The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.

Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).

Verdict (TL;DR): Speechify is a read-aloud app that turns articles, PDFs, emails and textbooks into audio you can listen to on the train or at your desk. For consuming content hands-free it's one of the better options going, and Premium at about USD$139/year (~AUD$16/month) is fair value if you'll genuinely use it daily. But be clear about what you're buying. The consumer app is for listening, not producing — and it shares a brand with a completely separate product, Speechify Studio, which is the one with voice cloning and commercial rights for making voiceovers. If your goal is to make polished narration for videos or ads, this review will tell you to use ElevenLabs or Murf instead. Australian fit is weak across the board: USD-only billing, GST added at checkout, no AU data residency, no local support.

Who this is for (and who it isn't)

Speechify gets bought by the wrong people constantly, because the name covers two products that do opposite jobs. Sort yourself first.

Speechify is for you if you want things read to you — you've got a reading pile of articles, PDFs, work documents, study notes or emails, and you'd rather listen on a commute, a walk, or while your eyes are tired. It's also a genuine accessibility tool for dyslexia, ADHD and low vision. That's the consumer app, and it's good at this one job.

Speechify is not for you if you want to produce voiceovers — narration for a YouTube channel, an explainer video, a training module or an ad read. The consumer app isn't built for that. There is a separate product, Speechify Studio, that does it, but for making voiceovers we think ElevenLabs (best quality and Australian-accent control) or Murf (predictable, editor-led) are the stronger buys. Read our Best AI Voice Generators in Australia roundup for the producer's view.

Hold that distinction in your head for the rest of this review. It's the single biggest source of buyer confusion in the whole category.

What Speechify is

Speechify is a text-to-speech reader. You feed it text — paste it, upload a PDF, point its mobile camera at a printed page, share a web article to it, or import a document — and it reads the text aloud in a synthetic voice, at a speed you control, with the words highlighted as it goes. It runs as a web app, browser extension, and iOS and Android apps, so you can start reading on your laptop and finish on your phone.

The free tier gives you a small set of basic voices and reading up to 1.5× speed. The paid Premium tier is where the product comes alive: a much larger voice library, more languages, faster playback up to 5×, offline downloads, and document-scanning features (Speechify — Pricing).

Then there's the other product. Speechify Studio is a separate, creator-facing tool with its own pricing page, built for producing audio — voiceover generation, AI dubbing, a voice changer, and AI voice cloning with commercial usage rights (Speechify — Studio Pricing). It is not the same thing as the read-aloud app, it isn't included in a Premium subscription, and it's billed separately. We'll cover both below, but the headline is simple: the app is for listening, Studio is for making.

What it costs in Australia

Speechify bills in US dollars on the web. The figures below are converted at AUD ≈ 1.40 × USD, with around 10% GST expected at an Australian checkout under the imported-digital-services rules. (Corrected 21 Sep 2026 — this line previously said Speechify bills in USD, full stop. It bills Australians in Australian dollars inside the app; see below.)

Product / Plan Price (USD) Price (AUD est., ex-GST) What you get
App — Free $0 $0 Basic robotic-sounding voices, listen up to 1.5× speed, text-to-speech only
App — Premium (annual) ~USD$139/yr (≈ USD$11.58/mo) ~AUD$16/mo (~AUD$195/yr) Large natural-voice library, 60+ languages, up to 5× speed, offline downloads, scan-and-listen, AI summaries
App — Premium (monthly) up to USD$29/mo ~AUD$41/mo Same as annual, billed month-to-month at a much higher effective rate
Studio — Free $0 $0 600 Studio credits, access to the realistic-voice library, voiceover/dubbing/voice-changer — no cloning, no commercial rights
Studio — Starter USD$19/mo ~AUD$27/mo 7,200 credits, voice cloning, commercial usage rights, stock media
Studio — Creator USD$49/mo ~AUD$69/mo 28,800 credits, cloning, commercial rights ("Best Value")

Pricing as of 3 June 2026. Sources: speechify.com/pricing and speechify.com/pricing-studio/. The USD$139/year Premium figure is the consistent annual price across the market; the live page advertises "60% savings" on annual versus the up-to-USD$29 monthly rate (TextToLab — Speechify pricing). Studio credits convert at 1 credit/second for voiceover, 3/second for dubbing and 30/second for avatars. Speechify publishes no AU-specific GST guidance — confirm the GST line on your first invoice and check it's a compliant tax invoice carrying an ABN reference if you're claiming the input credit.

Inside the iPhone or iPad app, it is Australian dollars — on a ladder with four live annual prices.

The Australian App Store listing declares "priceCurrency":"AUD" and names Speechify Inc. as seller of record. Read 21 September 2026:

In-app purchase Price Against the web
Premium — monthly A$19.99 (a second tier lists A$39.99) About A$18 ex-GST against the up-to-US$29 (~A$41) web monthly rate — much cheaper
Premium — annual A$89.99 / A$129.99 / A$229.99 / A$249.99 Our web conversion is ~A$195/yr, so the ladder sits both sides of it
Speechify Library A$39.99 Add-on, no web equivalent published

Read that second row carefully before you buy. Apple lists every live in-app purchase, including legacy and experiment tiers, and Speechify has four annual ones running at once. Two are well below our web figure and two are above it, so check the price the app actually quotes you rather than trusting any number — ours included. GST is included in all of them and Apple's receipt is a valid Australian tax invoice, which the web path does not give you.

The monthly finding is the useful one: A$19.99 a month in the app takes most of the sting out of the annual-versus-monthly trap described below.

Value verdict: Premium is fair value if you'll genuinely use it. At ~AUD$16/month on annual billing, a reader who listens to articles or study material every day gets their money's worth easily. The trap is the annual-versus-monthly gap: the monthly plan at up to USD$29 (~AUD$41) is roughly two-and-a-half times the effective annual rate, which quietly pressures you into a 12-month commitment to get a sane price. Try the free tier first and make sure the listening habit is real before you lock in a year. As for Studio, judge it on its own merits against ElevenLabs and Murf — and on quality and accent control, we think it comes second.

How it works in practice

In the app, you add something to read — paste text, upload a PDF, snap a photo of a page on mobile, or share a web article from your browser. Speechify parses it, picks a voice, and starts reading, highlighting each word as it speaks so you can follow along. You scrub speed up or down, and on Premium you can push playback to 5× once your ear adjusts — which is the feature heavy users swear by for getting through a backlog.

The voices are the draw. The free tier's basic voices sound flat and synthetic; Premium's natural voices are a clear step up and pleasant to listen to for long stretches, which matters when you're an hour into a report. Offline downloads on Premium mean you can queue a document and listen on a flight or a patchy-reception train line without burning mobile data.

Speechify Studio is a different workflow entirely. It's a producer's console: you type or paste a script, choose from the realistic-voice library, generate a voiceover, and edit it — or clone a voice, or dub existing audio into another language. It bills by credits rather than a flat monthly allowance, which makes long projects harder to budget than Murf's hours-based model. It's competent. It's just not the category leader, and most Australians arriving at "Speechify" want the reading app, not this.

What it does well

  • Genuinely good at reading documents aloud. Paste, upload or scan, and it reads — with word-level highlighting and speed up to 5× on Premium. For getting through a reading pile, it's one of the best in the category.
  • Real accessibility tool. Built with dyslexia, ADHD and low-vision users in mind, not as an afterthought. The highlighting-while-reading is the kind of feature that makes a daily difference.
  • Works everywhere you read. Web app, browser extension, iOS and Android. Start on your laptop, finish on your phone — the cross-device handoff is the point of the product.
  • Offline downloads on Premium. Queue a document and listen on a flight or a dead-zone commute without streaming. Small feature, big quality-of-life win.
  • A free tier that's actually a fair trial. No credit card to start, and enough to test whether the listening habit sticks before you commit to an annual plan.

What it doesn't do well

  • The app-versus-Studio split confuses buyers. Two products, two pricing pages, one brand. People pay for Premium expecting voiceover production, or pay for Studio expecting a reading app. Speechify does little to make the distinction obvious before you've spent money.
  • The consumer app can't produce polished voiceovers. It's a reader, not a studio. If you want narration for a video or ad, Premium is the wrong purchase — and that's not always clear from the marketing.
  • Studio is a second-tier producer tool. For making voiceovers, ElevenLabs has better raw quality and Australian-accent control, and Murf has a calmer, hours-based billing model. Studio's credit system is harder to budget.
  • The annual-vs-monthly price gap pressures a yearly lock-in. At up to USD$29/month, the monthly plan is punishingly expensive next to the ~USD$11.58 effective annual rate, nudging you to commit 12 months upfront.
  • Inconsistent voice-count claims. The live pricing page advertises "1000+" voices while Speechify's own marketing elsewhere says "200+." The number you actually get depends on tier and language — don't buy on the headline figure alone (Speechify — Pricing).

Australian fit

  • Available in Australia: Yes. Web, extension and mobile apps all work from Australia with self-serve signup. (speechify.com/pricing)
  • Pricing in AUD: In the app, yes; on the web, no. The Australian App Store bills Premium in Australian dollars with GST included — A$19.99/month, and annual tiers running from A$89.99 to A$249.99 — on an Apple tax invoice. speechify.com is USD only: expect roughly AUD$16/month landed on annual Premium after FX, ex-GST, or up to ~AUD$41/month on monthly billing. (Corrected 21 Sep 2026 — this line previously read "No. USD only.")
  • GST: Speechify's pricing pages make no GST statement (checked 3 June 2026), so on the web expect ~10% added at checkout under Australia's imported-digital-services rules — confirm on your first invoice and check it's a compliant tax invoice with an ABN reference for your accountant. In the app the question is settled: Apple bills Australians through its Australian entity, GST is already in the A$ figure, and the receipt is a valid tax invoice.
  • Data residency: None advertised for Australia. US-based vendor; text and documents you submit are processed offshore. For voice cloning in Studio, that's a privacy-and-consent question worth taking seriously, especially under the Privacy Act reforms now in force.
  • AU accent support: The voice libraries are dominated by US and UK voices; Australian-accent options are thin compared with ElevenLabs. For reading-aloud this matters less; for producing AU-facing voiceovers it matters a lot.
  • Local AU support: None advertised. No AU office, no AU business hours, no local phone line. Support is via the vendor's standard channels.

Alternatives

App Why you might prefer it
ElevenLabs The quality benchmark for producing voiceovers, with the strongest Australian-accent control via v3 audio tags. The right tool if you're making narration, not consuming it. (Read our voice roundup →)
Murf AI Predictable, hours-based billing and a proper studio editor for everyday business voiceovers. Calmer than a credit meter — better than Speechify Studio for most non-technical creators.
Native device TTS If you only occasionally need something read aloud, iOS "Spoken Content," Android "Select to Speak," and the read-aloud in Edge or Word are free, on-device, and keep your data local. Lower quality, zero cost.

Bottom line

Speechify earns its place for one job: reading your documents and articles aloud, well, across every device you own. If you're a commuter, a student, or anyone with a reading pile and tired eyes — or you need it for accessibility — Premium at roughly AUD$16/month on annual billing is a fair buy, and the free tier lets you prove the habit first. On that job, it's one of the better tools in the category.

But buy it for what it is. The consumer app is for listening. The producer's tool — Speechify Studio — is a separate purchase that comes second to ElevenLabs and Murf on quality, accent control and budgeting. If you arrived here wanting to make voiceovers, that's the wrong door; read our voice generators roundup and start with ElevenLabs or Murf.

It scores 15 rather than higher for two reasons. The product split is genuinely confusing and costs buyers money. And the Australian posture is weak right across the line — USD-only billing, GST at checkout, no AU data residency, thin AU-accent options, and no local support. We'd expect to refresh this inside six months; Speechify iterates often, and the voice-count and pricing claims are the most likely to move.

Score

Criterion Score Notes
Value for Money 3/5 ~AUD$16/mo annual Premium is fair if used daily. The in-app monthly at A$19.99 largely defuses the web monthly rate's yearly-lock-in pressure, but Apple lists four live annual prices between A$89.99 and A$249.99, which straddle our web figure — a ladder you cannot price in advance is its own value problem. (Rationale corrected 21 Sep 2026; mark unchanged — see Update history.)
Ease of Use 4/5 The reading app is genuinely easy — paste, scan or share and it reads. Marred only by the app-vs-Studio confusion at purchase
Feature Depth 3/5 Strong as a reader (highlighting, 5× speed, offline, scan); the separate Studio adds cloning and dubbing but trails category leaders
Australian Fit 2/5 Real AUD billing with GST included exists on the Australian App Store (Premium A$19.99/month), which corrects two of the five failures this row was built on. The other three hold and are the serious ones: no AU data residency, thin Australian-accent voices, no local support — and the web checkout is still USD-only with GST added. (Rationale corrected 21 Sep 2026; mark unchanged — see Update history.)
Reliability & Support 3/5 Established multi-platform product with a large user base; support is vendor-standard with no AU hours
Total 15/25 ⭐⭐⭐ Good
Update history
  • 21 Sep 2026 — Speechify does sell to Australians in Australian dollars, in the app — but on a ladder that brackets our web figure on both sides, so no score moves. This review says "Pricing in AUD: No. USD only" and scores Australian Fit 2/5 partly on that. The Australian App Store listing declares "priceCurrency":"AUD", names Speechify Inc. as seller and carries Premium Monthly at A$19.99 and A$39.99, and Premium annual tiers at A$89.99, A$129.99, A$229.99 and A$249.99, all GST included on an Apple tax invoice. Four live annual price points is the finding, not one price. Against our published ~A$195/year web conversion, A$89.99 and A$129.99 are far cheaper and A$229.99 and A$249.99 are dearer — the in-app ladder brackets the web price, so we cannot tell a reader what they will pay, and we will not claim a saving we cannot evidence. The one unambiguous gain is monthly: A$19.99 in the app is about A$18 ex-GST against the up-to-US$29 (~A$41) web monthly rate, which substantially weakens this review's complaint that the monthly plan "quietly pressures you into a 12-month commitment". That is in the pricing section now. Value for Money holds at 3/5 — an opaque ladder you cannot price in advance is a value problem in its own right, the same reason Photomath was held off five this morning. Australian Fit holds at 2/5: two of its five named failures (currency, GST) are corrected, but no AU data residency, thin Australian-accent voices and no local support are three that are not. Was: "Pricing in AUD: No. USD only." Found by the app-store pricing pass, Audits/app-store-pricing-2026-09-21.md. Source · Wayback: capture pending (archive.org saving unavailable 21 Sep 2026).

Frequently asked questions

Is Speechify available in Australia?

Yes. The web app, browser extension and iOS and Android apps all work from Australia with self-serve signup. There's no AU office or local support, but access isn't an issue.

Does Speechify charge in AUD?

It depends where you buy. On speechify.com, no — billing is USD only, and Premium lands around A$16/month on annual billing (or up to ~A$41/month monthly) after FX, with about 10% GST expected at checkout. In the iPhone or iPad app, yes: the Australian App Store charges A$19.99/month for Premium with GST included, on an Apple tax invoice. Its annual tiers are the catch — Apple lists four live ones between A$89.99 and A$249.99, which sit both sides of our web figure, so check the price the app quotes you before committing to a year.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. The app's free tier gives basic voices and reading up to 1.5× speed — a fair trial. Speechify Studio also has a free tier with 600 credits but no cloning or commercial rights.

What's the difference between the Speechify app and Speechify Studio?

The consumer app is for listening — it reads articles, PDFs and emails aloud. Studio is a separate, separately-billed producer's tool for making voiceovers, with cloning and commercial rights.

Should I use Speechify to produce voiceovers?

No — buy it to listen, not to produce. For narration, ElevenLabs (best quality and AU-accent control) or Murf are stronger buys; Speechify Studio comes second on quality and budgeting.
