The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.

The verdict: Pipedream is an exceptionally capable automation platform — 3,000+ app integrations, support for Node.js, Python, Go and Bash, and a genuinely useful free tier. But it is built for developers and technical teams, not for the Melbourne café owner or the Sydney financial planner trying to save time. Add the Workday acquisition uncertainty, US-only data hosting, USD-only billing, and no GST invoice support, and Australian small businesses are better served elsewhere. Score: 15/25 — Good.

What it is

Pipedream is a cloud-based workflow automation and API integration platform. It lets you connect apps and services — Slack, Gmail, HubSpot, Stripe, Airtable, and thousands more — and build automated workflows that trigger when something happens in one app and take action in another.

Think of it as a code-first version of Zapier. Where Zapier gives you a drag-and-drop interface designed for non-technical users, Pipedream gives you a code editor. Every workflow step can be extended with real JavaScript, Python, Go, or Bash. Pre-built action components handle common tasks without coding, but the platform assumes you know what an API is — and that you're comfortable editing one.

The platform was founded by Tod Sacerdoti and is headquartered in San Francisco. In November 2025, Workday — the HR and finance software giant — signed a definitive agreement to acquire Pipedream, with the deal closing by January 2026. As of June 2026, Pipedream continues to operate as a standalone product, but the roadmap is shifting toward Workday's enterprise HR and finance use cases.

The core pitch is developer-first automation with AI agent capabilities. Pipedream's MCP (Model Context Protocol) Server exposes over 10,000 tools across 3,000+ apps to AI agents, allowing those agents to trigger actions across business systems. It is one of the more technically sophisticated platforms in the AI automation space.

What it costs in Australia (AUD, GST unconfirmed)

Pipedream bills in USD only. There is no AUD pricing option. The prices below are converted at approximately ×1.40. GST treatment is unconfirmed: Pipedream does not publish GST information for Australian customers, and its billing documentation makes no reference to Australian tax obligations. Treat the AUD figures as a currency conversion only, and check your own invoice at signup for whether 10% GST is applied.

Plan USD/month (billed annually) Approx AUD/month (ex-GST) Credits/month Active Workflows Connected Accounts Key limits
Free US$0 A$0 100 3 3 5-min execution limit; community support only
Basic US$29 (US$45 monthly) ~A$41 2,000 10 5 1-minute schedule interval
Advanced US$49 (US$74 monthly) ~A$69 2,000 Unlimited Unlimited 1-second schedule interval; GitHub Sync; dedicated Slack support
Connect US$99 (US$150 monthly) ~A$139 10,000 Unlimited Unlimited Pipedream Connect in production; auth for 100 external users, then US$2 each
Business Custom Custom Custom Unlimited Unlimited Volume pricing, HIPAA workloads, uptime SLAs, dedicated Slack support

How credits work: One credit equals 30 seconds of compute time at 256MB of memory. A workflow that runs in 3 seconds uses roughly 0.1 credits. Fast, lightweight workflows are cheap. Slow, memory-intensive ones eat through your allowance. Unused credits do not roll over month to month.

Annual billing: The prices in the table are annual rates (US$348, US$588 and US$1,188 a year). Month to month, Basic is US$45, Advanced US$74 and Connect US$150 — so paying yearly now saves about a third. (Re-read in a browser 30 September 2026.)

GST: Pipedream publishes no GST information for Australian customers, and we could not confirm whether 10% GST is added at checkout. Australian businesses should check their invoice at signup and keep it for their BAS.

Free tier reality check: 100 credits per month is approximately 50 minutes of total execution time. Enough for testing and light personal use. Not enough for any business relying on regular automated workflows.

How it works / features

Pipedream organises work into workflows. Each workflow has a trigger — something that starts the process — and a series of steps that execute in response.

Triggers include HTTP webhooks (another service sends data to Pipedream), scheduled timers (run every 15 minutes, every day at 9am, etc.), and app-specific events (a new row in Google Sheets, a new customer in Stripe, a new email in Gmail).

Steps are where the work happens. You can use pre-built action components — Pipedream ships actions for hundreds of common tasks across thousands of apps — or write your own code from scratch. The code environment supports Node.js, Python, Go, and Bash. There is no premium tier required to unlock code; it is available from the free plan.

The platform added significant AI capabilities in 2024 and 2025. AI steps let you call language models (OpenAI, Anthropic, and others) directly inside a workflow. You can pass data from earlier steps to an AI model, get a structured response, and use that response in subsequent steps. This makes it practical to build workflows like: "When a new support ticket arrives, summarise it with AI, check the customer's history in HubSpot, and draft a reply in Gmail."

Pipedream Connect is a separate product layer for software companies that want to embed Pipedream's integration catalogue into their own products. It is not relevant to most small business users.

The MCP Server capability — exposing the full integration catalogue to AI agents — is genuinely innovative. It allows an AI agent built on Claude or GPT-4 to trigger real actions across 3,000+ business apps. For businesses building AI agents into their operations, this is a meaningful differentiator.

At the time of this review, Pipedream lists integrations with over 3,000 apps including Slack, HubSpot, Salesforce, Stripe, Shopify, Airtable, Google Workspace, Notion, Jira, GitHub, and many others.

What it does well

Integration depth is exceptional. 3,000+ apps with 10,000+ pre-built action components is one of the largest catalogues in the market. For developers who need to connect niche APIs — not just the mainstream tools — Pipedream is hard to beat.

Code-first flexibility. Most automation platforms treat code as an escape hatch, reluctantly added for edge cases. Pipedream treats it as the primary interface. When you need to transform data, apply business logic, or handle an API quirk, you just write the code. No workarounds, no limitations.

AI agent integration. The MCP Server and native AI steps make Pipedream one of the more sophisticated platforms for building agentic workflows — automations where AI makes decisions mid-process, not just summarises at the end. This is genuinely ahead of Zapier and most visual-first competitors.

The free tier is real. 100 credits per month with access to all features — including code steps and pre-built actions — is a legitimate starting point. Testing workflows costs nothing. You will hit the limits quickly for business use, but the onboarding experience is not artificially crippled.

Credit-based pricing is fair for developers. A fast 2-second workflow costs almost nothing. A complex, memory-intensive job costs more. If you optimise your workflows — which developers do — the effective cost per automation run is well below what per-task pricing models like Zapier charge.

Where it falls short

It is not built for non-developers. Pipedream's interface assumes technical literacy. The visual builder exists, but it is not the primary design surface the way it is in Make or Zapier. Setting up a trigger requires understanding webhook concepts. Debugging a broken step often means reading raw JSON and error logs. A Melbourne small business owner without coding experience will get stuck quickly.

The Workday acquisition creates real uncertainty. Workday acquired Pipedream to serve its enterprise HR and finance customer base — Workday reports more than 70 million users under contract for payroll and people management. The roadmap is moving toward those use cases. Several third-party observers have noted that development is shifting away from the developer-friendly, general-purpose automation that made Pipedream attractive. For a small business evaluating a long-term automation tool, buying into a platform mid-acquisition is a risk.

No Australian data hosting. All Pipedream infrastructure runs on AWS in the us-east-1 region in the United States. There is no Australian or Asia-Pacific region. Any data processed through your workflows — customer details, financial records, email content — is processed in the US. For businesses handling sensitive client information, this matters.

USD billing with no AUD option. You pay in US dollars. Your credit card is charged in USD, with currency conversion fees applied by your bank or card provider. There is no AUD billing option.

Credit limits are tight on entry plans. The Basic (US$29/~A$41) and Advanced (US$49/~A$69) plans both include 2,000 credits per month. If your workflows run frequently or involve heavy compute, you can exhaust 2,000 credits faster than you expect. The next meaningful credit increase requires the Business plan at US$99/~A$139 per month — a significant jump.

Free tier is too limited for real business use. 100 credits and 3 workflows is a trial, not a starter plan. Most businesses will need a paid plan from day one of production use.

No rollover on unused credits. Credits expire at month end regardless of whether you used them. If your business has lumpy automation needs — heavy in some months, light in others — you are paying for capacity you may not use.

Australian fit

Pipedream's Australian fit is weak. Here is the direct assessment:

AUD pricing: No. Billing is in USD only. At ~A$41/month for the Basic plan, you are also paying your bank's foreign currency conversion fee on top of the stated price.

GST treatment: Unconfirmed. Pipedream does not publish GST information for Australian customers, and we could not confirm whether 10% GST is added at checkout. There is no reference to Australian tax on the pricing page or in the documentation.

Data residency: Poor. All data is processed and stored in the United States (AWS us-east-1). There is no Australian or APAC region. For businesses processing sensitive customer data under the Australian Privacy Act, particularly those holding personal information about clients, this warrants legal review before committing.

Australian support: No dedicated AU support. The free tier provides community forum access only. The Advanced plan adds a dedicated Slack channel with the support team — based in the US, with US business hours. The time-zone gap is real.

AU-aware outputs: Not applicable. Pipedream processes data you feed it. It does not generate Australian-specific outputs or apply Australian context in any meaningful way.

Post-acquisition uncertainty: The Workday acquisition is a legitimate concern for any Australian business evaluating Pipedream. Workday's core customer base is large US and global enterprise — the kind of business that signs seven-figure annual contracts. Pipedream's future pricing and product direction will serve that base first.

Score

Criterion Score Why
Value for Money 3/5 Free tier is real but limited. Paid plans are priced fairly for developers who optimise, but the step from 2,000 credits to Connect's 10,000 is steep. USD billing adds cost for Australians.
Ease of Use 2/5 Code-first design is a genuine barrier for non-technical users. Pre-built actions help, but debugging, webhook setup, and JSON handling require technical confidence.
Feature Depth 5/5 3,000+ integrations, 10,000+ action components, native AI steps, MCP Server, multi-language code support. Feature depth leads the category for developers.
Australian Fit 2/5 USD billing, US-only data hosting, no GST transparency, no AU support hours, Workday acquisition uncertainty. Two of five is generous.
Reliability & Support 3/5 SOC 2 Type II certified, AES-256 encryption, solid infrastructure on AWS. But free-tier community-only support, US business hours, and acquisition uncertainty weigh against it.
Total 15/25

★★★ Good

Australian Fit gate note: Australian Fit score is 2/5, which is below the ≥ 4/5 gate required for ★★★★★ Excellent. Even if the raw score warranted five stars, the gate would cap the display at four. See our review methodology for how the Australian Fit gate works.

Bottom line

If you are a developer or technical founder building AI agents, complex automations, or embedded integration products, Pipedream is one of the strongest tools in its class. The integration catalogue, code flexibility, and MCP capabilities justify the pricing. Go in with eyes open about the Workday acquisition and data residency.

If you are a small business owner without coding skills, Pipedream is the wrong tool. The learning curve is steep, support is slow across time zones, and the alternatives — Zapier or Make — are substantially easier to use for the same common automation jobs. Start there.

If you handle sensitive client data — medical, legal, financial — you need to think carefully before running that data through a US-hosted platform. Pipedream does not offer an Australian or APAC data region. Get legal advice before signing up.

If you are evaluating this for the long term, the Workday acquisition is a genuine strategic risk. Pipedream's roadmap is shifting toward Workday's enterprise HR and finance ecosystem. General-purpose automation for SMBs is not where Workday competes. That does not mean Pipedream will disappear — but it does mean the product you sign up for today may not be the product it becomes.

  • 30 Sep 2026 — re-verified by browser; the headline prices are annual, and the US$99 tier is now Connect. pipedream.com/pricing ("All prices in USD") on an Australian connection: Basic US$29, Advanced US$49 and Connect US$99 a month billed annually; month to month they are US$45, US$74 and US$150. The review called these monthly prices and said annual billing gave no discount; it saves about a third. The US$99 tier is now Connect (for developer integrations); Business is custom; Basic allows 5 connected accounts, not 10. Table, annual-billing note, VfM note and the currency FAQ (body and schema) updated. Bare figures, no A$. aud_native: false already set. Score unchanged. • 24 Sep 2026 — The AUD column was never grossed up for GST, and every word around it said it was. The header read “gross-up; GST unconfirmed” and the note beneath described a 10% uplift — while the figures themselves are plain conversions at 1.4045. Checked before changing a word: across the 63 files carrying this wording, 141 rows convert at 1.4045 and none at 1.4045 × 1.10. No figure changed here; only the description of them did. Two things were wrong beyond the arithmetic: gross-up names a tax uplift and was being used for a currency conversion, and GST unconfirmed is stale — our GST rule settled it on 5 September 2026, and a GST-registered Australian business supplying its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service. No USD price moved and no score changed. reviewed: untouched per our dating rule.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pipedream available in Australia?

Yes — it's a cloud platform that works fine in Australia, but it's San Francisco-based with no AU office and no dedicated Australian support. The free tier is community-forum only; even paid support runs on US business hours, so the time-zone gap is real.

Does Pipedream charge in AUD?

No. Pipedream bills in USD only with no AUD option, so you'll also pay your bank's currency-conversion fee on top. GST treatment is unconfirmed — check your invoice at signup. Basic is US$29/month billed annually (~A$41; US$45 month to month); Connect is US$99/month annually (~A$139) and Business is custom.

Is there a free plan or free trial?

Yes — a real free tier with 100 credits a month (about 50 minutes of execution), 3 workflows and full feature access including code steps. It's fine for testing and light personal use, but too limited for any business relying on regular automated workflows.

Where is my data hosted?

In the United States only — all Pipedream infrastructure runs on AWS us-east-1, with no Australian or APAC region. Any customer details, financial records or email content in your workflows is processed in the US. Businesses handling sensitive data under the Privacy Act should get legal advice first.

Should an Australian small business use Pipedream?

Only if you have technical staff. It's code-first by design and one of the strongest tools for developers building AI agents and complex automations. Non-technical owners will get stuck — Zapier or Make are substantially easier for the same common jobs.
