Diffusion, and WolframAlpha.
Monitoring and observability are better than most competitors. Dify logs every conversation, tracks model performance over time, and integrates with Langfuse and Langsmith for teams that want deeper tracing. In production, this matters.
The learning curve is real. An afternoon gets you a basic chatbot. A production-grade RAG pipeline over a large document corpus takes days of tuning — chunk size, overlap, retrieval strategy, reranking. This is not a tool you can hand to a non-technical team member and expect results.
What it does well
RAG pipeline depth. Dify's document processing and knowledge retrieval is the most complete implementation in any open-source tool at this tier. It handles PDFs, PowerPoints, web scraping, and more, with configurable chunking and multiple vector database integrations.
Multi-model support. Connect to OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Mistral, locally-hosted Ollama models, Azure OpenAI, and dozens more. You switch providers in the settings panel; the rest of your workflow is unchanged.
Self-hosting is production-grade. Docker-compose deployment is documented and works. The Community Edition has no artificial feature limits compared to the cloud product — this is genuinely unusual and generous.
LLMOps and monitoring. Dify logs conversations, tracks costs per API call, and supports continuous improvement through production annotations. Most no-code tools ignore observability entirely; Dify takes it seriously.
Active open-source community. 1.4 million self-hosted installations and a GitHub repository with regular commits signals this project is not going to disappear. The $30M raise in March 2026 further de-risks it.
App templates and ecosystem. Dify ships with pre-built templates for common use cases — customer support bots, document Q&A, SQL query generators — that reduce build time considerably.
What it doesn't do well
Steeper learning curve than marketed. Dify markets itself as accessible to non-technical users. In practice, getting meaningful output from a RAG pipeline requires understanding embeddings, vector search, and prompt engineering. The gap between "I launched a chatbot" and "I have a production-ready application" is large.
Cloud pricing is team-oriented. The free Sandbox tier is too restricted for anything beyond testing. The Professional plan's 3-seat limit and 5,000 monthly message credits are tight for a real deployment. You'll reach Team pricing ($159/month USD) quickly in a business context.
USD-only billing. No AUD pricing. No local billing support. Australian businesses pay in USD, absorb currency risk, and add GST manually. The cloud product is treated as an imported digital service — 10% GST applies.
No confirmed Australian cloud data centre. Dify Cloud does not publish data centre locations by region (contact business@dify.ai to confirm where Australian data is stored). For sensitive business data, assume US-hosted unless confirmed otherwise.
Multi-tenant SaaS restriction. The modified Apache 2.0 licence prohibits running Dify as a multi-tenant SaaS platform for other customers without a separate licence. Relevant only if you plan to build a product on top of Dify and sell it to others — but worth understanding before you commit.
Agentic AI caution. Dify's multi-agent workflows can chain together actions with real-world consequences — updating databases, sending requests to external APIs, generating and publishing content. These pipelines need deliberate human-in-the-loop checkpoints. Dify supports them, but building safe agentic workflows requires intentional design. Don't assume the agent knows its own limits.
Australian fit
The self-hosting case for Australia is strong. Deploy Dify Community Edition on AWS ap-southeast-2 (Sydney), an Australian-region VPS, or your own on-premises infrastructure, and all data — documents, conversations, model outputs, user queries — stays in Australia. For healthcare, legal, financial services, or government-adjacent applications, this matters significantly under Australian Privacy Principles.
The cloud product is murkier. Dify does not publish Australian data centre availability. Contact their team at business@dify.ai to confirm before using the cloud version for any client or sensitive business data.
On the enterprise side, Dify has raised serious capital and has real enterprise customers. An Australian organisation wanting a supported, enterprise-licensed self-hosted deployment can negotiate directly. The $30M raise in March 2026 suggests the company has resources to support it.
The audience fit is narrower than general-purpose tools. Dify suits a developer at an Australian business, a technical IT team, or a consulting shop building AI solutions. A sole trader or small business owner without technical staff will struggle to get value without professional implementation help.
Australian Fit score: 3/5. Self-hosting on Australian infrastructure is excellent for data residency. Cloud data centre location is unconfirmed. USD-only billing. Narrowly developer-facing. Loses points for the non-technical audience, but gains them back for the data sovereignty path.
Alternatives
- Flowise: the closest open-source rival until Workday wound it down — end of life 31 August 2026, repository archived, Apache 2.0 code left behind. Not an option for new builds. What happened and what to do.
- n8n (review): Open-source workflow automation with a growing AI layer. Better for app-to-app automation with AI steps; Dify is better for AI-first workflows and RAG. Also self-hostable.
- Relevance AI (review): Australian-founded, cloud-native, more polished onboarding, no self-hosting. Better for non-technical business operators; less customisable than Dify.
Bottom line
Dify is the most feature-complete open-source AI application platform available to Australian builders today. The Community Edition is free, fully functional, and self-hostable — meaning you can run sophisticated RAG pipelines, multi-agent workflows, and LLM applications on Australian infrastructure at minimal cost. The $30M funding round and 1.4 million installs confirm this is not a side project.
The audience is technical. Non-developers will need implementation support to get value. The cloud tier's USD pricing and unconfirmed data centre location add friction for data-sensitive Australian organisations. But for a developer, a technical product team, or a consulting firm building AI applications for clients, Dify is one of the best tools in this category, open-source or otherwise.
Self-host it in Sydney, point it at your preferred models, and you have a production-grade AI application platform for infrastructure cost plus LLM API fees.

- 28 Sep 2026 — verified USD by browser. dify.ai/pricing on an Australian connection, 28 September: Sandbox free, Community free, Enterprise custom, and Professional and Team priced in a bare-dollar animated counter the page renders digit by digit, so today's figures were not machine-readable; the same page was read in a browser on an Australian connection on 24 September (US$59 / US$159 monthly, US$590 / US$1,590 annually, noted in the pricing section) and nothing on the page suggests a change since. "Prices exclude applicable taxes, which may be added at checkout" still stands. No
A$anywhere.aud_native: falsestands. No score change. - 21 Sep 2026 — Two “inc. GST” gross-ups removed from the cloud pricing list: Professional's ~AUD $91 and Team's ~AUD $245. The ex-GST figures printed beside them — AUD $83 and AUD $223 — were already correct at USD→AUD 1.4045 (ECB reference rate, 18 September 2026) and are unchanged, so each plan had two Australian prices and the higher one asserted a tax most of our readers do not pay. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; an unregistered buyer should allow ~10% on top. No USD price moved and no score changed. dify.ai/pricingin a browser: Professional US$59/month and Team US$159/month, both exactly as this review had them, and both AUD conversions divide out at 1.4045. New here: the annual prices, US$590 and US$1,590 per workspace per year — a ~17% saving this review never mentioned, which is a real difference to a small Australian team choosing a billing term. Also recorded: Dify's own note that “prices exclude applicable taxes, which may be added at checkout”. ⚠ Method note: the prices render as an animated digit reel, so a text extract of the page returns columns of 0–9 rather than a figure — they are legible only in a screenshot. Frequently asked questions
Is Dify free to use in Australia?
The self-hosted Dify Community Edition is free, with no feature restrictions. You pay only for your own server infrastructure and your LLM API costs (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.). The managed Dify Cloud starts free with a very limited Sandbox tier, then USD $59/month for the Professional plan (approximately AUD $83 ex-GST at June 2026 rates).
Can I run Dify in Australia to keep my data onshore?
Yes. The Dify Community Edition is self-hostable via Docker on any infrastructure, including Australian cloud regions such as AWS ap-southeast-2 in Sydney. All data stays within your chosen environment. The managed Dify Cloud does not publish Australian data centre locations — contact business@dify.ai to confirm before using it for sensitive data.
Is Dify suitable for non-technical Australian business owners?
Not without support. Dify's visual canvas is approachable, but building effective RAG pipelines and agentic workflows requires understanding of LLM concepts — embeddings, chunking, tool-calling, prompt engineering. Non-technical users will need a developer to implement and maintain it. For a no-code-friendly alternative, consider Relevance AI, which is Australian-founded and designed for business operators.
