Scrunch Review Australia 2026: The AEO tool Sitecore just bought for US$225M

The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.
Skip to the verdictVerdict (TL;DR): Scrunch is one of the strongest pure-play tools in the new category everyone's suddenly talking about — answer-engine optimisation, or AEO. It does three things: it monitors whether your brand shows up when people ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot about your industry; it tells you why (which sources the AI trusts, where your site can't be crawled); and through its Agent Experience Platform (AXP) it serves a machine-readable version of your site built for AI crawlers. It's good enough that Sitecore acquired it on 3 June 2026 for a reported US$225M. The catch for Australians is the usual one, only sharper: pricing is in US dollars with no AUD option, there's no Australian data-hosting region, and Scrunch's own FAQ says it "currently serves customers throughout the US, Europe, and Japan" — Australia isn't on the list. Paid plans start around US$250/month (about A$350 before tax), with the real enterprise pricing quote-only. For an Australian marketing team that has decided AEO is now a budget line, Scrunch is a serious, capable option — especially if you're already a Sitecore shop. For a sole trader or small business just checking whether ChatGPT names them, it's expensive, US-centric, and more tool than you need. Capable product, wrong fit for most Australian SMBs.

What Scrunch is
Scrunch is an AI search visibility platform — it sits in the category variously called AEO (answer engine optimisation), GEO (generative engine optimisation) or AI search optimisation. The plain-English version: when your customers stop Googling and start asking an AI assistant "who's a good [your industry] in [city]?", Scrunch tells you whether the AI names you, what it says about you, and how to improve both.
The company was founded in 2023 by Chris Andrew and Robert MacCloy, and raised US$26M from Mayfield, Decibel, Homebrew, GTM Capital and a roster of angels (including people from PillPack, Webflow and Meta AI). It describes itself as "the leading AI search optimization team." It says it is "trusted by 500+ companies and agencies," naming customers like Lenovo, Skims, Crunchbase and Penn State.
The headline event, though, is that on 3 June 2026 Sitecore acquired Scrunch to fold its AEO capability into Sitecore's digital experience platform. The deal was reported at about US$225M by Bloomberg and Adweek [secondary-sourced; vendor undisclosed]; Sitecore's own press release announces the acquisition but does not disclose the figure. That matters for this review in two ways: it validates that Scrunch is a real, category-leading product (you don't pay nine figures for vapour), and it puts the product into a transition where pricing, packaging and roadmap may shift. We flag that below.
The platform has three parts:
- Monitoring — tracks your brand's mentions, citations, rankings and "share of voice" across the major AI surfaces (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, and Scrunch references Meta AI too), with prompt-level analytics, competitor benchmarking by persona/topic/geography, and a view of which AI bots are actually crawling your site.
- Insights — citation analysis (which sources the AI is leaning on when it answers about your category), crawlability error detection, and optimisation guidance on what to fix.
- Agent Experience Platform (AXP) — the genuinely distinctive bit. AXP serves a lightweight, structured, machine-readable version of your website that AI crawlers consume in parallel to your normal human-facing site, organising your brand into "entities, attributes, and verified claims." Scrunch cites an Akamai result of a 364% increase in brand presence for non-branded prompts and a 218% increase in citations on AXP-enabled pages, and a Runpod result of a 400% increase in paying customers tied to its AI-search work. Treat those as vendor-supplied case-study figures, not independent benchmarks.
That's a fuller stack than most rivals in this young category. Where a tool like Otterly.AI just monitors, Scrunch monitors, diagnoses, and ships a delivery layer to fix the problem.
What it costs in Australia
Here's the honest position. Scrunch publishes entry-level pricing — which is more transparent than the category norm — but the numbers come with two Australian caveats: the currency isn't stated on the page (it is almost certainly US dollars, but Scrunch doesn't say so), and the site is mid-transition after the Sitecore acquisition, so its pricing page and its pricing FAQ currently show slightly different tier names and limits. We've shown the pricing-page version as the primary, with the FAQ differences noted.
| Plan | Price ($ — currency not stated) | Approx AUD before tax (≈1.40) | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free trial | $0, 7 days | — | Starter features: 350 custom prompts, 3 personas, 5 page audits, 3 user licences. (The pricing page says "no credit card required"; the pricing FAQ says "A credit card is required; you'll be upgraded after the trial unless you cancel" — the two pages contradict each other, so confirm in-app) |
| Core (brands) | $250/mo — the only figure Scrunch still publishes (24 Sep 2026). Was $250 annual / $300 month-to-month. | ≈ A$351 | 3 user licences, 350 custom prompts, 1,000 industry prompts, 3 personas, 5 page audits. (The pricing FAQ calls this tier "Core" and lists different limits — 125 prompts, 5 user licences, 4 LLMs — so the two pages disagree on both the name and what's included) |
| Growth (brands) | $417/mo billed annually, or $500/mo month-to-month | ≈ A$584 / A$700 | 5 user licences, 700 custom prompts, 2,500 industry prompts, 5 personas, 10 page audits |
| Enterprise (brands) | Custom — quote only | n/a (quote only) | Growth/Core features plus SAML/OIDC SSO, Enterprise Data API, dedicated go-to-market team, expanded scale, nine LLMs supported |
| Agency Core | $500/mo | ≈ A$700 | Multi-client agency tier |
| Agency Enterprise | Custom — quote only | n/a (quote only) | Enterprise agency tier |
Pricing as of 23 June 2026, taken from Scrunch's pricing page and its pricing FAQ. Annual billing carries a stated 17% discount ("effectively 2 months free"). The billing currency is not stated anywhere on either page — every figure is written as a bare "$" — so we report it as such; it is almost certainly USD given the company's US base and its stated US/Europe/Japan service footprint, but Scrunch does not say so. AUD figures are at US$1 ≈ A$1.40 and exclude any tax. Whether Australian GST is added, included, or not collected is (not published) — Scrunch's billing pages don't address it.
Value verdict: For what it is — a deep, three-layer AEO platform now backed by a major DXP vendor — the entry price isn't outrageous by category standards (Profound's comparable tier sits higher, around US$399/mo for Growth). But it lands awkwardly for an Australian buyer. You're paying a US-dollar amount that moves with the exchange rate, you can't see what the enterprise tier actually costs without booking a demo, and the genuinely differentiating capability (AXP, enterprise security, the Data API, more than five LLMs) sits behind that quote-only wall. A small Australian business that just wants to know "does ChatGPT mention me?" is overpaying here; this is priced and built for marketing teams and agencies, not sole traders.
How it works in practice
The monitoring layer is the part most Australian buyers will actually use day to day. You define a set of prompts — the questions a customer might ask an AI about your category — plus competitors and personas, and Scrunch reports how often you're named across the AI engines, your share of voice, and how that's trending. The competitor and persona/geography benchmarking is more sophisticated than the cheaper monitors in this category, and the AI-bot crawl view (seeing which crawlers actually reach your site) is a practical, concrete thing to act on.
The insights layer is where it earns the "optimisation" label rather than just "monitoring." Citation analysis tells you which sources the AI trusts when it answers about your industry — useful, because the fix for poor AI visibility is often "get cited by the sources the AI already trusts," not "rewrite your homepage."
AXP is the ambitious part and the reason Sitecore paid up. Instead of just telling you you're invisible to AI crawlers, it serves a structured, compressed version of your site built for them. It's also the part that needs real technical deployment and sits in the higher tiers — this is not a set-and-forget toggle for a non-technical owner. Post-acquisition, Scrunch's recommendations are being automated inside SitecoreAI's content and asset-management tools, which will be a genuine advantage if you're already on Sitecore and largely irrelevant if you're not.
What it does well
- A complete AEO stack, not just a monitor. Monitoring, diagnosis (citations, crawl errors) and a delivery layer (AXP) in one platform — broader than most pure-plays in this young category.
- AXP is a real differentiator. A machine-readable site surface built for AI agents is a more concrete answer to "we're invisible to AI" than another dashboard. The vendor case-study numbers (Akamai, Runpod) are striking, if not independently verified.
- Broad engine coverage. Tracks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot (and references Meta AI), with the enterprise tier citing nine LLMs.
- Enterprise-grade security and validation. SOC 2 Type II completed, role-based access, SAML/OIDC on enterprise — and a US$225M acquisition by Sitecore is about as strong a third-party vote of confidence as a 2023 startup can get.
- More pricing transparency than the category norm. Published Starter/Growth prices and a free trial, where many AEO rivals are demo-only.
Watch out for
- No AUD billing. Pricing is in US dollars (and the page doesn't even state the currency explicitly), so your real cost moves with the exchange rate.
- GST treatment unstated. Scrunch's billing pages don't say whether Australian GST is added, included, or not collected, and there's no mention of ABN tax invoices — confirmed absent on both the pricing page and the FAQ as at 23 June 2026, and a gap for any AU business claiming the spend. (only resolvable against an actual AU invoice)
- No Australian data residency, and Australia isn't in the serviced regions. Scrunch's FAQ says it "currently serves customers throughout the US, Europe, and Japan." It does not name Australia, and there's no AU data-hosting region disclosed. You can almost certainly still sign up, but you're a customer outside the stated footprint.
- The real product is quote-only. AXP at scale, the Data API, more than five LLMs and enterprise security all sit behind "book a demo." You can't price a serious deployment without sales contact, which slows evaluation and hides the true cost.
- Acquisition transition. Sitecore closed the deal on 3 June 2026 and is folding Scrunch into its DXP. Standalone pricing, packaging and the product roadmap may change; the current site already shows inconsistent tier names. Buy with that in mind.
- Not a tool for a non-technical sole trader. This is built for marketing teams and agencies. The setup, the AXP deployment and the price all assume someone whose job is this.
Australian fit
- Available in Australia: Likely yes — it's a web platform with no stated regional lockout — but note that Scrunch's own FAQ lists its served regions as the US, Europe and Japan, and does not mention Australia. There is no formal statement of Australian support either way; treat AU as "outside the stated footprint" rather than "confirmed supported."
- Pricing in AUD: No. Pricing is in a bare "$" with no currency stated on the page (almost certainly USD), and there is no native AUD option. Approx AUD at 1.40: Starter ≈ A$350/mo (annual), Growth ≈ A$646/mo (annual) — before any tax.
- GST: (not published). No mention of GST, ABN invoices or Australian tax handling anywhere on the billing pages — confirmed absent on both the pricing page and the FAQ, so this can only be resolved against an actual AU invoice or a vendor billing reply.
- Data residency: None for Australia. No AU data-hosting region disclosed anywhere on the site. SOC 2 Type II is in place, which speaks to security controls but not to where your data physically sits.
- Certifications: SOC 2 Type II completed (independent third-party audit, per Scrunch's FAQ). No ISO 27001 or IRAP is advertised — the FAQ names SOC 2 Type II only.
- Local support: None AU-specific. No Australian office or local-hours support line disclosed; support hours aren't stated and the serviced regions are US/Europe/Japan.
- AU-aware outputs: Geography-aware monitoring is supported (you can benchmark by region), so you can track Australian-market prompts — but the product, pricing and support are built around a US/Europe/Japan customer base, not an Australian one.
Alternatives
| Tool | Why you might prefer it |
|---|---|
| Profound | The other category heavyweight, often treated as the benchmark for enterprise AEO. Also USD-billed and US-centric, so no AU pricing advantage — but worth comparing head-to-head on monitoring depth and engine coverage. |
| Otterly.AI | The cheapest serious entry point (around US$29/mo). If you only want ongoing monitoring of whether you appear in AI answers — not a full optimisation-and-delivery stack — it's far better value for a small AU business. |
| Peec AI | EU-built, EUR-priced, transparent pricing and multi-country tracking. A more transparent (and arguably more international-friendly) alternative to the US pure-plays. |
| HubSpot AI Search Grader | Free. If you just want a one-off read on how AI describes your brand before spending anything, start here — especially if you already use HubSpot. |
Bottom line
Scrunch is a genuinely strong product. In a category most Australian businesses have only just heard of, it's one of the few tools that does the whole job — tells you whether AI names you, diagnoses why, and ships a delivery layer (AXP) to fix it. The SOC 2 Type II audit, the 500-plus customer base and a US$225M acquisition by Sitecore all say this is the real thing, not a thin wrapper around a few API calls.
But this is The AI Directory Australia, and on the things we weigh hardest, Scrunch underperforms. It bills in US dollars without even stating the currency, it says nothing about GST or ABN invoices, it discloses no Australian data-hosting region, and its own FAQ names the US, Europe and Japan as its served regions while leaving Australia off the list. The capability that justifies the price — AXP at scale, the Data API, broader engine coverage — is locked behind quote-only enterprise pricing, and the whole platform is now mid-transition into Sitecore's stack.
It scores 17 — Very Good, but no higher — because the product is excellent while the Australian fit is weak, and there's genuine post-acquisition uncertainty. We'd recommend Scrunch to an Australian marketing team or agency that has decided AEO is now a real budget line and can absorb USD pricing and US-centric support — and especially to anyone already running Sitecore. We would not point a sole trader or small business here: start with HubSpot's free grader, then Otterly for cheap ongoing monitoring, and only look at Scrunch when AEO has become someone's actual job. We'll refresh this review once the Sitecore integration settles and if Scrunch introduces AUD billing, an AU data region, or clearer enterprise pricing.
Score
| Criterion | Score | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Value for Money | 3/5 | Published entry price is reasonable for the category, but USD-only with no stated currency, and the differentiating capability sits behind quote-only enterprise pricing |
| Ease of Use | 3/5 | Monitoring is approachable; AXP deployment and the higher tiers are demo-gated and technical — built for marketing teams, not a non-technical owner |
| Feature Depth | 5/5 | Among the deepest in the category — monitoring, citation/crawl insights and a machine-readable delivery layer (AXP) across 5–9 AI engines |
| Australian Fit | 2/5 | No AUD billing, GST unstated, no AU data residency, and Australia isn't in the stated US/Europe/Japan service footprint |
| Reliability & Support | 4/5 | SOC 2 Type II, 500+ customers and now Sitecore-backed — strong — but no AU support and real post-acquisition transition risk |
| Total | 17/25 | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good |
Australian Fit gate: a five-star rating requires Australian Fit ≥ 4/5. Scrunch scores 2/5 on Australian Fit, so it could not wear five stars regardless of its raw total — and at 17/25 it sits comfortably in the four-star band in any case. See our Methodology page.
Update history
- 24 Sep 2026 🇦🇺 CORRECTION — Scrunch collapsed four published prices into one. Verified 24 September 2026 in a browser on an Australian connection, both the For brands and For agencies views. The pricing page now lists exactly two tiers: Core at US$250/mo, and Enterprise at “Talk to us”. The $300 month-to-month rate, the Growth tier at $417/$500, and Agency Core at $500 are all gone —
$250is the only dollar figure anywhere on the page. Core's inclusions changed too, and not in the buyer's favour on the metric that matters: it now carries 125 unique prompts where this review recorded 350, alongside 5 site audits a month, 1 brand workspace, 5 user licences (up from 3) and 4 LLMs covered. Enterprise carries 9. A 7-day free trial is new. Context worth holding: this review already records that Sitecore acquired Scrunch in June 2026 for about US$225M, and a post-acquisition retreat from published pricing into “talk to us” is the shape an acquisition usually leaves. The superseded figures are kept visible above rather than deleted — they were true on 23 June — but nothing but the $250 should be quoted as current. Currency: the page names none at all;aud_native: false. Closes this tool's row on the AUD claim queue.
Frequently asked questions
Is Scrunch available in Australia?
Almost certainly yes — it's a web platform with no stated regional lockout — but with an important caveat: Scrunch's own FAQ says it "currently serves customers throughout the US, Europe, and Japan," and does not name Australia. There's no Australian office, no local-hours support line disclosed, and no AU data-hosting region. You can likely sign up, but you'd be a customer outside its stated footprint.
Does Scrunch charge in AUD?
No. Pricing is in US dollars (the page doesn't even state the currency explicitly), with no native AUD option. Paid plans start at about US$250/month billed annually (roughly A$350 before tax). Whether Australian GST is added or an ABN tax invoice is issued is unclear — Scrunch's billing pages don't address it.
Is there a free plan or trial?
There's a 7-day free trial of the entry (Starter/Core) plan, with the starter feature set. Note that Scrunch's pricing page and its pricing FAQ currently contradict each other: the pricing page says "no credit card required," while the pricing FAQ says "A credit card is required; you'll be upgraded after the trial unless you cancel." Confirm in-app before signing up. There's no permanently free tier.
Wasn't Scrunch acquired by Sitecore?
Yes. Sitecore announced the acquisition of Scrunch on 3 June 2026, reportedly for about US$225M (Sitecore's own release confirms the deal but doesn't disclose the price). Scrunch's recommendations and its Agent Experience Platform are being folded into Sitecore's digital experience platform. That's a strong vote of confidence in the product, but it also means pricing, packaging and roadmap may change — the current site already shows some inconsistency.
Who is Scrunch best for?
Australian marketing teams and agencies that have decided answer-engine optimisation is now a real budget line — and especially organisations already running Sitecore. A sole trader or small business that just wants to check whether ChatGPT names them should start with HubSpot's free AI Search Grader, then a cheaper monitor like Otterly.AI, before considering Scrunch.
