Smartcat vs Lokalise (2026): Which Localisation Platform Should an Australian Business Buy?
Our pick: Smartcat. The verdict below says who should buy the other.
Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).
Verdict (TL;DR): These tools solve different problems. Smartcat suits marketing teams wanting managed AI-plus-human translation from one account. Lokalise suits product teams shipping multilingual app and website strings. For the typical Australian buyer — a marketing-led business translating content, not code — Smartcat wins on price and human access. Its Basic plan starts at USD $1,200/year against Lokalise's USD $144/month entry. Pick Lokalise only when you are localising software UI and need Figma, GitHub, and in-context screenshots.
Smartcat: 14/25 — ⭐⭐⭐ Good. Lokalise: 15/25 — ⭐⭐⭐ Good.

The tension
Every Australian business going multilingual hits the same fork. You have outgrown pasting text into a free translation tool. You need a proper platform — one that runs AI translation, keeps a memory of what you have already translated, and lets a human fix what the machine got wrong.
Two names sit at the accessible end of that market: Smartcat and Lokalise.
From a distance they look alike. Both run AI translation with human review. Both keep translation memory. Both price in US dollars, and neither stores your data in Australia.
Up close, they part ways hard. Smartcat is a translation platform with a built-in marketplace of human linguists. You commission a person from the same account that runs the AI. It is built for marketing and content teams.
Lokalise is a translation management system built for developers. It connects to your code, your design files, and your CMS, then pushes approved strings back into the product. It is built for teams shipping software.
So the question is not "which is better." It is "which is built for the work you actually do." This piece answers that for an Australian buyer.
What each one is
Smartcat is an AI translation platform with a human-translator marketplace bolted on. Founded in 2016 and headquartered in Delaware, its pitch is the hybrid: automate the easy work with AI, then hire a human from within the platform when accuracy matters. It supports 280+ languages, per the company's own materials, and adds video translation with AI dubbing. It suits a marketing team that translates catalogues, campaigns, and documents.
Lokalise is a translation management system for product teams. Founded in 2017 in Riga, Latvia, it started as a developer tool and grew into a full localisation platform. It connects to Figma, GitHub, GitLab, Jira, Webflow, and WordPress, then runs AI translation with quality scoring on top. Its standout feature is in-context screenshots, so translators see where each string sits in the real interface. It suits an engineering or product team shipping multilingual UI.
The one-line split: Smartcat translates your content, Lokalise translates your product.
What it costs in Australia
Both price in USD only. Neither offers AUD billing. Both add GST on top for Australian customers — confirm with each vendor's accounts team whether they issue Australian tax invoices. All figures below are converted at 1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, with GST shown at ×1.10.
| Plan | Smartcat (USD) | Smartcat (AUD ex-GST) | Lokalise (USD) | Lokalise (AUD ex-GST) |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Entry | Basic, from $1,200/yr | ~$1,680/yr | Explorer, $144/mo | ~$245/mo |

Two things stand out. First, on paper Smartcat is far cheaper at entry. Its Basic plan runs about AUD $1,680/year ex-GST. Lokalise's Explorer plan runs about AUD $2,419/year ex-GST if you pay monthly across twelve months — and Explorer is the thin tier. The features that make Lokalise efficient sit on Growth, at roughly AUD $639/month inc. GST.
Second, both plans hide real cost in usage. Smartcat bills AI translation usage separately, on a pay-as-you-go or prepayment basis. Lokalise switched in April 2026 to a processed-words model with overages. On both platforms, a high-volume month can push your bill well past the headline figure. Budget for the usage, not just the plan.
One catch specific to Smartcat: the Basic plan excludes Marketplace access. The human-translator feature — the reason many teams choose Smartcat — needs an Enterprise contract to use on a pay-as-you-go basis. And there is no published mid-tier between Basic and custom Enterprise. That gap makes Smartcat harder to budget as you grow.
Feature diff
| Smartcat | Lokalise | |
|---|---|---|
| Core model | AI translation + human marketplace | Developer-first TMS |
| Best for | Marketing and content teams | Product and engineering teams |
| Human translators | Built-in marketplace, 1M+ linguists (vendor claim) | Assign your own; no marketplace |
| Developer integrations | Limited | Figma, GitHub, GitLab, Jira, Webflow, WordPress, API |
| In-context screenshots | No | Yes — key differentiator |
| Video translation / AI dubbing | Yes | No |
| Translation memory | Yes | Yes (all paid plans) |
| Users per plan | Unlimited | Per-seat pricing |
| Languages | 280+ (vendor claim) | Broad; not the headline number |
| Security | SOC 2 / SOC 3, AES-256, TLS | SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001 |
The lines are clean. Smartcat wins on human access, video, unlimited users, and entry price. Lokalise wins on developer workflow, in-context editing, and integration depth.
If your localisation work starts in a Word document or a CMS, Smartcat fits the shape of your day. If it starts in a GitHub repo or a Figma file, Lokalise fits.
One point in Lokalise's favour on our scorecard: it scored 4/5 on Reliability & Support against Smartcat's 2/5. Lokalise carries SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001 with strong uptime. Smartcat's infrastructure is solid, but support is business-hours-only unless you reach Enterprise, and its AI pricing is still evolving. That reliability gap is why Lokalise edges ahead overall despite the steeper price.
Australian fit
Here is the uncomfortable truth: neither tool is built with Australia in mind. Both scored 2/5 on Australian Fit in our full reviews. That matters, because Australian Fit is this publication's defining criterion, and neither clears the bar for a top rating (see Methodology).
Pricing. Both are USD-only. You wear the exchange rate and any card-conversion fees. GST is added on top for Australian customers on both. Ask each vendor for a compliant Australian tax invoice before you commit — do not assume one arrives automatically.
Data residency. This is the sharper concern. Smartcat stores data on AWS and Azure across US, EU, and China regions. Lokalise stores data on AWS in EU regions. Neither offers an Australian or APAC data residency option. For marketing copy, that is usually fine. For legal, financial, medical, or otherwise sensitive documents, talk to your privacy adviser before uploading anything. Note the China-region hosting on Smartcat's side if data sovereignty is a live concern for your board.
Australian English. Both treat English as a single source language. Neither enforces en-AU spelling on your source content by default. You can set en-AU as a target locale and configure "organise," "colour," and "realise" through glossaries and style guides — but it is manual on both. For an Australian business, that is a setup step that should not be necessary.
Support timezone. Neither has an Australian support presence. Smartcat is US business hours on Basic, 24/7 only on Enterprise. Lokalise is standard business hours on lower tiers, with 24/7 reserved for Enterprise. If you need help at 3pm AEST, expect to lean on documentation.
On Australian fit, it is a draw — and not a flattering one. Choose on price and workflow, then manage the residency and GST gaps deliberately.
Who should buy which
Buy Smartcat if you are a marketing or content team. You translate campaigns, catalogues, product descriptions, and the occasional video. You want AI speed with the option to hire a human reviewer without a separate procurement process. The Basic plan gets you started for about AUD $1,680/year ex-GST, and unlimited users suits teams with many occasional contributors. Just remember: Marketplace access — the human side — needs Enterprise, so price that in before you rely on it.
Buy Lokalise if you are a product or engineering team. You are shipping multilingual app or website UI. You need Figma and GitHub integrations, in-context screenshots so translations fit your buttons, and workflow automation that runs without babysitting. You have the budget for Growth at roughly AUD $639/month inc. GST, and the developer workflow justifies it. For continuous localisation of software strings, nothing here beats it.
Buy neither if you translate a handful of documents. Both are overkill for occasional, low-volume translation. Start with a simpler AI tool like DeepL and graduate to a platform when your volume justifies it.
The verdict
For the typical Australian buyer this publication writes for — a marketing-led small or mid-sized business translating content, not code — Smartcat is the pick. It costs less to start, does not charge per seat, and gives you access to human linguists inside the same tool. Its shape matches how a marketing team actually works.
But this is a genuine "depends on the buyer" call, and the scores reflect it. Lokalise edges ahead overall at 15/25 to Smartcat's 14/25, earned on reliability and developer workflow. If you are shipping software UI in multiple languages, Lokalise is the better tool and the higher price is justified.
Both hold your data offshore, both bill in USD, and both need human review before anything client-facing or regulated goes live. Neither is built for Australia. Choose the one built for your work, then close the residency and GST gaps yourself.
