The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.

Verdict (TL;DR): CrewAI is the world's most widely used open-source multi-agent framework — 54,000+ GitHub stars, deployed by 63% of the Fortune 500 by CrewAI's own count. The self-hosting option is a genuine plus for Australian data-sovereignty needs. But this is a developer tool first. If your team can't write Python, the managed cloud platform's free tier offers just 50 executions per month and the enterprise path requires a custom sales conversation. Non-technical Australian SMBs should look elsewhere.

What CrewAI is

CrewAI is an open-source Python framework for building and orchestrating multi-agent AI workflows — systems where multiple AI agents with different roles collaborate to complete complex tasks. Think one agent that researches, one that drafts, one that reviews: they hand work between themselves just like a team.

The project was created in 2023 by João Moura and released under the MIT licence. It has since grown into one of the most significant agent-infrastructure projects on GitHub, with more than 54,000 stars as of mid-2026. The framework itself is free and freely forkable. CrewAI Inc, the company, sits alongside it with a managed cloud product (CrewAI AMP at app.crewai.com) and an enterprise tier.

The core model:

  • Open-source framework — Python library, install via pip, run on any infrastructure. You bring your own LLM API keys (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, local models via Ollama, etc.). No platform fees. Complete data control.
  • CrewAI cloud (Free tier) — hosted visual studio, 50 workflow executions per month, GitHub integration, no cost. Limited for production use.
  • CrewAI Enterprise — custom-priced, dedicated VPC or customer infrastructure, SSO, RBAC, dedicated support, on-site training, 50 hours of development assistance per month.

The framework handles agent role assignment, task delegation, memory, tool use, and the orchestration layer so developers don't have to rebuild that from scratch.

What it costs in Australia

Open-source (self-hosted): Free. Zero platform cost. You pay only for the LLM API calls your agents make — billed by OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, or whoever's model you use. There is no AUD billing issue because there is no billing from CrewAI.

CrewAI Basic (cloud, free): USD $0/month. 50 executions/month. Suitable for experimentation only.

CrewAI Enterprise: Custom pricing, contact sales. No publicly listed AUD figure. Third-party analysis suggests mid-market contracts run in the range of (estimate) USD $50,000–$120,000/year for managed deployments at scale — but this is not confirmed by CrewAI directly. Australian enterprises should request a quote from crewai.com.

Hidden cost: Every deployment — cloud or self-hosted — requires you to supply your own LLM API keys. At scale, token costs frequently exceed any platform fee. Budget for both.

GST treatment: as a US-based SaaS provider with no Australian entity listed, enterprise subscriptions billed to Australian businesses are likely subject to the GST reverse-charge mechanism. Confirm with your accountant.

How it works in practice

The open-source path: you install the crewai Python package, define your agents (each with a role, goal, and backstory), assign them tools (web search, file read, API calls), create tasks, wire them into a Crew, and run it. The output is a pipeline of agent actions. You deploy it wherever Python runs — a server, AWS Lambda, your own laptop.

The cloud path: log in to app.crewai.com, use the visual studio to build a workflow, connect your LLM keys, and run. The visual editor reduces the Python requirement for orchestration design, but you still need to understand agents conceptually and configure integrations technically.

CrewAI's strengths in practice:

  • Role-based agent design — assigning each agent a clear persona (Researcher, Writer, QA) produces more coherent multi-step outputs than single-agent prompting.
  • Human-in-the-loop — you can pause a workflow and require human approval before an agent takes an action. This is important for anything touching live systems.
  • Tracing and observability — OpenTelemetry integration means you can see exactly what each agent did, which prompt fired, and what the output was.
  • Bring-your-own-model — run Claude, GPT-4o, Gemini, Mistral, or a locally hosted model. You are not locked to a single provider.
  • MCP export — you can export a CrewAI workflow as a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, making it callable by other AI tools.

What it does well

The self-hosting case is genuinely strong. For Australian organisations with data-sovereignty requirements — government, healthcare, finance — the ability to run the entire CrewAI stack on your own infrastructure, with your own LLMs (including local models that never touch the internet), is a real advantage. No data leaves your perimeter unless you configure it to.

The MIT licence matters. Unlike proprietary platforms, you are not locked in. You can fork it, modify it, audit it, and move it. That kind of long-term risk management is worth something to Australian enterprises building serious infrastructure.

Community and ecosystem depth. 54,000 GitHub stars is not marketing. There are active forums, regular releases, and a large body of tutorials and community contributions. If something breaks, someone has probably already documented the fix.

Telemetry is anonymised and opt-out. CrewAI collects anonymous usage data but explicitly does not collect prompts, agent descriptions, tool outputs, API responses, or environment variables. You can disable it entirely with one environment variable.

Multi-agent orchestration at scale. The sequential, hierarchical, and consensual crew patterns let you model real-world business processes — not just run a single AI call.

What it doesn't do well

This is not a no-code tool. The visual studio helps, but building anything production-useful requires Python proficiency. A Melbourne business owner who is not a developer will not get meaningful value from CrewAI without hiring someone who is. The 50-execution free tier of the cloud platform is too limited to test at any realistic scale.

The managed cloud free tier is almost vestigial. Fifty executions per month is enough to run a demo, not a business workflow. The jump from free to enterprise is steep, with no published middle tier.

Debugging agent chains is painful. When a five-agent pipeline fails, tracing the error to the responsible agent requires patience. Observability tooling helps, but it adds setup overhead.

No native no-code integrations to common Australian business tools. There is no built-in connector to Xero, MYOB, or common AU-market SaaS. Everything is custom tooling via Python.

Context window management across agents. Long workflows can exhaust model context windows, causing later agents to lose early-task context. This requires careful design.

Australian fit

Data residency: This is where CrewAI's open-source architecture genuinely shines. Self-host the framework on AWS Sydney (ap-southeast-2), Azure Australia East, or your own on-premises hardware and your data does not leave Australia — ever. Pair with a locally hosted LLM (Ollama running Llama or Mistral) and you have a fully onshore pipeline. For regulated sectors under the Australian Privacy Principles, this is a credible path.

The managed cloud product hosts on CrewAI's US infrastructure by default. Enterprise customers can negotiate dedicated VPC deployment, which opens the door to an Australian region — but this requires a custom contract.

Currency: No AUD pricing. The open-source path has no billing. Enterprise is custom-quoted.

GST: Unclear without a formal quote. Assume GST applies via reverse-charge for Australian enterprise customers.

AU support: No Australian office or dedicated local support. US-timezone support team. Enterprise contracts include private Slack/Teams channels and on-site support, but "on-site" means US-based staff travelling.

Agentic AI caution: Deploying agents that take autonomous actions — sending emails, updating databases, calling APIs — carries real risk. CrewAI's human-in-the-loop feature is valuable, but you must configure it deliberately. Agents that act autonomously on live systems should be supervised and tested in staging environments before production. Under the Privacy Act 1988, if agents process personal information, your organisation remains responsible for how that data is handled — including data passed to third-party LLMs via API.

Alternatives

If CrewAI's developer requirements are a barrier, these published AID reviews cover closer-to-no-code options:

  • Relevance AI — Sydney-founded, Australian data hosting, no-code agent builder. Our current Top Pick for the AI Agent Builders category.
  • n8n — open-source workflow automation with a visual editor. Self-hostable for AU data control, lower developer requirement than CrewAI.
  • Gumloop — no-code AI workflow builder aimed at non-technical users. Less powerful for multi-agent orchestration, but far more accessible.

If your team has developer capability and wants open-source flexibility, also look at Dify (reviewed: review-dify-australia-2026-06-26) — a visual interface over open-source agent infrastructure. Flowise, the other obvious candidate, was wound down by Workday on 31 August 2026 and is no longer an option for new builds.

Bottom line

CrewAI is impressive engineering. If you have Python developers and you want the most flexible, auditable, self-hostable multi-agent framework available, it deserves serious consideration — and the data-sovereignty story for Australian regulated industries is genuinely strong. But if you are a business owner without a dev team, this is not your tool. The cloud free tier is too limited for real use, and the enterprise path requires a custom contract conversation. For non-technical Australian teams, start with Relevance AI or MindStudio.

Australian Fit gate: AU Fit 3/5 — does not clear the ≥4/5 gate for ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent or Top Pick. Raw score would be 15/25.

Update history
  • 30 Sep 2026 — re-verified by browser; negative confirmed, nothing priced. crewai.com/pricing on an Australian connection: Basic is free (visual editor, GitHub integration, 50 workflow executions a month) and Enterprise is custom (SSO, RBAC, your own VPC or infrastructure, 45-day onboarding). No dollar figure in any currency, no A$ or USD string. The free cloud tier is now named Basic; renamed here. A footnote said figures were "inclusive of GST at 1.10 where noted"; none were, and it now reads ex-GST. The third-party Enterprise estimate stays labelled as an estimate. aud_native: false already set. The directory tile was blank; pinned price_from: "Free" (open source and the Basic cloud plan are both free). Score unchanged. Frequently asked questions

Is CrewAI free to use in Australia?

The open-source CrewAI Python framework is free under the MIT licence — you self-host it and pay only for LLM API calls. The managed cloud platform has a free tier limited to 50 workflow executions per month. Enterprise cloud pricing is custom-quoted with no published AUD figure.

Can CrewAI keep data in Australia?

Yes — if you self-host the open-source framework on Australian infrastructure (such as AWS Sydney or Azure Australia East) and use locally hosted LLM models, your data never leaves Australia. The managed cloud product runs on US infrastructure by default, though enterprise customers can negotiate dedicated VPC deployment.

Do I need to be a developer to use CrewAI?

In practice, yes. The core framework is a Python library and requires coding ability to build production workflows. The cloud visual studio reduces — but does not eliminate — that requirement. Non-technical users looking to build AI agents without code should consider Relevance AI, MindStudio, or Gumloop instead.
