Verdict (TL;DR): Profound is the name the rest of this category gets compared to. When your customers ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Copilot "who's a good [accountant / SaaS / retailer] for this?", Profound tells you whether your brand gets named, what the AI says about you, who it names instead, and which sources it cites to get there. It tracks more answer engines than anyone — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, Grok, Meta AI and DeepSeek — and adds crawler analytics and AEO content tools on top. It is genuinely the deepest tool in the category. The catch for an Australian buyer is who it's built for. Profound raised a US$96M round at a US$1 billion valuation in February 2026 (announced 24 February) and has pivoted hard upmarket: its customer wall is Walmart, Target, Figma and MongoDB, not Australian small business. Pricing is US dollars only, there's no AUD option, no AU support and no Australian data hosting, the public entry plan (US$99/month) tracks ChatGPT alone, and real multi-engine work starts at US$399/month — with the full platform now quoted on a sales call. It's excellent at its job and well secured (SOC 2 Type 2), but it's an enterprise tool sold to a global market, and Australians are not the market it's chasing.

What Profound is

Profound is an AI search visibility platform — the discipline the industry has started calling AEO (answer engine optimisation) or GEO (generative engine optimisation). The simple version: SEO told you where you ranked on Google. Profound tells you whether you show up at all when someone asks an AI assistant instead of searching.

That's a real and fast-moving question in 2026. Profound's own homepage leans on the line that "over 100 million people search with AI every day," and the whole category exists because organic search traffic is leaking to ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. If a customer asks an assistant for a recommendation and your business isn't named — or worse, is described wrongly — you've lost a sale you never saw.

Profound is the company that defined this category and, by most accounts, still leads it. It raised a US$96 million Series C at a US$1 billion valuation, announced 24 February 2026, led by Lightspeed alongside Sequoia and Kleiner Perkins (and Evantic, Saga Ventures and South Park Commons), and counts Walmart, Target, Figma, MongoDB, Charlotte Tilbury, US Bank and Gamma among named customers. That funding and that logo wall matter for this review, because they tell you exactly who Profound is building for.

The platform splits into monitoring and creation:

  • Answer Engine Insights — tracks how often, and how, your brand appears in AI answers across the engines, with competitor comparison and sentiment.
  • Prompt Volumes — estimates what people are actually asking the AI engines, so you can prioritise the prompts that matter rather than guessing.
  • Agent Analytics — shows how the AI crawlers (GPTBot, PerplexityBot and the rest) are visiting and reading your site.
  • Shopping — monitors product-level visibility in AI answers, aimed at retailers and brands.
  • Agents — AEO content tools, including an FAQ generator that writes pages shaped for AI answers.

The headline strength is breadth of engine coverage. Where many rivals track three or four engines, Profound's enterprise tier covers nine: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Grok, Meta AI and DeepSeek. For the category, that's the benchmark.

What it costs in Australia

Here's where the picture gets awkward for an Australian buyer, and not only because of the currency.

Profound bills in US dollars only — there is no native AUD pricing. And in 2026 the company has quietly reshaped how it sells. On 6 September 2026 the public pricing page shows the self-serve ladder again — Starter US$99/month and Growth US$399/month, billed yearly with "2 months free" — alongside a "Get a Demo" call that routes serious buyers to custom enterprise quotes. The widely-cited Starter and Growth prices below still appear across review and comparison sites, and remain useful buying signals, but they are no longer a guaranteed checkout price — and there's no free trial on the self-serve tiers.

Plan Price (USD/month) Approx AUD (≈1.40) What you get
Starter US$99 (US$82.50 billed annually) ≈ AUD$139 ChatGPT only. 50 tracked prompts, ~1,500 responses/month, basic insights and reporting, email support
Growth US$399 (US$332.50 billed annually) ≈ AUD$559 3 engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews), 100 prompts, ~9,000 responses/month, AEO content generation
Enterprise Custom (sales-led) (not published) All ~9 engines, multiple brands, Prompt Volumes, Agent Analytics, API access, SSO/SAML, SOC 2 documentation, custom limits

Pricing as of 23 June 2026, re-verified on Profound's own pricing page on 6 September 2026: Starter US$99 and Growth US$399 per month are shown there (billed yearly, two months free); Enterprise is "Get a Demo". AUD figures are our conversions at ~1.40, ex-GST.

Value verdict: Read the table again and the real cost reveals itself. The US$99 Starter plan tracks ChatGPT and nothing else — useful as a first look, but you're not seeing how you appear in Gemini, Copilot or Perplexity, which is half the point. Genuine multi-engine monitoring starts at US$399/month (≈ AUD$559), and the features Profound is actually famous for — Prompt Volumes, Agent Analytics, the full engine spread — sit behind a custom enterprise quote that begins with a sales call. Independent pricing trackers put Profound at roughly 48% above the category average (secondary pricing trackers, not a Profound figure). For a large Australian brand with budget and a team, it can be worth it. For a sole trader or small business who just wants to know what ChatGPT says about them, this is a lot of money pointed at the wrong customer.

How it works in practice

You give Profound your domain and a set of prompts — the questions a customer might type into an AI assistant — and it reports back how often you're named in the answers, what's said about you, which competitors come up instead, and which web sources the AI leaned on to answer. That last part is the genuinely clever bit: knowing why an engine recommends a competitor (which page it cited) tells you what to fix, not just that you have a problem.

Prompt Volumes is the feature that separates the leader from the pack. Rather than you guessing which prompts matter, Profound estimates real demand across the engines, so a team can focus effort on the questions customers actually ask. Agent Analytics then closes the loop by showing whether the AI crawlers are even reaching your content. Combined, they answer the full chain: are the bots reading my site, am I showing up in answers, and what do I change.

The honest limit is that this depth is wasted on a small operator. If you run a suburban accounting firm, you don't need nine-engine coverage and crawler analytics — you need to know what ChatGPT and Gemini say about accountants in your suburb, once a month. Profound can tell you that, but it's a freight train sent to pick up the milk.

What it does well

  • The widest engine coverage in the category. Up to nine answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, Grok, Meta AI and DeepSeek. Most rivals track three or four. This is the benchmark others are measured against.
  • It tells you why, not just whether. Profound surfaces the sources an engine cited to recommend a competitor, which turns monitoring into an actionable to-do list.
  • Prompt Volumes is a real differentiator. Estimating what people actually ask the engines — rather than tracking a list you guessed — is the feature most cheaper tools don't have.
  • Properly secured. Profound holds SOC 2 Type 2 certification (achieved 10 June 2025), with AES-256 encryption at rest and TLS 1.2+ in transit, and runs a public Trust Center that also lists HIPAA. That clears the first hurdle most enterprise procurement teams set.
  • Backed to last. A US$96M round at a US$1B valuation and a customer list of Walmart, Target and Figma mean this isn't a tool likely to disappear mid-subscription — a real consideration in a category this young.

What to watch out for

  • USD billing only, no AUD. You pay a US-dollar amount that moves with the exchange rate. There is no native Australian pricing.
  • GST treatment isn't published. Profound doesn't state on its public pages how it handles Australian GST or whether it issues an ABN tax invoice (no Profound primary source found). Confirm before you buy if a claimable invoice matters to you.
  • No Australian data residency. Profound is a US company and does not advertise an Australian (or any non-US) hosting region (no data-residency statement found on Profound's site). For a regulated Australian organisation, that's a question to put to their sales team directly.
  • The cheap plan barely counts. US$99 tracks ChatGPT alone. The plan most buyers actually need is US$399, and the full platform is a custom enterprise quote — the real bill is rarely the headline.
  • Sales-led, no self-serve trial. The public pricing page now routes to a demo call rather than a checkout, and there's no free trial on the entry tiers. You can't quietly test it before committing.
  • Built for enterprise, sold to enterprise. The funding, the pivot and the logo wall all point the same way. An Australian small business is not the customer Profound is optimising for, and it shows in the price and the buying process.

Australian fit

  • Available in Australia: Yes — it's a web platform with no regional lockout. But there's no AU office, no AU-specific onboarding, and the buying process runs through a US sales team.
  • Pricing in AUD: No. USD only, no native AUD option. Approx AUD at 1.40: Starter ≈ $153, Growth ≈ $618; Enterprise is a custom quote (not published).
  • GST: Not published. Profound doesn't state its Australian GST handling or whether it issues an ABN tax invoice (checked pricing page and site 23 Jun 2026; no GST/tax-invoice statement published). Confirm before purchase.
  • Data residency: None advertised for Australia. Profound is US-based and publishes no AU (or non-US) hosting region (checked homepage, SOC 2 blog and Trust Center 23 Jun 2026; no hosting-region statement published). A consideration for regulated organisations.
  • Certifications: SOC 2 Type 2 (10 June 2025) and HIPAA (per its Trust Center), AES-256 / TLS 1.2+. No ISO 27001 or IRAP advertised — IRAP being the certification Australian government buyers usually ask for.
  • Local support: None AU-specific. Email support on the entry tier; enterprise support and a Trust Center exist, but on US hours.
  • AU-aware outputs: Partial. You set your own prompts, so you can absolutely track Australian queries and suburbs — but nothing about the product is localised for Australia, and the AEO content tools default to US English.

The short version: Profound works perfectly well from Australia, but it does nothing for Australians specifically. No AUD, no local support, no AU hosting, no published GST handling. The SOC 2 Type 2 certification is a genuine plus and lifts the floor — but it doesn't change the fact that this is a US enterprise tool a long way from an Australian small-business buyer.

Alternatives

Tool Why you might prefer it
Otterly.AI The cheap, sensible entry point. From around US$29/month, it monitors your brand across several AI engines without a sales call — the right size for an Australian SMB that just wants ongoing monitoring. Still USD, so no AU pricing advantage.
Peec AI EU-built, with transparent self-serve pricing (from around $95/month ≈ A$133 — Peec prints a bare dollar sign and names no currency) and multi-country coverage including Australia. The clearest "you can just sign up and pay" alternative, and the one to compare on price.
HubSpot AI Search Grader Free. If you only want a one-off read on how AI describes your brand before paying for anything, start here — especially if you already use HubSpot.
Scrunch AI Another serious, SOC 2 Type II enterprise option (from around US$250/month) if you've shortlisted Profound and want a direct enterprise comparison.
Your existing Semrush or Ahrefs subscription Both now include AI-visibility tracking. If you already pay for one, check whether it covers this before buying a second tool — you may already have a usable version of what Profound sells.

Bottom line

Profound deserves its reputation. It tracks more answer engines than anyone, it tells you why the AI recommends a competitor and not just that it does, Prompt Volumes is a real edge, and it's properly secured and properly funded. If you're a large Australian brand — a retailer, a national SaaS company, a consumer name — with budget and a marketing team who'll use this daily, Profound is a defensible buy and arguably the category benchmark.

But this is The AI Directory Australia, and we weigh local fit hardest. On that test Profound underperforms: USD-only billing, no AUD, no published GST handling, no Australian data hosting, no local support, and a sales-led enterprise process with no free trial. The entry plan tracks ChatGPT alone; the plan you'd actually want starts at US$399; the famous features are a custom quote. None of that is built with an Australian small business in mind.

It scores 16 — Very Good — because the product is excellent while the Australian fit is weak. We'd recommend it to large AU brands that need its depth and can absorb the USD cost and the enterprise buying process. We would not point a sole trader or small business here: start with HubSpot's free grader, then Otterly or Peec AI for ongoing monitoring, and only graduate to Profound if you outgrow them. We'll refresh this if Profound introduces AUD billing, an Australian data region, or self-serve transparency for smaller buyers.

Score

Criterion Score Notes
Value for Money 2/5 US$99 tracks ChatGPT only; real multi-engine work starts at US$399 and the full platform is a custom enterprise quote. Priced ~48% above the category average and pitched at large brands, not AU SMBs
Ease of Use 3/5 Clean, capable product, but enterprise positioning, no free trial and a mandatory sales call raise the bar to even start
Feature Depth 5/5 The deepest tool in the category — up to nine answer engines, Prompt Volumes, Agent Analytics, source-level insight and AEO content tools
Australian Fit 2/5 USD-only billing, no AUD, no published GST handling, no AU data residency, no local support. SOC 2 Type 2 is the one clear plus
Reliability & Support 4/5 SOC 2 Type 2, AES-256/TLS, a public Trust Center, US$1B-backed with enterprise customers and strong docs — but US-hours, sales-led support
Total 16/25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good

Australian Fit gate: five stars and a category Top Pick both require Australian Fit ≥ 4/5. Profound scores 2/5 on local fit, so it is capped at four stars and cannot be named the category Top Pick, regardless of its strength elsewhere. See our Methodology page.

Update history
  • 21 Sep 2026 — Peec AI and Otterly.AI figures re-cut after a browser check of both vendor pages. Peec no longer shows an Australian a euro price: its plans read $95 / $245 / $495 a month ($80 / $205 / $420 annual), not €85 / €205 / €425, and the vendor names no currency at all — bare $, no selector, nothing in its Terms of Use. The euro-only claim has been dropped here; what stands is that neither tool has an AUD price. Otterly's US$29 / US$189 / US$489 are unchanged, but the A$ figures beside them were still on the retired 1.55 basis. Everything is now converted at USD→AUD 1.4045 (ECB, 18 September 2026). No score changes. Detail: Ghost-Ready/review-peec-ai-australia-2026-06-23.md, 21 Sep 2026 entry.

Frequently asked questions

Is Profound available in Australia?

Yes — it's a web platform with no regional lockout, so you can use it from Australia. But there's no Australian office, no local support hours, and the buying process runs through a US sales team. Nothing about the product is localised for Australia.

Does Profound charge in AUD?

No. Profound bills in US dollars only, with no native AUD option. The public entry plan is US$99/month (about A$139) and tracks ChatGPT alone; real multi-engine monitoring starts at US$399/month (about A$559). The full platform is a custom enterprise quote. How Profound handles Australian GST isn't published, so confirm that before you buy if a claimable invoice matters.

Is there a free trial of Profound?

Not on the self-serve tiers, and the public pricing page now routes serious buyers to a demo call rather than a checkout. If you want to test how AI describes your brand for free first, HubSpot's AI Search Grader is a no-cost starting point.

Does Profound store data in Australia?

Not that it advertises. Profound is a US company and publishes no Australian (or other non-US) hosting region. It does hold SOC 2 Type 2 certification with AES-256 encryption at rest and TLS 1.2+ in transit, but for a regulated Australian organisation the lack of an AU data region and of IRAP certification is a question to put to its sales team directly.

Who is Profound best for?

Large Australian brands — retailers, national SaaS firms, consumer names — with budget and a marketing team that will use AI-visibility data daily. It's the deepest tool in the category. A sole trader or small business should start with HubSpot's free grader, move to Otterly or Peec AI for cheap ongoing monitoring, and only consider Profound after outgrowing them.

Secondary (context / pricing cross-check only — not relied on as primary): That Marketing Buddy and Trakkr pricing trackers were used to cross-check the Starter US$99 (ChatGPT only, 50 prompts) and Growth US$399 (3 engines, 100 prompts) figures and the "two months free on annual / no free trial / sales-led enterprise" details, and Fortune's Feb 2026 funding report to cross-check the round. Profound's own pricing page currently shows enterprise/sales-led pricing, so the self-serve dollar figures are marked as buying signals to re-confirm in-account, not guaranteed checkout prices. The "~48% above category average" pricing-position claim originates from a secondary pricing tracker and is flagged (not confirmed by the vendor).
