Activepieces Review Australia 2026: Is the Open-Source Zapier Worth It?
- From
- A$28/mo · ex-GST · billed in USD
The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.
Skip to the verdictPricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).
Verdict (TL;DR): Activepieces is the most honest pricing model in workflow automation — you pay per active flow, not per task, so a flow that runs 10,000 times costs the same as one that runs once. For an Australian small business sick of Zapier's task-metering, that alone is worth a look. The AI agents and 280+ integrations are genuine, and you can self-host the free MIT-licensed edition on your own server to sidestep the data-residency problem entirely. The catch: cloud billing is USD-only, there's no published Australian data residency, and the slick per-flow pricing only stays cheap if you keep your flow count low.

| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | US$0, no card | 100 credits a day, unlimited flows, agents, tables, MCP and API access |
| Plus | US$20 flat per month (~A$28) | 3× Free, no daily cap, then pay as you go, up to 5 users, bring your own AI keys |
| Team | US$200 flat per month (~A$281) | 5× Plus, unlimited projects, 25 users, SSO, global connections |
| Ultimate | Custom — talk to sales | Credits sized to you, dedicated workers, execution priority, SCIM |
This is a change of cost model, not of number, and it matters most to the reader this publication is written for. Under the old scheme a small operator running three or four flows paid almost nothing and scaled linearly; under the new one the entry is a flat US$20 whatever you run, and the free tier is capped by a daily credit allowance rather than a flow count. Cheap for someone with many flows, dearer for someone with two. Currency: the page names none at all — no USD, no AUD, no currency mark — so US dollars is our inference from a US vendor. aud_native: false. Converted at US$1 = A$1.4045 (Frankfurter/ECB, 18 September 2026), ex-GST per our GST rule. Closes this tool's row on the AUD claim queue. - 20 Jun 2026 — First reviewed.
What Activepieces is
Activepieces is a no-code automation platform — think Zapier or Make, but open-source. You build "flows" that connect your apps: when a new HubSpot contact lands, send a Slack message; when a form is submitted, add a row to Google Sheets and email the lead. The visual builder handles triggers, actions and data mapping without code.
What makes it 2026-relevant is the AI layer. It ships native AI pieces, an "Ask AI" code helper that writes data transformations in plain English, and AI agents that can reason and act across your connected apps. It also exposes 280+ of its integrations as MCP servers, so you can drive them from Claude Desktop, Cursor or Windsurf.
The company is San Francisco-based, a Y Combinator Summer 2022 graduate, founded by Ashraf Samhouri and Mohammad AbuAboud. The core product is MIT-licensed and self-hostable, with a paid cloud and enterprise tier on top.
What it costs in Australia
There is no AUD billing. Activepieces cloud is priced in US dollars. The AUD figures below are our own conversions at US$1 ≈ A$1.40, shown ex-GST.
| Plan | Price (USD) | Approx AUD (ex-GST) | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Community (self-hosted) | Free, MIT licence | Free | Unlimited flows and runs on your own server; core features; needs technical skill to deploy |
| ~~Standard (cloud), US$5 per active flow~~ | Retired — Activepieces no longer prices per flow (24 Sep 2026). The ladder is now Free, Plus US$20 flat/mo, Team US$200 flat/mo and Ultimate (custom). | ~A$28/mo (Plus), ~A$281/mo (Team) | First 10 active flows free, unlimited runs, AI agents, unlimited MCP servers, unlimited tables, community support |

The headline feature is that you pay per active flow, not per task. Working from the confirmed US$5-per-active-flow rate after the first 10 free flows: 50 flows is US$200/mo (40 paid flows; ~A$280 converted); 100 flows is US$450/mo (90 paid flows; ~A$630 converted). A flow that fires 10,000 times costs the same as one that fires once. That is the opposite of Zapier's task-metering and genuinely changes the maths for high-volume, low-flow-count operations.
GST: as an overseas digital supplier billing in USD, Activepieces should be charging 10% GST to Australian consumers under the ATO's imported-services rules, but the pricing page does not confirm AU GST handling. Australian buyers should check the tax line on their first invoice rather than assume GST is included.
How it works in practice
You start from a trigger — a webhook, a schedule, a new row, an inbound email — then chain actions from the 280+ pieces. The builder is genuinely no-code for standard connections; you drag, configure, test, and turn the flow on. Where it pulls ahead of older tools is the "Ask AI" step: describe the data transformation you want ("split the full name into first and last, title-case both") and it writes the code piece for you, so non-technical users aren't blocked the moment a flow needs custom logic.
The AI agents are the newer, more ambitious layer — you give an agent a goal and a set of connected tools, and it decides which actions to take rather than following a fixed path. Useful, but less predictable than a hard-wired flow, so test before trusting it with anything that touches money or customers.
For an Australian business with in-house technical help, the self-hosted Community Edition runs on Docker, Helm or any cloud provider. Point it at an Australian region (an AWS Sydney or Azure Australia East instance) and your automation data never leaves the country — which is the cleanest answer to the data-residency question this tool has.
What it does well
- Per-flow pricing is honestly cheap for the right shape of business. No per-task surprise bills. If you run a handful of high-volume flows, you'll pay a fraction of Zapier.
- Self-hosting solves data residency outright. MIT-licensed, deploy it in an AU region, own your data. Few commercial rivals offer this.
- The AI layer is real, not a sticker. "Ask AI" code generation and MCP exposure of 280+ integrations are practical, not marketing gloss.
- Open-source extensibility. 280+ pieces, around 60% community-contributed, all published as npm packages. If a connector is missing, you (or a developer) can build one.
What it doesn't do well
- No AUD billing and no Australian data residency for the cloud. Cloud users pay in USD, and Activepieces' own deployment page offers EU and US data regions only — there is no Australian region. For Finance, Legal or HR data, that's a real gap unless you self-host.
- Per-flow pricing flips against you with many small flows. If your work is lots of distinct, low-volume automations rather than a few busy ones, the US$5-per-flow model adds up fast — 100 flows is ~A$630/mo.
- Self-hosting needs genuine technical skill. The "free unlimited" version assumes you can run and maintain Docker/Helm. For a non-technical Melbourne business owner, that's not really free — it's a developer's weekend.
- Standard cloud support is community-only. No dedicated support until the custom-priced Ultimate tier. When a flow breaks at 4pm before a deadline, a forum is cold comfort.
- AI agents trade predictability for autonomy. Powerful, but harder to trust for anything sensitive than a fixed-path flow.
Australian fit
This is where Activepieces lands middle-of-the-road. The cloud product is a global, USD-billed service offering EU and US data regions only — no Australian data residency — plus no AUD pricing and community-only support on the paid Standard tier, none of which is built with an Australian business in mind. There's no AU GST confirmation on the pricing page and no local support presence.
The redeeming feature is the open-source escape hatch. An Australian business that self-hosts on an AWS Sydney or Azure Australia East instance gets full data residency and unlimited usage at zero licence cost — a stronger sovereignty story than almost any commercial automation tool. But that path requires technical capability most small businesses don't have in-house, which is exactly the audience this publication writes for.
Alternatives
- Make — more mature visual builder and a larger template library, but reverts to per-operation metering, so high-volume flows get expensive. Better for many small automations; worse for a few busy ones.
- Zapier — the incumbent, the biggest app catalogue and the gentlest learning curve, but task-based pricing and no self-host option. The safe default if you want polish over price.
- n8n — the closest like-for-like: open-source, self-hostable, developer-leaning. Pick n8n if you want maximum control and don't mind more complexity; Activepieces if you want a cleaner no-code surface.
Bottom line
Activepieces is a strong pick for a specific Australian buyer: someone running a small number of high-volume automations who values predictable pricing, or a business with technical help that wants to self-host in an Australian region and own its data outright. The per-flow pricing is the most honest in the category, and the AI tooling is real.
It is the wrong pick if you're a non-technical operator who needs AUD billing, local support, and a stated Australian hosting region out of the box — that buyer should look at the cloud incumbents and accept the higher bill, or wait for Activepieces to publish an AU data-residency option. Four stars: very good, with its Australian fit held back by USD-only billing and no published local hosting.

Update history
- 24 Sep 2026 🇦🇺 CORRECTION — Activepieces has abandoned per-flow pricing. Verified 24 September 2026 in a browser on an Australian connection. This review priced the cloud plan at “Free, then US$5 per active flow a month”. That model is gone. The page now sells flat tiers metered in credits:
- 24 Sep 2026 — The AUD column was never grossed up for GST, and every word around it said it was. The header read “gross-up; GST unconfirmed” and the note beneath described a 10% uplift — while the figures themselves are plain conversions at 1.4045. Checked before changing a word: across the 63 files carrying this wording, 141 rows convert at 1.4045 and none at 1.4045 × 1.10. No figure changed here; only the description of them did. Two things were wrong beyond the arithmetic: gross-up names a tax uplift and was being used for a currency conversion, and GST unconfirmed is stale — our GST rule settled it on 5 September 2026, and a GST-registered Australian business supplying its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service. No USD price moved and no score changed.

Frequently asked questions
Is Activepieces available in Australia?
Yes. The cloud product is a global service you can use from Australia, and the MIT-licensed Community Edition can be self-hosted on your own server anywhere.
Does Activepieces charge in AUD?
No. Cloud billing is USD only. The paid Standard tier is US$5 per active flow per month after 10 free flows (~A$7 converted). Activepieces doesn't confirm GST handling, so check the tax line on your first invoice.
Is there a free plan or free trial?
Yes, two ways. The cloud Standard tier gives you the first 10 active flows free with unlimited runs. And the self-hosted Community Edition is free under an MIT licence, with unlimited flows and runs — though it needs technical skill to deploy.
Can I keep my data in Australia?
Only by self-hosting. Activepieces' cloud offers EU and US data regions only — no Australian residency. Self-host on an AWS Sydney or Azure Australia East instance and your automation data never leaves the country, which is the cleanest answer here.
Who is Activepieces best for?
The business running a small number of high-volume automations that values predictable per-flow pricing, or one with technical help that wants to self-host in an Australian region. It's the wrong pick if you need AUD billing and local support out of the box.
