Verdict (TL;DR): Mem is a notes app that throws out folders entirely and lets AI surface the right note when you need it. The "Heads Up" feature, which links related notes as you type, is genuinely useful and hard to find elsewhere. But it bills only in US dollars, gives no Australian data-residency option, and asks $12/month for what many Australians already get bundled inside Notion or ChatGPT. Worth a free-tier trial if you drown in notes and hate filing them. Not a confident buy for most.

What Mem is
Mem is an AI-powered notes app that bills itself as "your AI thought partner." The pitch is simple: stop filing notes into folders. Just dump everything in — meeting notes, voice memos, web clippings, random ideas — and let the AI organise and retrieve it for you.
You capture notes by typing, talking, clipping from a Chrome extension, or forwarding an email. Mem then connects related notes automatically and lets you chat with your knowledge base to pull answers back out. It's pitched at people who take a lot of notes and never go back to read them because they can never find anything.
The standout feature is "Heads Up" — as you write, Mem surfaces older notes it thinks are relevant, so a past meeting note or idea resurfaces at the moment it matters. That's the part that separates Mem from a plain notes app with a chatbot bolted on.
What it costs in Australia
There is no AUD billing. Mem prices in US dollars only, so the figure on your card depends on the exchange rate and your bank's foreign-transaction fee. Conversions below use the AID standard rate (US$1 ≈ A$1.40) and show figures ex-GST (GST-registered businesses quoting an ABN are not charged GST; other buyers add ~10%).
| Plan | Price (USD) | Approx AUD (ex-GST) | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | US$0 | A$0 | 25 messages to Mem, 25 new notes a month, task tracking on up to 25 notes, 3 hours of Voice Mode |
| Plus | US$9/mo | ~A$13/mo | 50 messages, 50 notes, 25 open tasks and projects, 10 hours of Voice Mode |
| Pro | US$29/mo | ~A$41/mo | 100 messages, 100 notes, 50 open tasks, one custom routine, one connection (Gmail, Slack, Todoist), 25 hours of Voice Mode |
| Pro 2× / 5× / 10× / 20× | US$49 / US$99 / US$149 / US$199 a month | ~A$69 / ~A$139 / ~A$209 / ~A$279 | Two to twenty times the Pro allowances |
Source: get.mem.ai/pricing, checked 20 June 2026 and re-read 30 September 2026 (table above is the September ladder; the June Pro plan was US$12 a month with unlimited notes, and a Teams plan was listed). The pricing page also displayed a "$14.99" figure near the top whose plan mapping wasn't clearly labelled — the Pro plan is explicitly stated as $12/month. The live pricing page showed no annual-billing option or annual discount at the time of review, so the figures above are monthly. If you need annual billing, confirm the terms with Mem directly.
A note on GST: as a US-billed digital service, Mem should be charging GST to Australian consumers under the ATO's rules for imported digital products. The pricing page does not state how GST is handled, and the column above is a plain conversion with no loading applied. Check your own invoice for the actual treatment.
How it works in practice
Setup takes about five minutes. You create an account, install the Chrome clipper if you want it, and start dumping notes. There's no folder structure to design first — that's the whole point.
The free tier is genuinely tight. Twenty-five notes a month and 25 chat messages a month is enough to test the feel, not enough to live in. A heavy note-taker will hit that wall inside a week, which is clearly the intent — the free plan is a trial, not a home.
On Pro, the AI features open up. You can chat with your notes ("what did we decide about the Q3 budget?"), run deep searches, and pick which underlying AI model answers your queries. The "Heads Up" suggestions are the daily payoff: write up a client call and Mem quietly surfaces the last three notes about that client. When it works, it feels like the app read your mind. When it misfires, it surfaces noise — and there's no way to tell in advance which you'll get on a given day.
What it does well
- "Heads Up" is a real feature, not a gimmick. Surfacing related notes as you write is the one thing Mem does that a Notion-plus-chatbot setup doesn't replicate cleanly. If resurfacing old context is your pain point, this is the reason to look.
- Zero-filing capture. You can throw a thought in by voice, clip, email, or text and never think about where it "goes." For people who abandon note apps because filing is friction, that lowers the barrier.
- You choose the AI model. Pro lets you select which model answers your queries, rather than locking you to one vendor's engine. Mem doesn't publish the exact list of available models on its pricing page, so check inside the app for the current line-up.
- Clean, fast capture surface. The interface is quick and uncluttered — it reads like a notes app, not a project-management suite, which suits someone who just wants to write and move on.
What it doesn't do well
- No AUD billing and no stated Australian data residency. You pay in US dollars, wear the FX spread plus any foreign-transaction fee, and there's no published option to host your data in Australia. For anyone handling client or commercially sensitive notes, that's a real gap. Mem's Trust Center (trust.mem.ai) did not expose hosting region, SOC 2, or GDPR detail in a readable form at review time, so treat the compliance posture as unconfirmed and check it directly before trusting Mem with sensitive material.
- The free tier is barely usable. 25 notes a month is a demo, not a free plan. You can't properly evaluate whether the AI earns its keep before you're asked to pay.
- You may already own this. A Notion AI or ChatGPT Plus subscriber gets overlapping capability — note storage plus an AI you can query — often inside a tool they're already paying for. Mem has to be meaningfully better at resurfacing notes to justify a second subscription, and for many users it won't be.
- "It organises itself" cuts both ways. When you give up folders, you also give up control. If the AI's connections are wrong or its retrieval misses, you have fewer manual levers to fix it than a structured app gives you.
- Thin AU support footprint. No Australian phone support, no local hours, and a US-time-zone team. Fine for a notes app; worth knowing before you trust it with anything important.
Australian fit
This is where Mem struggles for our readers. It's a capable global product with no Australian adaptation at all. Billing is USD-only, so the Pro plan's US$29 becomes roughly A$41 (Plus: US$9, about A$13) once you add the exchange rate and a likely GST loading — and your actual cost moves with the dollar. There's no published Australian data-residency option, which matters if you're a Melbourne business owner putting client notes into it. The product makes no concession to AU context — no local pricing, no local support hours, no stated hosting region.
None of that makes Mem unusable in Australia. It makes it a tool you use despite being Australian, not one built with you in mind. For a personal idea-capture habit, that's tolerable. For business-sensitive material, the unconfirmed data residency is enough reason to pause until you've read the Trust Center yourself.
Alternatives
- Notion AI — if you want notes, databases, and an AI you can query in one place, and you're happy to do some manual structure. Many Australians already pay for it, which makes a second Mem subscription hard to justify.
- ChatGPT — not a notes app, but if "chat with my information" is the job you're hiring for, ChatGPT Plus with its memory and file uploads covers a lot of the same ground for similar money.
- Claude — strong for long-form thinking and working over your own documents; pair it with any plain notes app and you get much of Mem's retrieval value without the lock-in to one app's organisational model.
Bottom line
Mem is a clever, well-built notes app with one genuinely distinctive feature — "Heads Up" — and a clear point of view: stop filing, let AI find it. If you take far more notes than you ever revisit, and resurfacing old context is your daily frustration, the free tier is worth an afternoon.
But it's a hard recommend for most Australians. You'll likely already own an overlapping tool, you'll pay in US dollars, and you can't confirm where your data lives. For a 35-year-old Melbourne business owner weighing a second subscription, the honest answer is: try the free tier, but don't expect Mem to replace what you've already got unless "Heads Up" specifically solves a problem you feel every day.

- 24 Sep 2026 — The AUD column was never grossed up for GST, and every word around it said it was. The header read “gross-up; GST unconfirmed” and the note beneath described a 10% uplift — while the figures themselves are plain conversions at 1.4045. Checked before changing a word: across the 63 files carrying this wording, 141 rows convert at 1.4045 and none at 1.4045 × 1.10. No figure changed here; only the description of them did. Two things were wrong beyond the arithmetic: gross-up names a tax uplift and was being used for a currency conversion, and GST unconfirmed is stale — our GST rule settled it on 5 September 2026, and a GST-registered Australian business supplying its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service. No USD price moved and no score changed.

Frequently asked questions
Is Mem available in Australia?
Yes — it's a global web and app product accessible from Australia, but with no Australian adaptation: no local pricing, no local support hours and no stated hosting region. You use it despite being Australian, not because it's built for you.
Does Mem charge in AUD?
No. Mem prices in US dollars only, so your card cost depends on the exchange rate plus any foreign-transaction fee. Plus is US$9 a month (~A$13) and Pro US$29 (~A$41), checked 30 September 2026. GST handling isn't stated on the pricing page — check your own invoice.
Is there a free plan?
Yes, but it's tight — 25 notes and 25 messages to Mem a month, plus 3 hours of Voice Mode. That's enough to test the feel, not enough to live in. A heavy note-taker will hit the wall within a week.
Does Mem keep my data in Australia?
No published Australian data-residency option. Its Trust Center didn't expose hosting region, SOC 2 or GDPR detail readably at review time, so treat the compliance posture as unconfirmed and check it before trusting Mem with sensitive material.
Who is Mem best for?
People who take far more notes than they revisit and find filing a chore — the "Heads Up" related-note surfacing is genuinely distinctive. For most others, an existing Notion AI or ChatGPT subscription already overlaps it, so a second subscription is hard to justify.
