Verdict in one line: A free, frictionless jingle machine for social content — not a Suno killer, and not trying to be.

⚠️ STALENESS FLAG — 5 September 2026. This first look was published 28 February 2026 and is 189 days old. It has not been re-verified against the vendor since. AI products move fast: pricing, model versions, plan names and Australian availability may all have changed. Read the verdict below as a snapshot of February 2026, not as a current recommendation. (House rule: any review over six months old carries this flag until it is updated.)

What launched

On 18 February 2026 Google put Lyria 3, its music generation model, into the Gemini app. Describe an idea — or upload a photo or video — and Gemini generates a 30-second track with custom cover art, the artwork itself generated by Nano Banana. Available to users 18+ in English plus seven other languages, which includes Australia.

What it does

This is music generation as a consumer feature, not a producer tool. The photo-to-music trick is the standout: feed it a shot of your café at golden hour and it returns something that genuinely fits the mood — ready-made for Reels and Shorts where you'd otherwise risk a copyright strike using commercial music.

Pricing for Australians

Free in the Gemini app, with usage limits; paid Google AI plans lift them, starting at A$7.99 a month for AI Plus. Google bills Australians in AUD if you do subscribe.

Australian Fit

Available to Australian adults at launch, in English, free. Every track carries Google's SynthID watermark, so anything you publish is identifiable as AI-generated. The usual offshore-processing caveat applies, and — as with all generative music — the commercial licensing position deserves a careful read of Google's generative-AI terms before you put a generated track behind paid advertising. 4/5.

Early read

Good: zero learning curve; the photo-to-music feature is the most fun we've had testing a tool this year; output quality is consistently "good stock music," which is exactly what social content needs. Not so good: 30 seconds is a hard wall — no full songs, no stems, no extending a track you like; no vocals-with-lyrics control to speak of; serious creators will outgrow it in an afternoon and should look at dedicated tools like Suno or Udio instead.

Early verdict

For Australian small businesses making social video, Lyria 3 quietly solves the "what music can I legally use?" problem for free. Use it for that. Producers and musicians: this isn't your tool, and Google knows it.

Update history
  • 20 Sep 2026 — Staleness check. Re-verified the launch, the limits and Australian availability against Google's announcement. All unchanged. Lyria 3 sits in the Gemini app and makes 30-second tracks with custom cover art, from text or an uploaded image, announced 18 February 2026. It is open to users 18+ in English plus German, Spanish, French, Hindi, Japanese, Korean and Portuguese — Australia included. Higher limits still sit on paid Google AI plans, which now start at A$7.99/month for AI Plus. Two details added that the first look omitted: the cover art is generated by Nano Banana, and every track carries Google's SynthID watermark. Score unchanged at 18/25.
