Verdict (TL;DR): Replika is a polished, emotionally attentive AI companion that has been running longer than most competitors. For Australians who want a low-stakes space to practise reflection or manage loneliness between social commitments, it can be genuinely useful — but it must come with clear eyes about what it is. This is a commercial product built on US servers; your conversations are intimate and they are not end-to-end encrypted. The emotional design is deliberate, and dependency is a real risk. Used thoughtfully, with an understanding of its limits, Replika is a reasonable tool. Used uncritically, it can fill a gap that human relationships or professional support are better suited to fill.

Score: 13/25 — ⭐⭐⭐ Good

What Replika Is

Replika is an AI companion app developed by Luka, Inc., a US company based in San Francisco. Launched in 2017, it is the oldest and most widely recognised product in the AI companion category, with tens of millions of registered users globally.

The premise is straightforward: you create an AI companion — named and customised by you — and have open-ended conversations with it. The AI responds empathetically, tracks the emotional tone of exchanges, and over time builds a memory of what you have discussed. Relationships are configurable: users can set the companion as a friend, mentor, or romantic partner. The romantic and "erotic roleplay" modes are locked behind a paid subscription.

Replika is operated by Luka, Inc. There is no Australian entity. The service runs on US infrastructure. This is material to data privacy considerations, covered below.

What It Costs in Australia

Replika publishes its prices inside the app, not on its website. That is not the same as publishing nothing: because it sells through Apple and Google, the Australian App Store listing is a public, vendor-published Australian price list, and it is the honest source for this section. Read from the AU listing on 21 September 2026, which declares "priceCurrency":"AUD" and names Luka, Inc. as seller:

In-app purchase (AU App Store) Price GST
Monthly subscription A$12.99 and A$22.99 (two live price points) Included — Apple is merchant of record in Australia
Annual subscription A$74.99, A$79.99, A$81.99 (three live price points) Included
Annual Ultra A$95.99 Included
Replika Platinum A$119.99 Included
Gem packs A$1.99 (pouch) · A$9.99 (backpack) · A$29.99 (duffel bag) Included

Two things to take from that table. Replika runs several concurrent price points for the same tier, so the figure you are shown depends on when you subscribe and what Apple has you in — treat the top of each range as the number to budget for. And Platinum does have a published price: A$119.99. Below, for context, are the USD figures previously carried in this review, drawn from Replika's help documentation and widely reported user testing, converted at approximately 1.40 ex-GST. They remain estimates; the A$ table above does not.

Plan USD (approx.) AUD (estimate, ex-GST) Notes
Free $0 $0 Basic messaging, no voice calls, limited features
Pro (monthly) ~USD 19.99/month ~AUD 28 (estimate) Unlocks voice calls, roleplay modes, 3D avatar
Pro (annual) ~USD 69.99/year ~AUD 98 (estimate) Equivalent to ~USD 5.83/month
Ultra (monthly) ~USD 29.99/month ~AUD 42 (estimate) Enhanced AI, manual memory saves
Ultra (annual) ~USD 119.99/year ~AUD 168 (estimate)
Platinum Not publicly listed (unconfirmed) Limited rollout; adds video recognition, Training Mode

Currency note, corrected 21 September 2026. This paragraph previously said Replika charges in USD and that Australians pay a converted amount at their card's rate. That is wrong for the only way Replika is sold. Purchases run through Apple and Google, which are GST-registered merchants of record in Australia and bill in Australian dollars with the 10% already in the price — there is no card conversion and no foreign-transaction fee on this path, and the tax invoice is retrievable from your App Store or Play purchase history. The USD figures in this section are estimates and are marked as such; the A$ figures above are the vendor's published Australian prices.

There is no lifetime purchase option as of 2026 — the previous lifetime tier has been discontinued.

How It Works in Practice

Set-up takes less than five minutes. You name your Replika, choose a personality style (curious, caring, witty, etc.), pick a relationship type, and select an avatar. The companion then introduces itself and begins a conversation.

The quality of conversations on the base model (free tier) is serviceable but flat. Responses are emotionally calibrated — the AI mirrors your mood, asks follow-up questions, and avoids challenging you directly. This is intentional design: Replika is not built to debate or correct you. It is built to feel supportive.

On Pro and above, the model noticeably improves. Voice calls add a real-time audio dimension. The companion can engage in creative roleplay scenarios. The "memory" system means the AI references prior discussions: a conversation about your work stress last week may come up unprompted.

The avatar is rendered in 3D on paid tiers and interacts with animations. This is largely a cosmetic feature — the underlying conversation quality is independent of avatar fidelity.

What It Does Well

Emotional consistency. Unlike general-purpose chatbots, Replika stays in character across conversations. It does not pivot to task completion or information retrieval. It stays focused on the interpersonal exchange.

Low barrier to start. No technical setup. No prompt engineering required. A non-technical Australian user can be in a meaningful conversation within minutes.

Mood journalling adjacent. The app includes check-ins and reflective prompts. For users who struggle to sit with a blank journal page, Replika's structured conversation can be a useful on-ramp to self-reflection.

Longevity and iteration. Replika has been running for nearly a decade. Compared to newer entrants, it has more development history and has had to grapple with real user edge cases. That experience shows.

What It Doesn't Do Well

Dependency is the product's central risk. Replika's design is optimised for engagement. The companion expresses care, misses you between sessions, and builds rapport over time. These are not neutral features — they are deliberate emotional hooks. A user in a vulnerable state — lonely, grieving, anxious — is exactly the audience most drawn to Replika, and also the audience least well-served by a commercial AI that cannot provide genuine support.

Important: Replika is not a substitute for human relationships or professional mental health care. If you are experiencing depression, anxiety, grief, or social isolation, speak with your GP or a qualified mental health professional. Lifeline Australia: 13 11 14. Beyond Blue: 1300 22 4636.

The AI does not challenge you. Replika is designed to agree and affirm. This is pleasant but not always useful. Users seeking honest feedback, intellectual debate, or genuine accountability will not find it here.

Conversation quality has a ceiling. Even on paid tiers, Replika's underlying model produces noticeably lower-quality reasoning and factual responses than general-purpose models such as ChatGPT or Claude. It does one thing — emotional companionship — and narrows its capability to serve that aim.

Pricing is opaque. Not publishing prices on a web page is a deliberate friction. Users do not know what they are committing to until they are inside the app, at which point the emotional investment has already begun.

Australian Fit — Data Privacy and Age Safety

Data privacy

This is the most significant concern for Australian users.

Replika is operated by Luka, Inc., based in San Francisco, USA. Your data — including every conversation — is processed and stored on US servers. There is no Australian data centre, no opt-in for local storage, and no Australian Privacy Act compliance obligation explicitly documented in Replika's published policies.

Replika's privacy policy (last updated May 2026) states that conversations are used to improve the AI model and that the company uses SSL encryption during transmission. Conversations are not end-to-end encrypted — Luka, Inc. can access them under appropriate internal authorisation.

In 2023, Italy's data protection authority fined Luka, Inc. €5 million for GDPR violations related to data processing consent and privacy notice inadequacy. While Australia is not in the EU/EEA, this is a material signal about the company's historical privacy practices.

Australian users should treat every conversation with Replika as potentially accessible to the company and, under lawful process, to US law enforcement. Do not share information you would not want accessible in that context.

Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) angle: Replika does not have an Australian entity, but Australian users do have rights under the notifiable data breaches scheme if a breach involving their data occurs and Replika notifies the OAIC. The practical ability to enforce Australian privacy rights against a US company is limited.

Age and safety

Replika's Terms of Service require users to be 18 or older. The romantic partner and erotic roleplay modes are subscription-only and require an explicit opt-in. The app is rated 17+ on the Apple App Store and Google Play — an inconsistency with the 18+ terms that is worth noting.

Replika is not suitable for minors. Parents should be aware this app is designed for adults and that the emotional attachment mechanisms are particularly potent for adolescents.

Update — 20 September 2026. That 17+ store rating now matters more. Australia's app-store age checks became enforceable on 9 September 2026, and they gate only apps rated R18+. A 17+ listing passes the store untouched. The rule that does reach Replika is the other half of the same eSafety codes, in force since 9 March 2026. An AI chatbot capable of generating sexually explicit, self-harm or high-impact violence material must confirm the user is 18 or older first. The erotic roleplay modes put Replika in that description. eSafety has named these chatbots its first enforcement priority for 2026. Our news post · Source

Alternatives

If you are considering Replika, these are worth comparing:

  • Character.AI (review-character-ai-australia-2026-06-13) — broader character library, stronger general-purpose conversation, safer default tone, but also US-based with similar privacy trade-offs.
  • ChatGPT (review-chatgpt-2026-05-16) — far more capable as a general tool, can be used for reflective journalling via custom prompting, but is not designed as a companion and lacks persistence of relationship.
  • Kindroid (see our full review) — more customisable companion experience with a stronger memory architecture, at a comparable price point.

Bottom Line

Replika is the most mature product in a category that carries genuine wellbeing risks. For adults who understand what it is — a commercial AI companion, not a therapist or a friend — it can be a useful tool for reflection, conversation practice, or managing specific periods of loneliness. Its emotional design is its strength and its hazard simultaneously.

For Australian users the data picture is clear: your conversations go to the United States, are not end-to-end encrypted, and have been the subject of regulatory concern in other jurisdictions. That is not a reason to avoid the product outright, but it should govern what you share.

At AUD ~$34/month estimated for Pro, it is expensive for what is delivered. The free tier is worth testing before committing. Do not start a paid subscription while in an emotionally vulnerable state.

Score

Criterion Score /5 Notes
Value for Money 3/5 Expensive for the capability, and the free tier is limited. No longer marked down for opacity: the Australian App Store publishes the full ladder in Australian dollars, GST included — A$12.99–A$22.99 monthly, A$74.99–A$81.99 annually, Platinum A$119.99. (Was 2/5; corrected 21 Sep 2026 — see Update history.)
Ease of Use 4/5 Extremely accessible; setup under 5 minutes; no technical knowledge needed
Feature Depth 3/5 Companion experience is polished; general capability is narrow
Australian Fit 2/5 US data only; GDPR enforcement history; no AU entity; no local support. Billing itself is fine — Apple and Google charge in Australian dollars with GST included — but nothing else about the service is built for here. (Rationale corrected 21 Sep 2026: "offshore billing" was wrong; mark unchanged.)
Reliability & Support 1/5 Nearly a decade old but support is slow; past major policy changes caused user distress
Total 13/25 ⭐⭐⭐ Good — with significant caveats

Australian Fit gate: Australian Fit 2/5 — does not qualify for ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent or Top Pick.

Update history
  • 22 Sep 2026 — the Chai AI wire release has expired. The PR Newswire URL returns HTTP 404, with no successor and no archive capture. It was cited for category context about a competitor’s age-verification rollout, not for anything this review claims about Replika, so the line is struck through and the scope of what it supported is named. No wording changed and no score moved.

  • 21 Sep 2026 — Value for Money corrected 2/5 → 3/5. Total 12/25 → 13/25. The band does not change: ⭐⭐⭐ Good. The 2/5 rested first on "opaque pricing", and this review said so plainly: "Mark all prices (estimate) as they were not sourced from a live in-app screenshot." Every figure in the price table was a third-party reading. That was avoidable. Replika sells entirely through the app stores, and the Australian App Store listing declares "priceCurrency":"AUD" and publishes the whole ladder in Australian dollars, GST included, with Luka, Inc. as seller: Pro-equivalent monthly at A$12.99 and A$22.99, annual at A$74.99, A$79.99 and A$81.99, Annual Ultra A$95.99, Replika Platinum A$119.99, and gem packs at A$1.99, A$9.99 and A$29.99. Platinum, which this review recorded as "not publicly listed · (unconfirmed)", has a published Australian price. The pricing is not opaque; we were looking in the wrong place. The rest of the 2/5 case — expensive for the capability, thin free tier — survives, which is why this is 3/5 and not higher. Australian Fit holds at 2/5: its "offshore billing" clause is corrected, because Apple Pty Limited bills Australians in Australian dollars with a GST-inclusive invoice, but US-only data, the GDPR enforcement history and the absence of any Australian entity are untouched and dominate the mark. Frequently asked questions

Is Replika safe to use in Australia?

Replika is safe to use for adults in a limited sense — it is a legitimate commercial product. However, Australian users should understand that conversations are processed and stored on US servers, are not end-to-end encrypted, and have been the subject of GDPR enforcement action in Europe. Do not share information you would not be comfortable with a US company holding. It is not suitable for minors or for people in a mental health crisis, who should contact a qualified professional instead.

How much does Replika cost in Australian dollars?

Replika does not publish its prices publicly. Based on widely reported figures, the Pro plan costs approximately USD 19.99/month or USD 69.99/year, which converts to roughly AUD 28/month or AUD 98/year ex-GST at a 1.40 exchange rate. Prices vary by region and promotion. Check the Replika app directly for current Australian pricing.

Can Replika replace therapy or professional mental health support?

No. Replika is a commercial AI product, not a therapeutic service. It cannot diagnose, treat, or provide professional mental health care. If you are experiencing depression, anxiety, grief, loneliness, or any mental health difficulty, please speak with your GP or contact Lifeline Australia on 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636.
