The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.

Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).

Verdict (TL;DR): Deel is the leading global employer-of-record and payroll platform for companies hiring across borders. For Australian businesses bringing on international contractors or employees — or for overseas companies hiring in Australia — it is one of the best options available. The AI-powered compliance tools and superannuation management are genuinely useful. The price is high, and you are still billed in USD. But for the right use case, the cost is cheaper than setting up a foreign entity.

Score: 17/25 — ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good

Last reviewed: 26 June 2026 by Adam.

Note: Deel provides payroll and employer-of-record services, but this review is not legal or HR advice. Australian payroll, superannuation, Award compliance, and Fair Work Act obligations are complex and fact-specific. Consult a qualified HR professional, accountant, or employment lawyer before making payroll decisions for your business.

What Deel is

Deel is a US-headquartered global HR and payroll platform covering employer-of-record (EOR) services, contractor management, global payroll, and an HRIS. It operates in more than 150 countries and handles the local compliance, payroll, and benefits administration that would otherwise require setting up a legal entity in each country.

For Australian businesses, Deel is relevant in two directions. First, Australian companies wanting to hire employees or contractors overseas without setting up foreign entities. Second, overseas companies wanting to hire workers in Australia without establishing an Australian entity. Deel's wholly owned Australian entity handles the local employer obligations — Fair Work onboarding, superannuation, payroll tax, and statutory entitlements — so the client company doesn't have to.

The AI layer is embedded throughout: Deel AI answers compliance questions across 150+ countries, generates reports from org data, and flags regulatory changes that affect your workforce.

What it costs in Australia

Deel bills exclusively in USD. All figures below are converted at USD→AUD 1.4045 (ECB reference rate, 18 September 2026). Our AUD figures are conversions shown ex-GST: a GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; an unregistered buyer should allow ~10% on top.

Product USD price Approx. AUD ex-GST
EOR (Employer of Record) US$599/employee/month ~A$841/employee/month
~~EOR — Enterprise~~ Withdrawn 23 Sep 2026 — no such tier on the pricing page. Was listed at US$899/employee/month. —
Contractor Management US$49/contractor/month ~A$69/contractor/month
Contractor of Record (added 23 Sep 2026) US$325/contractor/month ~A$456/contractor/month
Talent sourcing (added 23 Sep 2026) US$14/worker/month ~A$20/worker/month
Contractor of Record US$325/contractor/month ~A$455/contractor/month
Global Payroll (own entity) US$29/employee/month ~A$41/employee/month
Deel HRIS Free (with paid modules) —

These are Deel's published list prices as of June 2026. EOR pricing does not include the employee's gross salary, superannuation (12%), or state payroll taxes (4.75%–6.85% depending on state and threshold). The service fee covers Deel's platform and employer liability — the actual cost of each hire will be substantially higher.

There is no free trial for EOR or payroll. The HRIS module is included at no extra charge when you use another Deel product.

For context: if an Australian SMB uses Deel to manage five offshore contractors at US$49/month each, the annual platform cost is approximately A$4,560 ex-GST. One EOR hire overseas for a year costs approximately A$11,136 in service fees alone, before salary and employer contributions.

How it works in practice

For an Australian business hiring overseas: you log into Deel, select the country, and Deel presents the legally required employment terms for that jurisdiction. You define the role, salary, and start date. Deel generates a locally compliant contract, handles onboarding, and runs payroll — paying the employee in their local currency while you transfer a single consolidated amount in USD or AUD.

For an overseas business hiring in Australia through Deel's EOR: Deel's Australian entity becomes the legal employer. Deel enrolls the employee in a superannuation fund, issues the Fair Work Information Statement, sets up payroll, and manages statutory leave accruals. The client company manages the work.

The Deel AI assistant, embedded in the platform, can answer compliance questions — "What is the current notice period requirement in Australia for a permanent employee?" or "What are the payroll tax thresholds in Victoria?" — and pulls from its country-specific compliance database. It is not a substitute for legal advice but is genuinely useful for quick directional answers.

Deel also handles contractor payments: you can pay international contractors in 120+ currencies, manage contracts, and collect compliance documents (tax forms, local equivalents) in one place.

What it does well

Australian compliance is real, not aspirational. Deel's Australian entity handles Fair Work Information Statements, superannuation enrolment, payroll tax, and mandatory leave provisions. This is more substantive than many international competitors who list Australia as "supported" but rely on third-party local providers.

Superannuation management. Deel handles superannuation contributions automatically, currently at the 12% Superannuation Guarantee rate. Importantly, Deel has flagged readiness for "payday super" — the July 2026 requirement for superannuation to be paid at the same time as wages rather than quarterly. (confirm payday super readiness directly with Deel before the July 2026 deadline.)

Contractor payments at scale. The US$49/contractor/month contractor management product is legitimately useful for Australian businesses paying overseas freelancers. You consolidate what would otherwise be a mess of international bank transfers and compliance paperwork into one platform.

Deel AI compliance queries. The natural-language compliance assistant is well-trained on local employment law across 150+ countries. It is faster and more accurate than a Google search for directional answers. It is not a substitute for a lawyer.

HRIS included. The Deel HRIS — covering people records, org charts, time off, and documents — comes with any paid module. For businesses that don't need a heavyweight HRIS, this is a reasonable bonus.

Data privacy. Deel's documentation states that conversations and organisation data are not shared with external AI training models. (review Deel's current DPA and privacy terms before processing Australian employee data.)

What it doesn't do well

Price. US$599 per EOR employee per month is one of the most expensive in the market. For a five-person international team, that is approximately A$55,000 per year in Deel fees before you pay anyone. Smaller businesses will feel this sharply.

No AUD billing. You pay in USD, absorb the exchange rate, and manage the currency risk yourself. For Australian businesses with tight margins, this is a genuine friction point.

Award rates are not built in. Deel handles Modern Award minimum compliance as part of EOR for Australian hires, but the platform does not have a self-service Award rate calculator for Australian businesses managing their own existing workforce. If you are an Australian employer trying to classify employees under Awards and calculate penalty rates, Deel is not the right tool — Employment Hero or a payroll-specific system is.

Support response times vary. Reviews on G2 note that Deel's customer support can be slow outside US business hours. Australian businesses needing urgent payroll support may hit time zone friction.

Data residency unclear. Deel does not publish a specific Australian data residency commitment for all data types. Employee data processed through Deel may be stored in the United States. (request Deel's current Data Processing Agreement and confirm data residency for Australian employee records before signing.)

Complexity for simple use cases. If you just need to pay a single overseas contractor, the onboarding and fee structure may be more friction than the task warrants. Tools like Wise Business or Airwallex handle single contractor payments at much lower cost.

Australian fit

Deel has meaningful Australian infrastructure. Its wholly owned Australian entity is the employer of record for Australian hires, which is a significantly stronger compliance position than platforms relying on third-party local entities.

The Fair Work Information Statement requirement — mandatory for all new Australian employees — is handled by Deel as part of EOR onboarding. Superannuation enrolment and contributions at the current 12% Superannuation Guarantee rate are built into the payroll workflow.

The payday super reform (from July 2026, requiring super to be paid at the same time as wages) is a significant compliance change. Deel has indicated readiness for this requirement, but confirm directly before July 2026 if you have Australian EOR employees. (primary confirmation required from Deel.)

The Privacy Act 1988 applies to employee personal information. If Australian employee data is processed or stored overseas through Deel, your business has obligations around cross-border disclosure of personal information. Conduct a privacy review before onboarding. (confirm data processing locations with Deel's compliance team.)

Australian Fit score: 3/5. Genuine local compliance capability for EOR hires. Super and Fair Work handled. But USD billing, no confirmed AU data residency for all products, and limited support for existing Australian workforce Award compliance.

Alternatives

Employment Hero — Australian-built HR and payroll platform. Better for managing an existing Australian workforce under Modern Awards. Cheaper for domestic-only use. Less capable for global contractor/EOR at scale.

Rippling — US platform with growing Australian presence. Covers HR, payroll, and IT in one. Worth comparing for mid-market businesses with both Australian and overseas headcount.

Workable — Recruiting and onboarding focus rather than payroll. Good for the hiring stage; less useful once you need to run international payroll.

Bottom line

Deel earns its reputation for companies that genuinely need to hire across borders. The Australian compliance coverage — real EOR, super management, Fair Work onboarding — is substantive. The AI compliance assistant is a practical time-saver. The price is high, and the USD billing is friction, but for a business running five or more international contractors or EOR employees, the alternative (setting up foreign entities, hiring local lawyers in each country) costs more. Confirm payday super readiness before July 2026 and get a DPA reviewed before you move Australian employee data through the platform.

Update history
  • 23 Sep 2026 🇦🇺 CORRECTION — two tiers were missing and one we list is not on the page. Verified 23 September 2026 in a browser on an Australian connection. Both headline figures hold: EOR at US$599 per employee per month and contractor management at US$49 per contractor per month. But deel.com/pricing publishes five prices and this review carried three. Added: Contractor of Record at US$325 per contractor per month — the option that shifts misclassification liability to Deel, which is the single most relevant tier for an Australian business worried about sham contracting — and talent sourcing at US$14 per worker per month. Withdrawn: the “EOR — Enterprise” row at US$899, which does not appear anywhere on the pricing page; it is not published, so we should not print it as though it were. Not added, on purpose: US PEO at US$125 per employee per month, which is co-employment across US states and cannot be bought for an Australian hire — it sits on the same card as the EOR price and is easy to misread as a cheaper EOR entry point. It is not one. Currency confirmed USD, no AUD anywhere, which closes this tool's row on the AUD claim queue. Converted at US$1 = A$1.4045 (Frankfurter/ECB, 18 September 2026), ex-GST per our GST rule. No score change: nothing here moves Value for Money or Australian Fit.
  • 21 Sep 2026 — The grossed-up AUD column removed from the pricing table. The table carried a second Australian column adding 10% GST to every converted figure, so each plan had two Australian prices and the higher one asserted a tax most of our readers do not pay: under the ATO rule our GST treatment rests on, a GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service. Nothing was re-cut — the ex-GST column is unchanged and is the price. Removed, and kept visible here per our price-history rule: the column headed "Approx. AUD if GST charged, +10%" (EOR (Employer of Record) ~A$923/employee/month; EOR — Enterprise ~A$1,385/employee/month; Contractor Management ~A$76/contractor/month; Contractor of Record ~A$501/contractor/month; Global Payroll (own entity) ~A$45/employee/month). The GST position is stated in words once in the note above the pricing table. No USD price moved and no score changed. reviewed: untouched per our dating rule.

Frequently asked questions

Does Deel handle Australian superannuation and Fair Work compliance?

Yes, for businesses using Deel's employer-of-record (EOR) service in Australia. Deel's wholly owned Australian entity handles superannuation enrolment and contributions at the current 12% Superannuation Guarantee rate, issues the mandatory Fair Work Information Statement, and manages payroll tax. Confirm payday super readiness (effective July 2026) directly with Deel before onboarding Australian EOR employees.

How much does Deel cost for Australian businesses?

Deel bills in USD. EOR services cost US$599 per employee per month (approximately A$839 ex-GST at June 2026 rates), not including the employee's salary, superannuation, or payroll tax. Contractor management costs US$49 per contractor per month (approximately A$69 ex-GST). Global payroll for businesses with an existing Australian entity starts at US$29 per employee per month.

Is Deel a good option for a small Australian business?

Deel is best suited to Australian businesses hiring internationally or overseas companies hiring in Australia. For managing an existing Australian workforce under Modern Award obligations, Employment Hero is a more cost-effective and locally tailored option. Deel's high price floor (US$599/employee/month for EOR) makes it less suitable for very small teams with purely domestic payroll needs.
