Verdict in one line: The smartest second opinion in AI — locked behind a subscription that costs more per month than most Australian small businesses spend on software altogether.
⚠️ STALENESS FLAG — 5 September 2026. This first look was published 9 February 2026 and is 208 days old. It has not been re-verified against the vendor since. AI products move fast: pricing, model versions, plan names and Australian availability may all have changed. Read the verdict below as a snapshot of February 2026, not as a current recommendation. (House rule: any review over six months old carries this flag until it is updated.)
What launched
On 5 February 2026 Perplexity released Model Council: ask one question, and it runs through three frontier models in parallel — Claude Opus 4.6, GPT-5.2, and Gemini 3.0 at launch — then a synthesiser reconciles the three answers into one. Where the models agree, you get confidence. Where they disagree, you get told that too — which is often the more valuable signal.
The same week, Perplexity upgraded Deep Research to run on Claude Opus 4.5 for Pro and Max users — the first Opus-class model inside its research tool.
What it does
Every AI assistant has blind spots, and the honest answer to "which model is best?" has been "it depends on the question" for a year. Model Council is that answer turned into a product. For decisions where being wrong is expensive — a contract read, a market-entry question, a hiring call — the disagreement between three frontier models is exactly what you want surfaced before you commit.
Pricing for Australians
Model Council is exclusive to Perplexity Max at US$200/month — roughly A$280 at 1.40, billed in USD from overseas; check your invoice for GST treatment. There is no AUD pricing and no cheaper way in.
Australian Fit
It works from Australia without restriction and handles Australian questions competently — but everything runs offshore: USD billing, US processing, no Australian data residency, no local support. Don't feed it customer data without thinking about the Privacy Act first. 3/5.
Early read
Good: the reconciled-answer format genuinely beats asking one model; disagreement surfacing is a feature nobody else ships; setup is zero — it's just a toggle. Not so good: three models per query is slow and you feel it; A$280 a month buys a lot of single-model subscriptions; and the synthesiser is itself a model you're trusting to referee.
Early verdict
If you're already on Max for other reasons, turn it on today — it's the best thing on the tier. Nobody should buy Max just for this. For most Australians, asking Claude and ChatGPT the same question manually gets you 80% of the value for a tenth of the price.

Update history
- 20 Sep 2026 — Staleness check: vendor pricing page not reachable to the agent; no price claims re-verified this pass. Perplexity's pricing page and help centre sat behind a Cloudflare interstitial, so Max at US$200/month stands unchecked. The launch post itself did load. It confirms the 5 February 2026 launch, the three-model council (Claude Opus 4.6, GPT 5.2, Gemini 3.0) and the synthesiser that reconciles the answers. It also confirms Council shipped to Max subscribers on the web, with mobile support to follow. All of that is unchanged from our record. Because the price is the perishable claim and it could not be checked,
