Hnry vs Thriday (2026): Hands-Off Tax or Self-Serve Finance?

By Adam · 28 Jun 2026 · 8 min read
Head-to-head verdict

Our pick: Hnry. The verdict below says who should buy the other.

⚠ Thriday is now Tyro Accounting. thriday.com.au redirects to tyro.com/accounting/, and the plans, prices and brand compared below are Thriday as it stood in June 2026. The comparison is kept as a dated record; a re-review under the Tyro brand is queued. (Redirect read at primary, 23 September 2026.)

The short version: These two tools answer the same dread — Australian self-employment admin — from opposite directions. Hnry is the done-for-them service: money lands, tax and GST are deducted on the spot, real accountants lodge your returns, and you barely touch it. Thriday is the self-serve platform: an Australian business bank account whose transactions become your books, with a live tax estimate and optional human lodgment, all driven by you. Hnry scores 24/25 in our review; Thriday 20/25. The winner for the typical Australian buyer depends on one question — do you want the work gone, or do you want to keep your hands on the wheel?

The tension

Both tools were built for the same person: the sole trader or micro-business owner who is good at their actual job and terrible at tax admin. Both are genuinely Australian. Both fold invoicing, expenses, GST and lodgment into one place. And yet they could not feel more different to live with.

Hnry takes the work away. You stop being your own bookkeeper. Income routes through a Hnry account, tax is skimmed before the rest hits your bank, and a team of accountants files the BAS and the annual return for you. It is closer to hiring a service than buying software.

Thriday hands you the controls. It gives you a real business bank account, turns the transactions flowing through it into live books, and shows you, in real time, what to set aside for tax. You can have a registered agent lodge for you at the top tiers — but the default posture is that you drive, and the software does the heavy lifting.

So this is not a feature shoot-out. It is a question about temperament. One buyer wants tax to disappear. The other wants a smart cockpit and is happy to fly the plane.

The structures reward different incomes. Hnry's 1% is brilliant value at higher earnings — on $200,000 you still only pay the $1,500 +GST cap, and the fee is claimed back as a deduction. On modest, steady income, the maths is closer: a sole trader around $40,000–$60,000 who needs only an annual return prepared might pay a flat-fee accountant less in raw dollars. You are buying year-round automation, not just a lodgment.

Thriday's free tier is the real on-ramp. If you only need banking and invoicing, it genuinely costs nothing. Time-Saver at $299/year undercuts what many bookkeepers charge for a single quarter. The Done-for-You tiers add a human agent but ask for an annual commitment — and note the $88/month "Done-for-You Tax" tier does not include assisted BAS; that is the $119/month tier.

The defining mechanical difference is where your money lives and who moves it. With Hnry, every client payment lands in a Hnry account first, gets its tax deducted, and is forwarded to your personal bank — usually within minutes. That hand-off is the product. Hnry also flexes your tax rate up and down across the year based on what you have actually earned, so over-payments come back as you go rather than as a refund months after 30 June. That is a real cash-flow advantage on variable income.

Thriday's magic is that it owns the bank feed, so reconciliation never happens as a chore — it happened already, at the moment money moved. The live tax estimate is its standout: most apps make you wait for the BAS or do the maths yourself, while Thriday shows the figure to set aside as income arrives. The price of that magic is structural — it only fully works if you move your business banking across. Keep your existing CommBank or NAB account and you lose most of what makes Thriday special.

Note the honest limit on both: neither is a full accounting suite. No payroll for staff, no inventory, no deep double-entry reporting. A growing company with employees will outgrow either and want Xero or MYOB. Both tools know this and aim deliberately at the one-person end.

Australian fit

This is where both earn their place in an Australian directory — and where the gap between them is narrow but real.

Hnry bills natively in AUD, quotes its fee "+GST", and lodges directly with the ATO through its own accounting team. The Hnry account runs on Monoova, which holds AFSL 421414 — regulated, locally licensed payments infrastructure, not an offshore workaround. The one caveat we flagged: Hnry's privacy policy says it may store customer information "in New Zealand, Australia or overseas," so it does not guarantee onshore-only data residency. It is New Zealand-founded but runs a genuine Australian operation. We scored its Australian Fit 5/5.

Thriday is Australian-built, AUD-native, and its banking sits behind a real ADI — transaction accounts and Visa Debit cards are issued by Regional Australia Bank (AFSL 241167), with deposits protected by the Financial Claims Scheme up to $250,000. The Done-for-You lodgments are handled by a registered Australian tax agent. Its one asterisk is sharper than Hnry's: Thriday holds ISO 27001 certification but does not clearly disclose where customer data is physically hosted, and its policy notes some providers "may be located outside Australia." That undisclosed data location is why we held its Australian Fit at 4/5 and its Reliability & Support at 3/5.

Both clear the Australian Fit gate (≥4/5). The difference: Hnry's local fit is unambiguous bar one privacy-policy line; Thriday's is excellent on banking and tax but thinner on disclosed data residency. For a finance tool, that disclosure gap matters, and it is the main reason the two scores diverge.

These are our existing review scores, not re-scored for this piece. Hnry is Excellent and our Top Pick for sole-trader tax; Thriday is Very Good and one point under the five-star line on the raw maths.

Who buys which

Buy Hnry if you want the work gone. You are a sole trader or contractor who dreads tax — the BAS, the receipts, the year-end scramble — and you would happily hand the whole thing to someone else. You are comfortable letting your income route through a Hnry account on the way to your bank. You value real accountants on call, included in the fee. The higher and more variable your income, the better Hnry's capped 1% and year-round tax-rate flexing serve you. This is a service that makes tax a background process.

Buy Thriday if you want to keep your hands on the wheel. You are a sole trader or micro-business owner who wants visibility and control — a real business bank account you operate, a live tax figure you can watch, books that keep themselves without you surrendering the money flow. You are willing to move your business banking across to get the automation, and a $0 free tier to start on appeals. You want the option of a human agent at the top tier without being locked into a service from day one.

Buy neither — yet — if you run a company or trust with payroll, staff and inventory. Both are built for the individual ABN and the small end. You want Xero or MYOB with an accountant, and you can use either of these as a clean starting point and graduate later.

The data-residency split: if onshore-only data storage is a hard requirement, get a written answer before you commit — from Hnry on its "or overseas" clause, and from Thriday on its undisclosed hosting location. Hnry's other local credentials are slightly stronger on the public record today.

The verdict

For the typical Australian buyer this comparison is aimed at — the sole trader who simply wants tax, BAS and invoicing handled — Hnry is the winner. It scores higher (24/25 vs 20/25), it carries the cleaner Australian-fit profile, and it does the one thing that buyer actually wants: it takes the work away rather than handing them a better tool to do it themselves. The capped, deductible, pay-as-you-earn fee is unusually fair for variable income, and there is no subscription to carry in a quiet month.

But the win is conditional, and Thriday's case is genuinely strong. If you would rather keep your own business bank account in spirit — operate the money, see the numbers, drive the process — Thriday gives you a smarter cockpit than anything else built locally, with a free tier to prove itself before you pay a cent. It loses this head-to-head not because it is worse software, but because the buyer we are describing wants less control, not more.

Pick by temperament. Want tax to disappear? Hnry. Want to fly the plane with better instruments? Thriday. For the admin-averse Australian sole trader who asked us to choose, the answer is Hnry.
