Hootsuite vs Buffer for Australian Businesses in 2026: Agency Suite or Solo Scheduler?

By Adam · 30 Jun 2026 · 9 min read
Head-to-head verdict

Our pick: Buffer. The verdict below says who should buy the other.

Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).

Winner: Buffer for the typical Australian buyer — the solo operator or small business that just wants posts out on time. It is cheaper, simpler, and the free plan covers most small businesses. Buy Hootsuite only if you manage multiple clients or run a team that needs approvals, social listening, and a shared inbox.

This is the oldest rivalry in social scheduling. Hootsuite launched in 2008, Buffer in 2010, and the two have been pulling in opposite directions ever since. Hootsuite kept adding — listening, analytics, inbox routing, approval chains — until it became a full enterprise suite. Buffer did the opposite. It stayed lean, stayed cheap, and stayed easy.

That split is the whole decision. One tool is built for an agency or a multi-client manager. The other is built for one person who wants a week of posts queued before lunch. Below is who should buy which, in Australian dollars, with GST flagged.

We reviewed both separately. Hootsuite scored 15/25 (⭐⭐⭐ Good) and Buffer 15/25 (⭐⭐⭐ Good) — level, since Buffer's Value for Money was corrected from 5/5 to 4/5 on 21 September 2026 for having no AUD pricing. This piece does not re-score them — it decides between them for an Australian buyer, and on that question the tie is not remotely close.

AUD figures convert USD at ~1.40 shown ex-GST. Both vendors bill in USD; verify GST treatment on your tax invoice. See pricing detail below.

What both tools actually do

Both let you write social posts once and schedule them to go out later across Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X/Twitter, TikTok and more, from a single dashboard. You batch a week of content in one sitting, set the times, and the tool publishes for you. Both also bundle an AI writing helper that drafts captions and repurposes a blog post into social copy.

That is where the overlap ends. Hootsuite is a management platform — scheduling is one feature among many. It adds a unified social inbox, brand-mention listening, deep analytics, and team approval workflows. It is built for several people managing several brands.

Buffer is a scheduler and little else, by design. It does the queue brilliantly and stops there. No social listening, no full inbox, thin analytics. For one person posting for one business, that focus is a feature, not a gap.

Pricing in Australia

Neither tool bills in Australian dollars. Both charge USD, so your card gets the exchange rate on the day plus any GST your accountant applies. We convert at roughly 1.40 shown ex-GST below.

The pricing models differ, and that matters more than the headline numbers. Hootsuite charges per user. Buffer charges per channel.

Plan USD (annual billing) AUD (Buffer: our conversion ex-GST; Hootsuite: its own AUD price) Unit
Buffer Free US$0 A$0 Up to 3 channels
Buffer Essentials US$5/channel/mo ~A$7/channel/mo Per channel, 1 user
Buffer Team US$10/channel/mo ~A$14/channel/mo Per channel, unlimited users
Hootsuite Standard US$99/user/mo A$129/user/mo 1 user, 10 social accounts
Hootsuite Professional US$199/user/mo A$279/user/mo Per user, unlimited accounts
Hootsuite Advanced US$399/user/mo A$569/user/mo Per user, unlimited accounts

The gap is stark. A Melbourne sole trader running Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn pays Buffer US$15/month on Essentials (three channels) — roughly A$21/month ex-GST. The same three accounts on Hootsuite means at least one Standard seat at A$129/month (Hootsuite's own AUD price, billed annually). That is about six times the cost before you have used a single extra feature.

Buffer's free plan has no real equivalent on the Hootsuite side. Hootsuite offers only a 14-day trial, then the meter starts at A$129. For a small business testing the water, that alone settles a lot of decisions.

Where Hootsuite's price stops looking absurd is at scale. An agency managing 30 client channels on Buffer Team would pay per channel and the bill climbs fast; Hootsuite's unlimited-accounts tiers (Professional and Advanced) can work out cheaper per account once you are juggling dozens of profiles across a team.

Where Hootsuite wins

  • Approval workflows. AI-drafted or human-drafted content sits in a review queue before it publishes. For an agency that needs a client or manager to sign off, this is essential. Buffer only offers approvals on its Team plan, and they are simpler.
  • Social listening. Hootsuite monitors brand mentions, competitor activity and keyword trends. Standard includes 7-day search history; higher tiers extend it. Buffer has no listening at all.
  • Unified inbox. Every comment and DM across connected accounts lands in one inbox, with messages you can assign to team members. Buffer's community inbox is narrower and skips some channels.
  • Analytics depth. Hootsuite produces detailed, exportable, scheduled reports by platform, post type and team member. This is the strongest reporting in the mid-market and the reason agencies justify the seat cost to clients.
  • Bulk scheduling at volume. Higher tiers handle large content volumes across many accounts — built for teams pushing hundreds of posts.

Where Buffer wins

  • Price. Roughly A$21/month ex-GST for three channels versus A$139/month for one Hootsuite seat. For most Australian small businesses, that is the whole argument.
  • A genuinely useful free plan. Three channels, the full AI Assistant, basic analytics and a community inbox — free, forever. A tradie running a Facebook Page and an Instagram account may never need to pay.
  • Simplicity. Setup takes minutes. The interface is clean. Hootsuite has accumulated 15 years of features and the learning curve shows.
  • Per-channel value. You pay only for the channels you use, and the per-channel rate drops as you add more. You are not buying a whole enterprise suite to schedule three accounts.
  • Platform breadth. Buffer publishes to a wide spread of networks — including Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads and LinkedIn PDF carousels — strong coverage for the price.

On the AI: a wash, and not the deciding factor

Both bundle an AI writing helper, and neither should sway your choice. Hootsuite's OwlyWriter (now under its Wisdom AI banner) drafts captions, generates posts from a URL, and repurposes old posts. Buffer's AI Assistant does much the same — ideas, repurposing, tone edits — with no usage cap, free on every plan.

Our verdict in both reviews was the same: the AI is competent, not class-leading, and it is not the reason to buy either tool. Neither generates strong original content the way a dedicated AI tool does. If AI content quality is your priority, neither of these is your answer. Choose on price, workflow and team needs instead.

Australian fit

Neither tool is built for Australia, and both score modestly on our Australian Fit criterion — Hootsuite 3/5, Buffer 2/5.

Hootsuite now prices in AUD; Buffer does not. Neither offers AU data residency or an AEST live-support line. Hootsuite edges ahead on transparency: it publishes a Trust Centre with SOC 2 Type II certification, which gives regulated Australian businesses something concrete to check. Buffer's support is async — email and help centre, no live chat — which means a delay across the AEST time difference when something breaks.

For data residency, both process offshore: Hootsuite in North America, Buffer in the United States. Australian businesses handling client social data in regulated sectors should read each vendor's privacy policy and data-processing agreement before committing. Neither lets you keep data onshore.

On GST: both bill in USD with no GST itemised at checkout, so budget 10% on top and confirm the treatment on your tax invoice with your accountant.

Which to pick — decision framework

  • You are a sole trader or small business posting for one brand? Buy Buffer. Start on the free plan. Move to Essentials only when you outgrow three channels.
  • You run a team that needs sign-off before posts go live? Buy Hootsuite. The approval workflow is the feature you are paying for.
  • You manage multiple clients as an agency or freelancer? Buy Hootsuite. Listening, reporting and the unified inbox are what clients pay you to deliver.
  • You report social performance to a board or client every month? Buy Hootsuite for the analytics.
  • You just want a week of posts queued without fuss? Buy Buffer. Anything more is money spent on features you will not open.

The verdict

For the typical Australian buyer — the 35-year-old Melbourne business owner who wants a consistent social presence without hiring a social media manager — Buffer wins, comfortably. It is cheaper by a factor of seven at entry level, faster to learn, and its free plan covers most small businesses outright. The two now score the same, 15/25 apiece — Buffer lost a point on 21 September 2026 when its Value for Money was corrected for USD-only billing, and Hootsuite bills in USD too. The scoreboard has stopped separating them, and it was never what separated them. Price, learning curve and a free plan that covers most small businesses outright are what decide this, and all three point the same way.

Hootsuite is not beaten so much as aimed elsewhere. It is the right tool for agencies and multi-client teams that need approvals, listening, a shared inbox and serious reporting. For them, the A$139-plus monthly seat is justified by infrastructure Buffer simply does not have. A small operator paying that price is buying an enterprise suite to do a job a A$24 scheduler does better.

So: unless you manage several brands or run a team that needs approval chains and social listening, buy Buffer. Most Australian small businesses will start on its free plan and never need to leave it. The agencies know who they are — and for them, Hootsuite earns its keep.

Update history
  • 30 Sep 2026 — Hootsuite prices in AUD; this comparison said neither tool did. Read in a browser on an Australian connection, Hootsuite's plans page shows Standard A$129, Professional A$279 and Advanced A$569 per user a month (annual billing, excluding taxes). The cost comparison, currency notes and two FAQs (body and schema) now use Hootsuite's AUD prices; Buffer (re-read the same day) stays USD. The gap narrows from seven times to about six; the verdict stands.
  • 21 Sep 2026 — Both tools' AUD figures were grossed up 10% for GST, and the Hootsuite one contradicted the rest of the comparison. Buffer's three channels read A$24/month inc. GST and Hootsuite's Standard seat A$152/month inc. GST; at USD→AUD 1.4045 (ECB reference rate, 18 September 2026) they are A$21 and A$139 ex-GST. The piece already used A$139 for Hootsuite in three other places, including the verdict, so the same seat carried two Australian prices. Buffer's own per-channel figure in the FAQ — about A$7 per channel ex-GST — gives A$21 for three, not A$24. Our GST rule retired the gross-up: a GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service. Fixed in the body, the verdict, both FAQ answers and both JSON-LD twins. No USD price moved and no score changed — Buffer is still roughly a sixth of a Hootsuite seat, which is the whole argument. Superseded figures kept visible per our price-history rule.
