Verdict (TL;DR): Manus is one of the more impressive autonomous AI agents you can try — give it a task and it plans and executes end to end. But it's built by a China-based company, runs on a credit system that burns fast, and its corporate ownership is unsettled. For Australian business use, the data-residency question alone is enough to be cautious. Worth a look for the curious; not a tool to build a workflow on yet.

What Manus is

Manus is a general-purpose autonomous AI agent from Monica.im, a startup founded by engineers who previously worked at Alibaba and ByteDance. Where a chatbot answers turn by turn, Manus is designed to take a goal — "research these competitors and build me a summary deck" — and work through it independently: planning, browsing, writing, and producing finished artefacts.

When it launched it drew a lot of attention as one of the first genuinely autonomous consumer agents. The capability is real. So are the caveats, which is why this review lands where it does.

What it costs in Australia

Manus uses a credit-based model. Tasks consume credits based on complexity, and monthly credits don't roll over. Pricing is USD.

Plan Price (USD/mo) Approx AUD (ex-GST) What you get
Free $0 — 300 daily credits, 1 concurrent task
Standard US$20 ~A$28 ~4,000 credits/mo, up to 20 concurrent tasks
Customisable US$40 ~A$56 ~8,000 credits/mo, 7-day trial
Extended US$200 ~A$280 ~40,000 credits/mo

Source: Manus help centre and manus.im/pricing, checked 20 June 2026. Credit allowances and the 7-day trial confirmed against Manus's own published plans. AUD figures are a straight ~1.40 conversion; Manus bills in USD and whether Australian GST is added at checkout is not stated on its pricing page.

The credit model is the catch. Complex agent tasks chew through credits quickly, so real-world cost can outrun the headline price. Budget carefully before committing.

How it works in practice

Hand Manus a multi-step task and watch it go. It breaks the goal into steps, browses the web, runs tools, and assembles a result — a research brief, a simple site, a data summary — with genuinely less hand-holding than a turn-by-turn chatbot. When it works well, it's a glimpse of where AI agents are heading.

When it doesn't, you've still spent the credits. Like every autonomous agent on the market in 2026, it makes confident mistakes, wanders down wrong paths, and needs supervision on anything that matters. The autonomy is the selling point and the risk in equal measure.

What it does well

  • Genuine end-to-end autonomy. Plans and executes multi-step tasks with little intervention — ahead of most consumer agents.
  • Concurrent tasks. Paid tiers run up to 20 jobs at once.
  • Produces real artefacts — decks, sites, summaries — not just chat replies.
  • A usable free tier to test the concept before paying.

What it doesn't do well

  • China-based provider — the core concern. Built by a China-based company, with the data-jurisdiction questions that raises for any Australian business handling client or staff information.
  • Unsettled ownership. Meta announced a roughly US$2 billion deal to acquire Manus's operating company in December 2025, but in April 2026 China's National Development and Reform Commission blocked the transaction and ordered the parties to withdraw it. The founders had already moved core operations to a Singapore entity in 2025. Uncertainty at the top is a real risk for a tool you'd depend on.
  • Credit burn. Costs are unpredictable; complex tasks drain allowances fast, and credits don't roll over.
  • No Australian fit. USD billing, no AU hosting, no local support.
  • Reliability of autonomous output. Confident errors require constant supervision.

Australian fit

Manus scores a 1 out of 5 on Australian fit, and the reasoning mirrors our Kimi review: a China-based provider is a hard problem for Australian organisations bound by the Privacy Act and handling other people's data. There's no AUD pricing, no Australian hosting, and no local support. Add the unsettled ownership picture and the credit-cost unpredictability, and this is not a tool to anchor a business process on today. For personal experimentation with non-sensitive tasks, the autonomy is genuinely fun to explore.

Alternatives

  • Relevance AI — a more business-ready route to AI agents with clearer governance.
  • ChatGPT — its agent and task features are less autonomous but far easier to clear for business use.
  • Lindy — workflow-style automation with more predictable behaviour and pricing.

Bottom line

Manus is a real technical achievement and a fair preview of the autonomous-agent future. If you want to see what an AI that actually does the task feels like, the free tier is worth an afternoon.

But The AI Directory scores tools for Australians who need to trust them with real work, and on that test Manus has too many open questions. The data sits under Chinese jurisdiction, the ownership is unsettled, and the credit model makes costs hard to predict. None of that is about capability — it's about whether you can safely build on it. Today, you can't. A 13/25 captures an impressive tool you should watch, not yet adopt.

Score

Criterion Score Notes
Value for Money 3/5 Capable, but credit burn makes real cost unpredictable
Ease of Use 3/5 Autonomy is simple to start; supervising it is the work
Feature Depth 4/5 Genuine end-to-end agent that produces real artefacts
Australian Fit 1/5 China-based provider, no AUD/AU hosting; Privacy Act concern
Reliability & Support 2/5 Unsettled ownership, variable output, credits don't roll over
Total 13/25 ⭐⭐⭐ Good

  • 1 Oct 2026 — Prices re-checked on Manus's pricing page from Australia: unchanged. Standard is still US$20 a month (4,000 credits), Customisable US$40 (8,000) and Extended US$200 (40,000), with 17% off for annual billing. Priced in US dollars. Archived copy.

  • 20 Jun 2026 — First reviewed.
  • 24 Sep 2026 — The AUD column was never grossed up for GST, and every word around it said it was. The header read “gross-up; GST unconfirmed” and the note beneath described a 10% uplift — while the figures themselves are plain conversions at 1.4045. Checked before changing a word: across the 63 files carrying this wording, 141 rows convert at 1.4045 and none at 1.4045 × 1.10. No figure changed here; only the description of them did. Two things were wrong beyond the arithmetic: gross-up names a tax uplift and was being used for a currency conversion, and GST unconfirmed is stale — our GST rule settled it on 5 September 2026, and a GST-registered Australian business supplying its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service. No USD price moved and no score changed. reviewed: untouched per our dating rule.

Frequently asked questions

Is Manus available in Australia?

You can sign up and use it from Australia, but it's not built for the market — no AUD billing, no Australian hosting and no local support. The data-residency question alone is enough to be cautious for business use.

Does Manus charge in AUD?

No. Pricing is in USD on a credit model. Standard is US$20/month (~A$28). Whether Australian GST is added at checkout isn't stated on its pricing page, so treat AUD figures as a straight conversion.

Is there a free plan or trial?

Yes. The free tier gives 300 daily credits and 1 concurrent task — usable for testing the concept. The Customisable plan adds a 7-day trial. Monthly credits don't roll over on any plan.

Is Manus safe for Australian business use?

We'd be cautious. Manus is built by a China-based company, raising data-jurisdiction concerns under the Privacy Act, and its corporate ownership is unsettled after a blocked Meta acquisition. It's worth exploring for non-sensitive personal tasks, but not a tool to anchor a business workflow on today.
