Verdict (TL;DR): LexisNexis's Lexis+ AI — now rebranded as Protégé — is a serious AI legal research and drafting platform with genuine Australian law coverage and local data hosting for its Legal AI mode. It competes directly with CoCounsel and is the better fit for firms already on LexisNexis's Lexis+ platform. Pricing is quote-based and enterprise-targeted. This tool does not replace qualified legal advice, and outputs require review by a qualified Australian legal practitioner before reliance or filing.

What Lexis+ AI is

Lexis+ AI is LexisNexis's generative AI legal platform for Australian lawyers. As of 2026, it has been rebranded under the name Protégé — though the product is still marketed and accessed through the Lexis+ AI platform. The two names refer to the same system: Protégé is the personalised AI assistant engine inside Lexis+ AI.

The platform offers three core capabilities. First, AI-powered legal research: ask a question in plain language, and Protégé grounds its answer in LexisNexis's authoritative Australian case law and legislation databases, with citations verified via CaseBase Case Citator. Second, full document drafting: generate first drafts of transactional documents, motions, memos, and correspondence, personalised to jurisdiction and drafting style. Third, document analysis: upload a contract or case file to Protégé Vault and interrogate it — find gaps, compare documents, generate timelines, identify counterarguments.

LexisNexis has an established presence in Australia. Australian customers are supported by a local team, a local phone number (1800 772 772), and a platform specifically configured for Australian jurisdictions. The AU-specific product page is live and clearly targeted at Australian law firms, corporate legal teams, government, and academia.

What it costs in Australia

Pricing is not published publicly. LexisNexis uses a quote-based model. The company explicitly states: "Lexis+ AI pricing varies based on factors such as the size of your organisation, specific capabilities required, and the scope of content access."

One publicly available reference point: a LexisNexis Queenslander Power Pack (a bundled AU state subscription) was listed at AUD $8,280 per year (AUD $690/month) on a three-year commitment as of 2026. [This is a specific AU product, not Lexis+ AI pricing per se; included only as a market orientation point.]

Independent market estimates (not from LexisNexis primary sources) suggest Lexis+ AI pricing in similar international markets runs from approximately AUD $200–475/user/month at mid-to-large firms, inclusive of base Lexis+ platform access. Australian firms should seek direct quotes.

To obtain pricing, contact LexisNexis Australia: 1800 772 772 or via the contact form at lexisnexis.com/en-au/products/lexis-plus-ai.

GST: Pricing from LexisNexis Australia will include GST treatment appropriate to Australian tax law. Confirm with the sales team whether quoted prices are inclusive or exclusive of GST.

How it works in practice

Lexis+ AI is accessed via a browser-based platform. The interface presents a familiar chat-style AI assistant (Protégé) alongside access to the Lexis+ research environment. Users can toggle between two AI configurations:

  • Protégé Legal AI: Responses are grounded in LexisNexis authoritative content. CaseBase citation checks are included. Best for legal research and analysis where accuracy and verifiability matter.
  • Protégé General AI: Access to GPT-5, GPT-4o, OpenAI o3, and Claude Sonnet 4 within the secure LexisNexis environment. Responses are not grounded in LexisNexis content but still benefit from CaseBase citation checking. Best for drafting communications, brainstorming, and general tasks.

Vault is the document repository feature. Upload up to 500 documents per Vault, across 50 Vaults. Protégé analyses Vault documents for the tasks you specify. Session uploads (not saved to a Vault) are purged at session end.

DMS integration is available with iManage, SharePoint, and other document management systems — a practical necessity for large law firms.

The Lexis Create+ add-in for Microsoft Word allows drafting to continue inside Word with AI assistance.

What it does well

Australian law content is the core product. LexisNexis has been selling Australian legal databases for decades. Lexis+ AI sits on top of that foundation. Research responses cite real Australian cases, verified with CaseBase Case Citator — the AU equivalent of KeyCite. This is not US law with an AU disclaimer bolted on.

Australian data hosting for Legal AI mode. LexisNexis explicitly confirms that Legal AI documents, conversations, and prompts are stored in the Australian region. For law firms with data sovereignty or professional privilege concerns, this matters. The General AI mode (which uses external LLMs like GPT-5 and Claude Sonnet 4) is not hosted in Australia — but LexisNexis maintains that the same security and privacy controls apply.

Clear AI model disclosure. LexisNexis publicly names the models available in Protégé: GPT-5, GPT-4o, OpenAI o3, and Claude Sonnet 4 for General AI; a proprietary multi-model blend for Legal AI. This transparency is unusual in the enterprise legal AI market.

Real Australian user stories. McCabes, Maguire Legal, Dymocks Legal, and Clifford Gouldson Lawyers have published case studies through LexisNexis. These are verifiable, named Australian clients — not anonymous testimonials.

Privacy controls are user-configurable. Users control personalisation settings. Data shared is not used to improve outputs for other users. Private AI models; no third-party access.

What it doesn't do well

No published pricing — again. Both of the major enterprise legal AI platforms for Australia (CoCounsel and Lexis+ AI) hide their pricing behind a sales conversation. For a market where trust is essential, this opacity is a friction point.

General AI mode not hosted in Australia. The General AI features — which include GPT-5 and Claude Sonnet 4 — process data outside Australia. For firms with strict data sovereignty requirements, this means the most powerful drafting configurations are off-limits or require careful policy review before use.

Rebranding creates confusion. The platform is called Lexis+ AI; the assistant inside it is now called Protégé. Some features are still marketed under the Lexis+ AI name, others under Protégé, others under Protégé Vault. For a product positioning itself on clarity and trust, the nomenclature is muddy.

Complexity for smaller firms. Protégé Vault, DMS integration, and multi-model AI selection are powerful but add cognitive overhead. Smaller firms may find the platform over-engineered for their needs.

This tool does not replace qualified legal advice. Protégé outputs — even those grounded in authoritative LexisNexis content — require review by a qualified Australian solicitor or barrister before reliance. CaseBase citation checks reduce hallucination risk on case citations but do not eliminate the need for legal judgment. Do not file or advise clients based on Protégé output alone.

Australian fit

Factor Assessment
Australian law coverage Yes — LexisNexis Australian case law, legislation, and Practical Guidance content
Data residency (Legal AI) Australia — Legal AI documents, prompts, and conversations are stored in AU region
Data residency (General AI) Not in Australia — external LLMs; same security controls maintained but not locally hosted
Privacy Act compliance RELX/LexisNexis operates under Australian Privacy Act; RELX Responsible AI Principles apply
Legal professional privilege Data not shared with third parties; user data not used to train others' models
AU pricing AUD pricing from LexisNexis Australia; no public price list; 1800 772 772
Local support Australian support team; AU-specific platform and product page

The data residency split between Legal AI (AU) and General AI (not AU) is the one material caveat. For firms using Legal AI mode — the primary use case — this is a genuine Australian-fit positive.

Alternatives

  • CoCounsel (Thomson Reuters) — the direct competitor; Westlaw-grounded; also AU data hosted; better litigation document analysis tools.
  • Harvey — US-built; strong in transactional law; less Australian law grounding; preferred by some Big Law firms.
  • Spellbook — more accessible contract review tool; focused on drafting; lower price point; less Australian law research depth.

Bottom line

Lexis+ AI (Protégé) is the right call for Australian law firms and in-house teams already on the LexisNexis platform — or those who want a serious, Australian-law-grounded alternative to Thomson Reuters' CoCounsel. The Legal AI mode's Australian data hosting is a real differentiator in the enterprise market. The General AI mode — with GPT-5 and Claude Sonnet 4 — adds genuine general-purpose power, though not from Australian servers.

The rebranding confusion and the pricing black box are irritants. Get a trial and test the platform specifically against Australian legal research tasks before committing to a contract.

This tool does not replace qualified legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lexis+ AI the same as Protégé?

Yes. Lexis+ AI is the platform; Protégé is the AI assistant engine within it. LexisNexis has been rebranding toward the Protégé name in 2025–2026, but both names refer to the same product. Australian users access it at lexisnexis.com/en-au/products/lexis-plus-ai.

Does Lexis+ AI cover Australian case law?

Yes. The Legal AI mode in Lexis+ AI (Protégé) is grounded in LexisNexis's Australian case law and legislation databases, with CaseBase Case Citator checking citations. This is the same authoritative Australian legal content LexisNexis has built over decades.

Where is Lexis+ AI data stored in Australia?

Legal AI documents, conversations, and prompts are stored in the Australian region. The General AI features (which use GPT-5, GPT-4o, and Claude Sonnet 4) are not hosted in Australia, though LexisNexis states the same security and privacy controls apply.

It is already framed in the body as a market-orientation point rather than Lexis+ AI pricing, and nothing else in this review depends on it, but it should be either re-sourced or cut at the next review — it is a specific dollar figure standing on a dead link.
