Legora (formerly Leya) Review: AI Legal Workspace for Australian Law Firms

The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.
Skip to the verdictVerdict (TL;DR): Legora is one of the fastest-growing legal AI platforms in the world — $550M raised, a $5.6B valuation, and design partnerships with MinterEllison and Allens in Australia. The platform is genuinely capable: a full AI legal workspace covering research, contract review, and document drafting, built on Azure with EU and US data residency options. The problem for most Australian firms is the price floor. Independent estimates put seats at USD $3,000 per year with a minimum of 10 seats — meaning a minimum annual commitment of around AUD $42,000 before GST (estimate). That immediately excludes smaller practices. For large and mid-tier Australian firms, however, this is now a serious option. This tool does not replace qualified legal advice.

What Legora is
Legora launched as Leya in Stockholm in 2022, backed by Y Combinator, and rebranded to Legora in February 2025 when it repositioned from an AI tool to a full AI operating system for legal teams. The name "Leya" has effectively been retired — if you are searching for it, this is the same product.
The company's trajectory has been exceptional. Legora raised $550M in a Series D led by Accel in March 2026, then extended the round to $600M with Nvidia and Atlassian joining in April 2026. The valuation hit $5.6B. That is not a small legal tech startup — that is a platform with the runway to sustain long-term development and market expansion.
The product is built as an AI workspace for lawyers rather than a point solution for one task. Core capabilities include:
- Legal research: AI-assisted research across legislation, case law, and uploaded documents
- Contract review: Clause extraction, risk analysis, obligation tracking, and redline suggestions
- Document drafting: AI-assisted drafting within the Legora workspace and via document templates
- Portal: A new product (announced 2026) for collaboration between law firms and in-house legal teams
- Agent Pro: Consumption-based autonomous agent workflows for complex multi-step legal tasks
The technical foundation is Azure OpenAI Service, with EU and US data residency options. The company operates under GDPR — its technical team is based in Stockholm — and holds SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, and ISO 42001 certifications.
What it costs in Australia
Legora does not publish pricing publicly. Based on multiple independent sources (not confirmed by primary source):
- Per seat: ~USD $3,000 per user per year
- Minimum commitment: 10 seats — floor of approximately USD $30,000 (~AUD $42,000 before GST) per year (estimate)
- Enterprise pricing: USD $5,000–8,000 per seat for larger law firm deployments (estimate)
- Agent Pro: Moving to consumption-based pricing — exact model not publicly disclosed
- Negotiability: Independent sources report initial quotes drop 40–60 per cent after negotiation (estimate)
No AUD pricing is published. No GST treatment is stated on the Legora website. Treat all figures above as estimates based on publicly available independent analysis, and confirm directly with Legora for an accurate quote.
One important note: Legora's Sydney office opened in 2025 with minimal staff. Local sales capability exists, but this is not a mature Australian business presence with Australian-facing pricing or contracts.
How it works in practice
The Legora workspace is browser-based and designed to replace the patchwork of research databases, document management systems, and general-purpose AI tools that most legal teams currently use.
A lawyer uploads documents — contracts, research papers, precedents, client files — and Legora's AI can search across them, extract key provisions, flag risks, and draft responses. The research capability draws on uploaded materials and, depending on configuration, external legal databases. The contract review module works clause by clause, producing structured analyses and redline suggestions.
The Portal product — announced in 2026, in design partnership with MinterEllison and Allens — is designed to let law firms share AI-assisted workspaces directly with in-house clients, creating a collaborative environment rather than emailing PDFs back and forth.
Agent Pro moves toward autonomous multi-step legal workflows: a lawyer specifies a task, and the AI agent works through it — researching, drafting, reviewing — without constant manual prompting at each step.
The Microsoft connection matters for data residency: Legora uses Azure, which has a confirmed Australian data centre region (Australia East, Australia Southeast). However, Legora has not publicly confirmed it offers Australian data residency as a standard option — EU and US residency are confirmed. This needs to be verified directly for Australian deployments.
What it does well
Breadth of the workspace. Unlike tools that do only contract review or only research, Legora aims to be the AI layer across the full legal workflow. For teams that want to consolidate tools, this is attractive.
Capital base and trajectory. $600M raised at a $5.6B valuation means Legora can sustain development at a pace that smaller legal AI competitors cannot. The platform is being actively built, not maintained.
Australian market investment. Sydney office open. MinterEllison and Allens confirmed as design partners for the Portal product. This is real market engagement, not just "available in Australia."
Strong security and compliance posture. SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, ISO 42001 (AI management systems), and GDPR compliance. For law firms with enterprise security requirements, this baseline is solid.
Azure infrastructure. Running on Azure OpenAI Service with EU and US data residency options, and the potential for AU residency via Azure's local regions — worth verifying directly.
What it doesn't do well
Price floor excludes most of the Australian market. The 10-seat minimum at ~USD $3,000 per seat puts Legora out of reach for the vast majority of Australian legal practices — sole practitioners, small boutique firms, community legal centres, and most in-house teams at smaller businesses. If your team has fewer than 10 lawyers with legal AI budget, Legora is not the right tool.
Primarily targets large firms. Multiple independent analyses note that Legora explicitly targets firms with 200+ lawyers. The product design, pricing, and implementation complexity reflect this. Smaller teams will struggle to get value in proportion to the investment.
No confirmed Australian data residency. Despite using Azure infrastructure that includes Australian regions, Legora has not published a confirmed AU data residency option. For Australian firms processing matters subject to the Privacy Act 1988, or handling government contracts with AU data requirements, this gap needs to be resolved contractually before deployment.
Legal professional privilege uncertainty. The question of whether AI-assisted legal research and drafting can be covered by legal professional privilege is an active issue in Australian law. Legora has not published Australian-specific guidance on this question.
No free trial. Demo requests are the entry point. There is no self-serve trial to evaluate the product before committing to a sales conversation.
This tool does not replace qualified legal advice. Legora is a workspace tool that assists qualified lawyers — it is not itself a legal adviser. Every output requires review by a qualified Australian legal practitioner before reliance or client delivery.
Australian fit
The Australian story for Legora is better than most international legal AI platforms. A Sydney office is open. MinterEllison and Allens — two of Australia's largest and most technically sophisticated law firms — are in design partnerships for the Portal product. Legora appeared in Silicon Republic coverage when it hit $5.55B valuation, and Australian legal technology media has tracked its growth.
The key unanswered question is data residency. Azure has AU data centres. Legora's published residency options are EU and US. Whether AU-region hosting is available, and at what cost premium, is not publicly confirmed (verify with Legora directly before signing).
The Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) applies to Australian firms processing personal information — which most legal matters involve. If data is processed offshore, Australian Privacy Principles apply to those transfers. Firms should seek Privacy Act advice on their specific Legora deployment.
The platform operates under GDPR with EU data residency by default for European customers. That rigour is a meaningful baseline — but Australian firms need Australian protections confirmed, not European ones inferred.
Australian Fit score: 3/5. AU office and design partnerships with major firms lift this above most offshore legal AI tools, but the data residency gap and price floor prevent a higher score.
Alternatives
- Harvey AI — the current category leader for enterprise legal AI in large Australian firms. Broader legal task coverage, similarly premium pricing.
- Spellbook — a more accessible, Word-native AI contract drafting and review tool. Better fit for mid-market Australian firms that do not need a full legal workspace.
- Juro — contract lifecycle management focus, confirmed AU customers, and more accessible pricing for in-house teams.

Bottom line
Legora is the most ambitious legal AI platform currently targeting the Australian market. The combination of a genuine AI workspace (not just a contract review point tool), serious capital behind it, and confirmed design partnerships with leading Australian law firms makes it worth tracking closely.
The honest verdict: right now, this is a tool for large Australian law firms with meaningful legal technology budgets, tolerance for complex procurement, and the resources to manage onboarding. If that is you — get the demo. If you are a smaller practice or in-house team, the price floor alone rules it out. Come back in 12 months and see where the consumption-based Agent Pro pricing lands.

Update history
- 9 Oct 2026 — Re-checked for the AUD-claim queue (#439) in a browser on an Australian connection: leya.law/pricing redirects to legora.com/pricing, which is a 404 page, and the Legora site carries no price in any currency, so the quote-only finding stands and the per-seat figures above remain third-party estimates, not re-verified.

Yes. Legora entered Australia in mid-2025 and has a Sydney office. MinterEllison and Allens are confirmed design partners for Legora's Portal product. The platform is available to Australian firms but has no confirmed Australian data residency option — EU and US residency are published; AU-region hosting via Azure should be verified directly with Legora.
How much does Legora cost?
Legora does not publish pricing. Based on independent estimates, pricing starts at approximately USD $3,000 per seat per year with a 10-seat minimum — a floor of around AUD $42,000 per year before GST at current exchange rates. Enterprise pricing for larger law firms may reach USD $5,000–8,000 per seat. These are estimates; confirm with Legora directly for a quote.
What is the difference between Leya and Legora?
They are the same product. The Stockholm-founded legal AI platform launched as Leya in 2022 and rebranded as Legora in February 2025 when it repositioned from an AI tool to a full AI operating system for legal teams. The leya.law domain now redirects to Legora. If you were searching for a Leya review, this is the current version of that platform.
