Verdict in one line: The first AI subscription priced for people who flinch at $30 a month — and the easiest "just upgrade me a bit" answer in the Australian market.
⚠️ STALENESS FLAG — 5 September 2026. This first look was published 20 February 2026 and is 197 days old. It has not been re-verified against the vendor since. AI products move fast: pricing, model versions, plan names and Australian availability may all have changed. Read the verdict below as a snapshot of February 2026, not as a current recommendation. (House rule: any review over six months old carries this flag until it is updated.)
What launched
Across late January and February 2026 Google rolled out Google AI Plus — a budget tier sitting between free Gemini and the Google AI Pro/Ultra plans — to Australia and then to every market where Google sells AI plans. In the US it launched at US$7.99/month with 50% off the first two months; pricing varies by country.
What it does
AI Plus buys you twice the free tier's Gemini usage limits plus video generation, 200 Google Flow credits for AI filmmaking, more Nano Banana in Search, Gemini Notebook research features, 400 GB of cloud storage, and family sharing for up to five others. It's the "most of the good models, some of the limits" tier. Google has since moved higher Gemini 3 Pro access up to the AI Pro tier.
Pricing for Australians
A$7.99 a month, billed through Google's Australian billing — a genuine plus over USD-billed rivals. (Google sets pricing per country.) That's under a quarter of a Claude Pro subscription at A$34 a month, and it has held at A$7.99 across four checks since 10 September 2026.
Australian Fit
Available here since late January, AUD billing, GST sorted, English-first product. Data processing remains offshore, and the cheapest tier gets the slowest lane when capacity tightens. 4/5.
Early read
Good: family sharing makes this the obvious household AI plan; storage bundling means you're partly paying for something you already needed; a frontier lab's assistant at A$7.99 embarrasses the US$20 standard tier across the industry. Not so good: usage caps are real — heavy daily users will hit them and end up on Pro anyway; the plan's value depends on you living inside Google's ecosystem; and Google's history of renaming and reshuffling subscriptions means today's inclusions deserve a quarterly check.
Early verdict
For households and sole traders who want capable AI without a US$20/month commitment, AI Plus at A$7.99 is the value pick in the Australian market right now. Power users should skip straight to Pro — the caps will find you.

Update history
- 20 Sep 2026 — Staleness check, and a price correction. Re-verified price, storage and inclusions against Google's Australian subscriptions page. AI Plus is A$7.99/month, was A$12.99/month on our February record — a fall of A$5. It has held at A$7.99 across four checks since 10 September. Storage is 400 GB, was 200GB. Inclusions restated: 2× the free tier's Gemini usage limits, video generation, 200 Google Flow credits, more Nano Banana in Search, and Gemini Notebook. The AU page no longer names Gemini 3 Pro at this tier — higher access to Gemini 3 Pro now sits on AI Pro (A$32.99/month). Score unchanged at 20/25; the value case is stronger, not weaker.
