The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.

Verdict (TL;DR): Workable is a genuinely capable, well-supported global recruiting platform — a deep ATS with sourcing, scorecards, video interviews and integrated AI screening, plus a lighter HRIS layer. For an Australian business it's eminently usable, but it bills in USD only, hosts candidate data in the US (no Australian region), has no Australian entity or confirmed ABN tax invoice, and crucially has zero Fair Work / Privacy Act awareness baked into its compliance tooling. Buy it for the recruiting engine, not for compliance — and layer your own Australian employment-law and privacy compliance on top. It does not replace qualified legal or HR advice.

What it is and who owns it

Workable is an all-in-one recruiting and HR platform built around a mature applicant tracking system (ATS). It has been around far longer than the current wave of AI hiring tools, and it shows: this is a deep, well-worn recruiting product, not a thin AI wrapper hastily bolted onto a chatbot.

The core is the ATS — the system that holds your job openings, your pipeline of candidates, and every interaction along the way. Around that, Workable layers candidate sourcing across 200-plus job boards, a candidate database of 400 million-plus profiles, a talent CRM, interview scheduling and scorecards, one-way (recorded) video interviews, and a careers-page builder. On top of the recruiting engine sits a lighter HR information system (HRIS) layer covering onboarding, time-off, time tracking, e-signatures, payroll preparation and performance reviews — enough to run a small team's people admin without a second tool.

The AI features are the headline in 2026. Workable offers AI Sourcing (matching your role against that 400m-profile database), AI Screening (semantic matching of applicants to your job requirements), an AI job-description generator, an AI interview-question generator, and AI-driven social-media candidate targeting. Notably, these are woven into the existing workflow rather than sitting off to the side.

Ownership matters for an Australian buyer. The operating entity is Workable, Inc., a United States company (stated in its privacy policy). There is no evidence of an Australian subsidiary, local entity or Australian-registered presence. It is sold globally — Workable cites 30,000-plus customers worldwide and is listed on Capterra Australia — but it is, at its core, a US company selling into Australia rather than an Australian operator.

A reminder up front, and one this review will repeat because it matters: Workable is a recruitment-automation product, not a legal or compliance product. Nothing here, and nothing in Workable's tooling, replaces qualified legal, HR or financial advice from an Australian professional.

Pricing in AUD (and the GST / ABN question)

Plan USD / month Approx AUD / month (ex-GST) Billed annually
Standard US$299 ~A$420 US$3,588/yr
Premier US$599 ~A$841 US$7,188/yr
Enterprise US$719 ~A$1,010 US$8,628/yr

No permanent free tier — a 15-day trial of the full Standard feature set, no card. Table added 24 September 2026 from figures already in this review, re-confirmed against workable.com/pricing the same day — the three monthly figures and the annual totals all match. Workable names no currency on the page; US dollars is our inference. Converted at US$1 = A$1.4045 (Frankfurter/ECB, 18 September 2026), ex-GST per our GST rule.

Workable publishes three tiers on its own pricing page — Standard US$299/mo, Premier US$599/mo and Enterprise US$719/mo (each ~20% off on annual), in US dollars only, with no AUD option at checkout.

  • Standard — USD 299/mo (billed monthly), or USD 3,588/yr (a 20% saving). Listed for 1-20 employees and scales with headcount. That's ~AUD 419/mo ex-GST.
  • Premier — USD 599/mo, or USD 7,188/yr. Adds texting, video interviews, assessments, performance reviews, SSO and priority support. That's ~AUD 839/mo ex-GST.
  • Enterprise — USD 719/mo, or USD 8,628/yr. Adds custom report building and additional permission sets. That's ~AUD 1,007/mo ex-GST.

There is no permanent free tier — only a 15-day free trial with the full Standard feature set and no credit card required (per workable.com/pricing). Third-party listings citing a "$0" edition are wrong.

The tax position is where Australian buyers need to pay attention. There is no confirmation on Workable's own pages that it charges Australian GST or issues an ABN tax invoice. As a non-resident supplier, Workable may not, so you may need to self-assess GST on imported services — confirm before relying on input-tax credits.

The headline number also moves. Standard's USD 299 is pitched at 1-20 employees and is headcount-scaled, so as your team grows the price rises materially. Budget for the trajectory, not just the entry point.

Ease of use

This is one of Workable's genuine strengths and the reason it sustains a large customer base. Across review sources it is consistently rated easy to use and easy to scale, with a clean ATS workflow that hiring managers can pick up without a heavy onboarding lift. The pipeline view, scorecards and scheduling are mature and unfussy, and the AI features are presented inside the flow you're already in rather than as a separate module you have to learn. For a non-specialist — say a Melbourne business owner running hiring alongside everything else — the learning curve is gentle. We score it 4/5; it loses a point only because the breadth of the platform (recruiting plus an HRIS layer) means there is more surface area than a single-purpose tool.

Features

Feature depth is where Workable earns its keep. The recruiting suite is genuinely complete: sourcing across 200-plus job boards, a 400m-plus candidate database, talent CRM, interview scheduling, structured scorecards, recorded video interviews, and a careers-page builder. The AI layer — sourcing, semantic screening, job-description and interview-question generation, and social targeting — is integrated rather than gimmicky. And the HRIS extension (onboarding, time-off, time tracking, e-signature, payroll prep, performance reviews) makes Workable a plausible single tool for a small company that wants recruiting and basic people admin in one place.

The honest caveat: the HRIS layer is lighter than dedicated Australian HR platforms (the Employment Heroes and similar of this world), and the AI matching accuracy is unbenchmarked — the vendor's accuracy claims are marketing, with no independent benchmark located. That keeps it at a strong 4/5 rather than a 5.

Australian fit — the moat, and where Workable is weakest

This is the criterion that decides the review for an Australian audience, and it covers two things: Australian-law awareness and data residency. Workable scores 2/5, and scored strictly.

Australian-law awareness: effectively none. Workable's compliance automation is built for GDPR, CCPA, EEO and OFCCP — that is, US and EU regimes. It is not built for the Australian Fair Work Act, the National Employment Standards, modern awards, Australian anti-discrimination law, or the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). There is no evidence its AI screening is tuned to, or audited against, Australian employment or anti-discrimination law.

That matters more for a hiring tool than for almost any other category, because hiring decisions carry direct legal exposure. AI screening and sourcing tools carry well-documented bias and accuracy risks — semantic matching can encode bias and surface false matches — and automated hiring decisions are under increasing regulatory scrutiny. Critically, the Australian employer remains fully responsible under the Fair Work Act and federal/state discrimination law for any adverse-action or discrimination outcome, regardless of what the tool recommended. The software's screening shortlist is not a legal defence. If the AI filters out a class of candidates in a way that produces a discriminatory result, that's your liability, not Workable's.

RED LINE, stated plainly: Workable does NOT replace qualified legal, HR or financial advice. Verify any hiring-compliance decision — screening criteria, record-keeping, adverse-action processes — with a qualified Australian employment lawyer or HR adviser. The tool will not, on its own, make your hiring process Fair Work-compliant.

Data residency: US-hosted, no Australian region. Workable is hosted and operated in the United States via Workable, Inc. and its service providers (workable.com/privacy). The privacy policy states data may be stored on servers in the USA and the EEA, and transferred outside the UK/EEA. There is no Australian data region. International transfers rely on EU/UK Standard Contractual Clauses and self-certification under the EU-U.S. and Swiss-U.S. Data Privacy Framework plus the UK Extension. For an Australian employer, candidate PII — CVs, contact details, interview notes — will sit offshore, which is a real consideration under the Privacy Act and APPs (particularly APP 8 on cross-border disclosure). You can use it compliantly, but the obligation to assess and disclose that offshore handling sits with you.

To Workable's genuine credit, its generic security credentials are strong: ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 27017, SOC 2 Type II and SOC 3, with GDPR/CCPA/EEO/OFCCP tooling. A sub-processor list is published at workable.com/subprocessors, though we have not individually verified those identities or whether any sit in the Asia-Pacific region. Solid security certifications are why this scores a 2 rather than a 1 — that, and the fact that it is genuinely usable from Australia. But on the criterion that defines this category, Workable is a US tool you adapt to Australia, not an Australian-aware one.

There is also no evidence on Workable's pages of dedicated AU-based support — support appears global/offshore relative to Australian business hours, and candidate data is hosted in the US (AWS/GCP US East), with no Australian region.

Limitations

  • US (and EEA) data hosting, no Australian residency option — a real Privacy Act / APP consideration for candidate PII.
  • USD-only published pricing ($299/$599/$719/mo), no AUD billing, no Australian entity, no confirmed ABN tax invoice; you may need to self-assess GST on imported services. Data hosted in the US, no AU region.
  • No Australian-law awareness — compliance automation targets GDPR/CCPA/EEO/OFCCP, not Fair Work, the NES, modern awards or AU anti-discrimination law.
  • AI screening/sourcing carries bias and accuracy risk, and the employer keeps full legal responsibility for hiring decisions and adverse action.
  • No evidence of AU-based support — offshore relative to AU hours.
  • Headcount-scaled pricing means the USD 299 entry point can climb materially as you grow.
  • It does not replace qualified legal/HR advice — and its tooling will not make an Australian hiring process Fair Work-compliant on its own.

How it scores

Criterion Score Why
Value for Money 3/5 USD-only $299/$599/$719 with no permanent free tier (15-day trial), headcount-scaled so cost climbs with the team
Ease of Use 4/5 Mature, unfussy pipeline, scorecards and scheduling; consistently rated easy to pick up
Feature Depth 4/5 Deep ATS plus sourcing, video interviews, AI screening and a lighter HRIS layer; loses a point on surface area
Australian Fit 2/5 US data hosting with no AU region, no Australian entity or ABN, and no Fair Work / NES awareness
Reliability & Support 4/5 Strong certs (ISO 27001/27017, SOC 2 Type II/SOC 3); no evidence of dedicated AU-based support
Total 17/25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good

Verdict

Workable is a good product doing what it's built to do: running real recruiting at volume, with mature workflow and AI that's integrated rather than ornamental. For an Australian SME or scale-up that needs a capable, well-supported global ATS and is comfortable with USD billing and US data hosting, it's a defensible choice — provided you treat compliance as your job, not the tool's. Buy it for the recruiting engine. Layer your own Australian employment-law and Privacy Act compliance on top, get an employment lawyer or HR adviser across your screening criteria and adverse-action process, and confirm the GST/ABN treatment with your accountant before you commit.

It scores 17/25. The recruiting craft is there. The Australian fit is not — and in this category, that's the part that carries legal weight.

Update history
  • 9 Oct 2026 — Re-checked for the AUD-claim queue (#434), workable.com/pricing read in a browser on an Australian connection: Standard US$299, Premier US$599 and Enterprise US$719 a month at the 1–20 employee band (US$3,588 / 7,188 / 8,628 a year, annual saving 20%) stand, the free trial is still offered and the page shows a bare $ with no currency label, so the USD finding holds and aud_native: false is now set in the frontmatter. New and recorded here rather than in the table: Workable now sells AI Recruiting Agent credit packs at US$0.12, US$0.10 and US$0.095 a credit (US$600, US$1,000 and US$4,750 packs). Capture: Dossiers/captures/workable-pricing-2026-10-09.txt.
  • 24 Sep 2026 🇦🇺 CORRECTION — two of the three AUD conversions were still on the retired 1.55 basis. Re-checked 24 September 2026 against workable.com/pricing; the US figures are all correct and unchanged — Standard US$299, Premier US$599, Enterprise US$719, with annual totals US$3,588 / US$7,188 / US$8,628 also confirmed. But the FAQ converted them inconsistently: US$299 at 1.4045 (A$419.95, printed as ~A$419) and US$599 and US$719 at about 1.55 (A$928 and A$1,114), the basis our AUD pricing rule retired on 5 September. Corrected to ~A$841 and ~A$1,010. The error overstated Enterprise by more than A$100 a month. Sentry 18 does not catch this — same structural gap as REimagineHome ([AQ10]): it pairs an AUD figure with a USD one in the same row or sentence, and a single sentence mixing one correct conversion with two wrong ones passes. A pricing table has also been added so the directory tile stops publishing nothing for a tool with three published prices.
  • 21 Sep 2026 — All three tiers lost their “if 10% GST applies” second price: AUD 460, AUD 922 and AUD 1,107. The ex-GST figures beside them — AUD 419, AUD 839 and AUD 1,007 — were already correct at USD→AUD 1.4045 (ECB reference rate, 18 September 2026) and are unchanged, so every plan had two Australian prices and the higher one asserted a tax most of our readers do not pay. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; an unregistered buyer should allow ~10% on top. No USD price moved and no score changed. Superseded figures kept visible per our price-history rule; reviewed: untouched per our dating rule.

Frequently asked questions

Is Workable available in Australia?

Yes. It's sold globally and accessible from Australia, but it's a US company (Workable, Inc.) with no Australian entity or local presence — you're buying a US tool that works here, not an Australian operator.

Does Workable charge in AUD?

No. Workable bills in US dollars only — Standard US$299/mo, Premier US$599/mo, Enterprise US$719/mo (~A$420, ~A$841 and ~A$1,010 respectively at 1.4045). There's no AUD checkout and no confirmed ABN tax invoice; you may need to self-assess GST on imported services.

Is there a free plan or free trial?

No permanent free tier. Workable offers a 15-day free trial of the full Standard feature set, no credit card required. Third-party listings citing a "$0" edition are wrong.

Where is my candidate data stored?

In the United States (and the EEA), with no Australian data region. Candidate PII sits offshore, which is a real Privacy Act / APP 8 consideration for Australian employers — the obligation to assess and disclose that handling is yours.

Does Workable understand Australian employment law?

No. Its compliance tooling targets GDPR, CCPA, EEO and OFCCP — not the Fair Work Act, the NES, modern awards or the Privacy Act. The Australian employer keeps full legal responsibility for hiring decisions. It does not replace qualified legal or HR advice.
