Hootsuite Review: Powerful Social Management, But AI Is Still Catching Up

The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.
Skip to the verdictVerdict (TL;DR): Hootsuite is the most feature-complete social media management platform in this category. Its OwlyWriter AI writes captions, suggests post ideas, and repurposes URLs into posts — it does this competently but not brilliantly. The problem is the price: Standard is A$129 a user a month, billed annually (Hootsuite's own Australian price). For that money, you are buying a full enterprise-grade social suite, not primarily an AI content tool. If you need scheduling, analytics, social listening, and a unified inbox at professional scale, Hootsuite is a strong choice. If you're shopping for AI content generation, you can do better for less.

What Hootsuite is
Hootsuite is a social media management platform founded in 2008 and headquartered in Vancouver, Canada. It is one of the oldest and most established tools in the category, used by brands, agencies, and government organisations globally.
The core platform — now called Hootsuite Social OS — covers content scheduling and publishing (Perch), social inbox and customer care (Nest), insights and listening (Lumen), AI features (Wisdom), and employee advocacy (Parliament). These are product names Hootsuite uses internally, though you'll encounter the features rather than the branding in day-to-day use.
OwlyWriter AI is Hootsuite's built-in AI writing assistant, included from the Standard plan onwards. Hootsuite has since rebranded its AI suite more broadly under "Wisdom AI," which encompasses OwlyWriter's caption generation, content ideas, post repurposing from URLs, and an AI-driven "best time to post" recommendation engine.
What it costs in Australia
Hootsuite quotes Australian visitors in Australian dollars. It is one of the most expensive social media tools available at the small-business level.
These are Hootsuite's own AUD prices, per user per month on annual billing (read in an Australian browser 30 September 2026). No month-to-month price is shown to Australian visitors. Prices exclude applicable taxes, and Hootsuite does not say how it applies Australian GST, so check the total before you pay.
| Plan | AUD/user/month (annual billing, Hootsuite's price) | USD equivalent (Hootsuite's page data) |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | A$129 | US$99 |
| Professional | A$279 | US$199 |
| Advanced | A$569 | US$399 |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom |
Source: hootsuite.com/plans, read in an Australian browser 30 September 2026 (AUD cards). The USD column comes from the page's structured data, re-read 8 October 2026. The June edition's US$149 for Professional and US$249 for Advanced were wrong; the page's own figures are US$199 and US$399.
Standard includes 10 social accounts. Professional and Advanced include unlimited social accounts. OwlyWriter AI (Wisdom AI) is included on all paid plans from Standard upwards.
There is a 14-day free trial with no credit card required.
How it works in practice
Hootsuite's interface is denser than Buffer or Flick. The learning curve is steeper, but the depth is real. You manage all your social accounts from a centralised dashboard with a content calendar, scheduling queue, unified inbox, and analytics panels.
OwlyWriter / Wisdom AI in practice:
The AI is accessed from within the publishing workflow. You have several options:
- Generate from a prompt — type a topic, choose a tone (informative, funny, professional, persuasive), select a platform, and Hootsuite generates a caption. Output is usable in most cases; rarely exceptional.
- Generate from a URL — paste a blog post or landing page URL and OwlyWriter summarises it into a social post. This works reliably and is the feature's most practical application.
- Repurpose existing posts — take a high-performing historical post and ask OwlyWriter to generate fresh variations of it.
- Holiday and event captions — OwlyWriter can generate posts based on upcoming calendar events and holidays, which is useful for maintaining a consistent posting presence.
- Image generation — Hootsuite includes AI image generation in its composer (in beta as of mid-2026). Quality is moderate; Canva integration is the stronger path for visual content.
The AI has a brand voice feature: OwlyWriter analyses your historical posts and attempts to match your established tone. This works better for accounts with a large posting history.
Hootsuite's approval workflows are excellent — AI-generated content sits in a review queue before subscribing, so you always have human oversight before anything goes live.
What it does well
Platform is genuinely enterprise-grade. Hootsuite supports scheduling to all major networks, bulk scheduling (up to 350 posts on Advanced), message routing, team collaboration with approval workflows, and custom reporting. For a marketing team of three or more people managing multiple brands, the collaborative infrastructure alone justifies the price.
Unified inbox. All social messages, comments, and DMs from connected accounts arrive in a single inbox. This is Hootsuite's strongest feature for customer-facing businesses. You can assign messages to team members, set auto-responses, and track response times.
Social listening. Hootsuite's listening tools monitor brand mentions, competitor activity, and keyword trends. Standard includes 7-day search history; Advanced extends to 30 days. No competitor in this review set offers comparable listening at all.
Analytics. Hootsuite produces detailed performance reports by post type, platform, time of day, and team member. Custom reports can be exported and scheduled. For businesses that report social performance to clients or leadership, this is the strongest analytics offering in the mid-market.
OwlyWriter URL summarisation. Paste a URL and get a platform-specific social post. For marketing teams publishing blog content, this removes a genuine friction point. It works consistently and saves real time.
What it doesn't do well
The price is hard to justify on AI alone. At A$129 a user a month just for Standard, you are paying for a full social media management suite. OwlyWriter's AI content generation is competent, but it is not the reason to choose Hootsuite. If you only want AI caption writing, Buffer's free tier does most of what OwlyWriter does at no cost.
OwlyWriter AI is not best-in-class for generation quality. The captions it generates are functional but not inspired. Tools built primarily around AI content — Jasper, Predis.ai, or even Flick's AI Content Lab — produce more creative, better-structured social content. OwlyWriter's strength is workflow integration, not raw output quality.
Per-user pricing is painful for teams. At A$129/user/month (Standard), a three-person team costs A$387 a month. This is a significant outlay for a small business. Larger teams need Advanced, which is A$569/user/month — a four-person team costs A$2,276 a month.
The interface has accumulated complexity. Hootsuite has added features for 15+ years without fully simplifying the experience. New users find it overwhelming. Migrating into Hootsuite from a simpler tool requires time to learn the system.
Canadian company, priced in AUD. Hootsuite is headquartered in Vancouver. Data is processed in North America. Prices are quoted in Australian dollars (since at least September 2026), but there is no AU data residency and no Australia-specific support channel. Hootsuite does have a Trust Centre (trustcenter.hootsuite.com) with security documentation including SOC 2 Type II certification — better transparency than most tools in this review.
Australian fit
Hootsuite is used by Australian organisations including government agencies and major brands. Its social listening and analytics are used in the local market, and the platform has case studies from Australian clients.
AUD pricing is a real gain: you see what you will pay in your own currency. But beyond it there is nothing Australia-specific in the product: no AEST-timezone support team, no AU data residency, and no statement on how Australian GST is handled. The Trust Centre does disclose SOC 2 Type II compliance, which provides some comfort for regulated Australian businesses.
The price point sits firmly in "medium-to-large business" territory by Australian standards. A sole trader or small retail business should not be paying A$129 a month per user for social media scheduling — Buffer or Flick serve them better at a fraction of the cost.
Where Hootsuite earns its price for Australians is in team-based workflows, social listening, and detailed reporting. A digital marketing agency managing multiple client accounts, or a corporate social media team producing volume content, will find the price justifiable.
Alternatives
- Buffer — dramatically cheaper (free to ~$21 AUD/month for 3 channels). Simpler feature set but a genuinely useful AI Assistant for text drafting and repurposing. Best for solo operators and small teams.
- Predis.ai — AI-first social tool with image generation, video generation, and stronger AI content creation. A fraction of Hootsuite's price. Lacks Hootsuite's analytics and listening depth.
- Jasper — if AI writing quality is the priority, Jasper produces better social copy than OwlyWriter and covers more content types. Does not include scheduling.
Bottom line
Hootsuite is excellent at what it was built to do: manage social media at scale for teams. The OwlyWriter/Wisdom AI features add genuine value within that workflow — URL-to-post summarisation is particularly strong, and the approval workflow integration means AI-generated content gets human oversight before it goes live.
What it is not is the best AI social content tool. If you are buying Hootsuite specifically for the AI writing capability, the A$129-a-month floor is extremely expensive for what OwlyWriter delivers. Better AI content tools exist for less money.
The verdict: buy Hootsuite for the platform, and get the AI as a useful included feature. Do not buy it for the AI alone.
Score
| Criterion | Score | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Value for Money | 2/5 | AUD billing helps, but A$129 a user a month is a high entry point, there is no free plan, and Professional (A$279) and Advanced (A$569) are steep. Strong if you use the full platform; poor value if you only need AI content generation. |
| Ease of Use | 3/5 | Powerful but complex. Interface has accumulated 15 years of feature additions. Takes time to learn; excellent once you know it. |
| Feature Depth | 4/5 | Best-in-class social management: scheduling, listening, analytics, inbox, approval workflows. AI (OwlyWriter) is functional but not the platform's strongest asset. |
| Reliability & Support | 3/5 | Platform reliability is excellent. SOC 2 Type II certified. Support quality varies by plan tier — lower tiers rely on self-service. No AEST live support. |
| Australian Fit | 3/5 | Hootsuite's own AUD prices on the plans page, SOC 2 compliance and a published Trust Centre, and a track record with Australian enterprise and government clients. No AU data residency, no AEST support and no stated GST position keep it from 4. |
| Total | 15/25 | ⭐⭐⭐ Good |
Australian Fit is 3/5, below the 4/5 our Methodology requires for a five-star rating or a category Top Pick. Rated ⭐⭐⭐ Good on a raw score of 15/25.
Update history
- 8 Oct 2026 — New edition: re-score after re-checking the AUD prices. Was: 15/25 with Australian Fit 3/5 written as "no AUD pricing" and flagged for re-review. Now: 15/25, all five criteria re-scored and held. AUD pricing replaces the June note's "no AUD pricing", and the 3 holds; a fourth point would need AU data residency, Australian-hours support or a stated GST position, and Hootsuite offers none of them. Value for Money holds at 2: AUD billing helps, but the vendor's own Professional and Advanced prices are higher than the June edition assumed. Source: Hootsuite plans page, Standard A$129, Professional A$279, Advanced A$569 per user a month on annual billing (read in an Australian browser 30 Sep 2026); USD equivalents US$99 / US$199 / US$399 re-confirmed in the page's structured data 8 Oct 2026. The previous edition is kept unchanged and linked above.
- 30 Sep 2026 🇦🇺 POSITIVE — Hootsuite prices in AUD; this review said it was USD-only, and its USD ladder was wrong too.
hootsuite.com/planson an Australian connection: Standard A$129, Professional A$279, Advanced A$569 per user a month on annual billing, "Prices displayed in AUD ... do not include applicable taxes". The page's structured data gives the USD equivalents US$99 / US$199 / US$399, so the June table's Professional "US$149 (estimate)" and Advanced US$249 were also wrong. Table, verdict, meta, excerpt, cost paragraphs (team sums now A$387 and A$2,276), Australian-fit text, both pricing FAQs (body and schema) and schema reviewBody rewritten; a Buffer figure on the 1.55 basis ("~$23 AUD") fixed to ~A$21. Score held at 15/25; Australian Fit (3/5) cited "no AUD pricing" and is flagged for re-review. The Buffer comparison and the Buffer review synced.aud_native: true(web). Sentry 12 reported this review under “no first-party URL (sentry blind here)” for three consecutive runs. No claim, figure or score changes.reviewed:untouched per our dating rule. - 24 Sep 2026 — The grossed-up AUD column removed from the pricing table. The table carried a second Australian column adding 10% GST to every converted figure, so each plan had two Australian prices and the higher one asserted a tax most of our readers do not pay: a GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service. The ex-GST column is unchanged and is the price. Removed, and kept visible here per our price-history rule — the column headed “AUD inc. GST est.”: Standard ~$168; Professional ~$229; Advanced ~$383.
reviewed:untouched per our dating rule. - 24 Sep 2026 — 4 Australian figures recut, in the spelling nothing was checking. These write the currency AFTER the number (“$153 AUD”), and sentry 18's pattern required it BEFORE, so every one of them was invisible to the 6 September corpus-wide reconciliation and to every sweep since. They were cut at about 1.55, the retired basis. Recut at US$1 = A$1.4045 (Frankfurter/ECB, 18 September 2026), ex-GST per our GST rule, and kept visible per our price-history rule: $1,543 AUD → $1,399 AUD; $153 AUD → $139 AUD; $386 AUD → $350 AUD; $460 AUD → $417 AUD. No USD price moved and no score changed.
