Pasture.io Review Australia 2026: A Tasmanian Pasture Platform With a New AI Layer

The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.
Skip to the verdictThe verdict: Pasture.io is a serious, Tasmanian-built pasture-management platform. It measures your paddocks by satellite, builds feed wedges, and keeps your grazing records straight. The new "Pio" AI farm chat is a nice extra, not the main event — it's an OpenAI-powered chat layer the vendor itself calls early-stage. If you run dairy or beef and want to stop walking paddocks with a plate meter, this is one of the few genuinely Australian options. If you came for the AI, temper your expectations. Score: 18/25 — Very Good.
Most "AI farming" tools are a chatbot in a trench coat. Pasture.io is the opposite problem: a mature pasture-measurement business that has recently added a chat assistant. The platform has been running since 2014, the concept started on a North-West Tasmanian dairy farm in 2005, and the company says it released the world's first satellite pasture measurement back in 2018. Source That history matters more than the AI badge.
So read this as a review of a grazing platform first, and an AI tool second. For a Melbourne reader who happens to also run cattle in Gippsland, here's what you're actually buying.
What it does well
- Satellite pasture measurement with no hardware. Pasture.io estimates biomass across your paddocks from satellite imagery — no plate meter, no walking, no on-farm sensors. For anyone who has spent a Sunday walking transects, that's the headline.
- Two satellite tiers to match your budget. Essential gives "up to weekly" flyovers at "medium image resolution (up to 10m2)"; Ultimate gives "near daily" flyovers at "high image resolution (up to 3m2)". Source Both feed a pasture forecast, so you're planning rotations on data, not gut feel.
- Proper farm records, not just pretty maps. It tracks pasture covers, growth rates and leaf emergence, builds predictive feed wedges, and records grazings, fertiliser, planting and spraying. Calculators, full paddock history and reporting are included.
- A genuinely Australian operation. HQ is in Hobart (Sandy Bay), there's a dedicated Australian phone line, and the company won the Tasmanian Export Award (Advanced Technologies) two years running, in 2023 and 2024. Source It operates across Australia, New Zealand, the UK and the US, so it's not a one-region hobby project. Source
- The Pio AI chat is a sensible add-on. Pio is an in-app assistant that gives advice on agronomy, ruminant nutrition, livestock and grazing, with awareness of your farm's location and context. Source The vendor describes it as powered by "ChatGPT-4" from OpenAI — its own wording, which doesn't map cleanly onto a current OpenAI model name, so read it as "an OpenAI model" rather than a specific version.
Watch out for
- The AI is not the core product. Pio is a recent chat layer over an established platform, and the vendor itself says "this iteration is only the beginning" and plans to grow Pio's capabilities. Source It's a general-purpose OpenAI LLM, not a purpose-built agronomy model. Treat its advice as a starting point, not a verdict — and not a substitute for a qualified agronomist, vet or nutritionist.
- Your data leaves the country when you use Pio. The privacy policy states that when you use Pio, "we may send your prompt, recent chat history, user name, and relevant farm context to the language-model provider," and lists the United States among the overseas jurisdictions service providers may sit in. Source If you're cautious about farm data going offshore, that's a real consideration.
- Add-ons lock you into an annual upfront contract. The satellite tiers are paid yearly, with no monthly option, and the add-ons can't be trialled — only the base Fundamental app can. Source All plans and add-ons are annual contracts that must be paid in full. Source
- It's only for grazing. This is built for pastoral livestock — dairy and beef. Outside that niche it's irrelevant.
- Whether Pio costs extra is unclear. The pages we reviewed don't clearly state whether Pio is bundled into a plan or sold as a paid extra. The vendor doesn't spell this out on its public pricing pages, so confirm it with Pasture.io before you sign up.
Pricing
All prices are shown in Australian dollars on the vendor's plans page — a good sign for local buyers. Source
| Plan | Price (AUD) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fundamental (base app) | A$1,099/year (or A$126/month) | The core platform; the only tier that can be trialled |
| Essential satellite add-on | A$0.33/ha/month, paid yearly | "Up to weekly" flyovers, "up to 10m2" resolution; annual contract, paid in full |
| Ultimate satellite add-on | A$0.79/ha/month, paid yearly | "Near daily" flyovers, "up to 3m2" resolution; annual contract, paid in full |
Prices and tiers per the vendor's plans page. Source The help centre frames the add-ons as per-hectare annual rates — about A$3.99/ha/year for Essential and A$9.48/ha/year for Ultimate, on top of the A$1,099 Fundamental app (the monthly per-hectare figures above are the same prices, divided by twelve). Source
GST: The vendor's help centre states "GST is inclusive for Australian customers and tax-exclusive for all other countries" — so for Australian buyers, the AUD prices above already include GST. Source
Worked example: a 200-hectare beef block on the Essential add-on is roughly A$0.33 × 200 × 12 = about A$792/year on top of the A$1,099 base, GST inclusive. That's our own calculation from the published per-hectare rate, not a vendor quote.
Australian fit
This is where Pasture.io earns its keep. Pricing is native AUD. It's Australian-founded — established in 2014 by dairy farmer Oliver Roberts, with the concept born on a North-West Tasmanian farm in 2005 — and Australian-built, with a Hobart HQ and a dedicated Australian phone line (+61 480 022 345). Source
On data residency, the picture is mixed. The privacy policy says data is stored "on servers based in Australia and overseas," and that the company operates under the Australian Privacy Principles set out in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). Source But the moment you use Pio, your prompt, recent chat history, user name and relevant farm context are sent to the language-model provider, and the policy lists the United States among the overseas jurisdictions its service providers may sit in. Source The vendor doesn't name a specific cloud provider or pinpoint where the overseas copy of your data sits.
The vendor doesn't publish its Australian support hours on the pages we reviewed. Still, on the criterion that defines this publication — does it genuinely serve Australians — Pasture.io is about as good as it gets in this category.
Scoring
| Criterion | Score | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Value for Money | 3/5 | Fair per-hectare satellite pricing, but annual add-ons paid in full, no monthly option and no trial on the add-ons limit flexibility. |
| Ease of Use | 3/5 | Satellite removes the manual walking; Pio chat is simple — but it's early-stage and the plan/add-on split is unclear. |
| Feature Depth | 4/5 | Mature platform: covers, growth rates, feed wedges, full records and two satellite tiers, plus the AI layer. |
| Australian Fit | 5/5 | Tasmanian-built, AUD pricing (GST inclusive), AU phone line, AU data storage, back-to-back Tasmanian Export Award winner (2023–2024). |
| Reliability & Support | 3/5 | Established since 2014 with multi-region operation and a local phone line, but no stated uptime/SLA and Pio is early. |
Total: 18/25 — ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good.
Note on advice: Pio's agronomy, nutrition and animal-health suggestions don't replace a qualified agronomist, veterinarian or farm adviser. Treat its output as a prompt for a professional conversation, not a decision.

Frequently asked questions
Is Pasture.io an Australian company? Yes. The concept began on a North-West Tasmanian dairy farm in 2005, the company was established in 2014 by dairy farmer Oliver Roberts, and it's headquartered in Hobart. Source It won the Tasmanian Export Award (Advanced Technologies) in 2023 and again in 2024. Source
Do I need to buy hardware? No. Pasture measurement is done from satellite imagery, so there's no on-farm hardware and no manual walking required. You choose between weekly (Essential) or near-daily (Ultimate) flyovers.
Is my farm data stored in Australia? Partly. The privacy policy says data is stored on servers "based in Australia and overseas." Source When you use the Pio AI chat, your prompt, recent chat history, user name and farm context are sent to the language-model provider, and the policy names the United States among the overseas jurisdictions involved. Source If offshore data handling concerns you, factor that in.
Can I try it before paying? You can trial the base Fundamental app. The satellite add-ons (Essential and Ultimate) can't be trialled and are paid yearly, in full, on an annual contract. Source
Is the AI worth it on its own? No — and the vendor agrees, saying "this iteration is only the beginning." Source Buy Pasture.io for the satellite pasture measurement and the feed wedges. Treat Pio as a useful extra, not the reason to sign up.
