Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).

Verdict (TL;DR): Reflect is the most polished note-taking app most Australians have never heard of — genuinely fast, end-to-end encrypted, and with AI baked into search, voice transcription and writing. But it sells one plan, in US dollars, with no AUD billing and no Australian data residency. Buy it if you're a solo writer or knowledge worker who values speed and privacy over collaboration. Skip it if you need a team workspace or AU-hosted data.

What Reflect is

Reflect is a single-user notes app built around backlinks — the idea that notes connect to each other the way your brain does. Think of it as a faster, prettier, more private cousin of Obsidian or Roam Research.

The hook for 2026 is the AI layer. Reflect wires OpenAI and (per its own privacy policy) Anthropic models into the app so you can chat with your notes, transcribe voice memos, clean up grammar, and pull action items out of a meeting dump. It also leans hard on privacy: every note is end-to-end encrypted on your device before it ever reaches Reflect's servers.

It runs on Mac, Windows, web, iOS and Android, syncs instantly, and works offline. There is no free tier — just a 14-day trial and then a paywall.

What it costs in Australia

Reflect sells one plan, billed annually. There is no free version, no cheaper tier, and no true month-to-month option — you pay for a year up front.

Plan Price (USD) Approx AUD (ex-GST) Billing
Reflect US$10/mo billed annually (US$120/yr) ~A$14/mo · ~A$168/yr USD only, annual upfront

AUD basis: Conversions use the AI Directory standard rate (US$1 ≈ A$1.40) shown ex-GST: US$10 × 1.40 = A$14/mo; US$120 × 1.40 = A$168/yr. These are estimates for comparison only — Reflect bills in US dollars, so your actual charge moves with the exchange rate and your card's international fee.

Source: Pricing is taken from Reflect's homepage (reflect.app), which lists US$10/mo billed annually (US$120 per year, paid in one upfront charge) and a 14-day trial. Reflect does not offer a separate, higher month-to-month rate — the only paid option is the annual plan.

Reflect publishes no AUD price and does not document how GST is handled for Australian customers. As a US-billed digital service it may attract GST under Australia's imported-services rules, but because Reflect doesn't state this, treat the AUD figures above as a conversion estimates rather than a GST-inclusive quote.

How it works in practice

Open Reflect and you get a clean daily note and a search bar. Type, and [[double brackets]] link one note to another — those links build a backlink graph automatically, so a note about a client surfaces everywhere you've mentioned them.

The AI sits behind a keyboard shortcut. Highlight a messy paragraph and ask it to tighten the prose, or ask the assistant a question and it answers using your own notes as context. The standout is voice: record a thought or a meeting, and Reflect uses OpenAI's Whisper to transcribe it at close to human accuracy, then drops the text straight into a note. For anyone who thinks out loud on a commute, that alone can save 15–20 minutes of typing a day.

Speed is the thing you notice. Search is instant. Sync is instant. There's no spinner culture here — it feels like a native app, not a web wrapper.

What it does well

  • It's genuinely fast. Search, sync and navigation are near-instant. After a week you stop thinking about the tool and just write.
  • End-to-end encryption is real, not marketing. Notes are encrypted client-side with the XChaCha20-Poly1305 cipher before they leave your device, and a security firm (Doyensec) independently audited the cryptography and found no vulnerabilities. Reflect cannot read your notes.
  • Voice transcription is the killer feature. Whisper-powered transcription is accurate enough to dictate a full meeting recap and trust the output.
  • AI is woven in, not bolted on. Chatting with your own notes, extracting action items, and cleaning up grammar all live one shortcut away — no copy-pasting into a separate chatbot.
  • Backlinks done well. The networked-notes model rivals Obsidian and Roam without the setup overhead.

What it doesn't do well

  • No team or collaboration features. Reflect is single-user by design. There's no shared workspace, no multiplayer editing, no admin console. A two-person business can't run on it together.
  • USD-only, single plan. No AUD billing, no annual discount tiers, no student or business pricing. You pay US$10/mo or nothing, and the AUD cost drifts with the exchange rate.
  • Your AI prompts may become training data. Reflect's own privacy policy states that text sent to OpenAI or Anthropic for AI features "may be used as training data" by those providers. The note bodies stay encrypted at rest, but the AI features necessarily decrypt and transmit the text you act on. Privacy-maximalists should weigh that.
  • No Australian data residency. The privacy policy says data may be stored outside your country and names no AU region. Sensitive client material from regulated AU industries shouldn't live here.
  • No free tier to grow into. Obsidian and Notion both have capable free plans. Reflect asks for a card after 14 days, full stop.

Australian fit

This is where Reflect loses ground. There is no AUD billing — you're charged in US dollars, exposed to exchange-rate movement and possible card foreign-transaction fees. There is no documented Australian data residency: Reflect's privacy policy says your data is processed at the company's operating offices "and in any other places where the parties involved in the processing are located," and names no Sydney or Australian region. GST treatment for Australian customers is undocumented.

The AI features route your highlighted text and audio to OpenAI and Anthropic servers (US-based), and Reflect notes those providers may retain prompts. For an everyday writer that's a fair trade. For an accountant, lawyer or HR manager handling client data, it's a real consideration. Reflect is a personal-knowledge tool, not a compliance-grade business platform — and nothing about it is built for the Australian market specifically.

Alternatives

  • Notion — far stronger for teams and databases, with a usable free tier and Notion AI as an add-on. Heavier and slower than Reflect, and not end-to-end encrypted, but the better pick if you need collaboration.
  • Obsidian — free for personal use, local-first, and the closest match to Reflect's backlink model. You assemble AI via plugins rather than getting it built in. Best for tinkerers.
  • ChatGPT — if the AI is what you're really after and notes are secondary, a general assistant may cover more ground for similar money.

Bottom line

Reflect is the best single-user AI notebook I've tested this year, and the encryption is the real deal. If you're a solo founder, writer, consultant or knowledge worker who lives in your notes and wants speed plus privacy, the ~A$168/year is defensible — and the voice transcription alone may justify it.

But the cracks are Australian-shaped. No AUD billing, no local data residency, no team features, and AI prompts that may feed model training. If you need any of those, Reflect isn't your tool. For the right solo user it's a quiet ⭐⭐⭐ Good — excellent software held back, for Australians, by what it doesn't localise.

  • 30 Sep 2026 — re-verified by browser; the product this review describes has been repositioned, and no price is published. reflect.app/pricing now returns not-found, and the homepage presents Reflect Open: an open-source note app with local Markdown files, free on Mac, with a paid subscription only on iPhone and iPad, sync through iCloud Drive or Git, and AI that runs on your own API key (billed by your provider). The hosted product is reachable only as "Log in to Classic". No price in any currency appears on the site, so the US$10/month annual plan, the "no free tier" line and the built-in AI in this review could not be confirmed and may no longer apply to new customers. Filed for a full re-review in Review-Queue; the review is otherwise untouched. Nothing on the site is priced in A$. aud_native: false set. • 20 Jun 2026 — First reviewed.
  • 24 Sep 2026 — The AUD column was never grossed up for GST, and every word around it said it was. The header read “gross-up; GST unconfirmed” and the note beneath described a 10% uplift — while the figures themselves are plain conversions at 1.4045. Checked before changing a word: across the 63 files carrying this wording, 141 rows convert at 1.4045 and none at 1.4045 × 1.10. No figure changed here; only the description of them did. Two things were wrong beyond the arithmetic: gross-up names a tax uplift and was being used for a currency conversion, and GST unconfirmed is stale — our GST rule settled it on 5 September 2026, and a GST-registered Australian business supplying its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service. No USD price moved and no score changed. reviewed: untouched per our dating rule.

Frequently asked questions

Is Reflect available in Australia?

Yes. Reflect runs on Mac, Windows, web, iOS and Android, syncs instantly and works offline — all usable from Australia. But nothing about it is built for the Australian market specifically, with no local support and no AU data region.

Does Reflect charge in AUD?

No. Reflect sells one plan in US dollars — US$10/month billed annually (US$120/year), roughly A$168/year — so your charge moves with the exchange rate and any card foreign-transaction fee. GST treatment for Australian customers isn't documented.

Is there a free plan?

No. There's a 14-day trial, then a paywall — no free tier to grow into. By contrast, Obsidian and Notion both have capable free plans, so weigh those if you want to start without a card.

Is my data private and encrypted?

Mostly. Notes are end-to-end encrypted client-side (XChaCha20-Poly1305, independently audited by Doyensec) so Reflect can't read them at rest. But the AI features decrypt and send your highlighted text and audio to OpenAI and Anthropic, which may retain prompts as training data — and there's no Australian data residency.

Who is Reflect best for?

Solo writers, founders, consultants and knowledge workers who value speed and privacy over collaboration. Skip it if you need a team workspace, multiplayer editing, or AU-hosted data for regulated industries — it's single-user by design.
