Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).

Verdict (TL;DR): Smartcat is the better choice than Lokalise if you need both AI translation and the option to commission human translators from a single platform. The Basic plan at USD $1,200/year (around AUD $1,680 ex-GST) brings it within reach of mid-sized Australian businesses. The catch: Marketplace access is not included in Basic, the AI features are evolving fast in ways that make the pricing hard to predict, and your data sits on offshore servers.

Score: 14/25 — ⭐⭐⭐ Good

What Smartcat is

Smartcat is an AI-native platform for global content creation, translation, and localisation. Founded in 2016 and headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware (USA), it has positioned itself as a full-cycle solution: rather than just being a translation management system (TMS), it combines an AI translation engine with a marketplace of more than a million professional translators and linguists.

The pitch is that you can automate the straightforward work with AI, and tap human experts when accuracy and nuance matter — without switching tools. For businesses translating regulated content, sensitive communications, or brand-critical material, that hybrid model is genuinely valuable.

In 2026, Smartcat has leaned hard into AI Agents — automated workflows that can simultaneously create, translate, and localise content across 280+ languages. The platform also offers video translation and AI dubbing, OCR for documents and images, and a website translation feature. Enterprise clients include more than 20% of the Fortune 500, per the company's own marketing.

Smartcat raised USD $43 million in September 2024. As of mid-2026, it remains a private company.

What it costs in Australia

Smartcat prices in USD. There is no AUD billing option.

Plan USD/year USD/month equiv. AUD approx/year (×1.40)
Free trial 15 days — —
Adapt (was Basic) From $1,200/yr ~$100/mo ~$1,680/yr
Accelerate From $24,000/yr ~$2,000/mo ~$33,600/yr
Anticipate From $60,000/yr ~$5,000/mo ~$84,000/yr
Autonomous (was Enterprise) Custom — —

Prices sourced directly from smartcat.com/pricing as of 26 June 2026, re-read 30 September 2026 (plans renamed and two tiers added since). Exchange rate: 1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD. GST will likely apply on top for Australian customers — confirm with Smartcat's billing team whether they issue Australian tax invoices.

The Basic plan starts at USD $1,200/year, which is notably cheaper than Lokalise's Explorer tier on an annual basis. However, the Basic plan includes only one Collaborative Space and excludes Marketplace access — meaning you cannot commission human translators from the same account without upgrading.

Since June Smartcat has renamed its plans and filled the gap it used to have: Adapt (the old Basic, from US$1,200 a year), Accelerate (from US$24,000, adding marketplace experts and a reviewer coworker), Anticipate (from US$60,000, adding API access and SSO) and Autonomous (custom, the old Enterprise). The step from the entry plan to the next is still twenty-fold.

Important: Smartcat's AI translation usage is billed separately, on a pay-as-you-go or prepayment basis depending on your plan. Total costs can therefore exceed the base plan fee significantly for high-volume users. Monitor usage carefully.

How it works in practice

Smartcat's workflow centres on its CAT (Computer-Assisted Translation) editor — a web-based translation interface that shows source and target text side by side, with AI suggestions, translation memory matches, and glossary lookups inline.

A typical workflow for an Australian business translating a product catalogue into multiple Asian languages:

  1. Upload your source document (Word, PDF, HTML, XLIFF, and many others are supported; OCR handles scanned documents).
  2. Set source and target languages. Smartcat processes the document and segments it into translation units.
  3. Choose AI translation (automated, immediate), assign to a human translator from the Marketplace, or combine both with a human post-editing AI draft.
  4. Review in the web editor, apply translation memory for repeated strings, and export the translated file.

The video translation feature is a 2025–2026 addition worth calling out: Smartcat can translate video with AI dubbing and voice cloning. For Australian businesses creating multilingual video content — training materials, product demos — this is a genuine time-saver, though AI dubbing still benefits from human review before anything client-facing is published.

The Marketplace is where Smartcat differs most clearly from pure TMS competitors. Rather than referring you to a third-party agency, you can browse, hire, and pay human translators directly within the platform. Enterprise customers can defer payment until after work is accepted.

What it does well

The AI plus human hybrid model is well-executed. Being able to run AI translation and then commission a human reviewer without leaving the platform is a meaningful workflow improvement over stitching tools together.

280+ language support is comprehensive. For Australian businesses with multilingual customer bases — Mandarin, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Hindi, Arabic — Smartcat covers the languages that matter in Australian demographics.

The free trial is generous. Fifteen days of full platform access, no credit card required, lets you run a real project before committing.

Video translation and AI dubbing is a differentiator. Few TMS platforms handle video natively. For teams creating multilingual training or marketing video, this eliminates a separate workflow.

Security infrastructure is solid. Smartcat uses Tier IV data centres run by AWS and Microsoft Azure, with 256-bit AES encryption at rest and TLS in transit. SOC 2 and SOC 3 compliance applies to the infrastructure.

Unlimited users on all plans. Unlike Lokalise, which charges per seat, Smartcat's user count is unlimited. For teams with many occasional contributors, this is a real cost advantage.

What it doesn't do well

The jump above the entry plan is steep. The next published tier, Accelerate, starts at US$24,000 a year — twenty times the entry price. A business that has outgrown the entry plan and wants Marketplace access has to make that jump.

Marketplace access is excluded from Basic. The ability to hire human translators — one of Smartcat's key selling points — is not available on the entry plan. Marketplace experts now start on the Accelerate plan (from US$24,000 a year).

Australian English (en-AU) handling is standard, not special. Like most TMS platforms, Smartcat supports en-AU as a locale setting, but does not provide Australian-specific spell-check or grammar verification on source content by default. Glossaries and style guides can be configured manually.

Data residency is offshore. Smartcat stores data on AWS and Azure infrastructure in the US, EU, and China regions. There is no Australian or APAC data residency option. For businesses handling sensitive documents — legal, financial, medical — this warrants a conversation with your privacy and legal advisers before signing up.

Support on Basic is business hours only. 24/7 support requires an Enterprise contract. For Australian businesses working across time zones, this is a limitation. You are largely reliant on the help centre and community during off-hours.

The AI Agents feature is new and evolving. Smartcat has moved quickly on AI Agents, but "new and evolving" also means the workflows and pricing around them may change. We were unable to independently verify full pricing details for agentic features as of this review date.

Australian fit

Smartcat is available to Australian businesses with no geographic restrictions. The 15-day free trial is accessible immediately.

Pricing is USD only. At the Basic level, the annual commitment is USD $1,200/year (approximately AUD $1,680 ex-GST). This is meaningfully more accessible than Lokalise's entry tier for teams willing to pay annually.

The 280+ language coverage includes all major Australian community languages. For businesses serving linguistically diverse communities — a significant segment of Australian small business — this breadth is valuable.

Data residency is offshore (US/EU/China). No Australian region option is currently available (contact Smartcat sales to confirm current infrastructure options).

There is no Australian sales or support presence listed publicly. Support is US business hours on Basic, 24/7 only on Enterprise.

Machine translation accuracy for Australian English outputs is generally good, but as with any AI translation tool, do not publish AI-translated content in regulated or client-facing contexts without human review.

Australian Fit score: 2/5 — fully accessible from Australia, competitive pricing at the Basic tier, strong language coverage for AU demographics, but USD-only billing, no AU data residency, and no APAC support tier.

Alternatives

  • DeepL — much simpler and cheaper for individual document or text translation. No TMS features, no Marketplace, but significantly faster to get started and more accessible for small teams.
  • Lokalise — see our separate review. More mature TMS features and a deeper integration ecosystem, but higher pricing at entry and no human translator marketplace.
  • Phrase (formerly Memsource) — enterprise TMS with a longer track record and APAC sales presence. Worth evaluating alongside Smartcat for larger projects (confirm current APAC presence).

Bottom line

Smartcat occupies a useful middle ground in the localisation market: more capable than a simple AI translation tool like DeepL, less complex and expensive than a full enterprise TMS at Lokalise's Advanced tier. The Basic plan at USD $1,200/year is within reach of Australian mid-sized businesses with ongoing translation needs.

The hybrid AI plus human translator model is Smartcat's genuine differentiator. If you are translating content where quality matters and you want the option to add human review without a separate procurement process, Smartcat is worth a serious look.

Three things to keep in mind before signing up: the jump from Basic to Enterprise pricing is abrupt, data sits offshore, and AI translation of any kind — Smartcat's included — needs human review before anything regulated or brand-critical goes live.

  • 30 Sep 2026 — re-verified by browser; negative confirmed, plans renamed and extended. smartcat.com/pricing on an Australian connection: Adapt from $1,200 a year (the old Basic, unlimited users), Accelerate from $24,000, Anticipate from $60,000, and Autonomous custom. This review's "no mid-tier plan" point no longer holds; the table, the plan-structure paragraph, the pricing-gap con, the marketplace con and the Value for Money note are corrected. Entry price unchanged. Bare $, no A$. aud_native: false already set. Score unchanged. Capture: Dossiers/captures/smartcat-pricing-2026-09-30.txt; Wayback 30 Sep 2026.
  • 24 Sep 2026 — The grossed-up AUD column removed from the pricing table. The table carried a second Australian column adding 10% GST to every converted figure, so each plan had two Australian prices and the higher one asserted a tax most of our readers do not pay: a GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service. The ex-GST column is unchanged and is the price. Removed, and kept visible here per our price-history rule — the column headed “AUD if GST charged (+10%)”: Basic ~$1,848/yr. reviewed: untouched per our dating rule.
