Pricing figures updated 20 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD = 1.4045 AUD, Frankfurter/ECB reference rate, 18 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).

Notion AI is the most useful AI built into a productivity tool right now for Australian small teams already living inside Notion. It's no longer the cheap USD$10 add-on it launched as — since May 2025 it's bundled into Notion's Business plan at USD$20/seat/month (around AUD$28 ex-GST). If Notion is already where your team works, the upgrade earns its keep. If it isn't, buy ChatGPT or Claude instead.

What is Notion AI?

Notion AI is the AI layer baked into Notion — the workspace tool used for docs, wikis, project tracking, and databases. It started life in late 2022 as a standalone USD$10/seat add-on and has been rebuilt twice since: bundled into the Business plan in May 2025 ("Notion AI for Work"), then rebuilt again as an agentic platform with the launch of Notion 3.0 / Notion Agent at Make with Notion in September 2025. Today it covers AI chat, Notion Agent (multi-step task completion), Custom Agents (scheduled and triggered automations, credit-metered from 4 May 2026), AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search across your connected apps, Research Mode for deeper reasoning, AI Connectors to Slack / Google Drive / GitHub / Salesforce / Box and more, plus a developer platform — Workers, External Agents API, Database Sync — that landed in Notion 3.5 on 13 May 2026. The vendor is Notion Labs, headquartered in San Francisco, with no Australian office.

What we like

It actually uses your workspace. The AI chat answers questions against your own Notion pages and your connected apps — not a generic web search. For teams that have built a real Notion wiki, this is the moment workspace AI stops feeling like a gimmick.

AI Meeting Notes is the surprise win. Auto-transcription, summarisation, and (since Notion 3.4 on 14 April 2026) custom-instruction summaries that let you set the meeting style — sales call, standup, client workshop — and get a usable summary back. Included on Business and Enterprise; free plans get a limited trial.

Enterprise Search is the second one. It searches across Notion plus connected apps — Slack, Google Drive, Microsoft Teams, GitHub, with Jira, Box, OneDrive, Salesforce and Asana in beta. For a small team drowning in tabs, this is closer to what people imagined "workspace AI" would feel like than anything from the standalone chatbots.

Custom Agents move from a toy to something useful. Generally available since 24 February 2026 (Notion 3.3), Custom Agents run multi-step workflows on schedules or triggers — clear out an inbox, draft a weekly status, update a CRM record. As of 14 April 2026, the model lineup includes GPT-5.4 Mini/Nano, Claude Haiku 4.5, and MiniMax M2.5, with Notion claiming 35–50% lower cost per agent run.

Free for verified students and educators. The Plus plan is free on a 1-member workspace — useful for Australian students and solo educators who want to actually use Notion AI rather than the limited trial on Free.

Watch out for

Pricing is no longer the small add-on it was. Notion AI used to be a USD$10/seat add-on you could bolt onto any plan. Since 13 May 2025 it's been bundled into the Business plan at USD$20/seat/month (existing customers transitioned at first renewal after 13 August 2025). For a five-person Melbourne team, that's roughly AUD$170/month, USD-billed. The Free and Plus plans still get a "Trial of Notion AI" — generate docs, autofill databases, limited usage — but not the Agent, Meeting Notes, or Enterprise Search.

No Australian data residency, and none on the roadmap. Workspace data sits on AWS in US-West-2 (Oregon) by default. EU (Frankfurt), Tokyo (with Osaka backup) and Seoul are now live for Enterprise customers — Tokyo and Seoul shipped after their 23 March 2026 announcement. Sydney is not listed, and not on Notion's public roadmap as of 28 June 2026. Source For Australian buyers with sovereignty preferences, that's a real limitation.

No IRAP certification. Notion holds SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001/27701/27017/27018, HIPAA (Enterprise with BAA), GDPR, and BSI C5. There's no IRAP listing. For government and regulated-industry buyers, that disqualifies it as is.

Custom Agents now metered against credits. From 4 May 2026, Custom Agents began metering at USD$10 per 1,000 Notion credits (about AUD$14.00 per 1,000). Workers — the new custom-code feature in Notion 3.5 — remains free during beta and starts metering against the same credit pool from 15 October 2026 (Notion pushed this back from the original 11 August date; roughly USD$0.0023 per run once live — Source). Plan your agent and worker usage; running a busy Custom Agent on every page change can build a bill that wasn't there last quarter.

Image generation is gated and rate-limited. AI image generation and editing is Business + Enterprise only, capped at 10 generations or edits per 24 hours and 30 per 30 days. If image work matters, this is not the tool for it — buy Midjourney or use ChatGPT's image features.

Pricing

Plan USD/seat/mo AUD est. ex-GST (FX 1.4045) What's included (AI-relevant)
Free $0 $0 "Trial of Notion AI" only — generate docs, autofill databases, limited usage
Plus (monthly) $10 ~AUD$14.00 Trial of Notion AI only — no Notion Agent, no AI Meeting Notes (other than limited trial), no Enterprise Search
Plus (annual, calculated) ~$8 ~AUD$11.24 As above. Note: Notion's pricing page advertises "Save up to 20% with yearly" but does not display an explicit annual per-seat figure. The ~$8 number is calculated from that claim, not displayed by the vendor.
Business (monthly) $20 ~AUD$28.00 Full Notion AI: Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search (Beta), Research Mode, Custom Agents (credit-metered), AI Connectors (all third-party), Notion Mail AI, SAML SSO
Business (annual, calculated) ~$16 ~AUD$22.47 As above. Same "Save up to 20%" caveat — annual per-seat dollar figure is not displayed on the pricing page.
Enterprise Custom Custom Everything in Business + zero data retention with LLM providers, SCIM, audit log, EU + Tokyo + Seoul data residency, HIPAA via BAA, Customer Success Manager
Custom Agents add-on USD$10 per 1,000 credits ~AUD$14.00 per 1,000 On Business / Enterprise. Free trial period ended 3 May 2026; metered from 4 May 2026.
Workers add-on Same Notion credit pool Same Free during beta (Business/Enterprise) until 15 October 2026 — pushed back from 11 August; credit-metered (~USD$0.0023 per run) thereafter.

AUD figures are shown ex-GST: an AU business with a valid ABN entered in Settings → Billing is not charged GST per Notion's sales-tax help, while unregistered buyers should allow around 10% on top.

Value verdict: Business at ~AUD$28/seat/month ex-GST is the only plan that actually unlocks Notion AI properly. For a Notion-native team, it's defensible. For anyone treating Notion AI as a standalone AI tool, it's not — the same money buys ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro with broader features.

All prices re-verified against notion.com/pricing on 20 September 2026. AUD figures are calculations at 1.4045 (Frankfurter/ECB reference rate, 18 September 2026), not displayed prices.

Australian notes

This is where Notion AI is most clearly built for somewhere else.

  • Available in Australia: Yes — global product, no geographic restriction.
  • Pricing in AUD: No — USD only on the pricing page. Your AU card statement converts at the bank's FX rate.
  • GST treatment: Handled correctly. Notion charges GST at checkout on consumer accounts. Business accounts that enter a valid 11-digit ABN in Settings → Billing are not charged GST on subsequent invoices. The vendor's sales tax help page spells this out. That's the bar, not a strength — but it's at least documented.
  • Data residency: US-West-2 (Oregon) by default. EU (Frankfurt) on Enterprise. Tokyo (primary), Osaka (backup) and Seoul are now live for Enterprise, following the 23 March 2026 announcement — see Notion CTO Fuzzy Khosrowshahi's blog post and the data residency help page. No Australia option. Australia is not on the public roadmap.
  • Data retention with LLM providers: Zero retention on Enterprise. Thirty-day retention on Free, Plus, and Business.
  • AU support: None local. In-app chat support across all plans, Priority support on Business, Premium support on Enterprise. No AU office, no AU support hours, no AU-specific templates surfaced on vendor pages.
  • Compliance: SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001/27701/27017/27018, HIPAA (Enterprise with BAA), BSI C5, GDPR, CCPA. No IRAP listing.
  • AU-aware outputs: None advertised. Notion AI defaults to US English unless you instruct it otherwise.

The punchline: GST is handled correctly, the product works fine for Australians day-to-day, but on the structural questions an Australian buyer should be asking — sovereign data, IRAP, AUD billing, local support — Notion is silent. Tokyo and Seoul made it onto the residency map in May 2026 and Sydney didn't.

Best for

Australian small-to-mid teams (roughly 5 to 50 people) that already live in Notion. If your wiki is in Notion, your projects are in Notion, your meeting notes are in Notion, then the Business upgrade gives you an AI that already knows your context — which is the entire point of workspace AI. The AI Meeting Notes and Enterprise Search features alone do enough work to justify the cost for a team of five or more. Sole operators on the Plus plan get enough of the trial AI to decide whether to upgrade later.

Not great for

Anyone shopping for an AI tool in isolation. Notion AI is the AI layer on top of a workspace product, not a standalone assistant — if your team isn't in Notion already, you're paying for the workspace and getting the AI thrown in. It's also a poor fit for buyers with sovereign-data or IRAP requirements (Australian government, regulated finance, defence, healthcare with strict residency rules), for image-heavy creative work (rate-limited and Business-only), and for teams that want a single tool to handle deep web research with cited sources (Perplexity or ChatGPT do that better).

Alternatives worth considering

App Why you might prefer it
Atlassian Rovo Sydney-founded vendor, Sydney AWS residency for Confluence / Jira / JSM data, IRAP PROTECTED on the underlying Atlassian Cloud platform — the strongest Australian credentials in the workspace-AI category. Worth a hard look if AU sovereignty is non-negotiable.
ChatGPT Better as a standalone general-purpose assistant. Image generation, voice mode, GPT Store, far broader third-party ecosystem. Not workspace-native.
Claude Better for serious long-document and writing work, and Anthropic now has a Sydney office and an MOU with the AU Government on AI safety. Stronger AU posture than Notion. Not workspace-native.

Our verdict

Notion AI is worth the Business upgrade if Notion is already your workspace, and it's hard to recommend if it isn't. The product itself is competent and the pace of improvement is real — Custom Agents going GA in February 2026, the cheaper-and-faster model lineup in April, the Developer Platform in May. But the structural Australian gaps are real too: no AUD pricing, no Sydney residency on the roadmap, no IRAP. For a Notion-native Australian small team, the AI Meeting Notes and Enterprise Search features earn the ~AUD$28/seat. For everyone else, buy ChatGPT or Claude as a standalone, or look at Atlassian Rovo if you need the AU credentials. Start with the Plus plan trial. If you find your team reaching for Notion AI weekly, upgrade to Business.

Scores

Criterion Score Why
Value for Money 3/5 Business at ~AUD$28/seat ex-GST is fair if you use the full AI stack; expensive if you only use the AI casually.
Ease of Use 4/5 If you already know Notion, the AI is intuitive — chat in the sidebar, summarise on a page, run an agent. New-to-Notion users will fight the workspace, not the AI.
Feature Depth 4/5 Notion Agent, Custom Agents, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search, Research Mode, plus the new developer platform — genuinely deep for workspace AI. Image generation is gated and rate-limited.
Australian Fit 2/5 GST handled correctly, but USD-only pricing, no AU data residency on the roadmap (Tokyo + Seoul May 2026, Sydney silent), no IRAP, no AU support — all penalties.
Reliability & Support 4/5 99.9% uptime SLA, published status page, mature SOC 2 / ISO 27001 posture, Notion AI explicitly in scope. Support is web-only globally.

  • 20 Sep 2026 — Re-verified at notion.com/pricing: the Workers add-on still reads "Free to try now. Starts using credits on October 15", so the 15 October 2026 metering date holds and the 11 August 2026 date our record carried until 2 September stays superseded. Plan prices unchanged: Free US$0 · Plus US$10 · Business US$20 per member per month, Enterprise custom, Custom Agents US$10 per 1,000 Notion credits. Frequently asked questions

Is Notion AI available in Australia?

Yes. It's a global product with no geographic restriction. The vendor, Notion Labs, is in San Francisco with no Australian office, but Australian teams can use it normally.

Does Notion AI charge in AUD?

No — pricing is USD-only on the pricing page, so your card converts at the bank's FX rate. The Business plan that unlocks full Notion AI is USD$20/seat/month, roughly AUD$28 ex-GST.

Is there a free plan or free trial?

Yes, but limited. Free and Plus plans get only a "Trial of Notion AI" — generate docs and autofill databases — without Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes or Enterprise Search. Verified students and educators get Plus free.

Where is Notion AI's data stored, and is there an Australian option?

On AWS in US-West-2 (Oregon) by default, with EU and Tokyo/Seoul regions for Enterprise. There's no Australian residency and none on the public roadmap, and no IRAP listing — a real limitation for sovereignty-sensitive buyers.

Who is Notion AI best for?

Australian small-to-mid teams already living in Notion. If your wiki, projects and notes are in Notion, the Business upgrade gives AI that knows your context. If you want a standalone assistant, buy ChatGPT or Claude instead.
